[Q] Use MyTouch with BlackBerry Data Plan? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought my MyTouch 4G and I'm coming from an HD2 with Android loaded on it. With my HD2, I was able to use the phone perfectly fine with my BlackBerry Plan. With the MyTouch, when I try to use the browser, I get redirected to a page telling me to switch my plan. I also get no connection at all when trying to use the market or other apps unless I'm on Wi-Fi. The reason I want to keep my BlackBerry plan is because I still switch my sim to the BlackBerry and the price I have on my plan is cheaper than what they offer now. Is there any way around this?

Last time I researched it you can't, TMo has disabled that on their end since they can detect with phone you have

I don't think so......the reason the BB plan is cheaper is becasue of the way they handle the data (tx/rx). I beleive the packets are smaller (or something like that) which allows for less bandwidth to be used to do the same job. But it's proprietary to BB.

I am not sure if it depends on the market, but here in Northern Virginia I don't think there is a difference between a Blackberry plan and a standard internet plan. At least not for their newer devices. I asked a T-Mobile rep and they confirmed that there was no difference. Not that a T-Mobile rep is necessarily authoritative...lol Same price here. Now, I do know that there is a difference with certain carriers, or at least there used to be. I know there is something different about Blackberry e-mail and web as opposed to regular e-mail and web, but I am not sure it matters for connectivity anymore. When I was with Sprint, there was a difference between a Blackberry plan and regular web plans at that time.
I would call T-Mobile and ask if there is actually a difference in your area.

Blackberries require access to their BIS/BES servers which have to be approved by T-Mobile. But Blackberries do offers browsers that bypass the BIS/BES servers. So yes it will work, but no it's the the "correct way" for it to happen. Now i know T-Mobile eons ago put grandfathered people onto an "employee data plan" which would automatically switch packages depending on the phone you had. It'd work off the IMEI number. I found that out when i was swicthing phone frequently a few years back. i went from a Blackberry 8900 > HTC Diamond > Blackberry 95xx > HTC Touch Pro > HTC magic..... that what i was told by a few mods @ t-mobiles forums.

Both the BB and Android plans cost the same.
"Unlimited" - $20-30/month (cheaper if you are a preferred customer)
200MB - $10-15/month (depending on what plan you have)
In a nutshell: just state that you have switched to an Android phone and you'd like to keep the price of your data plan the same except it should be configured for Android phones. Be nice to the rep. If at first you don't succeed, call, call again.

Like I said, I don't want to switch my plan because I constantly switch between BlackBerry and Android. And again, it worked perfectly fine with my HD2 running Android!!! I don't understand why it works with my Android HD2 but not the MyTouch 4G

The HD2 was one of the last HTC Android phones that was compatible with T-Zones. That pretty much means the HD2 could work on any data plan. Newer Android phones, on the other hand, need to have the Android data plans to work.

As long as you don't use BIS/BES, the Android plan is the way to go. A BB will be able to access the Internet fine with the Android data plan but if you try to access the Internet with an Android device using a BB plan, you'll get that webpage about needing to change plans.
If you do need to use BIS/BES, then you're stuck, since you wouldn't be able to do that on your BB device with the Android plan.

Proxy internet for HD2 on T-mobile?

My sister really needs a new phone and is with T-mob USA. I was telling her to get the HD2 when it comes out, and she really likes the phone but she doesn't want to pay for the added internet plan. When I had my Shadow (1st gen) I was able to use the t-mobile lower internet plan (t-zones?) and using proxy server info I was able to use the internet almost 100% normal. There were only a few apps that were odd.
What are the chances that since this is still a WinMo phone it will have that ability? Is this something that can be figured out before the phone comes out? Also, if it did work, would it access 3g data?
Thanks for any help/info.
Nick
When the HD2 launches it will have a required data pack just like all other windows, blackberry's and android devices currently do. If a discount is recieved on the device then the data pack (minimum $25/month) is required, paying full retail price is the only way not to have it. T-zones is no longer offered by itself for $5.99/month unless your plan is a grandfathered plan that supports it but would only be able to be used if the phone was purchased at retail.

i use tmobile in uk if the proxy box is ticked my mail dosent load.
T-Mobile USA now uses the device IMEI for data plans
The proxy trick does not work anymore on Tmobile USA, they now use the phone's IMEI number to verify that the phone is on the correct data package. It works for about 24 hours now then when you try and access the internet you are sent to a screen to add the correct data package.
Proxy internet for HD2 on T-Mobile
I have T-mobile with the $5.99 T-Zones. I used it on the DASH and am now using it on a Touch VIVA. If I buy the HD2 from T-Mobile with no contract are they still going to force me to get a data plan or will my T-Zones stop working. I want to keep my T-Zones and may have to get an ulocked phone.

