Hi all,
Just got my first WM phone a Dopod 838Pro and looking forward to doing lots with it. But I just put my Virgin Mobile SIM in (Virgin Australia) and the phone says it's connected but says the carrier is Optus ???
I tried doing a manual search for Virgin and it only finds Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. Firstly yes I'm in Virgin coverage as I'm at home and always have a full signal. So my question is do any of the Australian folks on here know how to get this phone to work on Virgin's network please?

Have had my wizard for a couple of weeks now, when I bought it, it had the O2 software running on it, its branded externally as an O2. I upgraded the ROM last night but i have noticed that the phone (as before) still thinks it is using the T-mobile network e.g. when i tap on the signal strength indicator or a message comes through, it indicates the t-mobile network. I can receive and make calls as well as text messages and voicemail on the virgin network no problem. After doing the rom update last night i indicated that i was on the Virgin network when prompted when the device was initialising.
So how do i get rid of the fact that my wizard thinks its using the t-mobile network when its actually using the Virgin network. The phone is branded externally as O2? How on earth did this t-mobile identity survive the ROM update. Note i applied the I-mate ROM.
During the ROM update i left the sd card containing the previous ROM image (O2), a backup in case things went wrong, in the device. I noticed that a little after i ran the imate rom update from my host pc a message appeared on my imate mentioning something about the fact that there was an SD card containing a rom image and if i wanted to use this. It was very late and by the time it registed with me what i was looking at the message timed out and the rom update continued. Could this explain the reocurrence of the t-mobile wording. When i reset the device the imate splash is what i see.
Currently:
ROM version 2.16.9.1 WWE
ROM date 2/6/06 (6/2/06 here in the UK)
Radio version 02.07.10
Protocol version 413.1.03
ExtROM version 2.16.9.101
Thanks for any help
Fergus
Virgin is a virtual mobile operator and uses T-mobile's network. Its common for T-Mobile to show up as the carrier on many mobile phones.
Roaming indication after upgrade
Hi have the same problem.
I have a T-mobile (US) phone; I upgraded the ROM (Qtek test ROM) and since then, the phone shows that I am roaming into Cingular network.
In my area (San Francisco) - Cingular is the actual network operator; T-mobile uses Cingular's infrastructure as part of a deal made long time ago.
So, the ROM is correct but I wish there was a way to disable the ugly triangle (showing that I'm roaming) or alternatively - let the phone know that I'm parked in a "home-network".
Ah thank you for clearing that up. By the way is it true that virgin has been bought by NTL, someone mentioned this today. Not sure who is worse NTL or Virgin UK.
Do you know where i can get the settings for MMS and GPRS, have not checked if they have been set up properly.
Many Thanks
Fergus

it's true...
The operator logo in the dialer does not automatically change when you switch networks / sim cards.
It depends on the image file 'carrierlogo.gif' in the Windows folder.
I have an unlocked T-Mobile MDA Vario with an Orange sim card - this showed as T-Mobile until I updated the carrierlogo.gif file!
If you want to view the network you are currently connected to, go to Start | Settings | Phone | Network.

Have you tried another QTek ROM? Otherwise, it's a possible SIM-related issue. The SIM hasn't received an OTA (Over the Air) update telling it that it is connected to T-Mobile's local switch. Furthermore, you shouldn't be on the shared network anymore since the old GSM 1900 shared network was sold to T-Mobile in CA and NV as part of the Cingular/AT&T merger. I would think that T-Mobile has updated that GSM 1900-only network to broadcast only their MNC (Network Code) so any T-Mobile SIMs registered on the network know that it is a native network.
I bought my Dodpod about 6 weeks ago in Singapore, put in my Optus 3G Sim and it all worked a treat. Today I tried to change carriers to the new Telstra NEXTG 3 G network and the phone does not recognise the SIM. I have tried the Telstra SIM in my Nokia E61 and it works fine, but the Dodpod will not recognise the sim. And telstr are selling the JasJam as their preferred phone. All Telstra help desk would say is that the Dopod is not guaranteed on their network and to go talk to Dopod. Very helpful. But clearly the issue is with my Dopod as the Nokia works OK. Any clues anybody on what I can do other than going back to Optus?

