Hey all,
I'm new to WM5 (or WM for that matters) and picked up my MDA from Tmobile a few days ago. I noticed windows becomes very sluggish at times (takes a long time for a key response). It's so slow sometimes it looks like it has hung in between program changes
I'm just running the basic programs that came with the phone and not using SD card at all.
Is this because I'm running low on Program memory? I noticed my program is at around 5 MB when this happens.
Should this even be happening w/ the basic apps? It seems to help when I start stop some of the running programs.
I hope I don't have OC the damn thing to run basic apps.
ROM version: 1.8.10.2 WWE (any better out there?)
ROM date: 12/10/05
I have an 8125 and it can get slow when running a few large programs of things. Like PIE or Opera & Media Player or Core. I will also tell you that its not an extremely fast device but it is in part due to the fact that programs are not writen to utilize the processor the Wizard has. That's what I have come to understand atleast. If anyone else has input on it please share.

I was hoping Opera would be less "fat" but from you have indicated that might not be the case. I wonder if Verizon's XV6700 make a difference in speed since their version is 400mhz.
I figure they're pretty much the same device and decided to go w/ TMobile since it's GSM.
Back to the slow issue, I notice the apps don't really close even if you close them. I have go to System to manually stop them to get the RAM back. Is that normal?
It is also slow because of memory design. There are more topics on this. You can't lose data when battery is empty, but type of memory used is slower.
Well thats a trade I am willing to make. I was always checking my battery on my SX66. Now atleast I can relax and jsut use the device. The 6700 from verizon should run these apps faster because it has a normal but higher speed procesor. It is 400 mhz but not dual core. Where as the Wizard is 200 (195) mhz Dual Core. I think that if apps were writen to utilize this they would run much better, as fast as the 400mhz.

Do you have Skype installed?
My xda mini S became extremely slow a month ago or so. It was pretty much unusable. Once I uninstalled Skype there was a massive speed increase.

That doesn't make sense, unless you were constantly running skype. Just having skype installed doesn't slow down the device. I have it installed, and there are no resources being used if I don't launch it.
Optical,
Have you applied the various reg hacks (WM5 Cache, and Glyphecache) yet? They do make a difference.
Skype has a minimum processor speed requirement, quite clearly stated on their website, which the XDA Mini unfortunately does not meet. Again, unfortunately that is the only version you can use for it since earlier Skype builds will not run at all under WM5. One trick is to run Skype from the MiniSD card which has the advantage of freeing up precious RAM, in fact I would recommend you only install any new applications onto the MiniSD card.
Skype
In my case I found a noticeable improvement once I uninstalled Skype. It wasn't running constantly. I regularly checked the Task Manager closing all unnecessary apps as it was so slow.
Might just be me though!

When you close programs in Windows Mobile they are not realy stopped!!
Thats why your memory is around 5 mb after a while.
If you want to stop programs at once, you need some special programs like SPB Pocket Plus.
May be this will help your memory loss and slow ppc.

Very true.
Another good one that I like using is Battery Pack Pro. The nice little "X" is in the corner of the screen and it lets you "click" the program close like windows normally would. It also lets you click on the "X" to see any running apps and force close them.
I'm just waiting for my miniSD card before I go with the tweaks. I'm just a little surprised at what I have to do to just run the apps the OS came with. I guess I had a higher expectation for this device as for performance. You would think 64MB on a phone device is enough!
I noticed one of the tweaks is references the GPS. What is that about? Is that referring to GPS as in GPS receiver? =)
I got a BT receiver and planning to use it but I would love to be surprised about the GPS feature.

I have tried a few browsers pie, opera, minimo etc and I find ftx Pbrowser best - small size not like those massive installs, fast and proper tabs. the only thing it does not do is download files but don't do that much any how. give it a go interested in your feedback
p.s. it also does'nt have the annoying keyboard pop up problem that pie does!
Far better than the recently released webby mobile (could not remember its name earlier ) and does go full screen and landscape mode and clear type for those that use it. U can tell I like this program
May we have some screenshot ? Thanks

is this better then the Mini Mozilla browser? for some reason, it took FOREVER to load for me so i uninstalled it. it also took up a lot of space too.
Sorry hard to see how it took a lot of space its only 75kb in size. just place the file in program files on your storage card its a stand alone aplication it needs no install. mine loads in less than a second and favorites come up quicker than pie.
I think he meant the 10 MB mini Mozilla browser. I heard that this file (ftx Pbrowser) is only a shell around PIE. So the tabs etc are in the ftx Pbrowser file, but the engine is normal PIE.
Yep it is a shell for pie but I particularly like the tabs, makes it more like firefox. oh yes I see minmo took forever to load for me to - certainly not minimal!
Looks good, I'll try it!!
It workd really well, there is still need for improvment , but the tab browsing is well done and I would love to see it when its more devloped.