I'm currently with AT&T and about to switch to T-mobile when the HD2 comes out. When I spoke to the T-mobile rep., (trying to get him to set me up on the cheap data plans instead) He told me T-mobile can tell what phone you are using and know if it is on the correct plan. He also stated that if the phone is unlocked then you can trick their systems into letting you keep your old plan. Now again, I dont know if this is true or not, I am about to switch...hopefully this month, I'll find out then.
With AT&T, I have an old data plan (unlimited internet, 1500 text, 200 MMS) and I pay $19.95/month. they have never made me change my data plan and I am using the Tilt2. If you go through the priemer business website to upgrade your phone, they dont give you the $50 discount and you get to keep your data plan unchanged....all other channels force the upgrade with an updated data plan. Again, the only way around that is to buy your phone from someone else, unlocked, or have warranty dept. swap out your phone for a different model. My nephew has the $10 data plan and is now using the Tilt2 on it via warranty swapping out his phone for a different model (the Tilt2).
I know on the AT&T service you do get the 3g speeds, so I assume it will be the same for T-Mobile (but then again assuming may not be the best way to go). Hope that helped
I am pretty certain that my sister has a grandfathered in 5.99 T-zones package too. I am hoping that she can get it and use this way. The email not loading problem that adamo mentioned though doesn't sound good. Do the other internet based things work ok?

from what I was told, everything should work correctly and at the correct speed, as long as the phone is unlocked. The cell phone service providers don't seem to really offer different speeds at different rate plans like the cable internet companies do.
I had not seen your message from earlier ... we posted at the exact same time. Thanks though for your input. I will let her know. It seems like it is worth a try. Worst case scenario, she has a great phone but she has to use Wifi to check her mail and such.

How can I make a mytouch3G to work with T-Mobile's BlackBerry data plan?

I know that a non-T-Mobile branded HTC Magic will work with the T-Mobile BlackBerry Plan; however, a T-Mobile branded can only work with T-Mobile's google plan.
How can I make the T-Mobile branded myTouch3G to work with T-Mobile Blackberry plan?
I tried to unlocked and rooted the myTouch3G, but still doesn't work with t-mobile blackberry plan. (Every time i start browsing, it will direct me to the data plan upgrade page.)
Can I fresh the Kernel or something to make it work?
Thanks
you know your posting this in the wrong section right?? try the q&a section next time... and as far as i know i dont think its possible.... have you tried flashing a non tmobile rom?? you may want to go check out the g1/dream forum..
sorry about the wrong section posting...
I tried on a non-Tmobile ROM, but still not working... but I just could not find the element that locks up on the T-Mobile branded phones.
Can't be done. T-Mobile knows your imei and sees it everytime you connect to the internet. That is why you get routed to the upgrade page. Short of changing your imei (which is illegal), you'll need to get the google plan.
Ok do this.
Open your blackberry take out the mother board and everythign screena dn all..
Then JAM that **** right into your myrtouch 3G and use about 10-20 slices of tape to hold everything together.
then get another strip of tape and put the battery in and tape it so it holds the everything in place.
Now trn on your blacktouch2G custom and it should work without a problem...
Although its useless you can just say swap your grandfather plan to your mytouch3g as the same price and you will be ok.

Blackberry plan
To give you an idea of how tmo's data plans work I'll break it down as I used to work for them. The blackberry plan adds two apn's to your profile on the switch. epc.tmobile.com and tmo.blackberry.net. This also adds a filter on the back end that will only allow a blackberry device to access the internet with this plan. There are two other plans that you can have on your account. Total internet and the android plan. Both of these add identical apn's to your profile on the switch. epc.tmobile.com, internet2.voicestream.com, and wap.voicestream.com. Once again, there will be a filter on the back end. If you try to use an android device with the total internet plan you will be able to browse the internet but not through any of the applications and the market will be out of your reach. The only way that you will get full functionality out of that lovely little phone is to add the appropriate android plan... sorry!
I may be in the minority, but I haven't had any problems with that. I just bought a MyTouch 3G off of craigslist and I currently own a BB 9700 with BIS through T-Mobile. When I bought the phone I popped in my SIM card, registered the phone with my Gmail account, and had no problems browsing the web and utilizing the Android Market. It's been about 3 days since I've been using the Mytouch and I have yet to have had to contact T-Mobile to change my plan.

