Cracked hermes screen - digitizer/LCD distinction - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hey there, I have a crack in my Tytn screen, but the LCD seems to be fine, no bleeding or changes in appearance at all, just a big crack in front of it. It seems as though the crack is in a different layer to the actual LCD, slightly in front of it.
The touchscreen has gone retarded though and is barely usable. I was wondering whether it is just the digitizer I have cracked, and if that can be replaced separately? I have seen Hermes digitizers on eBay for $20ish, as opposed to screens which are more loke $70.
Is it likely that a new digitizer is all I need?

The answer is that you could replace JUST the digitizer. BUT i would not recommend it. You have to seperate the layers, re glue them and the hermes screen can be temperamental at the best of times. So if it was me I'd get the whole package even if does cost more - you'll save yourself a very tricky job.
Mike

Ok, thanks for that. I think I may have a crack at doing i that way, despite the risk. If there's any sort of guide or thread that will help, would be grateful if someone could point me in that direction. Couldn't find anything on the Wiki.

I have not seen a detailed "how to" for this. Here's a thread but I'm not sure it will help much and it's not Hermes specific:

I "accidentally" purchased a Hermes Screen (LCD with Digitizer) for about $50 shipped. Turns out I don't need to replace the screen at all. I did install and test it so I know it works fine.
If you want to save some money on the replacement let me know, I wouldn't mind minimizing my loss!

jam lcd replacement

Anyone replaced their own Jam lcd/touchscreen? I'm thinking of getting a replacement screen off ebay for $100. It doesn't look all that difficult, but I want to make sure it's not harder than it seems to do a self-replacement.

Hi nvrnuff,
Opps, I didn't notice there is a replacment screen and already order a Eten M600. Can you please reply back yr end result if you will buy the replacement screen.
Hey nvrnuff,
Are U breaking the LCD (the display) or the DIGITIZER GLASSTOP(the touchscreen sensor) like me. I just found out they are 2 seperate things from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51395&highlight=lcd after research
Answering my own question:
Jack, it doesn't matter with the Jam. They're all one assembly. Even PPCtechs can't replace only one or the other on this device; they always replace the whole assembly, LCD and touchscreen both. But I know what you mean, and yes it is possible to have a working LCD and broken touch or vice versa.
Second, I recently replaced my Jam housing and found that the LCD/touchscreen assembly is remarkably easy to replace IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH DISASSEMBLING THE JAM. For more information on that, read the "Jam housing" thread. I posted there about that whole process on page 3.

looks like your digitizer is broken.
however in the link that Dharkaron had posted (http://www.cellulardr.com/products.php?cat=513), there is replacement screen for around $180, it should contain digitizer in it, but i would check before purchase.
if thats a digitizer only, it should not spread, but you are in risk of damaging your lcd display. (not really relevant if you cant get digitizer by itself though)
Sorry but it looks more like your protection sheet is broken try to take that of maybe it will help ;-)
screen protector u mean? no its not tht I checked tht already how can the protector break its not solid ...so digitizer for $180 that expensive I rather wait for some time and get a new one
well, its the whole screen for 180, but it does not say that it does come with digitizer, so it actually maybe wiyhout one, that is why i would check, digitizer for my old sony was around 100 and it was only digitizer, without lcd, so i would wait and see if you can find digitizer by itself (as long as it is actually separate part and not integrated somehow with lcd...) good luck on your hunt.
@WvaanWaas
screeen protector, as like piece of elastic transparent film broken that way? very unlikely my friend.

There is no way to tell how long it will work. Could work for a day, could work for a year. Chances of further cracks? There is always a chance a crack will get bigger as it's subjected to day to day use. Also, please don't bump your own post, especially after less than a day of waiting. We have lives and don't sit here just to answer people's questions.
This link is just the digitizer, like i said prices seem high to me.

ok i am confused..the broken screen of my g1 is it digitizer or the faceplate? my touch screen is perfect like before even on the cracked part it works like it used to do...i cant feel the crack probably because of the screen protector..if thts the faceplate then its gud

it is digitizer also known as touch screen, faceplate thats whats around (black frame) digitizer/touchscreen is not there, and that is what failed in yours. digitizer/touch screen.
this will not fix the problem: http://www.cellulardr.com/G1FaceplateBlk.htm
this will work: http://www.cellulardr.com/G1FaceplateDigitizerBlk.htm
I think I will continue to use it and wait for some time till I can find cheap digitizer

The glass of the digitizer is broken my friend. Your screen protector should be intact. The LCD should most likely be intact but there no way of telling it 100% by looking at those pictures even though they were good. It doesn't look that bad but it will most likely get worse. Just use gently contact and do not press the screen. You may notice that the digitizer may not respond exactly like before but pretty good. Now there's a bigger risk your LCD will get broke as well if it is subject to heavy pressure.

