looking at buying a prophet.. couple of questions - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

I'm looking at buying a prophet, and the description says that the " Phone randomly crashes turning the screen either completely light or completely dark and require a reseat of the battery to work again. This phone is considered un-repairable by the manufacture. Phone also has unsupported customized Windows Mobile 6.1 firmware."
could this be a software issue or do you think a hardware. possibly a ribbon cable, are there parts available for these? thanks

Hello Quintman and welcome to the forum.
I have no idea where you got the information in your post but as someone who has used a Prophet for 2 years I can tell you that the phone is perfectly stable, specially if you stick with the original WM 5 ROM.
I still use and love it but I would not recommend buying this phone today unless you are looking for something cheap.
It is fairly outdated compared to most models, and has no GPS, 3G, and a slow processor.
I suggest yo post your needs and budget in the general section so people could advise on a better model.

lol i just didnt want to say where it was so everyone would bid on it. it is from ebay. i just didnt know if maybe the rom someone flashed was causing the screen issue or if a ribbon cable came loose or something worse. i was just thinking of buying it to play with it. I currently have a wizard that im selling (hopefully today) so im looking into something else. i love the different models with gps and that can take sdhc, that way i could sell both my gps unit and my mp3 player, but i think those are out of my price range (unless i somehow score one on ebay.) i cant decide whether to take a chance on the ebay one. check your pm

Bad News..T-Mobile Ameo vulnerable HDD....

I have received news from a tester of the T-Mobile Ameo, that it will be delayed in its release, due to the Units displaying significant problems in battery drain in connection to the mechanical HDD. Apparently the units will be recalled to HTC to have the HDD replaced with flash memory to overcome the issues encountered by many users. Not sure how accurate this information is, but I personally know and trust the tester in question. Whilst he reports that the X7500 is blisteringly fast, he also states that the battery consumption is so appalling that one would not get through a days use of the unit, and that stated talk time of the X7500 is currently well below what is stated/expected.
He also indicated that HTC are considering recalling all units already sold in their various guises. Suppose we will have to wait and see. Looks like a few months of delay at the least with a probability with the Ameo shipping with WM6 Professional.
After all that waiting. Crying or Very sad Well I'd rather buy a fully functioning bit of hardware. This always was a point of weariness on my behalf due to my experience of the SGH-i300 with a mechanical HDD, which was ultimately one of the main reasons for getting rid of it......power consumption!!
I have recently changed the title of this thread due to fellow member, Wu, pointing out to me that the old title was confusing. Thankyou Wu.

I will phone my HTC contact this wednesday and see what he says. He is the senior enginner in HTC Head office so the infor he gives me should be pretty accurate.
For the battery part, i am very happy about it, the user of DOPOD has reported that the battery is very good, personally, i turn on Bluetooth all day, device is connect to 3G 24 hours and the screen is never off. So even when i attach my keyboard to DOPOD, my screen is still on. This allow me to use my device for whole day without charging.
I am very happy about the battery.
With WM6, i thought some member here has report Athena will com with WM6 upgrade when it's available, i think that might be true, because that's what i heard in 3GSM as well.
Ok, i have just spoke to my HTC contact, he say he hasn't hear anything about recalling the HTC device, he wasn't sure about Amoe since that invlove with the T-mobile, but for HTC Advantage, he say there is a delay on the release date, the reason beening ROM not totally complete yet, he say the Rom has some bugs which need to be fix. But it should be out in april sometimes.
Funny enough, he also say last week a senior enginner from DOPOD came by to HTC office to meet with their manager, he is guessing HTC is calling for help from DOPOD, since Dopod have finish their Rom already.
For the battery part, not sure about Ameo, but they have run benchmark on the battery for testing, and the result are very good, but at the end, it will depend on how you use your device.
I have ask him to keep an eye on this info, and will report it here if i hear anything more
All X7500 still being released..too much invested..
I wasn't happy with what I heard and pressed my friend for more info. According to his sources (since Thursday, when I last spoke to him), HTC will now most probably NOT recall the units they have branded for T-Mobile and their Sister company Dopod.
The problem apparently is not so much the consumption side of the HDD (even though it does drain heavily compared to SD cards), but the way the HDD was implemented. It is not very shock proof at all. Supposedly vigorous shaking has resulted in 'knocking the HDD out' as I was told, meaning what exactly is still unclear in the sense that it will either become dislodged or stop functioning.
The problem is the way HTC integrated the HDD into the X7500. Apparently they stripped it down before attaching/soldering and fitting it into the housing, resulting in its physical instability. So not a hardware fault, but a design floor which may cause a hardware fault if the unit should be knocked or even suffer a bump (whilst using GPS) in a bumpy car. And there are supposed to be some hardware issues too, but not severe enough enough to stop its release. So we'll be the paying guinea pigs, while HTC perfect the next model which will definitely come with Flash memory and WM6.
Bottom line is that too much has been invested in the X7500, so its release will go on even it is a few weeks late. Taiwan already sell the Dopod, whilst Netherlands and Germany are already selling the Ameo. T-Mobile UK should be following soon as will the Advantage, but if you're buying.....expect some problems and an updated version by the end of the year, as Sony have plans of releasing a UMPC similar in appearance to the X7500 and HTC will be making serious design changes to their next UMPC-look-alike WM6 device.