you're in the minority. my BIS data plan lasted 3 minutes (enough to get through activation) on the mytouch before i got routed to the upgrade page. stuff still works on wifi though.
just call and change your plan. costs the same unless you've got a grandfathered plan.
Interesting. I switched off the MT3G for the Bold 9700 on the day it came out. Lately I've had an itch to use Android, which I can't due to the plan. Oddly enough, however, when I put my SIM into my TouchPro2 (running Windows Mobile 6.5, of course) I get full internet as if I had the Total Internet package on there. I find that interesting, since there's supposed to be a filter. But I used my TouchPro for 3 days with no issue. I even used WMWifiTether to share the internet off to my iPod touch for Pandora/streaming podcasts. But soon as I put it into my MT3G, I can't get the activation done. I don't even get a short grace period, it's almost instant lock-out. But I can put it back in the TouchPro2 and there's no problem. And back into the BlackBerry and all my emails come in, my messages from BBM (which is the main reason I don't want to switch plans. As soon as u switch plans, your BB account is suspended, so emails to your @tmo.blackberry.net account bounce back, and BBM won't receive any messages, as well as PIN messages just hang in limbo, AFAIK).
SO, what's the deal here, is there an APN setting somewhere, or is it truly IMEI filtering? Would it be possible to plug the MT3G IMEI into the BIS management interface? I would guess not, since the first so many numbers of the IMEI determine the type of device, and they could limit it only to BlackBerry devices.

there's no way around it for the mytouch. my BIS plan worked on the iphone, but that's a phone they don't have control over. pretty sure once your mytouch registers with it's imei# on the network that tmobile detects it's on the "wrong plan" and gives you the upgrade message. not sure why though, since they are the same price. same thing happens w/ iphone on blackberry plan w/ at&t, except at&t doesn't completely block data like t-mobile does.
not really BIS's fault. would make no sense to register the imei on BIS. it's t-mobiles issue. they want everyone using a mytouch on a mytouch plan. i'm guessing because they get more money per subscription from google than they do with BB.
TP2 + BB data plan = no MMS??

I've had the T-Mo $19.99/month BB BIS add-on for a long time but switched phones to the Touch Pro 2. I also get good internet speed - phone & SMS work well, too. Have you been able to send or receive MMS on the TP2 with your BB plan? I have not and was told by T-Mo (who offered to sell me a more expensive plan) that my TP2 sends MMS via the data plan and the two are incompatible. Bugs me that my kids' cheap camera phones send/receive MMS just fine without a data plan.

how would that explain that it worked fine until i changed phones?plus the guy said i just have to switch your data plan from android to windows mobile.as i was checking out,
There are different data services that T-Mobile offers. I had to call and have them switch it when I recieved my Hd2 from Android data to standard data. Same for my gf when she switched from a Motorola Cliq (what a pos that was) to a BB Curve (not much better IMHO). They all cost the same and I would bet they are the same service. It must be a book keeping thing. There is probably no way around it, other than a call to customer service.
T-Mobile does have a way to separate the data plan for Android devices. At least I know its different for the G1.
I purchased the HD2 as a new line with data. I then canceled my G1 line and factory reset the G1. I put in the sim from my HD2 into the G1 but did not get data. I added an Android data plan on my wife's sim card and put that into the G1 and it works great.
So yes, T-Mobile has a different type of a plan for android devices, at least for the G1.
I also recently called in and told them I need to switch between the G1 and the HD2 on the same sim every other day. They said I'll have to call each time to change the data plan for it to work.
I asked them isn't there a data plan that works for both phones, the answer was no.

I was told by a rep it takes 2 to 48 hours to switch data services.
You could just figure out a way for the G1 to spoof it's identity as a WinMo device. Oh wait...that's not allowed...lolol.
On a serious note, the phones identify themselves in such a way as the T-mobile system knows if your using Android/WinMo/BB. Is it stupid? Absolutely. Can we do anything about it...not really...at least legally...lol.
Well when I had my Nexus One, I came from an iPhone so I had the regular Unlimited Web instead of the Android Web. I popped in my sim card w/o switching anything and surprisingly it worked right away, after I had everything set up then I called to switch. I then switched to the BlackBerry so I changed the internet to the BlackBerry Unlimited, and now using an iPhone as well on the BB Data Plan.
I switch quite frequently between my HD2, a TouchPro2, Nexus One, and a G1 and my data works in all of them. No calling a rep, no having to switch plans... i havent had any problems with anything so far.
I'm on the Android Unlimited Web plan. It works for my G1 and HD2.
The customer service rep will tell you that you need to switch and they are not compatible, but it is for me and other people. There was an older thread where other people also have it set up with the Android Unlimited Web.
I switched to back to Android Unlimited Web before since I wanted to test some things on my G1, and didn't switch back when I realized it also worked with my HD2. The other plan does NOT work with the G1, only the HD2.
My SIM worked fine
I just got an HD2 on Craigslist. I have the G1 data plan and when I put my SIM into the HD2 everything worked fine. My internet. text mms. all are working just fine. I don't think there is a real need to change your data services with the carrier.

[Q] Rogers data plan not working?

