Vista can use external USB sticks to boost up speed of windows vista, is there such an ap for the WM6? I was thinking of getting an 8gig for me dual touch but Im sure I wont be able to use all of that so was thinking, what if I could use half of that to boost up speed?

I think the hardware interface between the SD card and device is too slow to help much.
Install most of your programs to the SD card and it will save the program storage area on your device.
Then maybe someday someone will write some software to utilize the storage area to use as ram.

A wonderful day indeed. I do install most of mu aps in the Card, but here are aps that need to be installed on internal mem also. Anyway, Will hope that one day someone looks into this
Someday, there shall come a 10gb WM device... then 60... then 100...

One thing to note - the performance improvements in Vista with using external memory sticks is negligible. I've got a 2gig one stuck in the side of my laptop, and wish I could get my money back. Its useless.

I'm wondering what speed the SD card reader in the Universal is?
Is it worth spending a little extra on some 60x Corsair SD cards or should I just get the bargain bin stuff since the Universal maybe doesnt have a particularly quick card reader?
Any advice welcome. I plan to use this is a system disk with seperate 512 card for my MP3's and pod casts/documents. THAT will be cheap stuff.
But for the main I need a 1gb system disk for storing apps and system stuff.
Compared to a dedicated USB card reader for the PC, the Universal is extremely slow - I have tested this with my 150X 2GB SD card. So unless you plan on using it with a PC card reader, it doesn't really matter
Accessing the SD card through activesync was at least 10 times slower than the card reader...
I did a small test with Pocket Mechanic.
1. My "normal" 2 GB sandisk gives 0.84MB/sec
2. My super duper Extreme III Sandisk 1 GB gives me a whopping 0.88MB sec.
Nr . 2 card, in my portable, writes files much, much faster than nr.1.
You can see however that in my Jasjar the difference is nearly zero.
I would say: go for the cheapest, but I am not a great technician.
Huib
Thanks guys ..
Very informative and will help me get the right card. ie. the cheapest!

Hi
I have not noticed any difference between a basic Sandisk card and a so called 66x KingMax card when used in the exec.
I do notice a difference between these two cards when using them with my digicam - the multishot mode (2 frames/sec) actually works cause the camera is able to write to the card quickly enough. With the slow card, cam kept pausing to write its cache onto the card.
I am not sure that pocket mechanic tells the truth! Likewise, timing a copy from the internal flash to an SD card is not gonna give accurate results (speed of internal flash may be bottleneck). On Wm2003 devices this was possible cause RAM is loads faster than flash still.
You cant test the speed of the SD reader in the exec over activesync tho!! Its a USB 1.1 device (max 11Mbit) and on top of that activesync treats it as a 10Mbit network card. Max you'll see after overheads is thus around 1MByte/sec

getting 2gb sd card.. either transcend or pretec...
by the way exec sd slot is 1.01 or 1.1 specification?
hope someone has a benchmark to share.. thanks
1gb Scandisk does the job for me.
Watched a movie on it the other night, perfect. Plenty fast enough.
Its HTC so you can be assured it will be genius design with cheap crap chipset.
Bit like an Italian sportscar.
get one of those sd-usb card combo's....if u can find one going at a decent price.
saves the hassle of card readers. the LAST thing anyone needs is yet another wire lol
I'm copying largish files to my storage card (around 200MB) But the progress bar moves REALLY slowly, then gets to about 50%, then it starts over again.. then loops!
I've been copying smaller files (~10-20MB) with no problems whatsoever...
btw: do i HAVE to have activesync loaded to be able to access the storage card?
Any help appreciated, thanks
I could not find a way round this problem with activesync, hopefully someone else will help, I gave up and bought a USB2 universal card read/writer for less than a fiver, this is very quick and large files are no problem, also it plugs into the same lead used for the JasJar. Not sure where you are based, I bought from Ebuyer, good price on Viking 1Gb SD as well.
There is a utility called "WM5torage" available that turns your Universal into a card reader. You don't need AS for this but you do need an OS that will recognise a Mass Storage Device.
If you are giong to be transferring files this size regularly then go the card reader route, less wear and tear on the fragile USB port on the Uni.

Hmmm ok i might get a SD card reader then, i guess, along with a 2GB card heh
Is the USB port delicate? It seems pretty sturdy to me?!

