White Screen 8525. - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Im thinking of buying a used 8525 for 125.00 on ebay but the problem is the seller stated that it goes to a blank white screen sometimes. He also included pictures when its working normally. I researched the white screen thing on yahoo and i got mixed answers. I learned that if you buy it from a third party seller (ebay) then you have no warranty (duh). My question is, whats the real deal with the white screen? is it somthing i can fix with a new rom? The other question is, is it worth the 125 price tag, which is saving alot but for a phone that has a possibility of not being able to be fixed. Thanks!

A ROM change won't fix it but there has been some sucess in this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163&highlight=whitescreen
As for a $125, I'm not sure. Mine $1100AUD new. Though if I had the option again, I wouldn't buy one (too many white screens and buttons not working).

My advice is don't buy it. Yes, there are some possible white screen solutions to try, but none are guaranteed. By replacing the the d-pad and possible ribbon connectors you might increase your chances of success but it would be a gamble I would not take.
There are good TyTn's out there, I have one, but to deliberately choose one that has a known and difficult to solve problem I would not advise.
Mike

ok thanks. Ok another question. Honestly, is it safe to buy a 8525? I really dont want a tilt because it has programs i dont need and is expensive, but it seems i read about this white screen alot. what do you guys think?

Nobody can guarantee that it will be perfect. BUT keep in mind that most folk post about their problems. So out of all the thousands of 8525s sold even a few dozen with the white screen issue is a small proportion.
Also, if you buy do it from a proper supplier and do not buy from ebay.
Mike

shoot! could you recomend some good sites that are cheap? I really dont feel like paying an outrageous price. Thanks for the help!

I don't know good sites in your country but hopefully someone in the states can recommend somewhere? I'm not saying all ebay sellers are all trying to palm off problem phones but it is a risk and I have seen quite a few folk that have had bad experience with the white screen issue having bought from there. However maybe someone knows a good / reliable ebay supplier?

I got a Replacement LCD for my 8525 for $39 at WWW.HTCLCD.COM

Cost of a new screen?

Ok How's this for a first post? Some moron managed to knock my 2 week old wizard off the desk while it was charging at work (so not in its case) and has cause a small chip in the screen (screen still works perfectly - just the outter touch panel is damaged). Since no one is owning up to doing it - and my short-sightedness in not taking out insurance on such an expensive phone, I wondered if anyone had any Idea how much T-Mobile would charge to fix this?
I'm assuming it is too late to take out insurance now, so I'm gonna have to shell out for the repair one way or the other - just wondered how much this will set me back.....
Any ideas? Cheers Guys
Oh and no flaming me please - I feel gutted enough as it is!!

You're saying to replace the screen will cost more than £300??
Sorry mate I'm not made of money - that is not a viable solution.

Sorry, but it's your only one!
Hi,
Your house hold insurance should cover it. Either that or take out phone insurance and claim in a few months.
Thanks
B
I am not sure about T-Mobile, but o2 let you take insurance out in the first 2 weeks. Look on the web and if you are too late give them a call..... ask them when you will be billed for the insurance as you cant see it on your first bill and you did ask for it when you bought the phone.
Failing that there are may 3rd party companies that will insure phones/pda's/laptops, google for it and give them a call......

I think you have to replace the whole screen anyway?... maybe not. I dunno.

[email protected]! what an unhelpful post! They are available on ebay for around £120, easy to fit, just be careful the part you buy matches the part number of the original screen - some sellers say the magician screen fits, my supplier says it doesn't.
Richard
Thanks for all your help guys - I did try calling T-Mobile about insurance saying that I though I'd selected it when I bought it online, but they wouldn't budge on letting me insure it after 2 weeks and sounded pretty sceptical from the start :?
I contacted HTC directly and they're quoting £94 to replace the screen and for shipping both ways which I guess is fairly reasonable - especially after the great suggestion of buying a new one at £200+
Just thought I'd update you incase anyone else is as unfortunate as I was.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post contact details for HTC on here - so anyone needing to contact them, just PM me.
Thanks again for the suggestions

That's actually very reasonable considering your warranty remains intact as well. Cheapest price online is now about £95 for the screen alone! HTC will only deal with t-mob/orange branded items from experence though.

anyone know where I can get replacement parts 4 my MDA in the US. sorri to hijack the post but I figure since u are already on the topic of replacment parts I would give it a shot.
I cracked my touchscreen as well. If I can get the part, I think I can do the replacement myself. Anyone know where to get one?

