VZW warranty void? Lost my screw. - Mogul, XV6800 General

Just wanted to check before I called Verizon. Anyone have their warranty "VOID" screw come out?
I have a xv6800 and must have dropped it a few too many times as the screw with the "VOID" paint on the screwhead came loose. I left it in the phone but every time I pulled the battery cover the screw would fall out. One more drop and the tiny screw went flying and is lost.
I'm thinking since the phone works I could take it in and have them verify it before something happens on the next drop. I have a flashed DCD rom which I could go back to stock if need be. I just want to avoid having no warranty from a screw that fell out.
I'm getting that bright white area in the lower left screen again and want to have them swap it out without saying my lost screw was the problem.

Honesty is the best policy. Mention the screw, but don't state it as the reason for swapping units. If only one screw is undone, there is no way you could have accessed your chassis.
The reason I urge you to be honest, is this problem is probably already known. I had one client came in with his screws popping out and TELUS replaced his unit for exactly -that- reason.

Loose hinge. Fixable?

I've only owned my exec a couple weeks and already I notice the pivot hinge loosening.
Has anyone tightened theirs? If so, any tips?
Get in touch with HTC and see if its warrantied.
Likely just needs something tightening.
Altho I work in a customer service department for a laptop repair workshop and they would likely accuse you of having bent it the wrong way and class it as "Accidental Damage".
In which case you'd be getting a bill for a hinge (£12) and labour (£130).
You may find HTC are a little nicer than my lot tho. Hehe.

I don't have a loose hinge yet, but I'm sure we will all be at that point eventually. I noticed two small screws on the inside of the hinge (underneath the screen part) when you twist the screen half way around. I wonder if they do anything useful
I've noticed those screws as well. There's also a single screw on the base side. The base metal piece is the wiggly part on the non-screw side (right).
I'll wait another day or so to see if anyone has tried this yet. If I don't get a response, I'll hold my breath and give it a go.
If it works and I end up tightening my unit - great.
If not, then I've just made a very expensive mistake.
Either way, I'll update my post here with the results..
I can't be the only person with an exec/universal that has a loose lid. Pls excuse the pun.

HTC warranty the product unless a third party warranty provider is nominated - which is very unusual in the first year tbh.
Normally you return to the point of sale and they will either repair it or replace it themselves and bill HTC or send it back to the manufacturer.
In this case the product is less than 28 days old? So in the UK you would be covered by the Sales of Goods Act 1979 and entitled to a repair or if you so choose an exchange. This would probably also be the case in some form or other in the USA, but I suspect since this was a product originally intended for the UK market (and if the seller was British) you would be bound by this law.
Since you're in the US you will likely have no warranty with the retailer ie. o2 since large companies often operate warranty services within the borders of the nation it was originally purchased in and never beyond.
So you're best bet is to contact HTC - whom are an international company - and they will assess the claim and arrange shipping to and from either a) an authorized local repair agent or b) back to the main repair and warranty facility in whichever country that is.
As far as I am aware you should definately either contact the point of sale if a large company and enquire as to the repair service route or just skip them compeletely and go for the manuafcturer.

There doesn't appear to be one for the USA.
I'm sure there is but its likely going to be a case of shipping it back to Dubai or wherever anwyay so ping them some mail and see what they say.
Either way you must act quickly and keep a record of all correspondence.
In the UK we call consumer rights 'statutary rights' and the electronics world often goes far far beyond these in terms of warranty repair/s.
The only caveats are often companies assume that since you arent asking for or invoking your rights on a certain issue that they don't need to inform you of them.
YES, I have opened mine up & can give some insight. firstly it's all very robust and safe to open the hinge on the base side (have not opened screen side). it'a ALL metal - screw, plate u can see, & chassis screw goes into - so little/no danger of loosening things by unscrewing.
u will 1st find that the single screw on the base side may be half a turn loose. tightening it with a jewelers screwdriver will make a hug defferenc4e. possibly same benefit screen side but there r more screws there so I doubt it.
if u undo screw, base pops out as it hooked at one end, and thus only held by this 1 screw. u will find a nice, strong, ropey cable linking 2 halves - NOT a ribbon that breaks the moment u open this up - so safe again.
next, u can bend the plate slightly so that it sits lower in the middle. this makes a huge difference to screen looseness or play when in position. it's like tensioning a bow.
so, all very easy and safe FOR BASE SIDE. screen side looks way more delicate & hopefully someone will update this thread with similar info.
I found that when I dropped mine a few times, the screw came loose. a bit worrying cos it means a thread miust have skipped. but now I know that if the screw ever strips I can get it re-tapped by a jeweler and a new screw put in. there's enough chassis 4 this I think. please let us know how it goes.

