Hi.
Just a thought here.
What if you would put magnetic tape on the areas on the picture.
That would take away the loose hinge problem, aint im right.
Then a thought about the magnetic, how will that screw up the gps, compass, the lcd screen or something else.
Anyone have any thoughts?

It would take away the problem. And an accurate compass.
And perhaps the screen.
The only other thing would be velcro. And screw that!
Any other ideas, the compass i can live without...
The screen is just a little harder to live without.
As DanWilson says, maybe very weak velcro will do the trick.
Dont think velcro is a good choice...
very very weak, maybe
I realise that different handsets suffer more or less from the hinge 'problem', mine seems to be fairly average and does open half way if you pick it not touching the bottom half. But for me I have to hold it in such an awkward way that I usually drop it before or when the hinge flops open.
I find that if I hold the phone in a normal grip with thumb on left side and fingers on the right theres no way it can come open no matter what angle you hold it at?
Is the hinge open itself? U cannot write sms/email in bed or it's just a little loose. I do not see how hinge can prevent normal usage of phone.
BTW. It's not a issue it's by design!
I have been saying magnetic tape is the solution for weeks now!
My Z's hinge is fine at the moment so I am not best to try it out but if anyone does please report back, although I cannot see how it won't work.

agree totally with u
Well written!
This has to be the biggest non-issue I've ever seen when it comes to cell phone design. I have seen the videos online and I have reproduced the "issue" on my DZ, but as D3LTA9 said earlier, I have to hold it so awkwardly and gingerly that I end up dropping it before the hinge opens.
If your fingers are more than 1/8" wide, you will not hold your phone like this in any real-life, practical operation of the phone.

Was just about the wrte the same.. i have a loose "hinge" but no problem..
so i ask "What Hinge Issue ???"
This was born out of people expecting something from the phone that it was not designed to do, with the way the hinge is designed it is always going to fall back on itself in certain situations, it doesn't lock into place and is not meant to.
Sure some are looser than others but its still not an issue, if you don't like it don't moan and try a replacement you need a different phone, get a milestone 2 or something.
Well, got my Z. Yes, it's loose, but I don't care, because opening and closing is very good and I don't use my phone like that, that keyboard would drop...
I'm sure mine is faulty, it just doesn't stay open when I'm trying to txt whilst doing a headstand!!
No,... seriously, mine is loose, doesn't take much effort to open or close, and it does shut itself if I open it and try to hold it face down horizontal... but I never need to use it in that position. Even in bed, if I'm lying on my back, there is always at least a 90 degree angle, maybe upto 140 degrees as the viewing angles are so nice.
My personal preference,... I would like it slight little bit tighter,... but saying that, then I wouldn't be able to open it with one finger???.... so actually,.... as it is is fine.

Has anyone here done the "magnetic tape" trick to fix their loose hinge? Mine is starting to get loose, but I don't think it's much of a problem even though I keep opening/closing it to see how loose it might be.
This was actually discussed and attempted sometime ago. The guy who did it said it worked great and he didn't have any issues with the compass/GPS. As far as I know, he was the only one who tried though (before the thread got locked due to immature and off-topic posts). Some pics of his mod are on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802202&page=3
There is a video demonstrating its effectiveness on the page after.
Another solution is actually taking the hinge apart and messing with the spring inside. This has been successful for a lot of people (myself included).

Okay so I was trying to clean out the dirt in the sides of my phone (the area between the screen and cradle) and noticed that the screen was ever so slightly left and top aligned than centered. In other words, there was less space between the screen and the cradle on the left and the top than there were on the right and the bottom. Not really a big deal, but a sign of poor manufacturing.
Anyone else have this on their phone?
Glad I'm not the only one with that problem, the right side of my screen has a little gap with the bezel, not much, but dust has gotten in there. I'm wondering if I should exchange it and try to get a more perfectly aligned model.
looks like the phone was rush to market with out proper QC