I would say flash it to another ROM like the Telstra ROM found here:

If your phone is not unlocked yet you can get it unlocked here:

Hope that helps
Hi all,
I hope this argument has not been already discussed. Because all the keyword related to this specific problem are very general, I'm having an hard time searching for related posts...
I have a Qtek 9100 (not branded and never locked to any company) that I used successfully with all the Italian mobile companies. I moved to Florida couple of month ago, and my Vodafone SIM has been working fine in roaming.
Because roaming is not cheap at all , I just bought a t-mobile SIM card. But when I insert it the phone says "Waiting for connection" forever. If I try to select the network manually, the only available one is "cingular".
I also bought an At&T SIM, that according to AT&T and T-Mobile customer services, should have exactly the same technology for GSM connection, and so my phone should work either on both or none...). Strange enough, it works perfectly with the At&T.
However, I would like to use T-Mobile, as it is much cheaper for the type of service I need.
Can anyone help me? Do you think it can be related to the GSM firmware?
Thanks
Giacomo
Did you try flashing a stock t-mobile ROM to it?
I'm a new Australian user to XDA. I recently bought outright a HTC HD2 phone from a Telstra provider promising it will work on Optus 3G network. Suprise!!! it doesn't work.
Can anyone show me how to unlock the Telstra use please?

The HD2 from Telstra is unlocked. Mine works with Optus 3G no problems.
What problem are you running into specifically? Does it say "Optus" on your home screen. Can you make phone calls?
I'm running the Telstra HD2 on Optus, although what they [Telstra] did in their ROM was to disable the auto config, the HD2 automatically detects your network from the information from the sim data. It can be done manually, although I couldn't start to tell you how to do that. I flashed a custom ROM to the handset so I wouldn't have to deal with that. So info on manual network config is what you ore looking for!
have a look at these
Hi, also got the HD2 from JB Hifi and used the following to get it onto Optus and to get rid of some of the Telstra bloat.
Installed the 3rd cab from this link and soft reset with the Optus Sim and it will detect the right settings and add all the Optus Internet and Zoo stuff.

Also this post has lots of good tips about the Telstra phone.

Hi again,
Now I've managed to unlock my Orange branded OSF and flash the SwedishSpring rom, I've been trying out different UK SIM cards.
Orange and T-Mobile work fine. Problem comes with 2 of the SIM cards I've tried from smaller networks:
TalkMobile - use Vodafone network
Tesco Mobile - use O2 network
For first 5 minutes there is a weak signal and then signal is lost completely only to come back weakly very intermittently.
Going into settings>network providers and trying to connect automatically to a network generates a message saying something like 'the network cannot register this SIM'. There is a list of the big networks (O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and 3) and trying to connect to the 'parent' network fails.
The only thing in common with Talk Mobile and Tesco Mobile is that they 'piggyback' onto another network. There is no problem with the Orange and T-Mobile SIMs as I presume being in the list of providers means those SIMs connect without difficulty. The Talk Mobile and Tesco Mobile SIMs presumably try to connect to thier respective 'parent' network and fail once network recognises it isn't an O2 or Vodafone SIM?
The Talk Mobile and Tesco Mobile SIMs work fine in other phones, so not quite sure what's going on. Technical support at Tesco were useless saying, you have unlocked your phone in a non-legitimate way, therefore you can't expect our SIM to work properly (despite the T-Mobile and Orange ones working OK!)
I'm sure one of the tech/gurus/wizards here can provide more useful suggestions and help compared to the Tesco technical support department
Look forward to hearing your thoughts and if anyone else has experienced similar problems and how they solved them.
Thanks
PS. same problem exists even with the original stock Orange ROM prior to flashing FroYo rom.
From what you've mentioned, it sounds like your blade may not be unlocked.
I say this because since Orange & T-mobile merged as Everything Everywhere, their sims can be used to switch on to each others networks on locked devices.
Which method did you use to unlock your blade if I may ask?
