Users in France...need some advice - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have a colleague who will be spending a month in your beautiful country and is in need of a communication method to do the following:
1) Voice communication back to the USA and within France
2) If possible use video cameras to communicate back to family and work.
I wonder if lending him my hermes while he is there will satisfy these needs. Is there a cellular provider there that has a pay per use SIM that he could purchase and use the voice and data services to place voice calls and stream video from the cameras on the Hermes? Is there a IM client (Skype or similiar) that can use the cameras on the Hermes if the cellular service is cost prohibative but can use 80211 instead?
Any advice would be VERY helpful!
Thanks!

Call costs display?

I am currently visiting Poland, and using a local simcard. During calls my old T68 displays the current balance on my account in real time. My XDA-II just displays the duration, giving me no way of checking call costs. Is there any way to enable this feature, or any third party programs which can do it?
Phone Dashboard Minute Trackerv 1.0 Arm Ppc Phone Edition
There is a good software:
Phone Dashboard Minute Trackerv 1.0 Arm Ppc Phone Edition
that should fulfill all your needs. I can send U this.
Doesn't work with pre-pay cards. I contacted Hudson Mobile for this.
It's only intended for subscribers.
Grtz,
Jos
it would be easy to program though the program would just call the api call which give the cell call time and multiply it with the price typed in by the user and subtracted from the full cost on the sim card
of cause that could be the problem that windows dont support reading that factor from the sim card
I realise call costs can easilly be calculated from the call duration, but I was referring to a feature which most phones have which shows call costs in real time based on information sent by the network.
With my SIMPLUS account here, on my T610, during any phone calls the display shows information on the balance remaining on my account. Unfortunatly with sim plus, this is the only way of checking the remaining balance. On my XDA II I only know when I've run out of cash when calls get blocked.
heyah maybe?
Swith to Heyah - new prepaid offer. It's best offer on the market today and U hear voice info before each call (ca. 14s - duration) when U have AFAIR 5 zl left on your account. It's very cheap and simple offer but there's no MMS and GPRS at all..

Softphone through GPRS/EDGE connected to Astrerisk

I have an HTC TyTN and T-Mobile service plus a Trixbox/Asterisk VOIP installation at my office. I would like to be able to use my TyTN as a softphone through my Trixbox while we are in Europe so I can continute to work with clients and not have to pay the international rates. Anybody had any luck with this? I have one person that may know the answer and help but I'm looking for definite answers now as I am leaving soon. Whatever I find out from my contact I will post here but would appreciate anybodies help in the meantime.
Thanks,
Allen
Buehler, Buehler? Okay, here is what's going on. I have the softphone installed and registerd with Asterisk but even with a full signal over EDGE the voice quality sucks. I guess until we all have UMTS or better we will stick with international rates.

Fax, Answering machine, or Internet for 56k modem

OK I got a NIB Socket CF 56k Modem on ebay for next to nothing. I couldn't pass it up. BTW its a v.92 and I have a Dell AXIM X50v
1st. I want to access the internet when I'm traveling or in an emergency though dial up. I will spend about $6 a month for it if I have too. Who supports this kind of service? My broadband provider has free dial up but they have a propietary dialer you have to activate that isn't for WM. Anyone know what company's I can look at? I got onto the free new england dial up no problem. But I'm in Florida AC(813).
2nd Is there any answering machine software I can get? The cards supposed to support caller ID etc....
3rd Is there any kind of fax software I can get to receive faxes while I"m mobile?
Anyhelp would be greatly apreciated.
thanks guys

1 not sure what it is you want to do a pda cant use an external old analog modem
and one cant connect to a normal analog modem service with a pdaphone
one can connect with a laptop to an analog modem service and connect to the laptop with the pda.
but if one is traveling in other countries and connect to an isp at home it will cost alot

So far the best solution seems to be dial4less.com here in the states. They say there fully PPC compatible and don't use dialers. Covers a lot of the U.S. And they have a 25 hour a month plan for 5.99 a month.
I'm gonna play with the i secretary. Now I just need to find a fax program. Any other ISP's I should look at lemme know. I'd love to get 5 or 10 hours a month for cheaper.
ok I found a great fax program for a cf 56k modem too. Its called KSE True Fax 2004 3.01v. I tried other versions but they only worked with WM phone editions. This will work with a normal PDA with a compact flash modem.