8525 Got Ran-Over ***Pictures Added***

I'm trying gather opinions for my sister on what one might do if their device (8525) got ran over. The lower right corner of the top is smashed a bit, disfigured in the right area where the keyboard slider doesn't open perfectly (but it still opens/closes), the worst damage however, is that while the touch screen is intact - not a scratch, what is underneath has been damaged - all you see is backlight, and ironically, what looks like an image of a tire mark on the bottom of the screen. So, I can't tell if the OS is loading, but the screen lights up in response to the power on button. It will dim after 10 sec's, and get bright upon screen tap.
1) Is this a no-brainer on what parts need to be ordered, and can it be self serviced? If so, what and where would you go?
2) Does this sound like HTC, or PPCTechs, etc. could fix for a reasonable amount?
3) Would you just sell it for parts only on eBay? Then use the money toward the Kaiser/Tilt/8925/et al when/if it comes out?
4) Other?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to offer your opinion.

ppctechs.. htc would probably send it back
dont waste your time with ebay. unless you get a loaner in the meantime and are preordering the 8925 from cingular. let us know what you decide.
Buy a new one...no..wait for the Kaiser and buy that!
I suggested as an option she SELL the 8525 for parts on eBay to offset some of the cost of a new phone, as there are so many people out there that know what they are doing, and can salvage it (ie the battery cover, battery, stylus are fine - and I'm guessing the keyboard and lower internals are fine).
How do you pre-order the 8925 from Cingular/Att? I haven't seen it as an option! She was "this close" to running to CompUSA for the Advantage, but they soldout. Someone suggested the iToy, um, I mean iPhone, but the specs don't compare - and having Push/Exchange is critical. The 8925 really seems to have "all that and more". She'll probably wait for the 8925, unless it isn't released soon to the 9/3 estimation. We'll check into the PPCTechs, and see what they think in the mean time.

oh okay, i didn't fully read your post i guess. selling for parts is a waste of time imo. i say fix the phone via ppctechs and then sell it before the 8925 comes out. use the money to help pay for it.
If she is already hinting at getting new phone, sell this one as broken and use funds for new Kaiser once its available. If you think you can fix it, buy a broken one and swap parts like housing, ribbon cable, etc. If she values the data on it either connect to computer and save what you can in files or try hard reset.
"what looks like an image of a tire mark on the bottom of the screen" sounds like a really cool screen btw, sorry Im not helping am I?
this thread is useless without pictures!

"If she is already hinting at getting new phone, sell this one as broken and use funds for new Kaiser once its available."
--I suggested the idea of PPCTechs, so we'll see. I think she is wavering between fixing and keeping, or selling as parts and getting the Kaiser/8925/Tilt. Getting an upgraded phone through this would take away some of the pain.
"what looks like an image of a tire mark on the bottom of the screen" sounds like a really cool screen btw, sorry Im not helping am I?
--Actually, it is quite cool...she saw it as tree's, I saw a tire track...sorta like the ink blot psychologists use.
Back in the wizard days i bought one that was damaged for $75 off ebay.. I salvaged it out and took the piece i needed and then sold other parts individually and ended up making money... total amount i got for all the parts was around $125...
I don't know how pocketpctechs price their work, but i got my JasJam repaired with them through the i-mate warranty and wasn't too pleased... they didn't fix the issues on top of that they didn't replace the "warranty void if removed" sticker. But i'd believe that they are going ot charge a lot of repair.
well best of luck and i 2nd the request for pics
Pictures are now added at the first post.
An update on her thoughts - if she sells it, is there any way to erase her data first. Also, any opinions on what she might ask as a fair price? This info might help her in deciding what is the best solution.
Thanks for all your help!
selling as is? 50 bucks
I recommend using My Mobiler, it's a remote desktop software where you can remote connect to your PDA using your PC, easy to use and installs itself on your PPC automatically. http://www.pdagold.com/software/detail.asp?s=1493

7501 replacement keyboard?

