jam lcd replacement - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Anyone replaced their own Jam lcd/touchscreen? I'm thinking of getting a replacement screen off ebay for $100. It doesn't look all that difficult, but I want to make sure it's not harder than it seems to do a self-replacement.

Hi nvrnuff,
Opps, I didn't notice there is a replacment screen and already order a Eten M600. Can you please reply back yr end result if you will buy the replacement screen.

Hey nvrnuff,
Are U breaking the LCD (the display) or the DIGITIZER GLASSTOP(the touchscreen sensor) like me. I just found out they are 2 seperate things from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=51395&highlight=lcd after research

Answering my own question:
Jack, it doesn't matter with the Jam. They're all one assembly. Even PPCtechs can't replace only one or the other on this device; they always replace the whole assembly, LCD and touchscreen both. But I know what you mean, and yes it is possible to have a working LCD and broken touch or vice versa.
Second, I recently replaced my Jam housing and found that the LCD/touchscreen assembly is remarkably easy to replace IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH DISASSEMBLING THE JAM. For more information on that, read the "Jam housing" thread. I posted there about that whole process on page 3.

cracked screen - what do I need?

Just cracked my screen today. I went searching on Ebay and saw LCD screens and a digitizer. What parts do I need? either or both?
Phone still works, just can't read anything on the screen. It lights up but its all messed up.
I'm in the US, anyone have a phone for parts?
If you think that you can do it yourself, you will have to order a new LCD component and - just to be on the save side - a digitizer as well. Your best source might be eBay. Other than that, the Hermes really dropped in price, so, if you want to stick with a Hermes, try to get you a new one on eBay and keep your broken one for parts.
NO!!!!!!! You just need the LCD. Make sure it has the digitizer ALREADY on it. Save some $$ and some stuffing around with a possible failure.
In Oz I can get 1 for less than $100. You should be able to get them cheaper depending where you are in the world.
When you get the LCD/digitizer combo then use the Hermes HTC Service manual to pull apart your Hermes and put back together. You'll also need a size 6 torque key, a smll flatblade screwdriver and a small philips head screwdriver.
Take the steps 1 at a time and if you don't understand something then reread until you do.
When you put back together watch out for the camera focus and the battery access latch. If you don't line up the camera focus switch with the swich on the back cover you will have problems and if you put the battery latch on the wrong way you're not gonna be able to get the battery cover off easily.
Cheers...
Thanks for the advice. I'mgoing to try to do this myself and save a few bucks. I checked local repair shops and they want $120 to repair.
I haven't seen any LCD's that mention they have the digitizer with it. Is there a way to tell? Otherwise, I'll see what I can find.

LOL,
So, he needs the digitizer!
Yes Junner2003, but you DON'T buy it separately... That is a MAJOR pain in the neck. Its almost impossible to attach properly.
The LCD should come with the digitizer attached. Ask the seller if it is. If they say "no" then go elsewhere. There's no point in saving a few bucks on an LCD that may not be made to work properly.
Thanks for that tip. I found one with the digitizer so I'm crossing my fingers.

Replacement Screen overlay?

I got my htc off ebay and the screen is a little scratched, it doesnt effect use at all but i was wandering if it were possible to replace just the front plastic layer and not the whole screen?

Yes it´s possible
But first to know what HTC you have?
This section called Universal does not means all HTC devices, it´s a model!!
Orange SPV M5000 / HTC Universal.
Are we talking about screen protector? Then just buy another one and apply.
If we are talking about digitizer, it's a part of the screen that is responsible for the touch function. That part is better replaced by an experienced technician, and I take it, you are not an experienced technician.
The alternative is to replace the entire LCD unit.
It looks like it's integral to the unit but is definitely plasticcy and not glass-like like i'd expect the front of an LCD to be, guess it must be the digitiser. Replacing any part of it shouldnt be a problem i've soldered and hacked smaller devices before, guess it'd just be getting hold of the part cheaply that'd be the problem.