Unfortunately it's now past closing time at HTCEUROPE, so I'll have to try and call them tomorrow.
I tried to take the pda apart and concur with Craigie regarding its simplicity. The wiggle in my Exec comes from the pivot and not the base plate with the single screw. I tried to remove the lid side plate by unscrewing the 4 screws that hold it, but it cannot be removed w/o spreading the plastic housing which holds the LCD. Scary.
There are 2 additional screws which bind the plastic housing (can be seen w/o taking anything apart). There are also 2 rubber inserts at the tip (tried, but can't pull out). So, my theory is that by removing the 6 lid screws and these rubber inserts, I'll be able to separate the plastic halves and remove the metal plate. Again...SCARY.
I'm hoping there's a screw which tightens the pivot. From what's visible it is made up from a press fit washer and a bent spring washer around a metal shaft. If there is a screw, it's on the side I can't get to. If there isn't a screw, then it's got to be another press fit washer used to hold the assembly together. I can use pliers to squeeze the opposite washers toghether if I can get to them.
If I have to, I'll send it to HTC. But I'd rather try and fix it myself to save the time lost and expense. Granted I should stay away from coffee or any other caffinated products before I do.
Just seen this posting by "stot" selling a replacement screen for the Universal, he gives a link showing instructions for stripping down the Universal, any help with tightening the hinge?

When I did open up the screen there is no inherant way of adjusting the tension of the spring. It is basically a rivet with a curved washer that gets squashed and provides the tension.
Only thing I could suggest would be to squash the rivet section on 2 sides with a pair of pliars, or vice grips may be better so that you can set the pressure, i.e. close the vice crips and adjust them so that they are snug on the edge of the rivet, open them, adjust them closed evvver so slightly and then close them on the rivet. This will basically put more tension on the washers.
Its from the school of smack it til it works but its all I can think of.
Ill put some more pictures up of what I mean on that link shortly.

I think it was the swivel action some were interested in any suggestions to tightening that mechanism? Photo's would be good too, or is that one a case of squash it with pliers too?

I've gotten as far as spliting the lid from the main section, but I was afraid to split the lid in half in order to get at the metal plate. No more.

Hey,
It's easy tightening the hinge! Mine was lose, and when I say lose I mean basically spinning 360 degrees! So what did I have to lose... nothing. I took my Exec apart.
When you rotate your screen.. to the right of the light sensor and 'Xda Exec' text there is a grey metal panel, with a small standard 'phillips' screw in there. Undo this one screw, and the metal plate will lift of. In there you will find a thick cable that connects the screen and the hardware keyboard. Simply twist the wire up a bit (you'll understand what I mean) and then put the panel back on, screw it up, and the screen will be tight as it was new..
I have started to notice that the hinge is starting to get lose again - wait there and I shall do the above proceedure again (undo the metal plate, unwrap the cable, wrap it back up and screw up) - oh look it's tight as brand new.
Don't worry about loosing anything whilst un-screwing you exec, NOTHING pops out!

That's a brilliant post Pete. When my hinge comes loose I will not have any fear about following your instructions. Luckily, the missus is an optometrist, so she has plenty of tiny screwdrivers, etc. Maybe I can get her to do it, that way if she breaks it, it's not my fault... :wink:

I read the post and I thought someone said they have a link on where to buy a replacement screen for the HTC Universal. Can someone help me... I drop the device and the screen cracked Lcd.

