Attention USA users of O2 XDA Exec / T-mobile - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General
I have a UK purchased O2 XDA exec, but now live in the USA. The O2 XDA exec is supposedly unlocked for any sim cards (I have been using a Virgin sim in the UK fine) .
I purchased a PAYG USA T-mobile sim that won't work, anyone got it working, or if I need a different kind of sim?
As soon as you put in the sim, it comes up with incorrect sim message.....
Is it possible that O2 could have it unlocked to European or UK but Locked to USA sim? Strangely there does not seem to be any way of putting in an unlock code in any case.... it just gives the incorrect sim message..............
Hopefully it will work with another sim???!!!
Any help greatlt appreciated!
I have a qtek 9000, which was never locked. I live in Poland, and tried 3 sim cards from plus gsm. They all gave the same message you are getting. The only card that worked successfully was the plus gsm 3g sim card. Also, cards from another company worked. There seems to be some difference in 'new' and 'old' sim cards, and the universal is very tempermental if you don't have the right one.

I have an O2 XDA EXEC from the UK which I purchase from a friend and have him sent to me here in the US. I am using Cingular without any problems.
Remeber guys, Not all operators in the US use the same frequencies/sim types as their European Counterparts.
If the sim is trying to operate on a frequecny that the universal is not able to use, then it might cause this problem.
superseagulls:
As far as I know - a device which is SIM UNlocked cannot be locked to specific SIMs.
It is far more likely that the cellular operator that you have purchased your new SIM in the USA from is using different frequencies than are supported by or in some cases selected within your device;
OR (possibly) the operator puts some usage limitations/locks within the SIM - ask your new operator about using GSM devices which are not purchased from them and which frequencies are used.
I suggest you initially ask them anonymously in case they DO have problems with devices other than their own
jasjar on T-mobile
I am using a jasjar on T-Mobile in the USA. I got 3 phones on a family plan, took the SIM out of one to put in jasjar, and it has worked with no problems. I told the sales lady I would be putting the SIM into a 3rd party device, and she didn't see any problem with that. It was a Motorola phone, but I don't have the model number offhand.
Cheers.

Your PAYG sim might be looking for special settings on the T-Mobile phone. When I workjed at T-Mobile UK we tied the Java extras on the SIM to the handset, so if you used a non t-mobile handset you didn't get the extra features.
You probably have an old 8k or 16k SIM,
Is it more than a year old,
The XDA Exec etc all require the latest 32k SIMs to work,
You should have no problem with T-Mobile USA just explain you need an updated SIM for a new phone
I have the same problem with Optus, Australia. Anyone know what frequency they run on?
Frequencies:
USA/Canada GSM 800, GSM 1900. UMTS 1900. UMTS 800
Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Oceania: GSM 900, GSM 1800, UMTS 2100
South America: A mix of the above
The only SIMs which look for specific firmware in the US are TracFone and Net10. The SIM probably needs to be replaced. This is aproblem in other newer phones too

Unlocked XDA with O2 SIM
:?: I have an unlocked XDA working with an Orange SIM, I have been given an O2 SIM by my company and want to use it with my XDA, but when I put the O2 SIM in my XDA it will not receive any signal. I tried a T-Mobile SIM and this seems to work ok, but the O2 SIM will not connect to the network. Is this to do with the fact that I have unlocked the XDA? When I unlocked the XDA I ude the XDAunlock utility and do not have a copy of the lock code. Does any body have ant ideas please? Frootmig...
Are You sure, that the O2 Sim is working? Have you tried it in an other phone? How old is this SIMcard? I know that there were som eproblems with a view SIMcards. It's no problem of the unlocking. HTH Stefan
Both T-Mobile and Orange in the UK use the 1800 band, the O2 sim uses the 900 band, I would be interested to know if a Vodafone sim will work, can you get hold of one and try it?
My guess is if you have brought the phone 2nd hand it is barred on O2, due to the fact that cross network barring did not start till about the middle of last year if the phone was reported lost/stolen etc etc before then it will still work on the other networks, also make sure you have the setting so it can pick up signal on the 900mhz (O2 Vodafone) or it will never work.
:? Hi, Cruisin thru, lonegunman and lumpistefan Thanks for your replys, the O2 SIM has been tried in an XDAII and works ok. The phone is not lost or stolen I have bought from the guy with the XDAII and I was with him when he bought the XDA I. As far as I know the GSM is set to 900/1800 (its a model 10A), does it need to be set to just 900 for it to work with O2? The SIM card is approx 1 year old and works ok in an XDA II. Unfortunately I do not know anybody with a Vodaphone SIM. I will try changing the band to 900 and see if this works, I assume this is done via the bootloader method (holding power button while pressing reset). Many thanks , any other ideas would be appreciated. Frootmig.
Have a seach round on here I think you will find that it is a sim card fault and you need a new one.
Solomon Island's Telekom compatibility.
Can anyone advise whether the O2 XDA 2 Mini triband GSM / GPRS system is compatible with Solomon Islands Telekom locallly provided telephone system. Previously I have used an old Telstra Nolkia phone (fairly basic model but cannot recall exactly which) with local prepaid sim card replacing Aust SIM. Will I have to continue this way or will I be able internationally roam with my same number??.
handbook?
Hi Folks Does anyone have a soft copy of the handbook for the Universal they could post or mail me? Love to have a read. Also, for the 3G calling, does it use a sim or usim? cheer Brett

