newbie help needed please - Networking

hi guys im playing around with a tmobile(uk) mda vario 1 i bought today 2nd hand and am trying to set it up to acess the internet via wifi.ive just plugged in a wireless router(free from virgin) and is working fine with my daughters laptop and sony psp. but i dont know how to set up this phone ie what do i type in and where? also i dont know what the ip addy is where i am.
can anyone please help a newbie please.

Turn on the Wi-Fit, then it should automatically scan. After that, click your router, and enter your security key.
By the way, 3 tips for the future:
1) Don't call a thread "newbie help needed" or any sort of thing like that, it usually gets ignored, or flamed. A better title for this problem would be "how do I connect my Vario to my Wireless Network?"
2) search for the answer, has been asnwered many many times before, and I know that without searching myself.
3) post it in the relevant forum. Although "Networking" may seem relevant to you, there is a forum called Wizard general, which is for questions like this about the T-Mobile Vario.
And, just so you know, your device has the codename "Wizard" so the Wizard forums is where you should be READING right now.
Rory

hi thanks for the quick reply and i will take them points onboard next time i start a thread.
ive turned the router & modem on then turned my wifi on which then does pick up it.ive entered the sec key and stuff and all is fine but if i click on internet exp non of the web pages i type in load up?

There is allot of stuff floating around so I am hoping to consolidate it as much as possible.
If you are using an 8125 and have BB Connect working please resond with information on ROM versions and the steps you have taken to get BB Connect working.
If you have been unsuccessful with your 8125 and BB Connect Please respond likewise.

While there has been a lot of stuff, most of the real info has been in a single thread - I recommend taking the time to read it rather than having this thread turn into a duplicate - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32087&highlight=blackberry+8125
(found easily by doing a search of 8125 and blackberry in the Wizard grouping...)
Moral of the story - you'll find that there is a good combination of blackberry connect software and an 8125 ROM (although many people have found lackluster performance) - and, in any event, I haven't seen anything yet that says that people have been succesful with this combination on Cingular.
Enjoy.

Im a mac user. Please help XDA Exec

Hey folks,
just took delivery of a o2 Xda Exec,
I am a total beginner.
i have hundreds of questions.
can I use it with my mac?
How powerful a phone is it?
where do I start?
Any kind of guidance and direction will be greatfully appreciated!
Thanks
Liam
Well, you are here, that's a good starting point (by the way, welcome, even if I'm almost certainly not the right person to do this).
See the threads that reflect your interests better, search through the forum toughly (people is not always willing to answer too much "newbies" questions). After all, you have a mac, you shouldn't be so ... (just kidding).
I don't have a mac, so I'll not say anything about your first question, the second one, well, what are you talking about? The phone as a cellular phone or the PDA as a little computer?
As a phone, the universal is about a medium quality UMTS phone (my Ipaq 6340 was better than the universal, but just had GPRS); if you meant as a computer, well, it is certainly a very capable PDA. Even if this is a windows device, it is not exactly as PC windows (too long to explain, if you keep your PDA long time enough you'll know what I meant to say).
Start by reading your manuals and then turn the PDA on (chortle chortle chortle), sorry, I have the simple clown disease ;-)
Go to see the right mix of apps you want to use (there's a fine sticky thread about this), see if you're in the mood of experimenting with the fine ROMs that some fellows have put up, just let the whole thing capture you.
bye
Perhaps I can help . I am a strong mac user for years. Yes this phone is excellent and in a form of a mini computer, that is if you handle it well.
I have an imate Jasjar and am enjoying this phone having changed from last p9901 sony ericsson. I want to have a perfect pda and so i got it.
1st . Treat you device more like an pda and you will come to love it.
2.You can use it with a mac. However you need to purchase a little software called "Missing Sync". Read it on the web site or google it and it will answer all your questions.
For instance your mac can sync your device via bluetooth or usb.
3. Rest this is a great forum and many developers are here who post their best for newbies like us. You can always do a search to get the info you want and of course your query will be answered.
Cheers
hi there, i own a macbook and i've tried missing sync.
it didn't impress me, missing sync freezes often. but hey since its the only thing available...
though i think that mounting the device as a usb drive could be done.
mac os x is just overskinned linux(kidding hehe).