No the faceplate is just the plastic frame around/above the digitizer. You need the digitizer. Unfortunately CellularDR doesn't sell the digitizer itself but instead they have package of the faceplate+digitizer. That part including many others are out of stock looking at their site.
r4yd3n -> I don't know where you live but if you live in the US or Canada you should be able to order repair parts however if I were you I would send it in. Remember, Cellulardr have strict rules of not shipping outside USA and Canada (Confirmed in email) except probably if you're an american/canadian working overseas.
well the touch screen is still working like before I am surprised ...no effect of broken digitizer on the touch screen
meh
I broke my screen christmas eve
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/members/dzknockout/albums/mine/1605-phone.jpg
(Still fully funtional)
I say leave it till its necessary to get a new one. And rather than buy replacement parts for an arm and a leg, you can send it back to t-mobile for like $110 (provided you have insurance. But honestly, a broken screen isn't that big a deal if it's fully funtional. And my screen is way more f*cked up than yours
ohh yea urz is way too much cracked then my screen ...ok so I will continue to use it and wait for something better.
Good News Google G1 Digitizer Only Now available
Good news guys I just noticed that www.cellulardr.com now sells the Tmobile Google G1 Window Lens with Digitizer only at a lower price: http://www.cellulardr.com/G1Digitizer.htm
They don't have a picture yet so just to be sure I called them and confirmed that this is the correct part. Basically this is the Window Lens Glass with the Touch Screen Digitizer and has the Flex Cable attached to it. It does not include the LCD but I understand that most people that have broken their phone, have only damaged this part.
Hope this helps you guys.
P.S. They told me that they have a limited quantity in stock so if you really need it, jump on it.

Replace Housing / Casing of the Touch HD - Any experience or instructions available?

Hi there,
unfortunately I dropped my Toch HD last weekend on rough ground, the housing ist completely scratched at the corners and looks awful. The lucky part is that technically it still works perfectly and the display/screen is not damaged.
So, I'd like to replace the housing and I've already found some replacement parts on the net (e.g. here for USD 80... i know, quite expensive but for me it's worth it, cheaper offers always welcome though).
The real problem is that I couldn't find any instructions to do it and no hints whether any special tools are necessary. The forum search only delivered rare information. With a proper instruction I would dare to do it myself, but without I'm afraid to damage the device.
So has anybody got a detailed instruction or experience changing the housing?
would be grat,
thanks in advance,
regards jan
Isn't this what you are looking for?
http://htcdriver.com/index.php?page=htc-blackstone-touch-hd-service-manual
And congratulations for not damaging the screen, because this is what happened to me (see the attachment), and amazingly everything works .
Thank You, exactly what I was looking for...
...however, it looks much more complicated than I expected... have to toke some time to analyze the instruction for which steps are necessary for changing the casing only without complete disassembly... not sure yet if I should dare it...
but, anyway, thank you again!
regards jan
P.S.1: has anybody tried it yet and have some experience to share?
P.S.2: I'm not sure about the "plastic stick" shown in the disassembly part... whether it's really just a flat and bit flexible plastic stick or if itr has any special tip...
try, it's easy
I did it on a P3600 and it was not so difficult, just take your time (at least one hour).
Read everything carrefully before starting, prepare tools and clean your hands
I also dropped my touch hd and dented the front bezel. I have bought a complete replacement housing and tools required for only £25 on ebay.
I have read the service manual and it doesn't deal with removing the lcd screen from the bezel. I read somewhere that it is a complete unit and you can't detach it easily
The new case is still in its box until I can find more out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Yup it isn't as easy as it looks. The manual lacks details as it only tells you how and where but did not elaborate more on minor yet important details.
I bought an antenna cover from ebay to replace, and boy, removing the cover was not easy at all. I used to take apart my other phones all the time and HD is the most difficult one I've done. I ended up breaking the small plastic sockets (that clicks the cover firmly into place) of the original cover. Luckily I have a new one to fit back in. Originally I wanted to replace the whole housing myself but I stopped after the antenna cover until I get a video of how its done.
So anyone? Kindly? Any videos please? XD
still no videos out there?
not looking good for us as i still can't find any video tutorials out there so im assuming that its super hard to do
please can anyone assist?