So a couple of weeks ago I bought a new HTC desire outright on Telus. I got it unlocked to use with my rogers prepaid sim card. So far so good.
But when popped it in, set up the apn and tested out the internet, I got a message saying: "Before using the mobile internet, you must have a valid mobile internet option. To continue, select from the following:" and it went on to list the data day and week passes for smartphones.
But, i DO have data. I have the socialite 20 prepaid data plan which includes
unlimited internet. Before the desire, I was using the plan with my blackberry bold just fine. Anyone have any ideas as to why my generic data plan worked on my bb but not my htc?
Any help is much appreciated, thanks.
Maybe cause your on a blackberry specific plan ?
im not really sure never had this problem
then again i never used an unlock phone on rogers just got a phone with a 3 year contract :\
That's what i thought at first. but I'm just on a regular data plan.
something similar happened like that and I called rogers who assured me out was a glitch in their system. just needs a data reset.

so all i have to do is ask rogers to reset my data?
I remember that the unlimited data only applies to the selected payg rogers phones using the wpa network?

i think he meant "wap"
also, I'm not sure if you've called rogers yet but i know that plans are dependent on phones anymore - for example you can use your blackberry on an iphone data plan and vice versa - when I HUPed to the iphone 4 i was on a regular data on one line and a blackberry on another - i thought I would have to switch both lines to iphone plans but they said that it's been set so that I can switch "data" between both phones so no plan change was necessary.
I think you should just call Rogers and see what they say, likely what will happen is they will "reset" your data and you'll remove the battery and the sim for 10 seconds then put everything back and it should work fine.
I don't think pay as you go is any different but I'm speaking from contract experience

Well, I gave that a try, but no dice. , when i turned on my phone after they reset my data, i still got the same message, any ideas? The person i was talking to said that it would only work with feature phones and not smartphones. But obviously not as i could use my blackberry...
Any help, ideas, or opinions, ate greatly appreciated.
And I could just get an android data plan but I can't afford paying around 60 bucks per month for the amount of data I use, around 3 gigs.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Naive question : have you tried to put your SIM (the present one you have in your Desire) in your old Blackberry ?
If it's not working either then definitely a problem with your carrier (probably misconfiged your plan when you changed your phone). Just call'em again and again...Sorry no more ideas then...
If it's working in your BB and not your HTC then probably a conf problem on the phone itself OR (like said earlier) your data plan (not the fees you pay or the customer contract but I mean the real configuration of your profile in the network) that is not the same for a BB and a regular smartphone.
That's nearly always the case, BB using different data services that other constructor....If that's the case then......calling carrier support again and again and again to make them correct that...
As for the network conf of the HTC itself, I guess you have verified everything, especially the APN part ?

so i gave that a shot and it works fine in the bb, and yea i double checked my apn settings, guess im just going to have to bug rogers untill they point me in the right direction
I think your problem is that you are not using a valid smartphone data plan, the unlimited internet option is only available to Roger's dumbphones/bb. If everyone were able to get unlimited internet on their smart phones with $10 a month, there wouldn't be a need for a data plan right?
so i found something interesting today,
if i toggle the data on and immediatly load a page, news feed, video, whatever, i can get maybe 3-5 seconds of working data, which is progress
its as though it starts and then identifies the phone i have, and sees that its a smartphone, so it shuts it off... or is this a phone problem?
also, if it is and i.d. thing, is there any way to make your phone appear as though its a dumbphone? sort of like changing the user agent or something?
thanks in advance
i hope you've had your data plan restored, but in case you haven't, i asked Rogers for a "special reset".
i rooted and flashed cyanogenmod 6.1
my data was working
then when in windsor, it lost my Rogers (Canada) data network but logged on to an American AT&T data network
Even when Rogers was available again, and AT&T was not, it just never came back.
the technician told me it might have stuck to the AT&T network and a data reset would fix it.
it did!

[Q] Serious Data Issue/Question

Hey Guys I tried to do the usual search for this issue but didn't find anything so I must ask
Just got a MyTouch 4G brand new through a friend but without having to extend my contract/change services.
So my data service on my account is the old $24 Unlimitted BB Add-On which has worked just fine with a blackberry, TouchPro 2, HD2. Even an iPhone that I've used receives data(albeit in 2G).
With the HD2 I used many Android ROMs which work very well and have gotten up to 5mbps data.
However, the new MyTouch 4G refuses to get any data from T-Mobile and when opening the browser it says "Your Data Plan does not work on this device"
My question is, Is this something within the phone that rooting + flashing a custom ROM might fix?
Or is my data plan really not usable with this phone? And if its the latter, how come data works on the HD2 while running Android and even NANDroid ?
THANKS !
If you are with T-Mobile for quite some time, call them and get the $20 Android Preferred plan (unlimited 4G).