Warranty service for Cingular (AT&T) 8525

I have the cingular 8525 and having lots of issues I want to send it in for warranty but I just noticed I have the VOID sticker showing on the inside. I never had water spill on it could it be related to moisture its in my pocket most of the time?
Anyway know how to get it replaced under warranty with VOID showing its never been wet, maybe dropped on carpet few times but no damage.
void shows on mine too.. they arent concerned with that sticker they are looking for the one under the sim..
VOID showing is normal. It's on mine as well as the refurbished which they sent.
it has to show void..if it gets wet it changes color,plus under the void sticker there is a screw.so they know you didn't open the inside to play when you re bored.haha
Actually, the VOID sticker is important. It covers a screw hole. If you open the device, you will rip that sticker. It detects "intrusion".
The one under the SIM (as stated above) is the moisture detector. Both important, but different functions.

As others have said - that sticker is meant to say void. It is not the thw water detector one. The one that you see is the one that breaks up into small pieces if you remove it to take out the screw that lies underneath. So if you are seeking a warranty repair then you want to have that sticker in place and unbroken with the word void showing.

perfect thank you all, AT&T is being a pain and not wanting to replace my phone even though the keyboard keys are sticky etc. I hardly use it but the phone was refub the one I got from then in 45 days just DIED and wouldn't work properly they sent me a refub one and it was a problem from day one but I was traveling so I needed a phone for work.
Oh well hope I can get someon else this time that can help me.
How would one go about obtaining a replacement void sticker? I had a horrible screen protector incident with a nushield shield where something got trapped between it and the screen, rendering the touch screen unusable. The normal methods to remove the screen protector failed, so I started to disassemble. I only got the void screw removed, no others.. as it seems they used different torx screw sizes and the T6 I bought for working on cell phones only fit a couple. Nothing was ever actually apart, but of course the sticker is punctured. I don't want to be screwed if something ever goes wrong with the phone. Hell I don't even use my AT&T Tilt anymore, it's slower than any phone I currently own (it's obviously the only one with WinMo Pro).
I'd like to just get a new void sticker, get rid of the phone, and move on with my life.

Bell - Exchanging a washed Vogue?

Turns out I decided to call Bell and tell them about all of the legitimate problems I'd been having with the phone a while back, at which time they decided to exchange it. Unfortunately, I didn't take the exchange at that point in time as I wanted to try and get my data backed up first. That was dumb! Not too long afterwards I put my phone through the wash machine and the LCD flaked out a couple of days later when it appeared to have completely dried out (put it a few inches above an oil heat register for 2 days). In any event, the main white sticker is still white and didn't turn pink or blue.
Having said all of that, do you folks think I should pull out a heat gun and a razor to try and check the other stickers without damaging the VOID sticker, or do you think I should just go ahead with the exchange?
Not that I would try... but I've heard of people soaking the return packing labels and boxes in water to try and make it look like the (water) damage was caused by the shipping company. Sounds somewhat sleezy to me, but I really, really can't afford to eat a $400 replacement bill right now .
Regardless, any insight or help would be kindly appreciated!

Does anyone at least know Bell's policy on charging the customer or contacting them if there is water damage? IE: What's the worst case scenario?
THe stickers Are brittle also. They will break if you try to remove them. IF your stickers are fine then they should do warrenty for your other issues.
I wouldn't bother opening it.
I don't know how much Bell charges for a swap unit but you are just better off taking the risk as long as you are prepared to be charged.
There are a bunch of other litmus stickers inside the phone which most likely have been contacted.
I worked at a cell phone dealership (telus) for a couple of years so this situation is quite common.

vogue housing dilemma

hello guys,
i've decided that my bell vogue most likely needs to be warrantied (it expires in october), as the front faceplate (top part) of my htc touch came loose. as a result, the power button doesn't always work unless i press in and hold the top part of the faceplate then press the power button as there's pressure. i believe the power button spring functions at 100% when it's secured by the front and rear faceplate pressing inwards?! i'm not too sure why it came loose or what happened, some people have pm'd me saying possibly from constantly always having it on vibration?! the phone's always been in an monaco metal case and hasn't been dropped as i'm meticulous. now in order to tighten the frontal housing, the top 2 screws need to be tightened. 1 screw is easily accessible however, the other is covered with a void sticker as i'm told to prevent people from tampering with the phone. so i guess the only option is to warranty it as any attempts on my own will ruin the sticker. everything works 110% on the phone, no cracks on lcd, black lines, ink etc etc. just that the top Left corner of the front faceplate is protruding out
my concern is that i've read some mixed horror stories of how when phones get sent in to be warrantied, the owner ends up with a $200 bill (bell charges this for the htc touch refurbished replacement that they send you). course, it's possible that these people had water damage/crack screens from drops and tried to claim manufacturer defect. i dunno
just wondering if anyone experienced any similar situations and would like to share. debating whether it's worth it or not cause if i'm outta my beloved smartphone for 3-4 weeks and end up tabulating a significant bill cause they say it's 'my fault' in the end, it's gonna stink. my other course of option is to simply take off void sticker and work my t5 screw driver and see what's up and if something broke, order a $40-50 replacement housing on ebay.