Not a problem to buy a digitizer at all, they are just a few bucks on eBay. Just make sure you know what is involved before you do. Good luck.
Found some on ebay, will read up on the procedure before I take the plunge, thanks for the tips

You had better read the following dialogue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3906555
I ended up having to obtain a whole new screen+digitizer. Soldering is not the issue - it's the way you do it! Be warned.
I've put the dialogue together on the Wiki here

HTC Touch HD/Blackstone digitizer

Hi,
I'm new to this site, if I wrote something wrong, please have a mercy .
Ok, my thing is that I have HTC Blackstone and I broke its frontal cover (known as digitizer too ). I ordered this part prom ebay, and today I got it. Nice, new, tools included. But...then I started to dismember the phone, and at the end I discovered that its display is glued or something like that to frontal cover. The question is: How can I change this digitizer? Because with LCD everything is fine, I need to change just this digitizer.
Hope to hear some tips.
Thank you all in advance .
Checked the service manual in the wiki?
I tried, but only thing that I found was some kind of service manual for dismembering the phone up to LCD, but there isn't any info on how to change LCD (and I think that changing digitizer could be similar to changing LCD). I don't believe that HTC didn't include such an option to change LCD or digitizer, especially if digitizer can be bought separately.
Maybe this can help then.
http://vimeo.com/6892707
I've not watched it all the way through but hopefully it might help.
big thanks, but this guy in video is stuck in the same situation as me . I'll try to contact my local HTC service center, maybe they'll have some solution .
Sorry then don't know. Good luck.

I very much doubt they'll give you any info on taking the HD apart, they'll surely want you to send it in for repair!?
That said I would love to have a go at replacing the entire outer casing as mine is looking tatty now. Can you send me a link to the ebay seller that you got your parts from and maybe I'll have a go at it myself
EDIT: Perhaps it would be better to get a screen and ditigitzer as one unit? LCD & Digitizer
EDIT: Have you managed to get the screen and digitzer out of the front part of the case, I guess it's then easier to split the screen and digitizer. See this ebay item for pics, perhaps it makes a bit more sense when you look at it Full Housing Kit

[Q] Digitizer replacement questions

Hi All,
Broke my glass + digitizer, but lcd ok. Got a replacement and managed to separate the original lcd, what I'd like to know is do I really need to glue the lcd to the new digitizer? I've put it back together just loose for the time being and seems to look and work fine. Any risks to just glueing the digitizer/screen to the frame and leaving the lcd loose inside?
Also, I still have glue gunk on the lcd screen, I've ordered some "151 sticker remover" to get rid of it, but it occurred to me it might damage it. Anyone know if it would be ok? If not anything else recommended, maybe something I could make at home?
Thanks!

Thanks, on closer inspection I htink my colours are a little washed out without the glue, so am just going to go ahead and do it.
I got my digitizer off ebay, interestingly I see the ones on ebay in India are twice as expensive though, I would have thought they'd be cheaper. I'd recommend just getting a digitizer and lcd in one though. Like this one:
ebayDOTin/itm/For-LG-E960-Google-Nexus-4-E960-LCD-Display-Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Black-/121465367279?pt=IN_Mobile_Accessories&hash=item1c47e66aef
Costs twice as much, but it's much easier to install; you don't need to buy as many tools, UV glue and gunk remover. Plus there's a high chance of breaking the lcd when separating it from your broken screen, so you could well end up having to buy both anyway.
I read something about the replacement lcds being lower quality though, I don't know how noticeable that would be, but if you pay with paypal you'd probably be able to get your money back.

The link is dead. But i guess the product refers to complete front panel of phone. I did same thing. The panels are China made. The quality is no where close to original. I suggest you to not buy it online. You should go to mobile repair store and ask them to do it. The reason is the panels are faulty and if so then they will quickly replace it. I did couple of time after which got a better one.

Broken screen

Unfortunately my screen broke, the LCD is working fine, and recognizes touches.
Is it possible to change only the glass and digitizer? Eg
I'm afraid of LCD panels from eBay. The service said that warranty is void at all events (even if they repair it).
I'm currently in the same situation. Any update on your phone's screen?
A local repair shop can't fix it unless I buy a panel myself and let them fix it for me. I want to know what I need if the glass is broken, but touches and LCD are fine: just glass or a complete screen replacement, like this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Rau...Panel-Replacement-for-Xiaomi/32835465822.html .
I will order a complete LCD panel with frame and try to replace myself. But I don't know if they are the same quality as original.

