yes. if you were me and i were you, id swap screens. i can have the casing banged up to all hell but the screen must be flawless. even hearing about a dead pixel from a stranger's phone is making me want to go clean my screen.
yea i wasnt happy when i turned it on and seen a red dot.. my heart about dropped
Hi, it sounds stuck, not dead, I actully tossed my stylus at my screen one day, When it froze up, and caused a pixel to stick blue, after some work rubbing it out with the round of my fingernail, or the curved butt end of the stylus which almost completely removed it, and giving it a few days with diff color screens, it finally unstuck.
There are some apps that are supposed to help fix screens also for ppc's.
Might as well give it a shot, if youre considering replacement, it did take a fair bit of pressure, you should see it turn black, then release.
what apps are these that u talk about?
ive used http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=377&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 and doesnt seem to be working
aslo used http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=44756 which is the same thing.. guess ill let it run over night like the guy did
are you sure htc won't let you get it repaired under warranty?
i had a mda compact II i bought off ebay and rang them up, saying i was told to contact them, they repaired it all under warranty and i had it back within a week (they had to replace the mainboard.lol.dont ask!)
try HTC!

Opps, I didnt catch that second link, till I hit reply, but the first is one I tried, and I had seen one other, but it required the .net framework, I was too freakin out at the moment to really have patience with the apps, because the blue pixel was staring me right in the face on my black todaypaper.
If that doesnt work running it, I recommend setting a black background, and gently applying pressure, until you see the pixel go black, and then work it back and forth between red/black in a circular/orbital type motion over the pixel, if it doesnt fully go away, but appears more faint, just give it a few days, and maybe even switch out your today screen a few times a day, but just make sure it isnt red, even occasionaly massaging the pixel from time to time, thats tthe method I used, and mine went away, hope you have the same luck.
stuck pixels
I had a stuck pixel and I was able to get rid of it using a combination of the stuck pixel fix movie and rubbing. It's good to do it while the unit is warm or hot...like leave it in the car and then rub that area using moderate pressure. There are plenty of guides on the web to fixing stuck pixels on lcd monitors. Consult one of those.
ok ill try that angelis..
i dont think i can contact htc about this.. i sorta got the phone on the DL..
none of these tips have worked.. still have this little red pixel. crazy thing is.. when i have yellow or green on the screen the pixel turns green or yellow depending on the background color.. this makes no sense
Jacob, search Ebay for Hermes parts.. and see if you can get a new screen...
im so trying to avoid that..
can you post a pictuer of this screen? just curious...lol
how do u expect me to do that? lol.. theres no way my digital will pick up 1 dead pixel
ahh....ya...lol
Folks,
After complaining to T-mobile UK about the gap at the top of my G2's screen and a couple of dead pixels (see thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=542534) they kindly sent me another within 3 days. Unfortunately though this one has no gap (thanks) there are now 3 noticable dead pixels on the screen (most noticable on startup at t-mobile splash screen).
I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem and get a bead on what others are doing about it. Problem is now I have already had a swap out these guys are now saying the policy is to bring the phone into a t-mobile store and have it sent off to be checked which to me is TOTALLY unreasonable as the handset is supposed to be brand new.. ARRRGGGHH!!! Am I just being REALLY over the top? Should I just have to put up with the dead pixels??
i suppose it really does just depend on how bad they are.
I know you would just be on the edge of HTC's policy on pixels...they usually won't touch anything under four unless they're really obvious
Hmm.. Well there is one which is REALLY noticable during the startup and less so during operation. The other two are not quite as obvious during startup and practically invisible during normal ops. Thing I really want to know is whether or not this is common among users of this phone and they are just living with it as it doesn't really affect the use of the phone or is it just me that this is happening with?
People. If any of you are out there especially if you are on a UK t-mobile contract could you please try switching off your phone then switching it on and check you screen while the splash screen loads and see if you notice any dead pixels or see if you can get a black background and check.
I would be reluctant but prepared to put up with this if it were something which was the norm for the majority of new G2 handsets and really dont want to keep swapping my phone only for the dead pixels to be more noticable on the replacement. I guess it's just a peace of mind in numbers thing.
with current LCD technology, the odd dead pixel here and there is fairly normal, but thankfully not as wide spread as it used to be.
I've not seen any on the ones i have seen, and never had a dead pixel on the HTC built devices i have personally owned (going back to 2003/4), although my one and only PSP, which i bought the day it was released, had a crap load of them and was sold very soon afterwards!
I don't think it is particularly widespread to be honest, but there will always be one or two devices in a run that get a dodgy pixel or two.
have you checked the market to see if there is a pixel conditioning app? I'm sure i saw one somewhere. They don't always work, but it cant hurt to try...sometimes they come unstuck after a while.
oh, and i also have a t-mobile one. None on mine.
Dude.. Fortunately the only guy responding to this post is a guy who is being as helpful as you I can;t say I am even aware that pixel conditioning apps exist.. I'll have a look.

