I'm considering switching from t-mobile with a Hermes to Sprint with a Mogul for the faster speeds.
I tried searching and just couldn't find what I was looking for. Does internet sharing work on the mobile? Can sprint tell you are internet sharing and charge you for it?
Thanks for the responses
normaly yes
but you are surrounded by a community of basement nerds with very little cash in their pockets, and we could maybe show some little reg tweaks to set you in the right direction.
or you could flash to a custom rom. I know DCD's roms, for example, already have the key taken out for you. Alltel moguls, in their stock configuration, dont have this key. I dont know about other carriers. but we could figure something out for you, yes.

So I’m running the newest radio with DCD’s ROM from his 3.0 kitchen. Everything is running great. I love the great rev A and the stable radio. I started poking around over at ppcgeeks and I’ve run across a few tips and hacks to help my internet speeds be all they can be. Some, like changing your DNS really helped. Others though, I was a little hesitant to try out until I learned a little bit more about them. Instead of resurrecting some zombie threads, I decided to start a new one with links to the hacks in question. I would really appreciate any factual answers and comments on these. Thanks.

OK, this one is a little old, and the reasoning behind it seems to be on the mark, but I have a mogul and don’t have much memory to play around with. Anyone out there using this hack on there mogul? What do you have it set to? How much faster would this hack increase my speed if I tether using WMWifiRouter? And if you want, care to go into detail why this works?
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=18435
This one I have my doubts about (increasing the TimerWheelSize). Don’t get me wrong, if someone could explain to me why this would work, I’m all for it, but it seemed everyone did this hack with the DNS hack and was attributing the increase of speed to TimerWheelSize. Once more, anyone willing to explain the details of this hack and if it will increase my speed if I tether using WMWifiRouter?
No one??
Well, i guess i'll try these out when i get home. i'll run some speed tests and post the results.
Not sure WIFIRouter is necessary
I was able to use PAN to connect from my laptop to my Mogul, and get connection speeds over 1100 kb/s. I'm not sure what other benefit would be realized with a WIFI router setup...unless I'm misunderstaning what it's being used for.
I recently purchased an Orbit 2 stateside and have been using it on Cingular/ATT for a few months. I struggle with internet connections routinely. Sometimes I can tether (modem for pc), sometimes surf directly, and always sms, but sometimes mms. What I'd like to do is simply find an AT&T ROM to flash to. Then I shouldn't have to continually tweak my connection settings. Has anybody considered or done this? There are a number of ROM's out there, but I haven't seen one specific to the Orbit (Not an AT&T product). Or alternatively, is there an AT&T ROM that will work well with the Orbit 2?
Any advice is highly appreciated.
Russ
No device... No ROM...
The only way to get an AT&T ROM for any device is if AT&T offered that device. Since AT&T is never going to offer this beautiful device (Due to the craptacular iPhone) there is no AT&T ROM for this device. Your best bet is to try different radios like the 1.64.08.21 or get them all and see which one works best for you. I am in MI and the 1.58.25.14 is working great for me. I am going to try that 1.64 radio though. Hope this helps...

Here is a cab that should help.
I'll give it a try
Thanks for the link.... I've tried a few of the .cab's for setting all the media settings with varying degrees of failure. But, I'm game for trying another. Do you recommend I delete all current settings, or just over-write.

i use this cab on my Orbit 2 w/at&t and i never have any connection problems...
No dice
I immediately get the "cannot connect with current connection settings. To change.... blah, blah, blah.
Life is cruel. Any further suggestions. I'm committed to figuring this out in the next few days or ebay'ing it.
Thanks,
Russ
I am using the touch cruise on AT&T and I do not have or have had any connectivity issues at all. I have even had signal 7,000 feet up in the mountains in the middle of now where and received phone calls and access data such as emails ect...
bkeaver,
Great for you gives me hope.
I had things setup once before and didn't do a backup. Accidently hit the O2 Operator Settings and couldn't shut it down fast enough. Been hosed ever since. Still hoping for divine intervention from the guru's here and at other places.
Russ
I think I finally found the magic recipe.