Hey guys -
I just picked up one of these interesting devices at CompUSA's firesale, and it is in good condition, but for one thing - it seems like the KB was dropped and has a small dent. Now, it is totally cosmetic, but something I would like to eventually fix (cost permitting).
I have done some searching, but haven't found anything about a replacement part. Anyone have any experience with this?
I haven't seen one mention of a replacement keyboard, but replacement cases for the main unit are available online. Have you tried calling HTC?
i saw a replacement dopod k/b for 150 usd.. cant remember where, just came up through extensive googling for a replacement body

I agree, call HTC, they are usually pretty good about sorting out this sort of thing.

I saw your post and took a quick gander myself. I did find the Dopod version; only complaint is it is silver and not black..
http://cnn.cn/shop/dopodo2-u1000-athena-platform-c-138_416.html
But, it is an option if HTC can't help (going to be calling in a few; lunch break.
I will let you know know what they say. Thanks!
Well, thanks for the advice guys, but THC was a no-go. I called both the general support number, and the warrenty/repair number given to me by support, and came up short both ways. They flat out said they don't sell the part alone, and that she (nice lady at least) did not know where i could look. I guess i may consider the dopod version as backup; thankfully, this is a fully usable unit even without the keyboard; I will just have to be careful as it could scratch my body; something I don't want...
Just out of curiosity, which store did you get it from?

for the amount a replacement will cost you might be as well to send back your cosmetically damaged one and buy a new athena elsewhere.
Many of us prefer to use the device without the keyboard. Some may be willing to sell it or swap with you for a reasonable price perhaps?

Depends on the price, but sure, I would entertain offers.

Spidered screen

So my wife dropped my g1 and spidered the screen but the phone works just fine. As far as I can tell it's just the top digitizer so my question is about this part from bay and if it is what I need to buy.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LCD-Touch-S...Accessories&hash=item335bc7b7c8#ht_3178wt_694
Thanks for your help guys.
Looks like the correct part. Are you sure they arent any cheaper on ebay?
I just looked briefly to try and get an idea on what i need. I will be getting the best one for the best price and for the shortest shipping i just needed to have you guys look at the part in order to be sure i was getting the right one.
Good luck actually getting it. Ebarf is loaded with scammers and ripoffs.
I suggest finding a legit place to buy it from.
Ask around in the marketplace, also try people with bricked G1's who will sell individual parts.

Aria Screen Replace

So i just ordered a new screen for my Aria because my dumbass dropped it walking past security at my job, wehere i have to show them its my phone so they know im not stealing anything because my job handles a wide variety of products, cracked it, i dont wanna deal w/ att on it because A) i have my phone perfectly how i like it and B) i dont wanna redo anything i have done, my question is there a How to video so i can follow the video, and if there is not a video up yet, would anyone be interested in me taking pictures of the process for anyone else so i can just make my own how-to thread.
there is a good guide on how to change the screen already on the forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733596
thanks for that! i wasnt sure about if there was a good guide out there for it yet!
Hey quick question. Where did you get the replacement screen for the Aria?
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/htc-aria-touch-screen-digitizer-glass-replacement.html
I havent actually ordered it yet, cause of financial delay, but you can also find them on Ebay from Hong Kong, i dont know where this one is coming from.
I broke mine today... luckily it was only the glass near the optical trackball.
Why are these replacements so expensive?
sheesh. the place i took my wifes too only cost $100 total.
CNN.cn has the replacement screen for $45, but they are backorder, so no telling when you might actually be able to get one...