i've already pissed someone here off this morning before they kicked in!!
I bought a sim free Hero from Mobilefun. I'm now on my THIRD Hero due to replacing the last 2. The current one and first didn't have any screen issues but the second one did. As soon as i swithced it on, big bright spots. Sent it back straight away of course, as this is unacceptable.
The current one has a minor cosmetic flaw but I'm keeping it this time
Don't worry about being OTT about this. You pay a lot of money, you want something top notch.
Edit: Incidentally, Mobilefun customer service is the best I've experienced. Both handsets were replaced and in the palm of my hand again within 48 hours!

I have a t-mobile contract hero, I can't see any dead pixels on the splash screen.
There is a tiny gap at the top (ie you can see some copper if you hold it at the right angle to a bright light, but It seems to be the same as all around the rest of the screen and so it doesn't really worry me.
Dude.. As far as the gap in the screen goes there SHOULDN'T be one. I had one on the last handset and changed mine. As I explained this one has some dead pixels but the gap is gone. I repeat it should NOT be there. All manner of dust and debri will eventually get stuck in there and on the underside of the display I am sure. If you can change it I certainly would. I think I will be attempting to change mine again (sigh)
definitely should not be a gap.
my first one does not have one, i'm waiting to see what the state of the second one is when i get home this afternoon. i hope it's ok.
I have a dead pixel as well in the top left corner but it's only noticeable on the startup screen so I don't mind. It's actually quite common with LCDs, my girlfriends iPhone has a couple and I've had phones in the past with some. You can google nearly any phone and find people dead pixels..palm pre, iphone 3gs, blackberry etc. You can return it but then you run the risk of getting a phone with other issues or more dead pixels.
my HTC Hero has 3 dead pixels but they dont bother me at all .

You know i thought i had dead pixels at startup under the hero word, but when i loaded a pixel fixer app to check the dead pixes by cycleing different colours on the screen nothing showed im convinced the start up animation is glitched and makes it look like dead pixels!! get the app and check!!
I have a dead pixel too and mailed to the company from where i bought it. I mean, did pay a lot of money for it, 440€, so i expect a device wich has no dead pixels or gaps at all!! .
Let you know how things go.
cheers
I have 3 dead pixels on the startup screen one in the very top right. I don't notice them when the phone is in normal operation. if I get anymore I will be tempted to send. it back.

Sorry, now back to the topic....
second g2 arrived and no gap or dead pixels on that one either.
Right, I've decided to ring T mobile about replacing my Hero due to the gap. Will it be an issue that it's more than 7 days since I recieved my phone?
T-Mobile will usually try and be funny with anyone requesting the return of a handset after 7 days but just stick to your guns.. The item is faulty but not instantly noticable. If you catch the rigt person you will be ok.. Just try calling back a few times if necessary. I think half the time I get stuff from them I because i hassle them so much.
By the way.. Can anyone recommend a good pixel testing/fixing app??
I brought my Imagio in to get a new one under the 30 day worryfree.
The new imagio has a much less sensitive screen and oddly enough, it displays the battery up in the taskbar.
I figured it was worth sharing.
Also, does anyone have any tips on how to improve screen sensitivity? My last one was amazing.
I would do a hard reset. I got a replacement and the screen would not automatically turn off. After a hard reset all was great. Little quirks sometimes happen.
thanks, ill give that a try. i dont believe the phone to be defective because im noticing small improvements in the new one. a crisper sound, less light leak from around the screen and just a sturdier feel. while i have your attention what is your calibration data? im trying to figure out the ideal values.
I am just using the defaults, I have not made any adjustments.
I did a hard reset and changed my PressureThreshold to 900. I changed my PanGestureDistanceThreshold to 80. Everything is working to my liking now.

