Idea: Send non-MMS files in MMS (Mortscript? Legal?) - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I have an idea that may be useful, but I thought I would ask everyones opinion.
Most network carriers charge a set rate for GPRS connections, to send emails and other files, and another set rate for MMS.
For instance, if I sent a file via MMS on my carrier, it would be about 50 cents. If I send it via an email it would be a few dollars. Obviously, the more I send via MMS, the better for my wallet. Unfortunately, you can only send a certain type of file via MMS (picture, audio, video)
It has long been possible to embed .rar files in .jpg files. All you need to do is RAR whatever file you want to hide, and then use the command line to embed it in the JPG file. The command is something like:
Copy /b OriginalImage.Jpg + Filetohide.txt.rar ImageWithHiddenFiles.jpg
So, Windows Mobile can run both Pocket RAR and PocketCMD. I have been testing it and as yet can't manage to get it to work quite correctly, but I believe it is possible (I can create the new image with no rar inside, and can also create a JPG with the rar hidden inside but no image loads).
So, first questions, does anyone thing this is legal considering you would still technically be sending a JPG? I wouldn't want to do any fraudulent or illegal as XDA Developers is a safe site. If it is illegal I won't speak anymore of it.
If people think it is ok, does anyone think it is possible to streamline the process using mortscript?
PS I checked Google and the XDA Search, couldn't find any other related topics, so sorry if this has been discussed before.

Interesting idea. It wouldn't be "illegal" (against the law), but it would be most likely against your carrier's terms of service. Of course, those only apply if they catch you .

advanced SMS program?

the problem:
i receive daily around 50 sms's (very soon will be twice more), with just a line in a subject -so basically i need something to export the content from those XX sms's - into a singe txt file, or maybe a excel sheet (even better), not the copy/forward/paste way i do - takes some time :/
.. and the question is: did anyone saw/used something like that? cause the most programs i checked are for backup, and save all the data (tel, date...etc.) in separate files, biut i only need the contents of all sms's saved together into a single file.
prehaps i might need some sms-parser, but didnt saw a product like that.
..so, anyone can help or i'll have to do that copy/paste for for the rest of my life ?
thanks in advance.
why don't you try this --> http://zedsoft.net/
i'm using it too

How to transfer SMS

Hi,
I have a T650i and I would like to transfer my SMS from that phone to my Xperia X1.
I've seen many threads explaining how to transfer contacts from older SE-phones, but nothing about SMS. Can it be done? I used to do use MyPhoneExplorer, but since it doesn't support WM, it's not an option anymore.
Thanks
save them to your SIM if possible!?
i remmeber older phones saving SMS on the simcard only. not sure if a winmo phone can use these
Thanks, but the problem is that I have around 900 SMS and the sim only accepts 30.
Is there any other way to do it through the PC?
900sms? i bet 5$ that u dont even need half of them oO
u should to an T650i forum and ask there. once u manage to squeeze te SMS into outlook somehow, u can probably just sync them

I write approx. 900 SMS each month and the same amount I get back. But therefore I have hardly any calls. Good for me that I've got a SMS-flatrate
According the problem:
In which file format does myphoneexplorer save the transferred SMS? It has to be possible to convert these to a usable format. Maybe it would be enough to have all the SMS as a text-file on your X1 so you can read through if needed?
I have problems with the X1 everytime I have that much SMS stored (messaging software does not open, it does not respond to key presses and so on)
MyPhoneExplorer saves the SMS archive in many formats: txt, csv, xml, html, right click and export.
I used MyPhoneExplorer to backup sms's on my K800i, i have every single sms i ever received in the K800's lifetime (2 years).
And while in this subject, i'll ask the following question:
Is there in WinMo a way to backup sms like i already do with with K800 and MyPhoneExplorer? a way to backup the sms's and save them to the computer in some readable format?
Since MyPhoneExplorer saves the SMS archive in txt, csv, xml, html, is there any way of transfering them (as sms, NOT as a text file) to the same sms inbox on the X1?
Try SMSimport. It's a freeware that imports and exports in XML. It's a simple exe that you run directly on the phone.
http://wince.nasenbaeren.net/smsimport/
You may have to edit the names of the folders in the XML to make it compatible with your X1.
You can just make an export file from it first to see the XML import structure.
Hi. I'm new to this community and I'm very impressed. Congrats
I've tried once to import SMS via SMSImport, but it always said 'Invalid XML' or sth. like that although I rearranged the order in the XML as SMSImport seemed to want it.
Has anybody solved this issue?
THX
I use OEExport. It exports to Outlook Express with the folders intact (Inbox, Deleted, Sent etc). It has an option to export to xml too, IIRC.
Question
My question, is why on earth would anyone need to keep all those SMS?
I mean, unless your girlfriend doesn't tell you she loves you enough and you need to keep the texts, or if youre keeping them for evidence (for some reason) or maybe if you have a friend like I do who gets sent joke SMSs and decides to forward 700 of them to you when he's on flatrate weekend SMS just to piss you off because your phone becomes unusable for pretty much the entire weekend.
Please enlighten me.
Would it help if I tell you that some people like to keep records of all their SMS in/out.
I had a girlfriend a few years ago that wrote down every single SMS in a notebook. No, I'm not kidding. She wasn't that much into computers obviously.