I 'disabled proxy' using this cab setup after using an MMS cab setup. It has the ability to enable/disable proxy. I'm guessing this is different than whether or not the connection is trying to use one.
Should know in a bit if I can actually connect to my work emails again.
Thanks all,
Russ
Suweeeet Georgia Pie!!!
Finally, I'm connected to my work calendar. I wear so many hats at work that I'm only in my office 20% of the time and I really depend on my electronic reminders. They don't work so well when I'm not in my office. Having my electronic leash is a godsend (my daughter has a different opinion of hers

i understand you're good to go now and that's what counts! curious to know, however, if you deleted all of your previous connection settings prior to installing the cab file? i ask because i've been using the cab file to reconfigure all my connection settings over the last 4-5 months without a problem.
Hey guys i'm thinking about getting this phone or the tilt. Main reason is i know WM6 supports 802.1x wifi security modes, which my school uses EAP-PEAP. i dont know whether or not the g1 supports it. Does it? i've been googling for a bit and nothing comes up. Thanks in advance.

All I can see is WPA and WPA2 it doesn't let me configure it further. So I am going to guess no... I don't have any EAP or RADIUS routers to check.
But even if it doesn't have it... it can always come out later cause it is just software.
damn how long will it take........honestly i believe they released a half baked product anyway hopefully they'll do it in time before i get my tilt.

You have to remember this product has only been out a week and a half and already they sent out a firmware update. Most other HTC devices don't get updates unless its from WM 6 to 6.1
Google likes to release things that are just bare minimum and use your feedback to build the rest. You will probably see quite a few firmwares being released. Remember this is all to benefit you. While it may be "half baked" to you right now... in the future it will include all the things you need... but not all those things you hated about other OS's
oh they already have firmware updates out? thats cool. Thanks
PEAP and 802.1x
Developers! I wish that i could contribute but i'm not a programmer. I am however leading a group of students on my campus to use the G1 to it's fullest potential. Everything from Gapp's to media sharing. The issue now is that there is no support/options for PEAP authentication on our campus environment. We have some of the best wifi coverage of most campus's i've been to but it defeats the $200 bill of the G1 if i have to rely on the edge network.
Is there any developers I can test configs for? I'll be a tester and can usually report back quickly.
needed configs for campus:
-WPA
-TKIP
-802.1 and PEAP
-AD username and Pswd
Thanks!

It should work fine if you have root and set up the wifi connection manually with a custom wpa_supplicant.conf, the iptables thread in the development section would be a good start for reading what ya need to do. the default wpa_supplicant.conf on the device has all the settings possible in the comments.
Hi all,
I bumped this topic instead of creating a new one. So i hope this the right way. If i should make a new topic please say so. But this was the closes and only thing i could find about the topic.
Is there any information about getting RADIUS or 802.1x working on the G1. (My campus has this and i like to have internet access on my phone there as i do not have a data abbo).
I read that rooting your phone is a option, but i am not sure what image i should use and how to install it so i hope there is a way to do it on 1.6.
Looking forward to your replays.

I have connection now with a WPA-PEAP network. That one is working but the raduis (8.02.1X) still shows up as web
Hi All,
New reader/lurker and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I'm technical by nature but nothing to do with phones so I think all the nomenclature I see is so foreign to me that I'd love to read a primer or FAQ or anything to help me get up to speed.
My goals (I have a stock XV6800 from VZ for about 6 months now):
I want to tether this to any laptop and make it easy to do so. The only options under Verizon to do so without paying extra I have found are using the modem application (ugh) via this thread or using a DCD I found out via this simple thread on these forums.
I prefer to use the clean Internet Connection Sharing method so it seems I would need to upgrade to some DCD or other...if I only knew what that was and all the steps, considerations, options, pitfalls, etc. in doing so are.
Can someone point me to a guide for a Verizon XV-6800 that might make this possible, or what documents I need to read to get up to speed, where I can find the media, etc?
It feels a bit overwhelming to get bits and pieces of info but not enough to feel comfortable taking the first real step.
/noob
Thanks!
Well, to help others, since no responses...after scouring the 'net for much time, I found these two links which should help, and I'm temtped to use the short version but will read the other one for completeness:

