how do I use my phone as a Modem?
PDANET
You can Use PDANet there is also a reg hack but for that you would need a program phm registry editor
or just use the built-in internet sharing app...with my sprint mogul with the new stock rom, it works perfectly on either setting (sprintpcs or phone as modem) for tethering. wmwifirouter is good too. tethering with the usb cable is fastest for me, yielding speedtest.net test score of 1630 kb/s down and 374 kb/s up. But even an old usb bluetooth 1.1 dongle got me around 900kb/s down and 300kb/s up (all using the built-in internet sharing app). wmwifirouter gets me about 1200kb/s down and 300 kb/s up (plenty for my ipod or friends with iphones and their archaic edge). the phone gets really hot using the wifi if you keep it plugged in (not so with bluetooth or just tethering).

I'm having a tether problem that I'm hoping somebody can help me with. Getting the actual tethering to work is no problem, I've been able to tether via DUN, Bluetooth, PDANet and also with Internet Sharing on the new ROM.
The problem I have is with speed. I'm in an HSDPA area and am getting HSDPA data (this is definate). Tethering using any of the above methods to my XP Pro PC with a USB cable (USB 2.0 ports) gives me a peak speed of roughly 600kbps - like clockwork (Bluetooth, of course, is slower.) For the longest time I believe the problem was something with the phone but then when I connected my phone to another PC I got the speed I expected (1 - 1.1 Mbps) consistently. That guys phone also get similar speeds on his PC. Connect his phone to my PC and the speeds go to 600 kbps.
I've updated every driver and piece of software that I can think of but I can not get the problem fixed. I'm pulling out my hair (and don't have alot to spare anymore.)
Any ideas???
Bob
Anybody have any ideas? This is driving me nuts. I hate to have to go get an aircard when I know that this can work.
On a side note, I borrowed an AirCard and got as high as 1800 on the download (3 blocks from the tower . . . ) which was cool.
Thanks!
Fixed - needed to increase the RWIN value (per dslreports.com). See http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1116230
Thanks,
Unbelievable! works like a charm!
Hi
The tethering speed on my computer is much slower than the actual speed on my phone. I tried both ICS and WMwifirouter via usb to tether. And they both show similar speed. So i don't think it's because of software.
0.5m kbs on computer vs 1.7m kbs on phone
do you guys know a solution for this?
before i used Samsung a777 to tether and the dl speed was 1200kbs
so i don't know if ATT now block smartphones form tethering?
Make sure in Settings/Connections/Connections you have set both networks to MediaNet and take out any proxy settings.
Not sure why it would be slower though.
I tether and the speed is the same without any tweaks.
I tried using the USB Tether to share my phone's 4G internet connection with my laptop, but everytime I do that, it disconnects the 4G and turns on 3G.
Is it not possible to USB tether 4G?
Reason why I'm asking is because I noticed on avg a 1mbs drop in speed when sharing internet over wifi.
I do know that it works fine with easytether, but I'm not sure about pdanet or native.

Yep. Root and wireless tether works fine!

Sent from my rooted Evo...duh.. MIUI rom.
4G and the stock evo usb tethering does not work. However pdanet works fine, but seems to limit speeds to ~4-5 mbps. Also, you need to install a client on the pc making use of it, not to mention having to pay if you want to access ssl sites.
Find wired tether on the market - it works well with usb without the speed limitation. Your pc detects the usb connection as a ndis connection. You will still need drivers, so include them on your sd card. Initially, setup the usb connection as disk drive so you can pull the drivers.
I've seen speeds peak as high as 12-13 mbps with usb tether during off peak times. Never seen speeds that high with wireless. Of course, for basic browsing, 4-5mbps is plenty.
+1 wired tether
Is there a way I can USB tether my tablet to my phone? I believe 3.1 has USB host support, so if I got the USB adapter for my tablet would it be able to use it for internet? I don't want to buy the adapter before knowing if it's going to work.
The reason I'm asking is that I've always used USB tethering on my Evo 4G when tethering to my laptop, and I get great speeds. However, I tried wifi tethering for the first time today with my Galaxy Tab and found that download speeds won't go above 250 kilobits/sec, while upload speeds are 1.2Mbit/sec. From my phone the speedtest still shows 6-7Mbit/sec download speeds, which is the same that I get over USB tethering. Wifi tethered download speeds are also this slow when using my laptop. I tried disabling encryption and disabling CPU scaling (ie set min and max freq at 1Ghz) in case the phone was CPU bound, but it had no effect. The actual load on the phone was minimal during a wifi tethered speed test (3% usage). So there must be something wrong with wifi tethering on my phone.

<<would also like to connect tab to evo using tether ( my tablet sees it and displays "connected" but nothing loads in a browser.

Hmm, I wonder if logcat and/or dmesg have any useful info. It could be an issue of the usb networking driver not being present, or it could be something simple like the tablet not using dhcp to ask for an IP or DNS server.
This is more for people who live in rural-ish areas (Like Me), who can't get decent internet for gaming.
I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS METHOD ON BLUETOOTH OR WIFI TETHERING, ONLY USB.
People who use Verizon tethering as a everyday necessity for home PC access, knows there's a 10-15gig cap.
I'm sure you all use a app like PDANET+ or so on to bypass it, but don't you notice the increased latency?
(Can also cause increased speeds because you're technically using Verizon's tethering, not PDANET+'s)
This is a fix for that, more like a bypass I suppose.
1) Install/Purchase PDANET+ from play store.
(I'd link it, but this is my first post, they won't let me.)
2) Turn on USB tethering in app, BUT DO NOT CLICK CONNECT ON YOUR PC YET.
3) Turn on USB tethering on through your phone and connect it to your PC.
(Let this connect)
.4) Now connect PDANET+ tethering through your PC.
Very simple.
What I've noticed is that PDANET+'s connection is not used but in fact STILL hides all tethering usage.
By inspecting my Ethernet in/outputs through task manager I noticed PDANET+'s connection is not in use.
But the original phone tether is, if you watch it, while opening a website, it will show 0kbps sent and received.
BUT the graph will show that it's actually sending a full speed NON-throttled connection.
Which means you're getting fasted speeds, and better latency typically (not in all cases) than PDANET+'s.
That's about it for my first post, ya'll play around with it.
Thanks!
