Hello,
If someone wonder, why the battery drain (vista is down) over the night is 20% or something high like that, i found an strange evidence.
If you run only SnapVue, and go off ... battery drain is normal 5mA/h for SnapVue standby.
Now ... if you start up Vista - do something like usb conection to resync, an shut vista down at last. SnapVue drains now 40-50!!! mA/h in standby.
(by comparison: in WM6 200mA/H in Vista 800-1000mA/H if backlight is 2.th low)
A softreset solves the problem - till you start up Vista again.
Maybe the intern active sync cost batery life? Perhaps someone will be able to found and fix this bug?
Bye,
Lyvia

I guess if you disable the usb hw (I disassembled usb driver in WM, and know how) then it wouldn't draw more. would you be willing to test a small app that tries to turn usb off?

well, hopefully I found which function starts up snapvue, I'll need to confirm it. the code for the function I already rewrote in C++ so that part is OK, I 'm just not 100% sure what it does, wakes WM up from suspend or boots it up. so need to test that first.
you need to hope it is not hardware based (i.e. put battery in and WM automatically starts up)

If you shut down Vista and remove the battery, and...put it back, there will be zero battery drain. Because WM is not running.
Till you restart Vista (and so restarting also WM), right?

yeah it is right but it is not a nice solution for a mobile device. we have to find solutions without removing the battery and we think that it's possible.

100% agree.
I read about people saying they have 3 hours battery life in Vista. Me having never more than two .

NO way shift with vista can output 3 hrs. Maybe only with some major tweaks and by leaving the device mostly untouched.

mine lasts 3 hours (ok, with wifi it is less )
500MB ram is free on startup + a couple apps
I use the same apps as on win95 so they run nice
and I don't have the backlight on max... that's the biggest saving

ah right. then it is software based. do you want to test a patched shagctrl? I would remove the code that wakes up WM - and let's hope this is the trick.

I´d like to test your application. If this work, maybe it can be added to the "detach from vista" option, from the Usb-conection tool.

by default Vista "suspends" instead of shutting down. Make sure you do a real shutdown and not a suspend and battery will not drain.
Hello,
Yes the power off button in Vista is a bit tricky.
But I´m sure Vista was down. No green blinking LED tell me, that Vista was in hibernate. But the battery drain was strange strong and i seek for a system. I solved the problem with WMsoftreset after shutdown Vista. And cmonex had an idea to solve the problem with an experimental application. Hope for it.

Anybody have any tips on getting the most out of your battery. I'm currently rumming WM6 business edition and just want to know how I can get more out of my battery. I have read to turn off wi-fi and gprs when not using it.. is there anything else that can be done. I have all the battery patches but i dont feel as if they are working..any help would be greatly appreciated
turn IR beam off too...
is that set on by default?
Turn off your phone overnight. You can get an app to do this by schedule (I cannot remember the name, sorry).

Do you do this during the night or throughout the day. Thus having the phone set to turn off after 5 mins of inactivity
by the way, how the heck can i disable "gprs always on" thing? i don't need gprs often, so it just hangs out there without a real purpose, and probably draining my battery a bit...

WM6 should do this after a standard install...by default! Make sure you have GPRS AlwaysOn turned off (Using a Registry Editor search for "Always" and find your matching Internet Connection. Set the value of the AlwaysOn DWORD to 0, not 1.)
Let me know if you need any other help.
i press the button on the top right whenever its not in use. And of course at night.
i set the display to the 2nd bar from the left. it saves way more battery then having the bar in the middle. i turned off the beam. i set power off to 2mins and backlight out @ 30secs. i push the power button (top right) during any phone call to turn the display off. my battery can last me all day and i talk/txt alot.

I meant turn it off if you leave it overnight without charging it. My point is moot if you charge it overnight anyway.
I charge mine at work mostly, so I don't charge it overnight. Generally I do so every couple of days.