Nope, it seems it's still beyond all comprehension of mine. Do you guys also record all voice conversations you make?
I mean, keeping your text messages is hardly like keeping a box of love letters or something now is it?
I'm as much as cyborg as the next guy, I am so electronically inclined that the gadgets I carry and use will probably fuse to me one day anyway, BUT i just don't find anything anyone has to say to me by text _that_ interesting or _that_ important
I'm not taking a swing at you guys or anything, I just really would like to understand, I'm a happier person when i understand things.
Like, ok, I keep the odd text message about things people have said to me, because theyre just downright fantastic for my street cred (if you know what I mean) but that's simply because some of it is just so good, nobody would believe me if i just told them myself, even if i quoted it word for word.
I'm with you. I usually don't need to think twice about throwing away messages when doing a hard reset. Although, as you say, there are some that need to be kept safe forever.
But this is not what the topic's about.
O.k. guys, I'm convinced now. I won't spend any minute anymore in thinking about how to transfer my SMS back. 99% of all that stuff I would rather likely never need again in the future and if I really need it, it is still on my PC.
Nevertheless - thank you!
Greetz
Why backup sms ?
Some of my SMS contain info I need, I am just too lazy to save it when I get it - like an address, or rocket launch code just plain I like to have my SMS conversations available to refresh my memory in case I need it.
From time to time I want to do upgrade or other destructive thing and I don't want to loose my messages. I would like to keep a copy of all my SMS in outlook 2007 but my cheapskate uprising and empty wallet steer me out of paid software, I am going to try programs mentioned in previous posts but if someone knows about some great synchronization or transfer or WhateverYouCallIt software please keep us informed about it.
Thank you all for great site.
i think MOBILedit works for you.
google it for the main website.
hope it helped

Small MMS

Hi,
I've been trying to send pictures but the phone shrinks and compresses them to the point of stupidity. Is there a setting I haven't discovered yet that will change this.
Cheers!

Hello This Problem is Solved on the HTC Windows Mobile Phones...
Can this be somehow moved into the Android to fix the problem..
Please Look at the link. It has the cab files and info required to fix the problem..

Does any one have any thoughts on this? The MMS is pretty much useless we can sort this. Is there a .conf file that I can edit?
What's the use of sending full size images with a res of 2048x1536 to a phone where the display at the very best is 480x320?

So put ur memory card into ur computer, or mount it and take it off
There is obviously a reason to anything, and as someone said, it should be optional to send "as is" or sized down. But transfering big (image) files was never the design goal behind MMS. To declare MMS as "pretty much useless" if you're not allowed to send huge images (some carriers even limit MMS size to 32 kB!) is overreacting IMO. To me, it makes sense to scale down the image to std phone display size. If I want to transfer things untouched, there's always email...

Long story short... it seems that when people on here don't have an answer to the question, they like to dump in their .02.
He wasn't asking for what you like (opinions).... He was asking if it is configurable.

Thank you Captain Obvious.... If I wanted to send a full size image to my friend whom then wanted to crop it to his or her liking, this does nothing.

...just like I didn't ask for your opinion. - But forgive me for adding mine - I tend to do that, when I see people getting frustrated with things just because of wrong assumptions. Like getting mad because the screw breaks when you try to get it into the hole with a hammer (or in this case why MMS isn't a good idea for file transfer).

nI diissue! I wan't o dnsend MMSs to my G/F who will crop them on her handset. She doesn't have a data plan so POP3/IMAP email isn't gonna cut
As for MMS not being designed for large amounts of data; neither were email or SMS but they evolved to meet the needs of users. Some providers send adverts via MMS so a 100I200KB jpg shouldn't be a problem.
Should it?t. 't mean for this to be a contetious

Welcome to the Internet, we've been waiting for your arrival....
If you are sending something to someone who will use the data on a PC, send it to their e-mail, which they can access on thier PC....

where I live, downloading an image to the phone costs the same no matter if it's part of an MMS or an email attachment. It's the same # of bytes to dl, and without a data plan every byte comes at a price.