I will try to confirm that with my HTC source, i think it make sense, HTC are not too good about writing ROM, that explain why they are asking for help from DOPOD. Anyway, i must say my DOPOD machine is running very smoothly, battery is amazing, and i have successfully change my today screen to total english, therefore i think DOPOD is a better option now for those who don't want the black one.

Congrats your ur Dopod wu.
I'm glad you're having no issues with it so far. I'll be getting the Ameo despite its supposed shortcomings + insurance!! So what the hey?!?!
Agreed, HTC are new to ROM building, but they do now own Dopod, so I very much doubt that their ROM will lag behind Dopods especially if Dopod have to help them perfect the HTC ROM.
Who cares anyway? Soon enough we will have access to the most stable and fastest ROM and all versions of the X7500 will run exactly the same, as the hardware is the same.
My only concern now is the stablility of the HDD.
yes, Dopod is very better than Ameo and advantage
but problem is color it is silver
can paint it and change color to black or change the case?
I change my 7710 from silver to black with changing case
can it do with athena?

Arya...no disrespect intended, but what are you getting the X7500 for? It just seems that you are comparing so many devices with it, to the point of sounding confused. No device is perfect, nor will Man be able to make one.
You simply have to decide on which device meets your requirements according to market availability. For me it's the Ameo. Other devices due out soon have some specs that equal or better the Ameo in certain areas, but fall short in other areas.
Ameo all the way and if I encounter any of the problems I have been informed of, it will be insured and still under guarantee, so I won't worry unnecessarily.
So my advice to you would be to not think X7500 first, but what are my needs? Then decide on which device best suits you.

That is very well say, agree with you there. Let's see if HTC can come up with a stable ROM (with the help from DOPOD). Hopefully they make their ROM right so they don't damage the HDD. After Advantage is out, we can then compare all the ROM and choose the best one and install.

This is funny, I already own the T-Mobile Ameo for almost two weeks now, even before you posted this.
1. the battery life is pretty impressive for such a device, you can get through a working day with a couple of phone calls and internet surfing/playing around with the unit and the battery still shows 30% power left.
For some people this battery life may not be good enough, for me it is OK since I always charge my phone(s) over night anyway.
2. I "smashed" the Ameo several times on my office desk, on my bed, on my office chair, I carried it around all the time, even running with it in my pocket.
No problems at all with the HDD, especially since it uses a sensor which detects "acceleration"(drops, movements, etc.), so I highly doubt that there would be trouble, even if it isn't mounted properly.
Of course there will be an updated Ameo/X7500 by the end of this year, HTC puts out a lot of new units on the market, I would be surprised if they didn't.
I highly doubt that HTC would "allow" T-Mobile to acquire and sell defective Ameos, T-Mobile could easily make them responsible for defective units and this could cost HTC a lot of money.
I don't say this isn't true but I know how rumours and gossip is travelling the internet and although sometimes there is some truth behind all this talk, I would take it with a grain of salt.

Oh boy...the HTC X7500 is the SAME THING, there is no hardware difference between the X7500 and the Ameo/U1000.
Since the X7500 isn't even on the market yet, all these speculations are what they are...speculations or most likely GOSSIP.

Man, it's not GOSSIP, i was one of the tester for HTC Advantage, i have been notify by HTC that the Rom has serious Bug on HDD handle. I also have contact of one of the most senior engineer in HTC. It has been confirm Advantage is being push back, just don't know how late it will be. If lucky, with the help of DOPOD, they might still get it out on time.
We all know there is no hardware difference, it's the ROM which makes the Advantage being push back........
p.s. mackaby007, you should change the post title, it's making some people confuse.