My glossy-white Verizon vogue developed a crack in the casing a few months in, so I replaced it with a matte-finish (Sprint-style) black housing that I ordered brand-new from Hong Kong. I voided the warranty in switching the housing, but it was reasonably easy, completed in one afternoon, and I never developed another problem I couldn't fix myself. So, my 2 cents - make your phone your own, and take a peek inside, warranty be damned.
I agree with brsev! Just make sure you buy a housing for a P3050 not a P3450 like I did.

Please help me out water damage?

So I've had my S5 for over 2 months. I'm always very careful with my stuff. I had the original cover on the phone and once a week I would run it under cold water to wash off any grime or dirt. Everything would be fine.
Now I got the wireless charging cover and I did the same routine. I made 1000% sure it was sealed completely. Now I start to experience slow down and freezing. So much so I have to remove the battery to restart. So I take off the cover and I see water on the battery. Not a lot but this is supposed to be wster resistant. I also notice some water where the cover snaps on to the phone. I dry it all off..I also called Verizon who said I'd have to go to the store to check for water damage which I say to myself Huh? But it's water resistant. Anyways I go to the store and they see nothing wrong with it. They said I can get a like new replacement but I feel that unfair since I spent my money and its not even 3 months old.
I noticed when I got home that by the speaker win the wireless cover it's not flush against he phone. The snaps are all in place but still there's a considerable gap between the cover and phone. Then I took the cover off and put the regular cover back on and there was no gap. It's flush against. Now is it possible hbis is a defect?
And should I accept the replacement device? Right now he phone is Ok but I'm worried no one wants a damaged phone.
Also my boot screen says custom even though I haven't rooted. I even used a root checker to make sure. Only thing I did was turn off some apps and install nova.
Weird? Advice?

Well, first of all. The extended battery and cover for it were said a lonnnng time ago to not be water tight. So that's probably part of your problem.
Secondly, I would recommend using Computer screen cleaning wipes, or a microfiber cloth and a little bit of windex or other non-harmful glass cleaner to clean it instead of running cold water over it..
The more you can control what is cleaning it, the better off you are. A little more than A LOT.

I'm running the stock battery and the wireless cover. I've read a lot of places it keeps the wireless seal. In fact the Samsung site States the same.

My apologies, it is still early.
I have still read on these forums that despite the claim by Samsung that it will hold the seal, users were saying it doesn't. Perhaps do a search for it and see what they say?

if you are using an official samsung accessory, you can send it back to samsung for repair. they will replace damaged parts with new ones. or you can go to verizon and get the like new one. either way, i wouldn't hold on to it if it has water damage and is acting flakey. it will never be right and by the time you get fed up with it you are out of warranty. replace it. and really, if verizon gives you a phone that is in as good a shape as the one you have, and works perfectly, who cares if someone else tried it and didn't like it and returned it.

I spoke to Samsung and they basically said I got a defective cover which honestly is BS. They said they can repair the phone but I wouldn't have access to a replacement and they don't provide replacements. Honestly I've always liked Samsung but now I'm thinking should I just take the replacement, sell it and get the LG G3 or something.

At least samsung is willing to repair the phone. They could have just said it was your fault for not installing the cover correctly. I sent them a 16gb S3 a while back that I bricked. They fixed it and sent it back to me as a 32gb model. Did right by me. You aren't going to be any worse for taking the replacement verizon will give you. It will still have the same warranty plus it has the benefit of additional QA testing from factory.
