Internet Passthrough or Internet via USB - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

I decided to start a new thread about this since the other one never got a response.
Have you guys tried this? I am not getting any connection at all unless I disable
Settings>USBtoPC>Enable Advance Network Functionality, BUT once I disable it too just to, I get intermittent PC connections, sometimes it will connect, sometimes it wont with activsync giving me an error.
With it enabled, I see where the problem is, it cant seem to get a good IP address, please refer to pic below.
Help an1?

Possible solutions
First off a few questions. Since you say "ActiveSync" I assume you have a version of Windows XP (Pro or Home). The first thing to check when you try to connect your phone is to make sure you disable your firewall or to create a specific rule that will allow the OS to interact through the virtual network to your phone (in my case, Win XP and Outpost Firewall, I had to allow NetBios over this network and to allow all access for activesync software).
Now, the second thing:
The IP address does not matter that much. Either if it's 192.168.0.2 or the one you posted is the same thing. I have a TyTn and ActiveSync gives me a similar IP address to the one that you have, so it should work for you too.
You mention of an error. Is this an error on the PC in the classical sense (Message box with red X and only an OK button) or is it something that appears on the PDA? If it is the first case (PC error), please post a print screen of it so we may see what we are dealing with...
If it is the second case (error on PDA), the most common problem with Internet passthrough (via ActiveSync on USB Cable Connection) is this:
hxxp://www.aximsite.com/boards/activesync/137666-fix-unknown-error-0x80072f78.html
On that page you can find a link to a .REG file that should be run on the PC. After that you should have a working Internet connection on your PDA (at least this was the case for me).
Sorry for the long reply, but your post was not very detailed.
Cheers,
Screech

Hello thanks for your reply,
I am using winxp Pro on my desktop and winxp home on my laptop. I cant get internet passthrough on both devices.
I use NOD antivirus and windows firewall. attached below is the exceptions rule activesync is included.
as for the error:
I only get the error on the PC if I have this disabled on the PPC
Settings>USBtoPC>Enable Advance Network Functionality
The error also does not happen all the time. But putting this error aside, it also gives me internet pass through. But because of the occasional errors, Id rather turn:
Settings>USBtoPC>Enable Advance Network Functionality
That on.

cant get usb to send internet to pda!!!

I have searched everywhere (here and on other sites) and it seems like if I tell the activesync to pass through to the internet, I should have internet on my pda when connected via usb...
This is not happening! I went through all options and used a few troubleshooting things that nobody seems to mention (like ipconfig from the ppc msdos console) and I can't figure this out at all!
I am using a wallaby (siemens sx56) plugged into my laptop, which is wirelessly connected via home network into cable modem. I put every .exe file in the program files/activesync directory on the "pass through" list of the firewall.
When activesync connects, all looks normal unless I try to get online via ie (from the pocket pc). If I go to the ppc dos prompt and try ipconfig, it reads me back 192.168.55.101 as the ip address, and 192.168.55.100 as the gateway. These are not close to my network settings. It can't ping my laptop and my laptop can't ping the ppc using the above address.
What am I missing??? I am using xda-developers operating system and activesync 3.8 on my laptop. PLEASE HELP!!!!
ps. I am planning on getting a wireless card for the ppc - might I still have this problem when I try to connect using that too??
Thanks -- AshayinFLA
wallaby's SD interface dont support SDIO which are wifi and well everything but memory SD cards require
so getting wifi will not help you
activesync have some settings related to sharing the connection
so theres no way to get this thing online (except pay for cellular service or <supposedly> through usb cable)?
That sucks!
Anyway, as for the usb thing, I looked through activesync on my laptop and the only thing i could find is where it should connect to (internet or work). I tried both with no results. Is there anything I'm missing?

Slight Activesync problem !

Just a slight issue. Everytime I connect the Exec (via USB) to the computer it Sync`s quite happlie (files get updated etc). However after a minute or two the Exec pop up a window with this message
Pocket PC Networking
! Unable to obtain a server
assigned IP address. Try again later
or enter an IP address in Network settings.
Why is it asking for Network when I`m using USB ?
Any ideas ?
Also anyone get this error " This device has no bluetooth hardware" normally only appears after the bluetooth has shut itself down and I have to manually start it again.
Latest O2 rom on O2 Exec running default programs in corp mode.
New with Activesync 4.x
With Activesync 4.x (to support WM5) the USB connection runs TCP/IP. Bluetooth and IR work just as before. What is unusual in your comment is that I had understood that the Pocket PC is the DHCP server and it assigns an address to your PC, not the other way around.
Nonetheless if it syncs each and every time then count yourself lucky, because for a number of us there are some serious issues, especially if you are running a personal firewall on the PC that is other than that included in XP. Other issues have been documented and a search using your favourite search engine or at the Microsoft knowledgebase will reveal them.
Hope this helps!
Might not be the same issue but you may find my post in this topic of use