I am thinking about an exchange too, but am waiting for two things:
1) A case and SP to come in to prevent this from happening again
2) To see if this is a common problem
Surprisingly, I think this phone has actually one of the better shields between glass and bezel. I went through COUNTLESS (literally probably 10) Nexus One's with dust under screen (some had failed power button too). Next, the Vibrant was ok, but the following phone, my MyTouch 4G...oh man. Again, went through 5 of them all due to being shipped with multiple specs of dust under the screen. My Nexus S isn't perfect but at least this first one is decent.
One thing I learned..trading in one phone for another can bring unwanted problems. Others are complaining about home/back buttons on the side not working, others say GPS is an issue. You never know what you'll get, so be ready. I don't know how keen Best Buy is on swapping a few phones either.
In my experience though, HTC has far worse QC than Samsung (including the crappy HTC tinny speaker). Ugh, don't get me started on that.

i think you can always go to the store and check, i am sure you will find another one that doesnt have this problem as it seems to me its a manificaturing issue where it screen wasnt placed properly.
not a big deal but for an OCD guy like me. i wont be able to sleep at night till i get a better one lol
Mine looks to be centered, I can't see a difference between the left/right side.
Mine is not off center. But I do have some "lift" on the upper right hand corner (next to the ffc). I can press it down with a little play. Basically it doesn't sit completely flush with the bezel. It's not super noticeable. However the other three corners are fine. Not a biggie but it is noticeable.

heh just noticed that now that you said it, but im gonna go with saying that the NS isnt the only phone to ever have that problem, lol
Buddies NS does the same thing , againt not noticeable, just dont be prying out out with your fingernail
A simple question: is there any possible way to tighten the slide on the DVP? Basically, my top face is a little loose when the phone is in the closed position at the bottom right hand corner. I think it got a little loose when I was prying off the Otterbox case.
I'm guessing not, but I just wanted to know if someone might have figured out a way. I'm getting some screen burn-in anyway, so I might exchange the phone for that.
I'd be intersted to know as well as the screen on mine has gotten pretty loose over time. The screen moves noticeably when pressing on the bottom when closed. This happened just from everyday use.
I'm surprised that you mention burn-in as I didn't think that was possible with an OLED screen.
Not sure on the slider, but slight burn-in is normal on OLED screens. It will go away as you let it sit on the new screen for a while, but it is a part of the organic nature.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_LED#Disadvantages
my dvp was crappy from day one.
the slider mechanism is cruddy. ive even try to talk some sense into people about how the quality was poor.
everyone just blew me off as if it was fine.
thing is, it was probably loose all a long, you probably just didnt notice it.
most people dont notice these things until something happens to it, then they blame THAT instead.
look at my threads ive created .
I have to disagree, mostly because I remember not having any problems with the slider mechanism at first.
And then I tried to pry the case off to show it to a friend, and did it in a rush, and thus, remember noticing how much it was shifting irregularly.
Everyone's not in a conspiracy to prove you wrong, lemonspeakers. We're just not all going to have the same experience.
Frazzell, I know a certain amount of burn-in is normal, but I have mine set to black out after a minute anyway. A phone conversation with Dell revealed that they do, in fact, cover AMOLED burn in for replacement anyway, so might as well take advantage of it.

If you do exchange it, be sure to test the replacement to make sure it's stable. I had gotten a replacement due to dust and the loose slider, but the replacement locked up like crazy. I ended up keeping the original for now. I am beginning to think the dust and loose slider are inevitable.