Found it..but there is not a way to actually turn off gprs if I use it for direct push correct?
ok..not to start something but if uve gone as far to buy a ext battery and ur still not happy w/ batt life sell ur device and buy a nokia they are great on battery.. u cant expect to get good battery life out of this thing..i mean look what it does...
What kind of battery life are you seeing with the WM6 BE rom? I installed it a week ago and so far I've been AMAZED as the battery life. With my reg-tweaked Cingular 2.25 stock rom I'd end the day between 45-55%. Now It's 75-80% solid.
Also, it seems that Wifi uses less power in this rom too...
As of right now I'm not using my extended battery because i wanted to go back to the original battery that came with the phone for a short time since the other battery is bulkier, I only like to use it during the weekends when I'm not close to a power source. I've used all the tips in this thread and they have all worked as my battery has been going strong. thx
Hello,
Till you guys find a solution I am not using Snapvue at all, but the Shift very, very much.
My problem is that I load it 100%, shut Vista down..... and after 6 hours or so I lose 15% battery. Must be Snapvue....
I found a solution though:
1. Load 100%
2. Shut Vista down
3. Take out the battery and put it back. So no Snapvue startup.
4. After several hours still 100% battery.
Is there an easier way?
As I am flying a lot in the cattle class I need a small UMPC AND battery life.
Huib
P.s.
I am also in for some hints and tips which services I easily can switch off to keep performance up/battery low.
That doesn't sounds right to me.
I took my Shift off of the mains yesterday at around 4:30pm when I left work, and it's been sitting in my bag until I just read your post. Looking at it now, SnapVue has been running (with radio on) for approximately 28.5 hours and my battery is at 80%.
I actually thought I'd switched the radio off anyway, but it was still running and downloading emails all day.
Did you have the radio on for those 6 hours? If so, were you in an area where the signal strength wasn't good? I find my phones burn through batteries if they are continually hunting for a single or chopping and changing between 3G and 2G.
Regards,
Dave
Winmo will run for 1-2 days checking emails without interaction.
If your signal was low and it was constantly hunting for signal then that would definitely drain more battery.

Well, Dave,
I did not have any SIM card in at all.
But I will give it a new try. Try to be more precise.
-I fully load it.
-Then shut down Vista.
-And I will calculate the percentage left after 8 hours. Maybe I have more time and check it after 16 hours too.
Anyway... taking the battery out-and-in solves it for me: stays on 100%

Ok, it was 15% in 8 hours in stead of 6 then. In that case it was right:
45% in a day and 90% in 2 days.
This heavily conflicts with Daves' 20% in 28.4 hours!

Of course I did not have the screen powered up. That would take more than 15% in 8 hours.
Please.........
And I thought the phone is automatically off without SIM card.
My phone is in flight mode anyway, because I switched everything off.
But still, 15% in 8 hours is two days , so what's wrong with that?
So... once more. When I take out the battery and do NOT start Vista, the phone is not switched on, so power consumption is near to zero.
So: The only thing I am looking for is the software in Vista that triggers the Winmo to start. Because: Without Vista it never starts.

I doubt that there is "software" in Vista triggering WinMobile to start - as soon as you hit the power switch, both Vista and WinMobile boot up, but SnapVue is up long before the "PC" part of the Shift gets to boot Vista.

five hours Vsita closed 89% left

So this means two days in total.
And no SIM inside, and in flight mode.
Dissapointing....
So I still I am waiting for the answer: How do I prevent winmo/Snapvue from starting at all.

I'm wondering if there's a problem with your Shift itself.
I had my on today to install Vista SP1 (which I promptly removed shortly thereafter!) and switched it off at around 4pm - just over 4 hours ago. It was on mains power whilst I was using it, and I switched off the radio on SnapVue after I shut Vista down.
Looking at my Shift now, my battery is at 98%. I won't be touching it again until sometime tomorrow (at least I'm not planning to) so I'll post further battery drainage details again tomorrow.

Dave

Hi foxmeister,
why did you remove SP1? I plan to install it as soon as I've got my Shift.
There isn't much commenting on SP1 installations. Can anyone comment?
I remember reading somewhere in this tread that others also removed it after installing.
Any differences between "original" English version and other countries' versions like in the Snapvue part.
Thanks!

Hi,
I uninstalled it because there were a few issues that I didn't have time to resolve. Specifically:
1. The HTC communications centre crashed a few times
2. Origami wouldn't always start - it would sit on its flash screen
3. Internet access via HSDPA didn't seem to work.
Rebooting a few times brought my comms centre and Origami back, so I'm sure I could get the internet access going again given time, but I go on vacation tomorrow and I needed to get everything important installed on the Shift before I leave. It therefore seemed prudent to just restore back to my pre-SP1 image.
I'll try again once I get back from vacation.

Dave

exactly, this isn't a WM (=snapvue) issue, WM itself should be able to run for weeks in suspend

To be honest, I don't like it. It's really slow with everything.
I even installed Winamp (full version).
Winamp is much faster and works perfect on the Shift.
But the Origami is really slow so that's why I don't use it
As I loose that much per hour, I was wondering if that is abnormal.
I hard a n d softreset WM, have no SIM card in, just do NOT use WM.
Vista is fully switched off.
Pls tell me if that is normal and, if not, what to do .
Still interested in that miracle tool to switch WM off fully. I do not use it.
Huib
Yes it is abnormal! My Shift still has 92% battery life after 36+ hours (Radio off, WM sleeping, Vista off). I don't even get anywhere near 2% per hour with Vista booted but sleeping (more like 1%).
As I said before in your last thread on this subject, I think there is a specific problem with you device - I get about 2 hours from my Shift when Vista is awake, so I don't think my device is "special".