GPRS Setting with FIDO

I'm using Cingular 8525 (unlocked) in Canada with Fido sim, where can i change the GPRS setting on the phone? i don't see any place that can change it? thanks in advance!
look what I found when I googled Fido "GPRS Settings"
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7418
In any case, Ross Barkman's page is the best for finding your telco settings.
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
To change your settings you have 3 options (I've included details instructions so follow them carefully):
Option 1.
1. Go the box the phone came in
2. Pull out the little book that says user manual
3. Open the book up
4. Read it.
Option 2.
1. Scroll to the top of this page
2. Click on XDA-Wiki
3. Go the Hermes Section
4. Read it.
5. Read it again, so you understand everything not just the GPRS problem.
Option 3 (and I'm gonna hear about this from pof).
1. Click Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Con... Argh, I can't sorry man... you're gonna have to pick 1 or 2.
Forgive me pof, I started feeling sorry for the newbie. I promise I won't do it again!
thanks! i already know what the setting is, but i'm just wondering that will Cingular allow me to change the GPRS settings?
If the phone is unlocked, there is nothing stopping you from changing anything on the phone. For all purposes Cingular is just a name written on your phone, Cingular the company has nothing to do with you anymore unless you have a cingular SIM in your phone.
Thanks for replied, the problme is, the Cingular stock rom doesn't have any icon that let me to change the GPRS setting! there should be a "Network Wizard" on Setting-->Connection , but there is non! when i click on GPRS setting, it only allowing me choose either "PAP authentication" or "CHAP authentication" . i have been playing the GPRS setting for a long time, but didn't get anyting, so should i flash to other rom? thanks in advance!
We are having the same problem
I have an 8125 running with a Movistar Mexico SIM and last Sunday I got its replacement: an 8525, I spent most of the Sunday (and the several days before) reading threads and doing all procedures to unlock it until I succeeded, so now I have an 8525 unlocked supre CID and all that ... "running" with the same SIM and same GPRS set up but I haven´t been able to navigate internet on GPRS (stalls in the "opening" status), I installed spb GPRS Monitor and the traffic is zero Kb on all tries that I´ve made to connect to the internet. I set also my Gmail account which is set up to retreive amails every 15min and although generates GPRS traffic the behavior is totally different as in my 8125. About MS Messenger and Hotmail the GPRS connection hasn´t been imposible. I´m a newbie I know it!! But you expert guys should help us at least with comments, I agree that some people make repeated questions because they don´t want to read, this is not our case, I´ve read a lot and I´m sure eeric di´d it too. PLEASE HELP....
Use this as a guide to putting in GPRS and MMS settings.

Substitute the settings for your network.

Thank you Bny! I do know how to make it and also set the proper strings in my case APN would be internet.movistar.mx and the user name & paswrord is movistar. That´s not really the problem, in fact I do know that I have a connection to my network, the problem is that something happen 8525 than doesn´t allow me to route my connections thru other routes but the one that Cingular has a preset. I really don´t know if is it the Ext ROM, my SIM card (not a 3G card) or the network itself since is not a 3G network !!!?
have any of you guys considered doing a hard reset and then soft reset before the 3 second customization? that way none of the cingular stuff gets installed?!?

I suppose there could be a number of reasons for this. But here is a consideration from my experience albeit on a different network. I entered all the details for my O2 connection as published on several different internet sites. Initially I could not get beyond "connecting" but found a minor error in what I had entered. Now I got as far as "Opening" but never actually open a site. I gave up but happened across a website that suggested that if you get that far i.e. "to opening" then perhaps the only fault would be the port number in proxy settings for HTTP. I checked and it was correctly set to "80". I did searches on the internet and found one that suggested port "8080" and it worked straight away. I only suggest that you check the port number and whether there are alternatives if you are getting as far as "opening".

Do you have Start>setings>connections>connections
Note two "connections" and if you do you get a page titled connections and Two headings 1. My ISP and 2. My Work Network

Thanks Mike and shogunmark! I´ll try the trick to avoid the customisation from Cingular; as far the port setting that´s a good point, however my screen for connection settings only shows 2 tabs: 1)Tasks and 2) Advanced, the 3rd tab (Proxy) that is present in my 8125 is missing in my 8525. Any ideas to make it appear or change the port? Thanks again you guys!
I did it, but it did not work.....
I just tried but it didn´t work either.... let´s see what´s next. Thank You!

I did what shogunmark suggested and it didn´t work either, I´m wondering waht would be the correct proxy server configuration, besides the port number I really don´t know the type of connection (http, wap, sec wap or scocks 4/5), neither the server name
I made the connection
I allways had the right "parameters" to set a proper connection, but I realized that the connection speed is extremely slow (5 Kbps at the most). I open another thread related to the use of a G3 device with a non G3 SIM / network. Thank you all for your help.

If you manage to make progress in improving connection speed, it would be useful to post a solution on this thread. Hope you succeed.