T-mobile web'b'walk max (UK)

Hi, does anybody have this plan? I cannot get a straight answer from T-mobile. It says that you have unlimited surfing (well 'unlimited' to 10GB anyway) and voip eg skype. I cannot find out if the Skype is restricted to Skype users only (as '3' do) or if it is completely unrestricted I want to make calls to international numbers on Skype using my Skype account. Can anybody give me a straight answer?

the web`n`walk max is unrestriced from what i understood and not based on Skype account
yes, cyberjak, but do you have this account and have you dialled an international number?
You're using a data connection through Skype's client software irrespective of the number your dialing.
The data doesn't cost any extra.
You don't get charged extra for sending e-mails or MSNing to someone in another country. Why would Skype be any different?
Hi Slave1, my question is not about the charges, it is: does T-mobile block dialing through Skype the same as '3' does. Do you have the max plan?
My priceplan is slightly better that WnW Max. But I don't know anyone who lives in another country and only use Skype to Skype calls (I'm a cheap skate and get very cheap calls on my mobile).
If you have WnW Max you also have Free Hotspot access. Send OPEN via SMS to 9526 to retrieve your HotSpot username and password. If this doesn't work call 150.
'My priceplan is slightly better that WnW Max' but cheaper ?
I know there are ways to get through the Skype block but I mainly want the plan for cheap international calls and I dont have a landline in my apartment. If I pay for the max plan I want to make sure it will do what I want. I have no problem finding people telling me what the plan should do (mostly they are on commision)
I have the Web N Walk Plus (Max) with my Vario III, this is what I have come across so far...
Skpe, doesn't work for me although as I understand it this maybe a software issue with the Vario III and not T-Mobile?
International, I was asked to pay a £250 deposit to have International call roaming activated - I told them to stick it
HPDPA, Wonderful and I also use it with my laptop for browsing have no idea about max download as I don't download that much.
@ gazzacbr
Order it off the website. Do it by 5ish today and you should have it tomorrow. Try Skype if it doesn't work how you want it to, send it back (you have 7 days to request this - called a DSR return, but ONLY from the website or telephone sales).
There you go, advice and no commision
ok thanks for (free) advise, Slave1. Maybe I will just try it and see.
StellaDell, I have a HTC Kaiser which is the same as the Vario III and have no problems running Skype on the web'n'walk daily plan. The version I have is SkypeForPocketPC 2.2.037 off their site. Install it from a PC connected by ActiveSync.
I have had my t-mobile PAYG for many years and roaming was activated for free a long time ago. I assume the £250 is to stop you running off with the phone if its a new contract.

Restrictions @ german UMTS flatrates (VOIP, IM...)

Hello...
Here's a question to all germans with a data option or a separate data plan...:
I currently have the 250 MB optioon of E-Plus. It's cheap, but the radio reception is horrible and there is no EDGE and HSPDA and so on... So I plan to buy a data card from Vodafone or T-Mobile. As I saw, they both forbid IM and VOIP. E-Plus only does this with VOIP. IM is THE service I use with my cellphone and my notebook via cellphone on the road.
Is it really like that? Are you not able to establish an IM Session like ICQ or MSN? Neither with ICQ Software nor with Trillian or something like that? I can't beleive that. WTF? This is one of the most usable services besides E-Mail and WWW! I can't abstain from chatting on the road...
With E-Plus I am always able to chat with Trillian...
Is that really a question of having good radio reception and high speed connection on the one side and chatting on the other side?
Very annoying thing....
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Noone here using those flatrates and wants to share his expreiences?
Hi man,
i have the tmobile web n walk handy flat for 10€ a month.
They write no IM and no VOIP and just http and https but everything will work will work. If they filter it we can use a vpn to redirect our whole web traffic. I call t-mobile and asked them and the y told me that a vpn will always be allowed
Thanks for your info. Do you use it as a seperate dataplan or as an option to your phone plan? I read somewhere that they use different settings for filtering IM and so on on both products...
All only ****ing,
Vodafone does allow IM, in the conrtact they say its disallowed but i can use everything !!.!!
t-Mob also allows all stuff, they dont have a tecnicaly correct way to block it as there are so many different ports/datastream types for IM / VoIP.
So just get what u like and be happy !
Greets
Skype work fine on all of them (TESTED !!)
Hello Neutron83,
thanks for reply. But I have to veto. I tested an old (about 1 year old) Web N Walk data plan (no option to an existing phone plan), there it works w/o problems. Trillian is able to conenct to ICQ and MSN.
A friend of mine has a new contract, same as above. He is not able to connect to Skype or ICQ.
What provider / data plan do you have? When have you contracted it?
Inreceived today my EeePC and my T-Mobile web'n'walk Stick IV... and IM works w/o problems...
I don't understand how they block that... and for which connections. At some friends it works, at some not...
However, I don't want to complain about that Just for your information.
Thank you for your Feedback.
Have fun with your EEE