Problem on Internet Sharing

has anyone of you experience this problem? in previous WM version 6.1, once you paired the PDA phone with say your laptop via bluetooth, then you are supposed to go Internet sharing click on PC Connection:Bluetooth PAN, Network Connection: Internet, once you press on "connect" button, the screen will show "Connected" . Now you can go to your Laptop & press Network Access service and laptop would be able to access internet wirelessly via your PDA phone.
but now in HD2, once you press "Connect" button it will go into device selection mode prompting you to select a device..and it always failed to connect if I choose my Laptop.
Any advice what went wrong?
Btw, HD2 becomes so disappointing really, besides the SMS not-send problem, my HD2 goes into sleep mode & unable to wake-up when presson hard button..quite frequently.. sigh..
I've got the same problem. Want my internet sharing back please! Has anyone got it working, and if so how?!
When I pair my phone there is always a bluetooth peripheral device driver failure (have manually installed wmdc and the driver) so didnt know if this had something to do with it?
Thanks.
Owen.
Can anyone help on this please? Are other people's working ok? What software/radio are you using?
tried down grading to radio 2.05 but still not working
I have another kind of problem with BT sharing mode. Probably, it is on the side of laptop, but any suggestion would be nice.
On a WIN XP machine, I do the connection as usual, XP asks me for "Allow to connect", so I click YES. Then it looks like connected, I get DHCP, DNS, GW is set, but i cannot even ping the phone(192.168.0.1), not talking about any internet IP. Bluetooth PAN networking is enabled on XP.
On other laptop, WIN7 x64, the procedure is the same and it works!!! There is just one more confirmation on the phone, something like "Allow internet access to....?" I select yes and all is fine. Same DHCP, same DNS, same GW.
No confirmation about allowing access when paired with XP, probably because there isn't even a try from the computer(as it cannot reach even its own default gw).
BT file transfer works on XP without problems, just TCP/IP no-go. Maybe some firewall(win fw is OFF), hidden process, service, group policy setting...?

Unable to establish ActiveSync after Internet Sharing

Hi,
I have found several posts somewhat similar to this one but actually none of them reported exactly my problem, that's why I dare posting a new thread.
After first use of my Touch HD in "Internet Sharing" mode, ActiveSync stopped working at all. Every time I connect the phone to a laptop with USB cable, it shows the option screen with "Internet Sharing" chosen as default. I can tick the ActiveSync radio button and then Done button but I get no connection. The laptop shows a new "local connection" with some private IP assigned but ActiveSync icon stays grey. The DiskDrive mode works fine but here also something has changed: HD does not remember this option as default for the next connection (as it used to before). I tried that with two laptops, same effect. Tried unchecking "Enable advanced network functionality" - no success. Tried soft-reset the phone and restart the XP on laptops - no success either.
I am using ActiveSync quite a lot, although in Guest mode only, for new software installation (many do not have CAB versions) and quick data transfer that does not disable all my software installed to SD card (as the Disk Drive mode does).
I guess (still not tried, however) that a HR would fix the problem but I think it is not a right way to switch between Internet Sharing and ActiveSync
any help would be much appreciated,
regards, Michal.

Hi Michal,
When you started Internet Sharing mode on your laptop I dont think that should have interferred with your ActiveSync. Internet Sharing basically turns your PC into a DHCP server just like a router - it hands out IP addresses (with a given range, subnet mask etc). Internet traffic can then be routed via the PC.
Check your IP settings on both your laptop on also within the connection settings on your HD. The IP settings on your HD should have a static IP address and NOT be set as automatically assigned, as you suggested.
As you have the same problem on two laptops I would hazard a guess that its the IP settings on your HD, try changing this.
Best Regards.
I guess there is a misunderstanding. I used my Blackstone as Internet Sharing device, not the PC. The phone was connected to the Internet via GPRS/EDGE and the laptop was using this connection.
regards, Michal.