Sleeping? Or Hibernated? If you only drain 1% per hour in sleep maybe i will extend the time-to-hibernate in my profile to a few hours. Waking up from hibernate is fast - waiting for all the applications to get back to "normal" speed however takes like 3 minutes. So freakin annoying. Anyone else have this problem?

Neither sleeping, nor Hibernating Vista. Switched off! But WM of course.....
-------------
So:
My Vista is fully switched off.
I would be happy if I could get more statistics from your guys.
Pls switch Vista off on a fully loaded Shift.
Put it next to the bed, and see in the morning ( Lets say 8 hours) if it has more or less then, lets say, 85% power left.
-------------
Of course, as told so many times, when I take out the battery and put it back, there is no powerdrain at all ,because WM has not been started in that case.

I have the same problem like your shift
my battery also drain about 1-2% per hour even without using it (I leave it at my side when I sleep)
Up until now, I still don't get the reason why this happening
Because, when I first time got the device, it was last longer than that, I saw it just maybe drain up to 15% for 2 and a half days

Yep,
Till now only Dave does not have this problem.
I just tested with WIFI off, and same problem. There is no realation and should not be.
Especially when flying it is a problem, because then I really am without juice. I bought an extra battery however, but still.
So I (sigh) take the battery off and put it back quickly. That solves it
Huib
yes and I think right now the snapvue can't take the wifi out to work, so it doesn't have a chance to reduce the battery
Well, if you said only Dave, I think, mine at the first time doesn't have this problem
At the first time the shift was at my hand , it can last for maybe 4days without using it
Strange isn't it
Hmm. @Herpi.
In this Thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=389487
i found out:
If you run only SnapVue, and go off ... battery drain is normal 5mA/h for SnapVue standby.
Now ... if you start up Vista - do something like usb conection to resync, an shut vista down at last. SnapVue drains now 40-50!!! mA/h in standby.
(by comparison: in WM6 200mA/H in Vista 800-1000mA/H if backlight is 2.th low)
A softreset solves the problem - till you start up Vista again.

You must liberate your Shift to unlock SnapVue to real WindowsMobile6.
Guide:
http://www.modaco.com/content/windows-mobile-news/266537/liberate-your-htc-shift/
Then you have a "soft reset" programm, but your can use other applications, like taskmanagers (e.g. WK-Task | http://soft.photoracer.net/docs/wktask_en.html ) too.

Yes, my battery consumption is very similar to Daves, I don't seem to be leaking power when not in use. Vista hibernated, Windows Mobile checking 2 email accounts every 15 mins from 7am this morning until now, (5.20 pm), battery now on 92%.
Left unused, with the modem turned off but winmo running, it drops around 6-8% in 24 hours.

Well, that's supposed to be. When I got the shift for the first time, it was like that
But I don't know what make it like this now, eventhough I checked at battery meter, it just charge -43. Why it become so power hungry then ???
I haven't installed SP1, and don't plan to do so any time soon.
Don't know if that's relevant.

the battery can be drained very easily with any action
I just turn off my phone it was 21% charge i noticed the heating issue
and i turned it on again and the battery was 14%
just to restart my phone i lost 7%

Well, Its normal to get hot when taking a long call.. (10 min or more), but while in standby, it should NEVER get even WARM (mine stays cold as ice ) !!!
The power drain maybe is cuz your phone is heating.. The heat expands circuits and increase the power drain.

I wouldn't rush to send it back. It all sounds normal to me.
You must remember that the batteries will take a few weeks to attain full capacity operation.
Keep them on charge as much as you can (mains or car/plane etc), don't switch off at night, don't cycle them and don't drain them excessively.
If that does not give an improvement THEN take them back.
When I first got my TD2 I was appalled at the battery life and bought a spare battery. I have never used it.
And when they get warm it shows that they are happily being used or recharged and is no cause for concern.
Hi Cairo,
First of all, sorry for my english.
In my case, I bought my TD2 this summer, & I had some of these problems with the battery.
I'll tell you my steps, perhaps it could help you, if not, you must talk with HTC support.
First, use modaco's nodata to disable HSDPA/3G, use only GSM, it's much better to save battery. the link :http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/
Second: Active Sync.
You need a task manager to see notifications.
you must find one of the repllog event.
Use this http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm.
In notifications tab find "repllog AppRunAfterTimeChange" and disable it.
In my case I have disabled two events more, PushInternetScheduleTimeChanged and PushInternetScheduleTimeChanged1 and everything works fine.
After that, in process tab, if repllog appears, kill it, and in notifications tab find again the event "repllog.exe /remote /h",disable too, and use a reg editor (dot's taskmgr has one) and search in hkcu\software\microsoft\ActiveSync, find "KeepAlive" and you must change 1 to 0.
In this case, activesync will never start again, till you connect td2 to laptop or pc with activesync (it changes the value from 0 to 1).
I hope you could understand me and the info is ok for your td2.
Regards