No, there is no need to buy a card reader. Just use this application: "WM5torage", as PReDiToR mentioned from above to transfer large files. This small app transforms your Universal into a card reader and it is free. It is similar in function as Softick's Card Export II.
You can download it here: http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=dscript&CODE=showdetails&f_id=1702
Mmmm.. I'm not sure I undestand how WM5torage does anything different that connecting the HTC to a PC as usual and accessing the storage card via the file explorer. Am I missing something?

Ohh ok, i was just worried by the 'fragile USB port' comment!
I have searched on here and read the various threads on SDHC cards and I am still none the wiser
In the Wizard Accessories forum there is a 5-page thread about users experiences with what does and doesn't work - the problem is there is contradicting information. I thought I was getting somewhere with later units supporting SDHC and earlier ones not (serial numbers), however half way through the thread someone with an older Wizard says they have it working.....
Are there any difinitive answers to whether 4GB SDHC cards work in the Wizard, and if so does it need to be a G4, does it need to be manufactured after a certain date etc?
I have two Wizards (s/n: SZ602EE0xxxx and HT544EExxxx), both currently with 1GB SD cards (Danelec I think?). I am reluctant to buy any 4GB cards unless I know they are going to work.
Thanks
Andy
AFAIK some WM6 ROM with build .1921 includes drivers that should support SDHC cards but since I don't have a SDHC card on hand cannot test ...

ok to clarify this, (im going to get flame at least once for this) SDHC cards will only work with devices that have the drivers for SDHC cards. This does not have to do with the hardware but if we cant get the drivers to talk to the hardware there is no support. we have the right hardware but no drivers and if it was a hardware problem then SDHC cards would not be the same as a SD card.
And can someone test that rom (not hopping it works but it might)
[removed by me]
I've got a 4gb SDHC card sitting here, and the latest TNT release (1921 base). Obviously, it does not currently work. Let me know what I need to do to try!

The first page of theloon 7.2 ROM kitchen shows it working. I run this ROM, but I dont have a SDHC yet. I'll post there to see if anyone has had success.
Resurect this thread....
I am desperately running out of SD card space and would like to now 'upgrade' to a 4GB (or bigger?) SDHC card. I would like some testemonials of users who have had sucess with SDHC cards and what Wizard version and ROM you are running.
As I said I am reluctant to just buy a SDHC card and see if it works as it will be a waste of money if it doesn't.
Andy
count me in
just bought a 2gb sd card for 25€ over here but i need more space ^^
transcend sells the fastest sd mini cards as far as i tested them..
from hardware point of view the wizard device can handle this SDHC cards
as they use the same slot and hardware a usb cardreader has..
its just a matter of drivers or maybe just a registrysetting..
my guess its a combination of a new driver with enhancements for SDHC
and some registrysettings...
knowing windows they probably allready implented it in OS at least in WM6
and it be just a question of finding the right driver with the right settings..
my 4gig sdhc is coming in early next week, then I can test..
keep us informed on how it works please .. if it works that is ^^
Read this! It is only a matter of drivers and reg settings. Someone has created a cab with appropriate drivers and reg entries for testing somewhere on the xda forum.

So you can confirm this works? That's all I want. There are LOTS of varying reports on SDHC cards working & not working. I don't want to buy one and then realise it doesn't work. It's all right posting drivers and links to MS updates but that doesn't confirm anything. I want hard evidence.....

I tried it and it doesn't work.
• Support for Video over IP telephony calls
• Support for the Pocket Outlook Object Model (POOM) and ActiveSync in the VoIP Home Screen and VoIP Contacts applications
• Secure Digital (SD) bus driver that supports SDHC specification 2.00 functionality, such as Secure Digital High-Capacity (SDHC) cards
Support for Extended File Allocation Table (ExFAT) and FAT32 on the x86 BIOS Loader, which provides access beyond 2 gigabytes (GB) of hard disk space.
this is probably the issue with ur 4gb card..
the bios of the wizard wont be able to acces beyond 2gb
but...
now that you have this 4gb card can you do us all a favor ?
here is the thing:
if u have a cardreader that reads the card on the pc just put it in the pc
otherwise put it in the wizard and start wm5torage and connect it as a
non-removable class and write enabled and start the thing and connect it to pc..
when connected goto computer and right click My Computer and choose manage.. in that window goto Disk Managment ..
in there you see this drive which is on the sd card, its shown as a drive
rightclick on the part next to it where it shows the volume on the drive
(it says Healty when correct and the driveletter it got assigned)
choose delete partition
now u have a empty flashdisk
format it in fat16 but.. :-> dont give it a name and set it to 2gb and do not assign a driveletter
now there is a space left of <1gb
format this too fat16 no name, no drive letter, no other stuff but plain format
now if all is correct and these two drives are there you can disconnect it.
unplug the cardreader (with the remove hardwarebutton in systray)
or if u got it in your wizard , shut down pc and take wizard out after it shut down
then release the wm5torage driver and close it and remove card and insert it
back again..
u can check for errors with pocket mechanic professional..
little warning though : do not do this with non branded fake 4gb cards as it
renders it useless probably..( these cards that are 2gb and reformated to hold 4gb)

