I've been thinking about switching from Tmobile to Cingular to benefit from their UMTS network.
Since I already have a TyTN I figured I would order a 3125 and get their Unlimited Smartphone Connect Plan.
I was wondering if this would work with the TyTN and what the settings are.
From what I've been reading online it seems that the Smartphone plan uses Cingular's wap proxy. I was wondering if this would affect the 3G performance.
I wouldn't use the TyTN for tethering (my monthly usage runs around 200-250MB, mostly mail and RSS).
Smartphone Connect Plan
I have the TyTn and have added the Cingular Extended Roms and all is working well... You can add the Cingular Wap settings via cab and depending on the Rom that you have installed, you may or may not have issues with the Express Mail settings and Phone Keypad...
Took me several days to figure out the right combination of Rom and Extended Roms, but I am happy at the moment...
debonairone
I thought I could manually configured the connection... I already have 2 mail accounts setup (one is my work Exchange (push) the other is my personal pop)... don't care much about XpressMail.
I'm running WM6 latest rom.
-If you need XpressMail, go with the SmartPhone connect.
-If you want 200 text messages/month, go with the MediaMax 200 Bundle
Both of those are $19.99, and give you unlimited internet
If you need VPN or isp.cingular, you'll have to get the more expensive PDA connect (or laptop connect) plans.
3G speed is not much worse on wap.cingular if it's worse at all. It's not difficult to setup the data accounts. There are actually very good tutorials on Cingular's website in the help section.
Thanks!
I have no use for the VPN at this point. Xpress mail may be a nice addition since right now I am pulling mail from my personal pop every 30min. Having the push option on this account as well would be nice.
I was just worries that the Smartphone connect plan would not work on a TyTN and that the wap proxy would make things slower (or prevent access to certain pages) but it looks like I'm getting a much cheaper deal yet retain pretty much all the functions I need!
Hi, I have the smartphone connect plan and am running it on my 8525. I bought the phone off eBay new in December and didn't want to get locked into a data contract for 2 years since my contract was up, so I bought the device outright and added this data plan.
I got the smartphone connect unlimited plan. I have been using this since then with good results. On my Cingular account section it actually shows that I have the 8525.
I am actually using it right now as a wireless modem. I have checked the speed and it's around 750 to 1mb overall. I believe it is using the wap.cingular and have full function. I have it pushing my email through my works exchange server and also use it for my personal msn account.
I am on the Cingular MediaNet plan....$19.99 works great here. One thing I would like to point out is that if you have t-mobile...you can just get the $4.99 t-zone..and you can surf all you want and checking emails. Too bad T-mobile's data speed is slow otherwise I would had kept my service.
wow thanks for all the tips! I didn't realize I could get the much cheaper tmobile plan as well.... i'm currently paying $30/month for unlimited data plus wifi which I never use anyways...
In any case from speaking with a few people i think the media max 200 seems like the smartest options as it offers unlimited data plus some text messages and i could use their media (TV) features if needed...
I just gotta figure out how to get the plan since it doesn't seem available to purchase with the Cingular 3125.
You can just add the features/plans you want online after you sign up for Cingular billing at the website.
I used to use T-Mobile as well, and I thought the $4.99 plan only gave you port 80 (http)? I was on an old $19.99/month plan which was unlimited GPRS/EDGE with no Hotspot, which I don't see as an option anymore.
My sister really needs a new phone and is with T-mob USA. I was telling her to get the HD2 when it comes out, and she really likes the phone but she doesn't want to pay for the added internet plan. When I had my Shadow (1st gen) I was able to use the t-mobile lower internet plan (t-zones?) and using proxy server info I was able to use the internet almost 100% normal. There were only a few apps that were odd.
What are the chances that since this is still a WinMo phone it will have that ability? Is this something that can be figured out before the phone comes out? Also, if it did work, would it access 3g data?
Thanks for any help/info.
Nick
When the HD2 launches it will have a required data pack just like all other windows, blackberry's and android devices currently do. If a discount is recieved on the device then the data pack (minimum $25/month) is required, paying full retail price is the only way not to have it. T-zones is no longer offered by itself for $5.99/month unless your plan is a grandfathered plan that supports it but would only be able to be used if the phone was purchased at retail.

i use tmobile in uk if the proxy box is ticked my mail dosent load.
T-Mobile USA now uses the device IMEI for data plans
The proxy trick does not work anymore on Tmobile USA, they now use the phone's IMEI number to verify that the phone is on the correct data package. It works for about 24 hours now then when you try and access the internet you are sent to a screen to add the correct data package.
Proxy internet for HD2 on T-Mobile
I have T-mobile with the $5.99 T-Zones. I used it on the DASH and am now using it on a Touch VIVA. If I buy the HD2 from T-Mobile with no contract are they still going to force me to get a data plan or will my T-Zones stop working. I want to keep my T-Zones and may have to get an ulocked phone.