Not to get involved in this lovely debate but the OP:
1) Wants to send a picture to his GF's phone.
2) Once on the phone she can then crop to suit.
3) Since she does not have a data plan MMS is about the only easy way to send the photo directly to the phone.
4) Depending on the phone she may or may not be able to get the picture from her computer but for the sake of argument let's assume not.
So we have a reasonable request and reasoning for why the OP wants to send an uncompressed image. Mail does not cut it and given premise 2 a compressed image is not acceptable.
So can we stop trying to find a work around for the moment and simply try and address the OP's problem? I am as guilty as anyone of justifying a limitation on my beloved G1 but in this case it is not going to help. Maybe one of the third party MMS programs? The furst question in my mind is whether it is the phone compressing the image or the carrier? Any way to know for sure?
T-Mobile (USA) imposes a 300k limit on MMS messages (as seen in many other forums here using WM). It's certainly possible that Google forced the messaging app to conform to that limit....or even to a smaller limit so that other carriers with lower thresholds could still use the same Android build for MMS.
I always send MMS to my wife who is overseas, and I prefer MMS since its instant and my wife doesn't check her email frequently. I know I can email her the images then sms her to notify her about the email but thats just not practical.
so please if you don't have an answer, you don't have to say "I don't know" which might hurt your reputation as an expert on everything except useful solutions.
Just skip the thread.
I'm interested as to whether there are any .conf file etcetera to edit.
It seems to be the phone requiring the compression of the image, which doesn't make much sense, as none of my WM devices have forced this requirement upon me.
Anyone care to join me in a game of 'Hunt the config file'
The images I send are literally the size of my thumbnail btw.
Thanks in advance!
Dave
Why not just email the full sized picture to her phone's email address. Most providers have an email address for each phone number on their system. T-mob is [email protected]. Search google for the address. There, a nice simple solution. Was I really the only one that thought of this?
Well the G1 MMS is capped at about 298kb or 300kb and pictures taken on the G1 in max resolution are easily over that but no worry looks like we'll get a 3MB cap with 1.5 or just send to email

Why are SMS messages being logged?

Does anybody know what SmsListener_log.txt in My Device/Temp is? It keeps a log of all text messages even after they are cleared from the deleted items. Can it be disabled?
Heh, I also just found this file and wondered what it was from and why it's there.
Any ideas?
Not on mine. 1.66 stock.
Not on mine either, Stock 1.66.
Hmm, that is weird, I have it too.
Running the Stock USA Tmobile ROM. Definitely seems like it's Sense related since it's written is some type of code/interface.
It doesn't really bother me, though i could see why someone would be upset by it.
I wonder what would happen if someone were to delete the file.....
I have it too, 12.5MBs.
I am running a stock T-Mobile USA rom. I have deleted the file, but it reappears when there are new text messages.
No big deal, but if I delete a message, it would be nice if it were really deleted.
Hehe, I'm wondering what T-Mobile was thinking when they implemented this in their ROM... "Lets just store every SMS in a separate file" ..?
Sounds to me like a conspiration...
cant someone try to write a "lets bomb usa" text, make up some plans and send it to your own phone, then wait a few minutes and see if the feds shows up? lol
I found a way to disable this log:
1. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\SMS\Rules.
2. Delete the following value: {54F38CD4-B778-28BA-6F63-2D942AFCCD7D}.
3. Soft-reset.
Notes:
This GUID represents a CLSID for the messaging rules client in \Windows\SmsListener.dll. I do not know what exactly it does, nor do I know what other messaging rules clients referenced in "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\SMS\Rules" do.
Messaging rules client can move, modify or even delete the incoming message without owner's knowledge. It could be that TMO included this SmsListener.dll to be able to control our phones through SMS. Or may be I'm just paranoid. It would be really nice if someone could reverse engineer this dll to see what it really can do in certain circumstances.
Thanks, deleted entry, will see how it goes.
Not on mine, O2 1.43 Rom

maybe they will knock on our doors here in norway for finding out about their conspiracy and stuff...
bare å løpe over til sverige eller noe nå!! hehe...
I have deleted the registry entry as mentioned above. So far so good-no log of text messages taking up room.
Is there some sort of temp file cleaner for the HD2, similar to CCleaner for a desktop?
Thanks for the help.
Nobody felt the need to ask your service provider why the hell they're logging SMS to a seperate file?
good registry find

Do you think they will really be willing to tell you that even if you're able to reach someone who knows?
Interesting. I don't have this log either.

Google Messenger File Renaming

Google should have better file renaming and management by now
Why does Google Messenger do this!
Ok if someone sends me a MMS I do not want the original file name changed!* This is annoying! Even though I know file name data can be renamed before sending, it does help if someone sends me something and whatever they originally saved it as shows up when I download it. Google desperately needs a file manager like (I hate to say it) Samsung, I do miss that from my Note 4 it was so easy to navigate all data and files on the device, but I digress.
Try it yourself if you have another device, take a picture of something and notice the file name, then send it via MMS to your other device and save the file. Notice the two file names are NOT the same can anybody tell me why this is WTF
