Need a network manager - Mogul, XV6800 General

Is there some kind of available software to better manage my WiFi networks? My home network needs a static address, but most others are dynamic addressing - and it is a pain to have to switch back and forth.
Is there any software that will allow it to remember the settings for a particular network?
Thanks

WiFi Wep Security problem on NetGear routers

Hi there,
After fuddling around for a while trying to get my XDAiis to hook into my Netgear broadband network, it dawned on me that maybe the advice to try it without security enabled might be worth a try. And lo and behold, it works, with WEP security turned off.
The problem is, I can't turn off WEP security in my work network - so I'm looking for help on what I need to do settings wise to make my XDA talk to the network properly.
So, here's what I do (and what doesn't work)
Open wireless manager, choose the settings of the Rocket network (my work network) and go to Network Key.
Under Data Encryption, I choose WEP, and enter the network key and the proper index (which I've made great pains to check IS the right key and index).
Now, no matter whether I set the Authentication to Open, Shared, WPA or WPA-PSK or if I then change the settings under the 802.1x tab, and cycle them so I've gone through all possible combinations, when I try to go online, I always get a "The page you are looking for cannot be found" error.
So, can anyone tell me what the settings are supposed to be for the Network Key tab and the 802.1x tab? If I know, and it's just plain not working, then at least I know there's something else the matter. But, like I said, i know I've entered the right key and index - and, like I said at the beginning, the XDAiis does hook into the network with security disabled.
Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

Ah,
Don't worry, sorted it myself (I think).
In case something like this occurs with anyone else, after tweaking away, I finally sorting things by setting the router to Shared Key authentication. If it was on Open - or on Automatic, it just wouldn't work, but when I changed the Router to Shared Key, all has fallen into place.
Have a nice day.

fwiw, I had fun trying to connect to my wifi network until I realised that I had to enter the 32 char key into my XDA in uppercase...
thks jdedit yr post sorted me out nicely

Unsure if this matters to you now...
Ok, I've a Netgear DG834G at home and I've never had a problem connecting my wi-fi devices to it. These are the settings I have under the 'Wireless Settings' option in the left hand pane when logged on to the router. They are of course my own personal preferences and straight forward and depending on the sensitivity of your data you may wish to change the encryption strength and whether you use a pre-shared key..
Wireless Network
SSID - (The name of your network)
Region - Europe
Channel - select the channel you wish to use (the number of channels you have available is dependent on the region) I currently use channel 11
Mode - g & b
Wireless access point
Enable wireless - ticked
Allow broadcast of name (SSID) - ticked
Wireless isolation - un-ticked
under Wireless Station Access List
Turn Access control on - ticked
I've added New Stations Manually and explicitly stated the mac addresses for each of the devices I want to allow access to
Apply these and go back to Wireless Settings
Security Options
WEP - radio button selected
WEP Security Encryption
Authentication Type - Automatic
Encryption Strength - 64 bit
WEP Key
Enter a Passphrase and click generate. This will generate 4 Hexedecimal keys. Select the key you want to use by clicking on the radio button. The key you select is used on your device when you set the device up to connect on the first occasion normally and they must be exactly the same!
Hope this helps you if not someone else!

Wifi Problems

Hi All,
I am pulling my hair out over this problem, so I hope someone can help!!!
I have 2 HTC devices, a Touch HD & Diamond 2, I want them to connect to my Wifi at home. I'm using a Netgear WNR2000 router, my problem is that i can connect to the router fine, signal strength is good etc however when I launch Opera it wont display any internet pages & i just get page could not be displayed error.
I have looked in my settings & these are all set up right i think... I have tried connecting the Diamond 2 to a BT Business hub, this work's fine & connect's straight away being able to browse the internet.
I have found a work around for my problem however, this involves inputting my ISP DNS details onto the network card on both phones this will make them connect & i will be able to browse the internet. However i do not want to do this, as i also have a Blackberry 8900 & this connect's just find without any settings.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this issue?? is it the router config or just these phones?? Im using TKIP-PSK also for my algorithm.
Thanks
Dan
You must set your router to assign IP adresses and the DNS servers automatically. In your routers configuration menu usually (192.168.1.1) may vary on different manufactures, there you should be able to set the DNS servers, and then assign them over DHCP, so your router acts as DNS sever but at the same time it contacts your ISP's DNS aswell.
I have a problem similar in yours in nature, so wanted to join this thread
A few days ago, I managed to unlock my Raphael. It was Japanese (HT-01A) so as a result the Radio needed downgrading in order to be able to unlock.
My problem now, which I cannot say for sure is due to the unlocking, is that my WIFI is misbehaving in a way never seen before. Before the Olipro unlock procedure, I had my WIFI connection fine (with WEP algorythm), with all apps needing internet functioning perfectly.
Now, I can connect to the net by GPRS, but not by WIFI. I cannot understand why this might be...Without WEP I can WIFI still, but WEP or any other encryption allows no data transfer.
ANY clues?
Just as curiosity, I see other people on the forum with later versions of OliNex Radio.
Mine is v1.10 yet I see v1.90.
is there an advantage if I change it?
Thanks!