Let us know when you do! Please also specify which replacement you bought. It's a good idea to document these things, because in the coming years many more people will break their screens, unfortunately, but we can help them finding out what screens are worth buying.
I'm especially interested in touch performance and LCD similarity to the original. If you could pay attention to those properties and comment on them when you know, that would be really helpful.
Never try replacing one yourself, no matter how tempting and easy it looks on youtube videos, without proper gears and experience, you will end up damaging the whole panel. I know because I tried and failed myself and ended up buying the whole front panel with the LCD.
It will be much cheaper to buy it off ebay and let a experienced guy do it.
Did you tried with LCD+frame kit? It looks much easier that way. What happened exactly?

I was trying the glass with digitizer which was pretty much cheap, which needs to be removed with proper gears and lot of patience with a heat gun(I have seen local shop guys doing it without them with ease), It was an old samsung s3 which I kept to experiment on, ended up buying the whole front assembly which I did installed successfully(made me feel a lot better). That looks easy and there is less of chance of any breaking, unless you are very careful in removing all the tiniest sensors and wire and put them accordingly, but then you have to carefully pick the whole assembly there are plenty of low quality ones around, where you might get one that gives issues. for instance on Samsung s3 it was an original amoled display. but I got one that was an LCD panel display and there were issues where brightness sensor didn't worked at all.
Your best bet would be an original LCD+frame kit, I don't know if you really can get one off ebay.
So my three advices.
1. try to get only the glass with digitizer off ebay(If your Display works), then let a local expert change it. much cheaper and let you avoid getting a low quality LCD panel.
2. If it's your first time, I would suggest doing it on a cheaper phone to test your skills, I wouldn't recommend doing it for first timers who have no experience of doing it. there is high possibility that you might break a sensor or a wire.
3. if you want to go ahead with a whole new kit from ebay, make sure you check it without removing any sticker, and connect that display with the motherboard and see if the display is really good and make sure you check the brightness and touch. only if you are satisfied then go ahead, or return the product.
Thank you for the advices!
I couldn't find anybody, who can replace only the glass and digitizer.

I saw MiA1 LCD panel, Touchscreen and digitizer which is around $39-$46 on ebay, while I couldn't find just the glass with Digitizer. I think the best bet right now would be with the full kit with LCD. as they aren't selling without the LCD at the moment.
Although I would suggest you keep the original LCD panel with broken glass,(don't try to remove it yet, let the glue wear off itself until then) in case they do start to sell in future the glass with digitizer only. There could be a next time(who knows? or you can just sell that to someone), where you will at least have an original LCD, these things break very easily. be sure to keep them safe, and if you feel confident enough, you can try it yourself, just be careful with the glue, and the pins. go gentle, it's a surgery. best of luck!

I love advices like that.U r smart.
I've also cracked my screen.... happened yesterday when I accidentally dropped it on concrete. Touch is working fine, only glass is broken.
So would be buying only the digitizer like this one: goo.gl/ZDPoFd do its job if I let it do at the local repair shop or buy the whole LCD as mentioned above?

You're going to need to ask your local repair shop. Some shops will be able to replace the digitzers, others only do the full LCD assembly. Again others will not even accept repairs where you bring in the parts, they'll source the parts themselves.

I've contacted a local repair shop and said they couldn't do only the digitizer, but they can do the whole LCD repair which will cost me 25 euro. Now I have to find the right one..... as you have so much variant on Ebay and Alie. U have a suggestion on which one to choose?
My MI A1 display is craked .but display is working and phone functions are working .just I ask you if I using the craked display for long time is it problem come.phone sold 3 days ago so I cannot want to repair the lcd. .Plz advice
I bought this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ori...izer-Display-For-Xiaomi-MiA1/32831902856.html
I let a local phone repair shop do the repair for me. They did a great job. The screen itself is also great. I think it could be an original, as I can't tell any difference. The colours seem the same, it measures up to 10 simultaneous touches (like the original), the performance feels identical. I recommend this screen! I've also left a review with pictures on Ali Express, but it's still being processed.
I ordered a white screen for my black Mi A1, so now I have a stormtrooper! (or panda, whatever you want...)
Screen plus repair in total about €60, well worth it IMO. It's quite a fraction of the original purchase price, but hey, I shouldn't have dropped the phone after a month. I've also ordered a plain black back cover to help me better grip the device.

You are lucky then, because it's common for Xiaomi that the buttons won't lite when replacing screen.

I didn't know that! It wouldn't have been bad, because I don't like the button backlight at all: it's on for too short, it's too bright, it's not like I can't find the buttons and it's not like I don't know what functions the buttons have... I hope we can turn it down or off in the stock ROM in the future!