I'm currently with AT&T and about to switch to T-mobile when the HD2 comes out. When I spoke to the T-mobile rep., (trying to get him to set me up on the cheap data plans instead) He told me T-mobile can tell what phone you are using and know if it is on the correct plan. He also stated that if the phone is unlocked then you can trick their systems into letting you keep your old plan. Now again, I dont know if this is true or not, I am about to switch...hopefully this month, I'll find out then.
With AT&T, I have an old data plan (unlimited internet, 1500 text, 200 MMS) and I pay $19.95/month. they have never made me change my data plan and I am using the Tilt2. If you go through the priemer business website to upgrade your phone, they dont give you the $50 discount and you get to keep your data plan unchanged....all other channels force the upgrade with an updated data plan. Again, the only way around that is to buy your phone from someone else, unlocked, or have warranty dept. swap out your phone for a different model. My nephew has the $10 data plan and is now using the Tilt2 on it via warranty swapping out his phone for a different model (the Tilt2).
I know on the AT&T service you do get the 3g speeds, so I assume it will be the same for T-Mobile (but then again assuming may not be the best way to go). Hope that helped
I am pretty certain that my sister has a grandfathered in 5.99 T-zones package too. I am hoping that she can get it and use this way. The email not loading problem that adamo mentioned though doesn't sound good. Do the other internet based things work ok?

from what I was told, everything should work correctly and at the correct speed, as long as the phone is unlocked. The cell phone service providers don't seem to really offer different speeds at different rate plans like the cable internet companies do.
I had not seen your message from earlier ... we posted at the exact same time. Thanks though for your input. I will let her know. It seems like it is worth a try. Worst case scenario, she has a great phone but she has to use Wifi to check her mail and such.

I just bought my MyTouch 4G and I'm coming from an HD2 with Android loaded on it. With my HD2, I was able to use the phone perfectly fine with my BlackBerry Plan. With the MyTouch, when I try to use the browser, I get redirected to a page telling me to switch my plan. I also get no connection at all when trying to use the market or other apps unless I'm on Wi-Fi. The reason I want to keep my BlackBerry plan is because I still switch my sim to the BlackBerry and the price I have on my plan is cheaper than what they offer now. Is there any way around this?
Last time I researched it you can't, TMo has disabled that on their end since they can detect with phone you have
I don't think so......the reason the BB plan is cheaper is becasue of the way they handle the data (tx/rx). I beleive the packets are smaller (or something like that) which allows for less bandwidth to be used to do the same job. But it's proprietary to BB.
I am not sure if it depends on the market, but here in Northern Virginia I don't think there is a difference between a Blackberry plan and a standard internet plan. At least not for their newer devices. I asked a T-Mobile rep and they confirmed that there was no difference. Not that a T-Mobile rep is necessarily authoritative...lol Same price here. Now, I do know that there is a difference with certain carriers, or at least there used to be. I know there is something different about Blackberry e-mail and web as opposed to regular e-mail and web, but I am not sure it matters for connectivity anymore. When I was with Sprint, there was a difference between a Blackberry plan and regular web plans at that time.
I would call T-Mobile and ask if there is actually a difference in your area.
Blackberries require access to their BIS/BES servers which have to be approved by T-Mobile. But Blackberries do offers browsers that bypass the BIS/BES servers. So yes it will work, but no it's the the "correct way" for it to happen. Now i know T-Mobile eons ago put grandfathered people onto an "employee data plan" which would automatically switch packages depending on the phone you had. It'd work off the IMEI number. I found that out when i was swicthing phone frequently a few years back. i went from a Blackberry 8900 > HTC Diamond > Blackberry 95xx > HTC Touch Pro > HTC magic..... that what i was told by a few mods @ t-mobiles forums.
Both the BB and Android plans cost the same.
"Unlimited" - $20-30/month (cheaper if you are a preferred customer)
200MB - $10-15/month (depending on what plan you have)
In a nutshell: just state that you have switched to an Android phone and you'd like to keep the price of your data plan the same except it should be configured for Android phones. Be nice to the rep. If at first you don't succeed, call, call again.
Like I said, I don't want to switch my plan because I constantly switch between BlackBerry and Android. And again, it worked perfectly fine with my HD2 running Android!!! I don't understand why it works with my Android HD2 but not the MyTouch 4G
The HD2 was one of the last HTC Android phones that was compatible with T-Zones. That pretty much means the HD2 could work on any data plan. Newer Android phones, on the other hand, need to have the Android data plans to work.
As long as you don't use BIS/BES, the Android plan is the way to go. A BB will be able to access the Internet fine with the Android data plan but if you try to access the Internet with an Android device using a BB plan, you'll get that webpage about needing to change plans.
If you do need to use BIS/BES, then you're stuck, since you wouldn't be able to do that on your BB device with the Android plan.
I'm now using samsung focus. I don't want to be charged for data plan because now at&t will automatically recognize smart phone. is there any solution to disable it?
I think you can always call your provider and tell them you do not want data enabled on your account. This will ensure you don't use data accidently and get charged a high premium.
Alternatively you can disable data on the phone. Settings>System>Cellular and then turn the data connection off.
If your phone is carrier unlocked (sim unlocked) you can erase/change the APN settings so it cannot make a data connection.
I've done this before when I gave my son my old WM6.0, or daughter the (now really old) NGage.
One of the other phones I had kept hacking up messages every 30 seconds about not being able to connect, so that one was a bust -- but the X1 was fine with it.
mine is at&t phone. any solution?
In case you Canadians don't know: AT&T, and all other major carriers in US, mandates that any Smartphone MUST subscribe to a data plan.
To OP, there is no known way to evade that data plan requirement unless you use a phone AT&T has no idea of, e.g. a model that is not in the AT&T database. Focus certainly does not fall into that category.
does it mean that i have to take data plan no matter i want it or not?