What jasonches is saying is correct. You can set your router to your favorite DNS servers. If I'm not mistaken there should also be a setting to obtain DNS servers automatically.

I've seen a situation similar to this happen on a Netgear router which further strengthens my dislike for netgear products. Back up your settings on the router. Try flashing your router with the newest firmware from the manufacturer's website. Then, test connectivity using no encryption and then testing with encryption using short, easy to remember keys. Is there a reason you're not using WPA2? With WPA2 you can assign a short key to confirm that everything works and then switch to a more complicated key for better protection. WPA2 is also a stronger encryption algorithm than WEP.
I don't think unlocking has anything to do with WIFI connection. However, changing the radio or having an older one might interfere with connections. Upgrading to the newest radio is beneficial because it "should" drain the battery less, increase call quality and increase connectivity speeds. You should do serious research before upgrading your radio.

This is going to sound stupid, but I am stumped...

I am sorry if this turns out to be a stupid/obvious question, but right now I just cannot figure this out! So apologies in advance...
I have a regular data plan associated with my phone, so when I am out and about, I can access the web without problems. At home, the phone will connect either to my own WiFi hotspot (secured) or to my neighbour's (unsecured), and all continues to be well.
Now, while I am at work, I would like the phone to also connect to my office's hotspot, which it does without problems. However, since this connection requires the use of a proxy to connect to the web, I do not get anywhere.
How do I associate the use of a proxy to a specific WiFi profile/connection, and not to the others which are also configured on the phone?
Also, is there a way to tell the phone to give priority to the WiFi connection when available over the 3g connection, or is this done automatically?
TIA!
It's not stupid, there's no separate proxy setting for each Wi-Fi network, just the general "Internet/Work" thingie, but even that wouldn't help because many programs would ignore it (just like it will happen on "big" Windows, by the way - not all programs use IE settings).
So the only workaround I know is to set up your proxy in Opera and turn it on and off manually each time you change networks.
WiFi profiles
Solution is application called WiFi profiles. You can define settings for every wireless network that you use
Thank you very much to both!
I will look into the WiFi Profiles app...

Wifi

Hello,
When looking in the wifi options of my HD2 I saw an option to set a static IP adres with dns etc.
Since I use static IP addresses at home and DHCP disabled, I set it up with a static IP. Works fine...at home. When I was at work I wanted to connect to the wifi there, but was unable to do so, probably because he was trying to use the static IP from home...
Why isn't the HD2 switching between these connections/IP settings?....
If this is not possible, why did they implement the option for a static IP on a mobile phone?
Ty
Just like on your laptop, if you assign a static IP it will keep it even if you move to work and connect there. You have to remove it manually to switch back to DHCP. Nothing uncommon.
If this is not possible, why did they implement the option for a static IP on a mobile phone?

Uhm didn't you give the answer? To connect to a network that has no DHCP...
I mean something as network profiles for each wireless network.
For example on my previous phone, a Samsung Jet, when I looked for wireless networks, I could set up everything for each different network he found.
Meaning when I selected my wifi from home he used the settings with the static IP from that profile, and when I was at work he selected the wireless profile with a DHCP IP from work.
Now I only have 1 set of options regardless of where I want to connect.
A static IP is not really "mobile" friendly to
There's nothing to do that by default in WM.
Seems theres an app for it though:

Well, add a DHCP server at home
The static IP address is a setting for the network card, as you well know. The network card does not change just because you go to a different location. Also, due to a bug with Windows Mobile, you may want to forget about using a static IP address. I don't know about 6.5, but with 6.1 it caused my data connection to try and use the same IP address, which was obviously an issue with my service provider, who just refused the connection every time. I was without a data connection for a day, before I figured out what the problem was.

[Q] Is it possible to renew IP address over GPRS/3G?

I'm using a Nexus One (Android) on Vodafone in Australia and would like to know if it's possible to release/renew an IP address over GPRS/3G.
I've tried using netcfg, ifconfig but none of them seem to actually get another IP. If I shutdown data and start it again, I get another IP.
Any ideas?

Did you try turning airplane mode on and off? That may cause you to get a new IP.
In GPRS your IP is decided by something called a "PDP Context" (a sort of "contract" you have with the Network that decides which data service you can access, what would be the speed of your connection (QoS) and your IP address).
This PDP Context is not easily killed and that's the beauty of the thing : when you're in bad coverage or moving from cell to cell, this PDP permits you to keep your data connection (it'll be probably slower but your web page will go on loading when you'll get coverage again etc...)
So in a word, to renew your IP you must recreate your PDP Context and in order to do that your must reconnect to the network : airplane mode, turn your device off/on or cut data then turning it on like you've just said. No other way...
I'm not an linux expert but I think the "renew" command send an order to the network card. In your phone there's not really a network card but these network protocols, so that's why it doesn't work for me...
I'll search but I think will be the same with 3G Networks...