If there is any other Verizon specific guide or something that might help a first timer, please point the way! I dig learning about all this.
There really isn't any carrier specific documentation. Just run the Verizon carrier CAB when you get done with the ROM. Just unlock, radio rom, Windows ROM, the carrier CAB. Then tethering is cake. Run the prog, click on connect and then connect it via USB. Windows XP thinks it is a network card and will do the rest. Works great.
I first off would like to start off by saying I'm in the market of getting a new cell phone, and am really interested in the touches. I'm a college student, so I really can't afford TOO much, but am just wanting some good bang for my buck, and I feel the touches are just what I'm looking for.
However, I really don't have much of a clue which I'm wanting to get. First off, my carrier is GSM (T-mobile). My concern is the number of applications or ROMs that the various touches have. For example, do roms and apps that are meant for the elf work on the Opal? I'm wanting something like the touch, but a bit faster, as I've heard many complain that the elf is a bit slow. Also, is the Opal considered the "Touch Enhanced"? There are WAY too many nicknames, and they are all very confusing for me.
Simply put, I'm trying to find a touch that can at least play youtube movies at good frame rates (from wi-fi), and run most apps or roms well. However, I don't want to buy a model of touch and realize that there are no real mods for it to "pimp" it out. I have looked around on the search, but I feel these questions are a bit too "common sense" to be easily found anywhere.
Lastly, I'm not interested in a data plan, as I'm mainly wanting to use it as a PDA (don't need push-email or internet everywhere I go). Frankly, I live in a city dominated w/ wifi, and will be covered by that everywhere I go. Without a data plan, what apps or features will I be missing out on?
I really appreciate ANY help. Thanks for everything!

To answer your other question - most apps and programs can work with any windows mobile device - Most programs will say whether they are Windows 5 only or 6 only or 6.1 only if so. Also screen resolution is a factor for some programs vga - qvga etc..
ROM upgrading is device specific - do not put a ROM intended for Opal on a ELFIN or a ROM for Elfin on a Vogue etc....... Despite there similarities, there are differences and they are different devices.
Thank for the response!
I've taken a look over those wikis, and they helped quite a bit. However, I'm a bit lost with the elfin. In concerns of updating ROMs, is it the same as the Elf? There is no board for the Elfin, and there's not much data about the Elfin. I understand the main difference is the increase in RAM, as well as the jump from wm6.0 to 6.1, but I've also heard that the elf is compatible with 6.1. Would elf roms work just fine w/ elfin? I know that's not the case /w most others, but it just seems to me that the site combined the two.
Lastly, I can imagine the best place to find a list of roms is on the boards dedicated for that specific phone. Are there any major apps or features that won't function if I am not on a data plan? I tried searching, but it seems the majority have plans, and the few that do not don't mention the downfalls. I understand there is no push-emailing or no internet everywhere, but do some apps flat out not work at all w/o a data plan? Will the apps that require internet work over wifi? I know blackberry is STRICT with what they limit you on, and I was wondering if it's the same case here?
Thanks again for the reply!

Actually, my elfin only came with Windows 6.0 not 6.1. With regard to Rom's I havn't upgraded mine ever, so I can't tell you much about it but that there are some WM 6.1 custom Roms available for the Elfin in these forums. Most are linked to the Elf forum and Elfin Rom's I have found in Elf ROM threads with Elfin ROM Links. I don't have a data plan with mine - Use only WIFI as there are tons of open WIFI networks in my area. I havn't yet found any apps that dont work over WIFI instead of using data plan but I havn't tried every single app out there yet. Most apps that require internet will work over WIFI though. I check my email, surf the web, use various weather apps, listen to internet radio and Sirius radio online and even use google maps etc... all work great over WIFI. I live in Canada so (rediculous data plans here) so do not have a data plan for that reason. Would love an unlimited data plan to be able to listen internet radio anywhere I go.
Wow.. you're a goldmine of information. I really appreciate all the help! I feel completely sold on it now. Thanks again!