where do you get to these settings? somewhere in the registry i guess, sorry for my ignorance
I really think the first set of phones that were available had problems, I had mine replaced and the battery is so much better. There was slight light leakage at the buttom ofthe screen on the first phone, none on the second.
Weird
i agree, i think the first wave had some issues. it'd make sense. this second one is working so much better.
to find these setting youll want to go to...
HKLM>DRIVERS>TOUCHPANEL and youll see Pressurethreshhold
as for the the other...
HKLM>HARDWARE>DEVICEMAP>TOUCH and youll see PanGestureDistanceThreshold
The second path i listed is also where you will find calibration data.
I use PHM RegEdit.
If anyone knows some more about reg tweaks that affect the screen please share!

When I got my original and my recent warranty replacement I noticed the screen was almost "sticky" and hard to swipe and it went away after a day of use.
Someone else I know just got one and their didn't work right out of the box and needed a hard reset and then it was OK. That of course makes no sense to me.
I ordered mine the day they became available. I don't know if I can explain it but it ran pretty poorly (sluggish performance) but after a hard reset it seemed to clear up any problems. What prompted you to replace it?
There is a slight gap between the screen and the buttons that some light does leak out of. Is this cause for concern or just cosmetic? (Seeing as how I'm more or less locked into this phone for the next 2 years.)
I also am wondering the same thing.
I posted a thread on the other forum wondering what everyone's thoughts were on the screen gap.
I love the phone and noticed all of the stores demos are perfect without the gap.
Wondering if I should replace, deal with with the cosmetic annoyance or worry about the long term effects?????

I'm calling for a warrantee replacement today, I just can't take it any more. I really like this phone, but boy does the build quality suck.
its purely cosmetic no worries. i have the same gap and have heard lots of people report the same light leak in the location. its completely normal. unless you notice the the light leak becomes more severe or your screen gets a little bit of rippling (both of which i HIGHLY doubt will ever happen) you have nothing to worry about.
also, i noticed the same thing with the screen almost being "sticky". im not sure what it is, but i either adjusted to it or it went away
its not possible for them to seal in all light. the chief concern is making sure dust and moisture cant seep in. the screen is sort of like a big button in this respect. around every button there is light leak.

My first Imagio did not have any light leaking/bleeding around the edge, my replacement does. So I do have to disagree with you that there is no way around it. It may be purely cosmetic, but cosmetics is a factor in purchasing a phone. Otherwise we would all buy ugly Moto phones. So while I know for some people they will deal with it, I am calling V to get an exchange.
My HD2 has been awesome so far, but it recently got a little bit chilly outside, and I live in Ottawa in Canada, so this is a pretty pressing concern. When the phone is being used outside, it seems like the cold weather causes the screen to go a little bit wonky.
When i'm texting, sometimes it won't register my fingers pressing the screen, or it will think that im HOLDING down the button. This wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't live in Canada and winter is coming, but it is and I do. Any help or knowledge in the matter would really be appreciated.
I bought the phone off of Ebay so i'm not sure if it has any sort of warranty on it, Is there any way of telling what revision of screen the phone has? Can i buy a new LCD/Digitizer/whatever on Ebay to fix the problem?
P.S. I searched for cold and screen and LCD but i couldn't find anything relevant to my question. If I missed something, sorry!
Heres a couple things you can try- If you have a screen protector on the phone, remove it and replace it with a new one. I have found that even with a good fitting screen protector, dirt and such can still get under it and cause mispresses. Not relevant to the cold I know, but still something to try. Now, does the device work well under room tempreature conditions? Third, to see what revision you have, check these out: Is your device T-Mobile branded? Under your battery cover, what color is your reset button-yellow or red?
It is tmous with a yellow reset button. It works great inside at room temps. Something to mention is that it does this in Android, not sure if it does in winmo cause I only thought to compare today, but its pretty warm today. HTC said that its still.covered by warranty but is one rather not send it in as is have to pay shipping etc.