Remote Desktop Help

So I want to use remote desktop on my TP2 to connect to my laptop at home. I've done all the requirements to allow to use this feature; I've enabled port forwarding in my router settings and I have enabled remote desktop on my laptop's Windows 7 system properties. And on my TP2 I enter my ip address for the "computer" field, my Windows 7 account user name in the "user name" field (I only have 1 account on my laptop and it is admin), and the account password in the "password" field. After all of this, my TP2 will still not connect to my laptop. At this point I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Can anybody help?
Does your computer has public IP Address?
Yes. I go to www.whatismyip.com and it displays my ip address. I've tried entering this address in the "computer" field as well and nothing.
you'll need to forward port 3389 through any router you may be using (check out portforward.com)
you'll also need to enable RDP connection on the machine through System>Remote.
there are 1001 guides you'll find with a quick google, its not a phone specific thing.
edit: ive previously found that the WM RDP client wont start a 'net connection itself. if you find the same, just do it manually through com manager or check ur mail etc.
Did you forward port 3389 to the internal ip address of your laptop?
Do you have a software firewall on the laptop that may be blocking access?
First try to figure out where the error occurs.
Try to connect to your pc, using an other pc ( from outside )
If it works, it must be a setting in your mobile device.
If pc also doesnt work, it should be a port problem, in that case, try using hamachi..
Oh, and check if you dont have a blocking program, or firewall .. like suggested above
Does my phone need to be connected to wi-fi in order to use remote desktop or will it just use my carrier's data service?

it will use any data connection available, no need to connect to wifi if you have data plan activated.
some tips:
1. you must have NAT (port forwarding) configured in your router
2. If your router has public IP address on WAN port, then point 1. is just sufficient if you are on some routed network, than you need to ask your provider, maybe you will be lucky
2.1. (here are network ranges used as private, only for identification)
from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
from 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
from 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
3. point 1. specification - enable NAT from WAN port to local IP address of your computer, specific port is TCP 3389. Also is good to make a reservation on DHCP server for this PC.
4. you need to enable remote desktop on your PC
4.1. computer properties - remote desktop setup - and its middle line on remote desktop settings
4.2. click "choose users" and check if your account is listed
Thanks alot to everybody's help! Your advise allowed me to get this things working, I really appreciate it. I had the port open and had remote desktop enabled on my computer but the thing that was killing me was I had the windows firewall on and my ESET Smart Security firewall on as well. Once I disabled them I was able to make the connection. What a head ache those firewalls gave me. I thank you all once again for your assistance.

The answer depends on what you have available to connect to. Your network (if any exists) and the machine/OS you want to connect to.
If you could let me know the following, I'll see if I can help:
How you machine's connected to the net. (for example, mines something like PC>Router>Cable modem>outside world).
The operating syustem in use on your PC. Specifically please, the edition and version is important to know. Mine's Windows 7 Ultimate, for example.
but, to cut a long story short: if you're not using a home edition of one of the recent windows OSs (XP and later), I'd suggest Remote desktop's the best way to go. There's a .cab knocking around here if you don't already have it on your phone and the PC end's described in the 'Configure Remote Desktop' and 'Configure Your Router' bits of this page: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx (ignore the other sections, they're not relevant unless you're running IIS)
enjoy
I have a WIFI Router installed, have a laptop with VISTA ULTIMATE and PC with XP Professional.
I am already able to RD my laptop from my PC.
I want to RDS my laptop from my phone via the same network/WIFI. I think it is pretty simple.
This is what I am doing
I have installed Remote Desktop Mobile
I have connected to WIFI
when I run Remote Desktop Mobile & enter my laptop's name, with username and password and click connect, connecting remains on top and is not connecting it. I am not in any domain, do i have to leave the domain name empty?
if you're not using a domain, leaving it blank's right.
Does it just time out on your phone?
Do you get the same if you try connecting via IP instead of your machine's name?

I am able to connect from my pc.
When I try to connect from my phone either by IP or computer name, it does not even time out, it just remains stuck at Connecting...
Nothing happens after 5 minutes, even no error message appears.

Your laptop seems to be configured well ( you can access it using the pc )
So it must be a setting in the phone. You sure it is connected to wifi , maybe it stays on 3g ) Or maybe your laptop only allowes 1 ip to connect ( the pc's ip )
I am even able to connect to my laptop over internet as the port 3389 is fwd.
Do I have to configure anything on my phone other than installing that cab file?
Or maybe the cab file I've installed is corrupt or something, can someone please share the cab file?