Replacement Screen overlay?

I got my htc off ebay and the screen is a little scratched, it doesnt effect use at all but i was wandering if it were possible to replace just the front plastic layer and not the whole screen?

Yes it´s possible
But first to know what HTC you have?
This section called Universal does not means all HTC devices, it´s a model!!
Orange SPV M5000 / HTC Universal.
Are we talking about screen protector? Then just buy another one and apply.
If we are talking about digitizer, it's a part of the screen that is responsible for the touch function. That part is better replaced by an experienced technician, and I take it, you are not an experienced technician.
The alternative is to replace the entire LCD unit.
It looks like it's integral to the unit but is definitely plasticcy and not glass-like like i'd expect the front of an LCD to be, guess it must be the digitiser. Replacing any part of it shouldnt be a problem i've soldered and hacked smaller devices before, guess it'd just be getting hold of the part cheaply that'd be the problem.

Not a problem to buy a digitizer at all, they are just a few bucks on eBay. Just make sure you know what is involved before you do. Good luck.
Found some on ebay, will read up on the procedure before I take the plunge, thanks for the tips

You had better read the following dialogue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3906555
I ended up having to obtain a whole new screen+digitizer. Soldering is not the issue - it's the way you do it! Be warned.
I've put the dialogue together on the Wiki here

Dropped my precious HD2 ... doh!

Hey guys,
Just got out the car, fell over the cat and my HD2 has slipped from my top pocket and slammed screen down into the concrete driveway, doh! The screen is obliterated with cracks ... however
1. The picture is 100% clear/fine
2. The touchscreen works 100%
Can I just replace the top glass cover/screen, or is it an all in one combined unit? Im confident with electronics, just wish to know the answer before part hunting and stripping the device.
Cheers

I would call HTC. They are good on their prices when it comes to fixing stuff that is out of warranty. A guy I knew got his Nexus One screen replaced for $90.

Problem is, I cannot afford to be without my phone, the phone is still usable its just difficult to read through the cracks, the image and touchscreen still work perfect, it's as if another layer of glass sits overtop.
Im 100% confident in stripping electronics etc, was just after a quick answer as to whether anyone knew if this was likely to be an entire screen or just a digitizer, if no one knows I will just strip it down tomorrow when I can get to my T drivers.

I'm happy to repair myself as I see no reason to pay someone money when I work with electronics daily and I can locate parts easily, just need to know if its the digitizer or the LCD that's broken without pulling the device apart.
Also, thank you for the link above, will give that a look now, I really think it's just the top digitizer as the screen still shows a crystal clear image, the backlight works fine and the touchscreen works too, its just badly cracked.
This happened to me (apart from the cat), however it seems you got lucky, the LED screen decided to break, has all funny white lines over it but the glass is perfect.
^^ As far as going to fix it your self is concerned, I would have tried myself, however I just know with my luck that something would go wrong and it wouldnt work D:
I usually go via the DIY route but I've seen too many stories where HD2 repairs have gone horribly wrong. It seems that replacing one part is fairly straightforward but avoiding damage to others is not. I'm sure that as miniaturization continues repairs, even by talented amateurs, will become impossible.
It's your digitizer. It's available online. Just make sure you get the right one for your country. TMO-US uses a different one than everywhere else, I believe. Also, watch the video linked above. The digitizer removal I hear is somewhat tricky. Good luck!
Hi there and hello from Croatia!well,i must say changing digitizer on hd2 aint easy.lcd is glued with some special glue type and after you glue them up u need to glue digitizer for housing, for that im using ebay double sided iphone 3m tape but it is not strong enough.as for the hardware inside u ned to be 100% concentrated on this cuz flat for keypad is 30$...digitizer around 50$...chinese resellers with good quality.good luck!