Oooh. In android. Your not alone. This happened to my first hd2 with android. I get off the train after a 3 day ride to seattle, then Bam! freaky screen. It froze and usually when the screen turns off, its back. Well, after 20 minutes i hit the reset. The screen never unfroze and i got tmobile to send me a new one. Now i get the new one. Outside? Same thing! I use bangsters with the evo kernel and it does it a LOT less vs. default kernel. If i use gps with the default bangsters kernal, its frozen. period.
Try a different kernel, different build, new radio (?), or even a new windows mobile build.
I am fairly certain, sending it in won't do any good. Your going to be without a phone for a week or more and when you do get it back, same issue. If you know your going to be outside all day and need a working phone, stay in windows mobile. I will bet my life that win mobile will work flawlessly.
Got my SGSII yesterday only to realize that there is a circle on the downleft of screen. It's very annoying. Went to Telenor today but they had no phones left. Only thing to do now is wait 4 weeks for a new one.
Any idé on what this is? Have you checked your own ones?

More people have this. I don't know if it went away with anyone? Some say it should go away and the production process causing it.
I see you also have the 1/3 yellowish/darker screen. I am wondering if there is someone who doesn't have this.
Sorry didn't want you to focuss on it, guess you didn't saw yet. but a lot have this(if not everybody).

wow almost looks like you kept your phone in your pocket with some coin for too long
dial *#0*# to see the menu for individual color display, or use some app like Dead Pixel Detect , to do more tests.

Dont have any problems with my screen. Tried setting higher and lower brightness on different background and saw nothing. Are display problems really that common?

I wouldn't be amused having to wait 4 weeks to get that fixed.

Only thing to do is send it in?
this phone has so many faults.
all you can do is send it back and get another one... and hope that there isnt something wrong with that.

Didn't do anything. Opened it, charged it and booted it. Tested it out and rolled down statusbar, noticed directly and all my happyness for my new phone dissappeared.
I guess its the kind of person who owns the phone..
I myself am almost a perfectionist.. well.. atleast when i buy new things.. why would i want a new product with some minor/ major problems on it?
hardware problems.. not software.. since software can be fixed.
I had the circle on mine, top right of the screen. Made a thread about it last week: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078058
Noticed it shortly after taking delivery of the box when I was viewing some photos. It's not visible on pixels where full brightness is used (no matter if it's R, G, or B), but on anything between black and full white it's visible. Sent mine back yesterday for replacement, but I was told by an Expansys-USA rep that they won't have any in stock till the 30th.
Supposedly it's from the suction cup used on the assembly line and that it's technically supposed to go away over time. Expansys only gives a small window of time for returns, and my circle wasn't showing signs of disappearing. Might wanna have yours swapped out, too.
Thanks, was looking for someone else having this problem.
I live in Sweden and ordered from operator Telenor.
They only have a 7 day DOA, so I called them and because all phones were out both in physical store and on the web, they was going to send me a servicebox that I will pack everything and then send it. Hopefully I will get a new one in a few weeks. They say that it can take up to a month though.
Hey there,
I got the exact same thing, but on the right side of the display. I got this thing just yesterday, I live in Germany.
I really do not want to send it back, especially since it seems display problems are pretty common with this phone and there is no guarantee I'll get another one without it.
Anyone knows if this might go away? I have 4 weeks until I have to send it back.
No idea if it will go away, but if you've got 4 weeks, maybe you can see if it does fade over time? I had a really short period of time to report any problems with the phone to Expansys (48 hours), so I couldn't wait.
Man... 4 weeks..! That seems like such a luxurious amount of time to check for problems with the phone.
I can't see anything like this on my phone...
How can I see/make it:-??