I am really going crazy!!!!!!!!!!!
Tonight again after 8 hours of standby it went from 100% to 70% !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not normal...
I only have: weather every 6 hours, facebook every 2 hours, pushmail (but usually I turn it off at night)...
I do not have data autodisconnect, but untill a few days ago I never had drain issue...
I tried monitoring battery with a bat log program, and in standby it never goes lower than -75mA...
Signal at home is eprfect, so it cannot be a signal problem...
Could it be that my battery (after 1 year an 3 months) is nearly dead and in discharging quickly? How can I verify?
I am also attaching the datalog usage and as you can see there's not many data connections going on in standby: 22Kb from 22:00 till 23:00, 1Kb from 2:00 till midnight and 96Kb in 6 hours from midnight till 06:00am. I don't think that this data usage could justify a 30% drainage in 8 hours...
Thanks
75mA drain in standby is not normal, in WM you should be at 2mA.
If you can't identify which program is not sleeping then I would flash the newest stock ROM and see if this cures the issue.

When did you format your SD card for the last time? A heavily defragmented/malfunctioning SD card can cause huge battery drainage. So, if I were you, and it's a fairly long time ago, I would format SD Card (shut down device- take out Card and put in Reader - insert in PC -right click SD card and choose formatting (slow metho/ds) - after finishing reinsert Card in device and format again with SD card formatting tool). My battery is as old as yours and my overnight drainage in standby (with data connections on) is 3-4% max.

Sorry, hoped that this would be the "simple" solution of this problem. Does your battery take longer to fully charge than usual? If yes, than, certainly in combination with the drainage, I would replace the battery. Can't you borrow one to see if it's really the battery, cause that is still the best test to do? Maybe a superfluous question: did you try a hard reset?
regards, Kuzibri
Edit: forgot these two ones:
1. do you have sometimes the issue that during charging your LED goes from orange to green and back?
2. Clean the pins of the device, look if they function well and are equally high and also clean the contacts of battery with a soft clot

I don't know any1 else with an HD1 :-(
battery charges quite quickly on the wall socket, slower via usb butbthat's normal...
hard reset?!?!?! noooooooooooooo hahahaha I'm trying to figure out what's the problem to avoid hard resetting and spending 2 days reinstalling and reconfiguring everything

I have observed this problem also. My tool ResInfo showed me that the device does not change to standby. Only the backlight is switched off. The histogram of the cpu load shows that every few minutes a process becomes quite briefly active. Nevertheless, I could not investigate which module was responsible for it.
Since the ROM update from 1.72 to 3.14 I have not experienced this phenomenon any more.

Hi,
how can you tell exactly that the phone is not really going to standby?
Would it be possible, in your tool, to add a log function (in csv format) for both battery drain and cpu usage?
I am currently using a task manager tool which in real time shows the running tasks and their cpu usage, but this is almost useless in standby.
What we really need is a tool that, also in standby, keeps on logging active tasks and their cpu usage into a file, let's say every 1-2-4-5-10-15-30 seconds.

If we take the example of the original poster, after charging the battery to 100%, both counters shows 0 hours in the evening.
The next morning one would expect possibly following values:
Battery charge: 97%
Operation: 0h, 2 min, 42 sec
Standby: 8h, 42 min, 42 sec
But if you see this:
Battery charge: 70%
Operation: 8h, 45 min, 42 sec
Standby: 0h, 0 min, 0 sec
Then the device never was in the standby state.

This is not possible. Because in standby state, all components of the device are switched without current. Merely the memory (RAM) is supplied still with voltage to data preservation. In addition, the CPU is switched off. Merely a separate, programmable timer and a component for monitoring of the external interfaces are still in company. Therefore, no application can be executed.Hence, such a tool can recognize only after the turning on of the device whether the battery was charged/discharged while in suspend state.

I didn't mean to imply that it was the ROM causing the issue, just that a hard reset of the phone's state to a known 'good' condition would remove the doubt of a software change/corruption causing your problems.
If a hard reset and stock ROM still produce the same battery drain then your hardware maybe faulty. To eliminate a software issue try the fresh ROM for a few days without any 3rd party apps installed.
