Dodpd 838 Pro and Telstra NextG - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I bought my Dodpod about 6 weeks ago in Singapore, put in my Optus 3G Sim and it all worked a treat. Today I tried to change carriers to the new Telstra NEXTG 3 G network and the phone does not recognise the SIM. I have tried the Telstra SIM in my Nokia E61 and it works fine, but the Dodpod will not recognise the sim. And telstr are selling the JasJam as their preferred phone. All Telstra help desk would say is that the Dopod is not guaranteed on their network and to go talk to Dopod. Very helpful. But clearly the issue is with my Dopod as the Nokia works OK. Any clues anybody on what I can do other than going back to Optus?

I would say flash it to another ROM like the Telstra ROM found here:

If your phone is not unlocked yet you can get it unlocked here:

Hope that helps

Attention USA users of O2 XDA Exec / T-mobile

I have a UK purchased O2 XDA exec, but now live in the USA. The O2 XDA exec is supposedly unlocked for any sim cards (I have been using a Virgin sim in the UK fine) .
I purchased a PAYG USA T-mobile sim that won't work, anyone got it working, or if I need a different kind of sim?
As soon as you put in the sim, it comes up with incorrect sim message.....
Is it possible that O2 could have it unlocked to European or UK but Locked to USA sim? Strangely there does not seem to be any way of putting in an unlock code in any case.... it just gives the incorrect sim message..............
Hopefully it will work with another sim???!!!
Any help greatlt appreciated!
I have a qtek 9000, which was never locked. I live in Poland, and tried 3 sim cards from plus gsm. They all gave the same message you are getting. The only card that worked successfully was the plus gsm 3g sim card. Also, cards from another company worked. There seems to be some difference in 'new' and 'old' sim cards, and the universal is very tempermental if you don't have the right one.

I have an O2 XDA EXEC from the UK which I purchase from a friend and have him sent to me here in the US. I am using Cingular without any problems.
Remeber guys, Not all operators in the US use the same frequencies/sim types as their European Counterparts.
If the sim is trying to operate on a frequecny that the universal is not able to use, then it might cause this problem.
superseagulls:
As far as I know - a device which is SIM UNlocked cannot be locked to specific SIMs.
It is far more likely that the cellular operator that you have purchased your new SIM in the USA from is using different frequencies than are supported by or in some cases selected within your device;
OR (possibly) the operator puts some usage limitations/locks within the SIM - ask your new operator about using GSM devices which are not purchased from them and which frequencies are used.
I suggest you initially ask them anonymously in case they DO have problems with devices other than their own
jasjar on T-mobile
I am using a jasjar on T-Mobile in the USA. I got 3 phones on a family plan, took the SIM out of one to put in jasjar, and it has worked with no problems. I told the sales lady I would be putting the SIM into a 3rd party device, and she didn't see any problem with that. It was a Motorola phone, but I don't have the model number offhand.
Cheers.

Your PAYG sim might be looking for special settings on the T-Mobile phone. When I workjed at T-Mobile UK we tied the Java extras on the SIM to the handset, so if you used a non t-mobile handset you didn't get the extra features.
You probably have an old 8k or 16k SIM,
Is it more than a year old,
The XDA Exec etc all require the latest 32k SIMs to work,
You should have no problem with T-Mobile USA just explain you need an updated SIM for a new phone
I have the same problem with Optus, Australia. Anyone know what frequency they run on?
Frequencies:
USA/Canada GSM 800, GSM 1900. UMTS 1900. UMTS 800
Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Oceania: GSM 900, GSM 1800, UMTS 2100
South America: A mix of the above
The only SIMs which look for specific firmware in the US are TracFone and Net10. The SIM probably needs to be replaced. This is aproblem in other newer phones too

Do I need a 3g usim card for 3g on a m3100?