it will work if someone can port wm6 r2 to the wizard
and i had it work with a 4gb sd mini card which wasnt SDHC
the site i bought it doesnt have them anymore ..
it seems it is an "out of specs" sd card hence there not sold here,
but maybe we can find a store that has these cards..
one more thought is that it maybe read the SDHC card as well if we
keep its volume space to a max of 2gb..
multiple volumes on a storage card works fine on a t-mobile stock rom
not tried it on others..
nevertheless ur right about the part that no-one is willing to buy something that doesnt work hence we need to test and try...
or as i would say :
Plug 'n Pray ©
guys, just wait until Monday or Tuesday, you will get a full report
let's start a poll, which ROM should be used for testing
I love my wing but one of the several suckky things about it is the file transfer, if i am transfering a files that is anything bigger han like 5o mb it takes mad long to tranfser from my pc to my phone. And files like movies are impossible to transfer. I was trying to transfer a movie to my phone and even after waiting about 5 hrs. it did not finish the transfer. That basically means that i can't use my phone as video player. That suck, or is there a way that i could speed up the ttransfer speeds, tips tricks hacks, anything is fine. Except i don't want ot go too far with the hacks. Thanks people
Why dont you just pop-in the microSD into its SD adapter and put it into the cardreader? I'm using a sandisk branded microSD and it transfer 1.7GB in <5mins!
For smaller data transfers(<40mb),I use activesync.
I am aware of the solution that you gave me, but the problem is that my computer does not recognize the micro SD card in the SD adopter, which by the way is Sandisk branded and the two came together. Is there a way i can make that work??

I think he meant the phone's built in connection.
^exactly what I meant. A $15 1GB flash drive has USB 2.0, but this $400 phone can't...
yay, my computer recognizes my card, but still no good.
Ok so finally after waiting an hour for my computer to recognize my Micro sd card which was in an sd adopter, it finally did it. But then when i tried to open it it took another 35 minutes to respond. And then it said that the card is'nt formatted and asked me if i wanted to format it. i know that if i format it for my computer all it's previous data will disaper, so what should i do.
There is a possibility that the cardreader doesn´t support the size of your memorycard. For examplae my laptop is equipped with a bulit-in cardreader that supports SD&Memorystick BUT only up to 1GB. Anything above that (for example my 2GB card from my digicam) and I get the same results as you do. Sometimes i isn´t recognized and sometimes it is but extremely slow but I can never write anything to it.
So is there anything i can do about that?

lol.. fast sdhc or sd cards? what for?? Even if the card can transfer 25mb per second, the shift's internal sd card slot will only read at about 5mbps and write at somewhere around 0.8-3mbps. Let's be realistic.
those cards can be usefull when you have a real high speed card reader on an usb 2.0 connection. Or in camera when taking photos in raw mode or making movies in uncompressed mode.
NO chance for improving things too much. Any regular card will do the same for Shift, you may see only small differences.

Actually, theres a couple of threads talking about ReadyBoost already, but still thanks for the idea !
You can read in many threads about Readyboost first not working, then about which cards are compatible.
You're not affialiated to that shop by any coincidence ?
yes, it does improve the performanca for a little bit, but, i'd rather use the sd slot in a more usefull way and disable 2-3 vista services to achieve the same performance.
My shift runs vista and xp in dual boot. When I wanna play or watch movies i swich to xp, otherwise I stay with vista. The shift is a pretty nice game machine too . I currently play starcraft and homeworld 2 on it without any problem. I'll try Kotor and farcry tonight.
In my opinion the split between vista and xp is the best compromise.