Has anyone tried PIEPlus lately? http://www.reensoft.com/PIEPlus/
This also has tabs, etc. I used it some eons ago but not recently. Doesn't say if it's WM5 capable.
I know ranchosteve there is room for improvement will try and contact developer see if he will reconsider finishing product off

Let us know if he replies, this is very promising browser! Needs finishing off but still useful.
I have a bed feeling the programmer has completely gone, the last version was over 2 years ago.

the latest version of pieplus v2 supports wm5 and works well on the wizard theres a 14day trial as well
anyone else tried this
r
Yes I have tried PiePlus on my Jasjar. It certainly is WM5 compatible and they say so on their website.
However apart from adding tabs I don't see much in way of enhancing the capabilities of the PIE. My personal opinion is that it is not worth the money. But again this is just my personal opinion. Best is you try the 14 day trial period.

new pieplus is great, except something weird happened, my address bar went away and no way to get it back...so to go to a site, i have to add to favs, and im not in full screen mode either, anyone know a work around?
I like the program but when I went to fullscreen mode I can get it bacc to normal. Any Help?

i think its the same problem im having...
ive been using mini opera as well as the built in pie....I think opera handles some sites better than pie...and uses less bandwidth
In case anyone cares... you can get the latest flash plugin (7.0) for ppc at macromedias web site
Ftx is certainly showing its age (I used to use it on some of my older devices). I have been using NetFront 3.3 (Trial) and it's been pretty good - not as fast as Opera Beta 2 but certainly faster than PIE.
Hi all,
I am trying to use Skype on my S200 and it works ok when using it for text (what could go wrong there anyway )
However if I try to call then I get prob's.
Very slow, then I get sound problems (reception mainly).
Is this a problem anybody else is experiencing as well? Does anyone here have a solution? I remember reading about overclocking but I thought the OMAP processor that qtek s200 had is good enough to handle Skype?!
For info I downloaded the mobile version for 9090 as only 2 were available. The other one was for qtek 9000 (which I have not tried out yet).
"The minimum requirements to run Skype for Pocket PC 2.0 are:
· OS: Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC or Pocket PC 2003
· Display: 320x240, 640x480 (portrait or landscape), 240x240, 480x480
· CPU: 312Mhz + (Optimized sound quality versions for Intel Xscale, 312Mhz and for 400MHz+), b
· Network: WiFi, 3G or EDGE "
Any ideas/suggestions?
P.S. I would like to avoid the overclocking solution if possible.
Thanks!
Hi Makis,
I am afraid you have to go through overclocking to get acceptable performances with Skype. I am currently using the latest version for Mobile (2.0) downloadable from the skype site.
Search the forum for OmapClock and Skype... you'll find all directions to run it.
...until a new version, optimized for Omap/dual core comes out... if ever...
Bye.

Hi
Which one ? The one for slowest processor or the "normal" one ?
Thx for your answer.
slvrbllt,
Thanks for the reply.
I guess no other way around it. Overclocking it is then. One of these days I will give it a try, I remember seeing something about over clocking in here.
PS
Did you download the one for 9090 or 9000?
Thanks again.
See last post in this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=40583&highlight=skype+arm
and you should be able to try out the older, but specialized Skype for ARM devices, unlike the Xcale version that everyone here is using which is causing problems on Prophet. Download the GENERIC ARM version and give it a try.
Please post your results after trying it out.
krale thanks!
very helpful indeed.
For those who will read this in the future I think it is better if you follow the link that krale provided were you can find more specific and detailed info on this subject.