Hi All
I have just ordered a orange spv m3100 to be used unlocked on t-mobile. I just phoned up t-mobile to ask if i need a new sim to use in a 3g phone, but the woman i spoke to seemed to think that there is no such thing as a 3g sim, is this correct?
Will my old sim from my wizzard work in the m3100 and will i get 3g?
Thanks
you can use a 2g sim in the m3100 but you wouldnt be able to get any 3g services out of it.
best thing to do is just pop your sim into it and it will tell you if you have a 3g signal.
hope this helps
thats what i thought, thanks. i will have to phone up t-mobile again and explain i want a 3g sim.
have you asked to receive the m3100 unlocked or are you having it unlocked after you get it?
as far as i'm aware the m3100 comes locked to orange as standard so you won't be able to use a t-mobile sim...
I've spoke to T-mobile previously about 3g services and they've told me that the chip that I got off them (Bought a MDA vario) would be able to use 3g.
I popped it into my Nokia N70 and it worked a treat.
So, you might not need a different type of Sim card
nice tread i was literally going to ask this exact sme question. i just posted in another thread, asking almost the same thing, only i'm getting a new contract on t-mob and extending my misses contracting then gonna pay for them to both be unlocked and then swap the sims,
hope they send me a 3G sim
Strangely enough, I've ordered a Orange SPV 3100 today and depending on if I like it I'm going to get it unlocked and use my t-mobile chip with it.
Don't fancy paying £20 to get it unlocked to test though, So if anyone can get me a free unlocking solution by tomorrow, that would be appreciated
Even T-Mobile pay as you go sim cards seem to be fine for 3g data - just not enabled for video calling.
My vodafone sim card is a standard one, I haven't changed it in 3 or 4 years and 3g works fine.
thanks for the replys guys, this is all sounding good
I have a mate who had a MDA Vario. He bought an unbranded TyTN and asked me what he had to do to get the internet working.
I said call T and ask for 1) 3g sim 2) connection settings.
He called T and they said he didn't need a 3g sim... I have to say I though they were talking bollocks. So he popped his old sim in and we had a video call - no problems at all.
So you may be ok...
It depends on when you got your device/SIM. If bought over the last year it should be OK, if the SP supports 3G anyway. Older SIMs may need to be replaced.
So...the networks have been shipping USims instead of Sims....interesting. I didn't know that.
Quite useful to know.
thats very interesting, although I have had my sim for some time so not sure if it is a usim. Mine came with my Magician just over a year and a half ago. When I got my wizzard, I just swpped the sim over.
My M3100 should be here today, so I will test it and see what happens.
I dont think there will be a free unlocking tool for a few weeks at least, so Im just going to pay the £20 and get the code.

My voda sim is a sim (not a usim) and is about 3 years old and has worked in every voda 3g phone I've tried it in (v980, 6680, sharp 902, sharp 903, v3x and xda exec).
Gives 1.2mb on hsdpa.
I just had to ask for it to be enabled when voda launched 3g.

Not tried it, but UK O2 Orbits are not network locked, you can put any SIM in - although with it not being a 3G device, there seems little point in putting a Three SIM in as it will just drop back to whichever GSM network Three piggybacks on (O2 I think). I'v just bought a three sim for £1.25 on ebay, so I'll load it up and see what the coverage is like near me - I only get intermittent t-mobile in my place...
it used to be possible but then 3 started to locking their sims so they only worked in 3g phones
aha!
im not so fussed about the 3g coverage its more being able to use that sim card in the phone, whethe rit roams off of o2 or etc. i got my phoen unlocked (originally t-mobile compact 3) and its the only simcard that doessnt work - thats why im suspicios of this shop[ who says they can doo it for £50
please keep me updated as to how your simcard goes, and if anyone knows a way of doing this im all ears!

Newbie carrier set-up problem

Hi all,
Just got my first WM phone a Dopod 838Pro and looking forward to doing lots with it. But I just put my Virgin Mobile SIM in (Virgin Australia) and the phone says it's connected but says the carrier is Optus ???
I tried doing a manual search for Virgin and it only finds Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. Firstly yes I'm in Virgin coverage as I'm at home and always have a full signal. So my question is do any of the Australian folks on here know how to get this phone to work on Virgin's network please?

Reception problems with AT&T

Hi,
I bought my HTC Touch Cruise in France. I've unlocked.
I am in USA since one month and my phone does not connect to the USA Network ... I bought a GoPhone with a sim. But when I place my sim in my touch cruise that it fails to connect to the network ... But I have unlocked my phone. Someone would be in the same situation as me?
Regards,
Scootcarrouf
i'm not sure how many versions of the TC there is but does it run on US (AT&T) frequencies? my TC, before i totally decimated it by trying to replace the screen, worked like a champ.
may be that the sim cards are associated with AT & T phone?