Yes. Sooner or later, you will receive a text message from AT&T and they will add a data plan for you if you didn't do so. Typically, AT&T will know you have a Smartphone and send you such message the second you turn on your phone but this might not always work that way.
If you check your online account information, you will see that AT&T lists your last used phone model there automatically. So, they know which phone you're using as long as it is a AT&T branded phone via the IMEI look up. It is also reported that AT&T also knows certain phone models sold by some Canadian carriers.
is there any solution to avoid my phone from being recognized by at&t

Buy a non-AT&T phone. That's the only solution.
I remember someone post that you can ask them to put an data block on the account so that you won't trigger the smartphone plan.
is it possible to change its imei
Nothing is impossible but you're on your own. If you changed your IMEI and conflict with another user's handset, bad things could happen. IMEI is your globally unique indentifier of the phone.

just call att customer service and tell them that you do not want data. They tell you that you cant get mms messages. But they will turn off your data if you do not want it, they did for my sons iphone with no problem.

I did call them. and the answer is "no". they said that because u're using a smart phone so that u have to have a data plan. AT&T sucks. they try to cost their customers as always
All major carriers, not just AT&T, require data plan on smartphones. Some, like Verizon, even tried to force you purchase text message plans for non-smartphones.

but I didn't buy their smartphone. I just use their service on my own phone. that's the point. It's unreasonable
t-mobile didn't require the data plan if you use ur own phone and don't sign any contract with them

They didn't say you have to buy their phone. That's not the requirement. Any smartphones, as long as they can recognize, require to purchase the data plan. Unreasonable? Yes. But that is what it is. Nothing you can do about it other than don't use their services at all.
To be fair, these policies started partly due to some idiots using a smartphone without data plan and incurred thousands of dollars of data charge on monthly bill. They cried like baby to AT&T (and other carriers) claiming didn't know data could cost this much and in most part, carriers forgave those idiots for the first bill.
Since obviously there's something fishy about AT&T being able to charge you for a service you do not use, the solution is to have lots of people file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. You can file a complaint on-line. And write to the cell phone manufacturers that there is a demand for phones that can make calls, text, and use wifi, but NOT use phone data plans. Then maybe we could actually just buy such a device and not have to do hacking.
my BB Bold was wifi only and att didnt change my data plan , they knew what I had because changed it in my profile settings
Hey everyone. Hoping someone can help me with this. I'm trying to find a way to use my truly unlimited phone data plan. All of the data plans available that I have access to are capped. My phone plan offers truly unlimited data without any overage, cap, or throttle so I'd like to find a way to do this if possible.
I've searched the forums, but everyone seems pretty focused around needing to use the phone feature on the device. I have no need for that and plan on using google voice and skype for my phone features, I really just want to be sure I don't hit any limits with my data usage.
Any ideas?
If your phone has android you can enable wifi tethering so your phone creates a wifi access point. You can connect then with your Nexus 7 to it and use the data plan of your phone.
Thanks for the tip InvaderX. I do have android, however I'm looking for a replacement to my phone rather than carrying two devices. Also, as soon as I add tethering to my plan I will get a throttled data plan at 5gb. I am aware of how to get aroud this requirement, but really don't feel like carrying two devices.
Well I don't know anything about the plan and how the restriction works.
You can try to use a VPN or fake the user agent string. If it doesn't work they detect the tablet by checking somehow the capability to call / GSM - in this case you can't do much.