Look for A2DP tread on this forum... Sorry, I can't point you directly.
skype version
You can use the older Skype ARM version, however you won't have access to the contacts you may have added on your desktop version, since it is the newer v.2 which supports the server contact list.
However I'm using the new version of Skype without problems, overclocked to 240 of course.
Get the 312Mhz version from here:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/download.html
I haven't tried the high speed one, it may work if you feel like experimenting.
All,
Thank you for your replies and suggestions, everything was very helpfull.
I decided to give overclocking a try.
I tried the opmapclock that you can find in the forums (search for overclocking) There is also a step by step guide on how to keep your gadget overclocked the whole time, because once the phone goes to sleep you have to overclock it again.
I tried my S200 running on 228Mhz and 240Mhz (skype worked fine) and so did all the other applications. I found the 228 enough to see a small improvement.. DO NOT expect miracles and please be careful since there can be some issues if youi over do it. I suggest you do some research in here before you decide to overclock.
I used the latest skype version (I think it is the 2.0 version).
Anyway I hope someone else can also find this info usefull in the future.
Once again thanks for all the help..
Makis
You also have the option of using other VOIP solutions. Do a search for SJphone and sipdiscount and you'll find more info. I can use SJphone without overclocking, but I need to overclock to 240 for the new version of skype.
Thanks Matterhorn I will have a look.
I'd like to get Skype working on the Wizard. I've tried searching but there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive guide.
I also just tried downloading from Skype.com for the pocketpc 312mhz version and it downloads and installs ok, however at the EULA stage the text doesn't all fit on screen so I am unable to accept the EULA and test it.
Can anyone give any hints and tips? Perhaps the I-Mate cab is available as apparently that may be optimised for the Wizard.
I have a Wizard with the new T Mobile UK firmware.
Many thanks for your help.
...did you install low cpu version (cab version or pc-windows executable). I installed it from...
http://www.freecabs.de/
program1 (new), you've got to search a little (great place, though, for other freeware).
...and i didn't had any EULA issues.
many thanks i'll give that a try
I've installed the low-cpu version and even with the wizard overclocked around 240 I find the voice quality not adequate enough.
...with overclocking you're able to use high cpu and therefor better quality. Also there are some threads around to improve mic & phone sounds...
I tried the low cpu beta install linked from the freecabs site, same issue, I get the eula and just see a t at the end and no yes / no / i agree to progress past this.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I'm assuming all of these require the use of skype, what other software is out there that lets you use VoiP on these phones? (We use VoiP at the office, but not Skype)
...i don't know any other VoIP software because at this moment there are 3 million skype users online, and i wanna stay in contact with them, so i didn't looked for any other. Or can other VoIP-servers connect with skype servers?...
i down loaded the low cpu cab and it sound real bad even with my qtek 9100 over clocked at 252 and using wifi
I installed Skype 2.2 BETA for Windows Mobile the other day and don't seem to be able to get a connection with reasonable voice quality. It's clearly not related to insufficient speed of the data connection cos when I'm running Skype on my laptop (through the internet sharing functionality of the Trinity), I get a good-quality Skype connection.
I'm guessing that the Trinity processor is pushed to its limit during an active Skype session: the device is pretty much not responding to stylus taps / hardware buttons - at least not for quite a while...
Is anyone experiencing similar problems Any help appreciated!
Are you sure you have downloaded the correct file for Skype, cause for me it works very good with no sound issues and very very fast response....Maybe you are running other energy consuming programms that leave you with little memory for Skype.
The file should be the correct one. When no applications are running, I've got a bit more than 20Mb free program memory. I've uninstalled Skype for now so I can't check how much of that is left after launching Skype. The file storage was pretty low (~2.5Mb) though as I don't have a miniSD card yet. But I guess that shouldn't really be a problem...
Hi,
i run skype and it´s cool
few points to take care of:
close all other apps wen running skype, active sync running in the background i the death of performance ;-)
goto settings, memory, close running apps. (i´ve set trinity to shut down the apps with the "X" butten, so i can minimize it with the "close" butten)
next: how many contacts do U have in skype? they recomend to have less than 100 for good performance.
lack of mem is an general performance issue, read the thread "Memory Problems) in this forum,... SKtools made a mirical on my trinity
cheers

Hi Andi
I'm having real problems getting skype to run on my trinity(Orange SPVM700). I can only get it to run as a 'messenger' program, any time I try to make or receive a voice call it crashes. I'm seeing alot of talk about skype being blocked on the SPV and i'm beginning to wonder whether i'm going to need to make an upgrade to get it to work. Would you mind giving me details of the rom version you are running on your trinity. tia. If anyone else knows better I would be grateful for any advice. thanks
The last version of skype (2.2?) is not full compatible with trinity....
you can chat but you can't call with voice.
You will need the old beta skype version...

thanks for this
it works nice
just try fring
Gtalk, Skype, MSN , SIP all in one app
thanks jacare, i was having the same problem with skype crashing when trying to make calls but i'll give this beta a go.

Oh,man!!!
This is just what I need, because I use Skype and voipcheap all the time and now I got all under the same app.I usually use Skype and SJphone, but since I got this one much better,I like it.
Thanks so much.
Thanks - Skype beta is working great on the Dopod.
One more thing, how do I do the following (if possible):
1. Have Skype calls go through the speaker phone
2. Records Skype calls (on PC, I use Pamela)
Skype 2.1
Here you are another version.Skype 2.1
Are you guys running Skype and wifi? The reason why I ask you this,is because some routers,AP´s and Wifi routers when it comes to p2p they get kind of stuck. Some P2P apps open multiple connections and don´t close them properly,so it also depends on the memory of the router ,it´s not just the P3600.
Sorry guys I´ve trying to upload it 8 times but it keeps popping up this message over and over:Upload of file failed.
Thanks a lot guys...
I had the same problem (could not find the old version)
Works perfect now... as one year ago

jacare,
Thanks for this.
Man, am I relieved !!! One of the main reasons why I decided to get a Pocket PC was to be able to use the Skype and SkypeOut while mobile (HSDPA and Hotspots or even my home WiFi)
I have a new P3600i arriving around 27 Sept and to be proactive went and downloaded the latest Skype mobile, and while doing so saw the notice that it was incompatible with the P3600 , which means it'll be incompatible with the P3600i.

I've downloaded this earlier version and will use it when the new device arrives.
