Hello all
I require some input from some of the gurus of xda-devs and its a question im guessing a lot people would like to know the answer to
Can we swap spare parts from say a Cingular 8525 to a MDA Vario II? (Herm200 --> Herm300)
what i mean to say is, lets say we could only find a front keypad for a cingular 8525, would it fit into the vario II?of course the orientation of keys would be correct for the cingular and not for the vario so you'd need a new front keypad aswell, but on the 'technical' level, is this possible?
many thanks
Don't quote me on this BUT I believe I read a post from Mike Channon saying that internally ALL the Hermes variants were the same. Be best to search through his threads, website or ask the maestro himself...
Cheers...
Yes that's probably about 99% true, BUT I notice the d/pad layout on some variants is quite different and so the underlying board may well be different - have not had time to fully check this.
Mike
Thanks for clearing that up Mike, as I said I wasn't totally sure...
Cheers...
many thanks
so mike, my theoretical scenario, would it work?
if i was to get a cingular 8525 d-pad board and a 8525 keypad to go over it, technically it ought to work right?

I tried to check that out and did not find much info. BUT I see no reason for it not to work circuit wise. You might need to remap keys.
Have you checked that the 8525 keypad will fit the housing you have?
Mike
id happily modify the housing as a temporary thing, but i reckon i'll give it a shot and report back. i have a hunch it will fix the white screen issue.
does anyone know of anyone who has a brick they'd like to sell?!
Ebay is good, bought a couple of dud jasjams off there to fix mine and wouldn't you know it, one actually worked except for the camera & battery. Ended up cannobilizing MY Jasjam to fix up the "broken" one I purchased for parts....
Cheers...

My T-Mobile MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) is less than 1 month old and the camera plonks a line halfway across the image (see attached). I am certain that when I first used the device this didn't happen but I can't be sure.
I've searched the forums both here www.modaco.com and www.4winmobile.com and I can't find any clue to what this is. I've also tried using CoolCamera and that gives the same results. I'm starting to suspect that this is a duff unit but before I start the returns process (something I am not keen on doing have just got the device to my liking) I thought I would check if anyone else has had this issue.
FYI the SN of the device starts HT648F and other than the stylus being a bit stiff there is no other problems.
This may sound like an obvious suggestion, but have you checked that the lense doesn't have a hairline crack in it as this could cause this kind of problem. I am sure this is probably the first thing you checked but thought it was worth mentioning. Does the line appear on the screen when previewing before capturing an image?
An interesting suggestion, It does appear on the preview but I can't see anything obvious and it happens on both the normal and close up views. As the close up rotates the lens, the line is perfectly striaight and in exactly the same place on all views leads me to suspect that there is a duff connection at the pixels row within the camera itself.
Oh well I think it's time to visit the T-Mobile store I got it from and have a friendly chat - good job I have time this weekend to rebuild.
Phone now returned to t-mobile on their 28day faulty phone guarantee. Was an incredably painless exercise and the camera now works fine. Since they swapped box for box and asked if I wanted to use the charged battery which I did. I got home to find they forgot to take the new one out of the new box so I now have 2 !! I even got a much newer serial number HT704F.
Provided this new one keeps going I am a happy boy !!
Glad it worked out okay .. I too had to exchange my first Vario 2 with Tmobile because I had the screen alignment problem and they were really helpful ... straight swap the day after I reported the problem. I was pleasantly surprised at the service I received
another solution?
I have this problem now also and I don't want to send my device to T-Mobile for repairing because I bought it from an agency and it takes them round 3 months for repairing. is there any other way to fix this problem?
I tried another build of the camera software but it didn't help.
here is a sample picture with the line
This may be caused by a poor connection. The camera has a push on connector that can work loose. See here:

Of course re-seating that connector would void any warranty you may have!

thank you lots MikeShannon, you've been a lot of help to everybody here... I have now another reason to screw off my device (stylus and camera)
thank you!
Just a simple question:
Are both phones the same? Do they use the same stylus pen? Do they use the exact same motherboard, screen, connectors and etc? The only difference is the case and keyboard shape?
Thanks in advance!
Both devices are HTC WIZARD 200. They have a different housing face plate and keypad. Therefore also the shape of the stylus might vary - I am not sure! I am using the MDA version which looks better on the front in my opinion. Allthrough I think the keyboard looks better on the 8125 ...
Anything else is the same in the devices.
A friend of mine is sending me a dead MDA and I'd like to know if I buy a Cingular 8125 with a broken screen, will I be able to use the motherboard from the MDA or the screen from the 8125 to get a fully functional unit?

I wouldn't buy a 8125 with a broken screen in first place! Research this forum for the SERVICE MANUAL of the HTC WIZARD! After seeing how to take it appart you might be able to imagine that too much can go wrong! The screen and the keyboard are the last things you can access! You open the device on the back and have to work all way down piece by piece until there ...
I saw broken screen WIZARDs on eBay for $150.00 - compared to that you can find working dev ices for $200.00 w/o contract.
Yeah I saw the service manual and got scared too, but I can give it a try I think, if I find a broken device for less than $150
My PPC is T-Mobile MDA Vario II, yesterday I pull the keyborad but found some keys are not available, which are "U""J""N"".""P","UP""DOWN", the background light is ok for these keys, but no response for them when I key in, btw, other keys are ok.
Anyone in this forum ever met this problem? what is the most potential cause of this case? thanks for your commetns.
Sounds like one of two possibilities. Different I believe from the often reported "unresponsive keys". That's where you have tp push a bit harder for certain letters. So for you I think it's either:
1
The keyboard multiconnector is loose/poor contact,
2

Solutions:
Hopefully a warranty repair/replcement
If not then local repair or some diy.

Mike, thanks for your quick comments. I decide to disassemble my ppc to double check if conductive membrane is set up properly, but I feel curious why other keys could work under the same membrane, hopefully i could find the key after disassembly.
Mod Edit: We now know it's not the membrane:

Aaaaghh. I am on a trip overseas and the backlight of the LCD screen on my Dopod 838 Pro just went out. Under a bright light I can make out the screen changing as things happen, but it kind of makes it hard to read (impossible!!). Luckily TomTom kept talking to me, although not as good without the picture of the map to follow!!
Anyone heard of this before? Have read of a few "white screens", but this seems different to other posts.
Would appreciate any tips on fixing or replacing the screen. I plan to try to pull the machine apart and make sure a connector hasn't come loose when I get home, but am hoping I am not up for a new machine just yet.
Although this may be an excuse to upgrade to the Touch HD when it available in Australia!!
Thanks in advance.
3 things
try 1st
make sure your brightness is turned up, settings/system/backlight
try 2nd
backup device, hard reset, see if this works. ( the backlight should not be a software issue, but it is possible)
try 3rd (although I would try this 2nd if you can, because if this works will not lose your personal data like you will in step 2)
take apart and check the flex, (common cause of this problem)
Thanks, time to find my torx screwdrivers!!
Have been playing with as many settings as I could see with a bright torch, and then tried a hard reset (fortunately it was still able to connect to my PC for backing up data).
Even loaded a new ROM OS.
It happened to my Jasjam and I found the scroll wheel circuit board was the culprit (don't ask me how). I managed to get a "broken" Jasjam off ebay for a fair price and cannabalized it for the part I needed. Fixed it nicely.
I don't know if your is the same thing but if you can get a hold of a "broken" Hermes it might be worth a shot. Found the "broken" Jasjam had nothing wrong with it either. Good buy for $120AUD...
Cheers...