First off, commas and periods are your friend. The search feature here and google can be better friends. I will take a stab and answer your run on sentence. Cell phone carriers often remove features from phones when theyy receive them. But because those features have been removed, doesnt mean it doesnt work, (in most cases). Maybe flashing a cooked rom, doing a registry tweak, or installing a cab or two may help you.
Again, use the search feature, do a little more research, have lots of patient, rephrase and post your question(s) in the appropriate forum. Doing this will significantly decrease the chances of you getting flamed, and improve your chances of getting the help you want. Good luck.
well, give it a try and hack it on your own ?! huuu ? how about that !
normally when nobody posts a reply it means that nobody knows the answer - or it was discussed so often and you did not try the search function.
so, be a part of the community and try finding it out on your own and share it with all of us .
Not important to me!
LOL!!
HOW ROOD!!!!
Man how you word things means everything. How do you think that your going to get some help when you post stupid titles like this come on. We are all here to try to help each other out. What just because you say your mad means that someone is going to help you NOT!!! Man next time try asking you will get alot farther. You have to be a young kid or something with no home training. Lol
Sorry to seem "rood" but I have been researching and all i see is loads of people ,like me, who ask the question in a normal manner and get no response.
Loads of dead Threads thats what i find when i research and give it patience.
I posted this Thread as a last attempt of many from many people.
Sorry for being "rood" but I was very annoyed
also "TheChampJT" wtf!
You said "Not important to me!" and your signature says willing to help
Why would I help you when you cant be bothered.
I could easily have helped with your Samsung SCH-i760 ROM problems but Im not going to now ,your problem!

Ok, trying to understand your issue:
You want to use your network card as an Wifi access point?
- Your network card is only able to get GPRS or EDGE connection and that is dependent of your network provider (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc). If this is what you want, probably your network settings are wrong. You can try and use Network Wizard, which allows you to autoconfigure your device to connect to your network provider facilities.
- Wifi is acquired by a different piece of hardware, and you can't get Wifi where there isn't any access point that allows you to connect to.
Now about the way you presented your problem on the forum: sure, we all get frustrated not to have our questions answered. That can mean the following:
1 - No one understood exactly what is your problem.
2 - Your problem is something new and no one has it.
3 - You could try and use the search engine named Google in an effective way in order to find exactly what you are looking for. I've seen dozens of students searching using the wrong keywords or even trying to search using sentences. Keep it short and keyword based. Combine them with "word word word" or word+word+word.
I guess you got what you wanted: attention. Now all you need is the answer.
IMPORTANT!
y'know, some of you guys on here are absolute stars at being able to remain patient and helpful.
i salute you for this trait. much respect.
peace.
Read here for info about Charmer - MDA Compact II - no wifi hardware included in this device

Missing features
WiFi
WiFi can be done via a WiFi-SDIO card (refer later section for instructions)

and
Wireless / WiFi
Not all WiFi-SDIO cards are compatible with Charmer. Few SanDisk WiFi-SDIO cards have been confirmed to work with Charmer with extra drivers. Refere to the thread for drivers and instructions (related thread)

Network Cards ia part of WM networking framework which is responsible for all the conections like WIFI (it is unavailable for Charmer), GPRS(EDGE and other cellular data connections), Modem connections, Serial Connections and few more - it is the same for all devices because the OS is the same. The OS may support wifi but this option is dependable from hardware and drivers, so if you do not have WIFI hardware and proper driver for it this functionality will remain disabled by the OS
I hope i answered your question

I have no idea what you're even trying to say?
Well, now that you had some attention and some answers, could you please edit the tread title to something more descriptive like "T-Mobile MDA Compact 2 - enabling WiFi" so that other users searching the forum can actually find it? Not to mention that it does seem a bit rude way to request help and doesn't look too good in the forums...
not the best of ways to ask for help

Sorry about my thread, i will get rid of it as soon as i feel most people affected have got this message.

Blackberry Connect

Hello,
First, let me apologise if this has been asked and answered but I went through loads of pages without the answer so I thought I'd ask.
Right, I did have a TYTN II with bbconnect working and full usage of the BB service. Since going to the X1, I can't seem to make it work no mater what I do, including the registry hack I used on the TYTNII.
I get 'Network available' > 'data tunnel enabled' > disconnect and PIN always stays at 'Pending'.
Has anyone figured out how to make this work yet? If not, I think I'll have to sell the X1 and go back to my tyttnii.
thanks in advance!
/frustrated\
Yes, I have been waiting for the BBConnect for my X1 also but it is not available yet at this moment.
I will wait for the BBConnect to be available instead of selling the phone because of this software.
Hi all - 1st time here and posting.
Anyone know if there has been any success on this front?
Looking at getting an X1, but it would be a waste if I couldn't make use of BB Connect.
Anyway, will be watching with keen interest.
Cheers