Of course--it's the reason I'm not doing it immediately. Really, I think I made the mistake of wrenching the thing with my hands as I tried to pry off the Otterbox case, which is why I think this has happened.
In your first post, you pretty much exactly describe what I noticed (that is, if I close the phone and push the bottom right corner, there's some looseness clearly apparent). However, it's only in one corner. I'll have to give it some thought.
Does anyone's transformer feel lose in the lower right corner (where the clock it)?
when i squeeze the corner, it sort of "pops" like the tab is broken or not flush.
i tried to call asus but the phone number doesnt work???
1-888-678-3688
I am in the US. I got the number from http://service.asus.com/callus.html
What is the return policy of the retailer you bought it from? If you are not satisfied, I'd suggest exploring that.
Bye.
finally got the number to work, OMG, LONG HOLD for 7am EST
Let me know how it goes. I have the same problem.
mines is like that in the top left where thew volume button etc is but i can live with it
Mine creaks and flexes in the upper right corner area, but I only notice it when I hold it with one hand in that area (not often). Sucks that it's not flawless, but I figured there'd be a few things off at this price point, and luckily this is the only thing so far for me.
Yes, please let us know how it goes because mine is loose on the bottom right corner too. I've concidered just crazy gluing it because I figure its not really a defect since it doesn't directly affect the device.
I get the feeling that the edges of the plastic backing are "floating" and the mounts are farther in because around the edges I can feel the backing flex but the bezel is rigid. Im thinking the plastic backing is just a cover and doesnt provide anything structurally.
Just got mine today and the whole right side is movable to a rather high degree. Gonna see if I can get a replacement since it is a little more than what I am comfortable with.

I have the exact same problem. Its not worth the hasstle of getting it repaired.
I had the same issue on the left top where the volume and power buttons are. I fixed it by applying pressure with my fingers. there has to be a plasic tab or something cheap that holds it in.I know people got it open by running a guitar pick around the bezel.just try and push the edge thats loose till the tab catches it. be careful!
I also noticed that the plastic "bracket" around the rim of the device is loose on the lower right corner very shortly after I got it. Its a little disapointing, but honestly I forgot about it untill just now when I saw the title for this post, so as long as it doesn't get worse I don't really mind.
I wish mine was just that. I can actually look inside mine while holding with a decent grip if I don't have my MicroSD in. Oh well, Amazon said they will replace it when they are back in stock.

I and my brother have the same problem, on the left side of tablet, half way down from the top. Mine is not too bad, my brother's is pretty noticeable. He feels it isn't worth returning it, but it's definitely there. As much as I love this thing, I gotta say, quality control on this is horrendous. I expect much more from Asus.
Hi Guys,
Need some advice. I received my G5 today and i noticed there is a gap on the removeable battery grip.
Should i be worry about this or should i exchange it?
I was wondering if all unit have the same gap ?
Sorry for my poor English

It is a very common problem. You can keep exchanging it until you get a perfect one if it bugs you.
I personally would get a replacement unit if it was purchased new
From the look of your picture, it would seem only the one side has a gap. Are you sure the bottom is all the way in? I would try and remove the battery and re-seat the whole thing giving it a firm push on the left side to make sure it clicks into place. If it still doesn't and has the gap, I would return it.
That gap looks bigger than any other i have ever seen. Hmm is the battery all the way in? Try to push it a little to see if its all the way in. Otherwsie, i suggest to exchange it.
It's normal. If it's like the gap that i have, you only see it if you try to see it. I have on the left corner too. Can't see it when it's in a case.
I had the same issue, I knew this default and asked to change it the day one, I had a new one (perfect) the day after.
So yes, you should change it asap, for a "premium" phone you will regret.

Have it replaced immediately. That's the only solution.
Yeah, common problem. I opened the box before I left the store to check because I knew it'd annoy the hell out of me. Get a replacement for sure.
It should sit perfectly flush, maybe give it a push and see if it clicks in (the connector on mine was a bit stiff at first)
Otherwise, back to the shop I reckon.
thank's guys for your reply. Already exchanged my phone. The new one is way better.
You should see my G5. Warped bottom from the phone piece, gap on one side of the phone, one side is higher than the other, screen and back are oval shaped, you name it.
Get that returned while you still can, and a warning from someone who has, do, not, drop, this, phone. It started to really mess up the build. Mine has started rattling from the battery being loose inside, a bit of electrical tape fixed it but janky albeit.

Yeah, it's a common problem for it to not line up quite right, but you shouldn't be able to see light through it. Mine lines up pretty well.