If you don't have any, you cannot get onto the 3G network. I'm actually having this issue, as I travel to the UK a lot, where T-mobile has a live 3G network. As I do not have a USIM (since T-Mobile NL doesn't offer 3G yet), I cannot roam onto their 3G network, only onto GPRS... Bugger...
My operator (Telenor in Norway) enables the customers to use their OLD SIM cards and still have full 3G access! My SIM card is from 2004, but customers may use cards that go back to July 2000 on the 3G network.. There has been some Over The Air updates, but these might be for something else.. The user only gets a SMS saying: "You SIM card has been updated, please reboot your phone." So we can use the same SIM on a new and old phone, 3G or no 3G...

I got the impression that a "USIM" was just a normal 3v SIM card which has been enabled for use on the UMTS network. And that's done by pressing a button at T-Mobile 'Command Centre'... '3' here in the UK make a big deal about USIM cards, and how you have to have one to use a 3G phone, but that only seems to apply to their handsets, because they put about 800 billion security locks on each of them. In my experience, Vodafone and T-Mobile don't require you to upgrade the actual SIM card at all, and I assume that Orange and O2 are the same.

I might put in a phonecall to T-Mobile... Thanks for the heads-up!
I'd better just point out that my last post was entirely guesswork on my part, based on the fact that my old T-Mobile SIM, and my sister's (3-year?)old Vodafone SIM both work perfectly in 3G devices. In my case, I never even told T-Mobile that I'd bought a 3G phone, the SIM just worked on 3G from the second I put it in, so no OTA upgrade needed? (Of course, maybe they gave us UK customer's an upgrade one night without telling us?!) My sister got an official Vodafone upgrade to a 3G phone, so they may have done an OTA thingy at the time, but the actual physical card is the same...

Click to collapse Not tried it, but UK O2 Orbits are not network locked, you can put any SIM in - although with it not being a 3G device, there seems little point in putting a Three SIM in as it will just drop back to whichever GSM network Three piggybacks on (O2 I think). I'v just bought a three sim for £1.25 on ebay, so I'll load it up and see what the coverage is like near me - I only get intermittent t-mobile in my place...
it used to be possible but then 3 started to locking their sims so they only worked in 3g phones
aha! im not so fussed about the 3g coverage its more being able to use that sim card in the phone, whethe rit roams off of o2 or etc. i got my phoen unlocked (originally t-mobile compact 3) and its the only simcard that doessnt work - thats why im suspicios of this shop[ who says they can doo it for £50 please keep me updated as to how your simcard goes, and if anyone knows a way of doing this im all ears!
Unlocked but shows roaming service
my HTC P3600 was purchased in the UK and was locked on the Orange network. I got it unlocked before moving to Canada to study. I purchased a sim card from one of the GSM mobile operators (Fido). But when I insert the sim card into my phone it shows me as roaming and the network also charges me roaming service rates even though I am not in a roaming area. I upgraded the ROM from WM5 to WM6.1 and still the the problem is not fixed. I also used the sim and CID unlocker (http://pof.eslack.org/trinity-unlocker/) to "reunlock" it but that also didn't work. Can anyone help me out here. I love my phone and would like to use it instead of getting another one. So please whatever suggestions you have would be welcomed. thanks in advance