As nicely as you try to put it P996, what you say implies that either I, or whoever my source is are either foolish in speaking of these things or blatantly lying. It certainly is not gossip, as I have not heard this anywhere else. The fact that you nor anyone else that has bought it and yet hasn't experienced this problem, does not detract that some testers have come to be aware of this design/assembly flaw in the Athena that COULD cause the problems mentioned in my earlier thread and talks had taken place with T-Mobile UK with regards to returning the units (possible recalls for Germany & Netherlands). The fact that this will not be taking place can be attributed to certain facts; i.e.
1) Too much has already been invested in a product that is not guaranteed to go wrong.
2)The Athena is NOT faulty, it' implementation of the HDD unit is subject to vulnerability due to the way it was stripped down and mounted in the overall casing. NOT faulty.....hence NO Recall...Get IT P996??
3) Furthermore I sincerely doubt that you are truthful in your account of how many times or the extent to which you have knocked your brand new device about. Yes I'm implying that you are lying by exaggerating, to prove a point.
4) I'm still getting the Ameo despite the only vulnerability reported to me.
5) I was merely sharing pertinent information to anyone who like me wants to make well informed decisions about future expensive purchases...whether we like the negatives or not.
6) As stated before...(for those too lazy to read through all the Athena posts there aren't that many at present)...T-Mobile UK have not yet released the Ameo and the tester/testers in question are from the UK and extremely well qualified and known to me personally, so I trust what they tell me, but not without question.
7) The point wu raised about HTC's ROM damaging the HDD is a totally separate issue, but confirms that HTC are well aware of problems with their HDD, be it soft or hardware related.
Lastly it is very easy to look at the past posts of every member..therefore if you suspect a persons integrity, you should at least have the decency to check them out before implying that another member is a gossip-monger. Wanker!!

nicely say mackaby007, agree with you there.
Since i haven't tested the T-mobile Amoe, i don't know anything about it.
The HDD issue HTC Advantage is having is a software problem, to do with how their ROM handle the Micro Drive. So don't worry, when it comes out, it should have no problem, that's what they are working on now.

Thanks Wu. I agree with you completely and I've changed the title of the thread as you advised.

Shall I buy Orange M3100?

Hi,
now I have an old Nokia 6230 in combination with Mio P550. Nokia is pretty old, but so far ok for me (only thing I really hate is that I cannot sort my contact list in groups as I want to) and I'm using Mio mainly for navigation (i-Go) and synchronization of my calendar and tasks. Now the time has come to change my mobile phone.
New phone will be from Orange (under contract) and consider two possibilities.
1. sell Nokia and Mio and buy Orange M3100 (SK)
2. stick with Mio and buy Nokia 6233 (or maybe E50, but not sure I want Symbian, WM is better)
Pos:
1. all-in-one, WM platform, keyboard
2. built-in GPS, all my phones are Nokia, so I have all equipment I need, price (difference is 450euro, but something will come back if I sell Mio)
Neg:
1. no working built-in GPS, need to buy BT GPS receiver, price
2. two devices and Nokia has now really troubles to get out some no-bug fw for this phone
I have read all topics related to M3100 on this forum. This is great device, but there is big chance, that something will go wrong (e.g. loosing GSM signal and muting issue). I'm confident I will not update the ROM in this device in first few months because Orange will not allow me to do it without loosing warranty.
So the big question. Shall I buy M3100? How big is the chance I will have really big issues? Are there some S/N ranges, revisions, that I should not buy?
Thanks for any info .
buy it
.
Very tempting to say
Don't buy it!
But that would just put you back to a bit of a dilemma.
Bear in mind that the majority of posts here are from those that have had problems. Very few people make posts to say hey my e-mail is working or I always manage to take a good picture etc etc. So reading here would make you believe there is hardly a device that works properly.
Most folks probably get along just fine, but I would say that there are a number of tweaks and settings that should be done as standard on this device and then a full backup so you can restore at the drop of a hat as and when you do face a problem.
Your other consideration might be to wait for the Kaiser say, though that could be a while and initial pricing could be very high. Also newly released devices are a challenge for the ROM Gurus but everyday users should wait for several months after initial release and problems are ironed out.
I've got mine working just fine now, but I still get the odd freeze every couple of weeks - I backup a lot so not a great problem in my view.
Mike
Thanks mikechannon.
I'm around on Internet for some time, so I know that mainly complaitns can be found on boards. Satisfied users are not searching boards like this to tell us that everything is ok. They have no need. That is why I asked "How big is the chance I will have really big issues?". Guys here are working with this device on advanced level and can tell me more in few words as an regular user.
At this moment I'm 80% sure I will take it. I feel in me something like "dream comes true" . And I don't know why, it's missing working build-in GPS and big screen with 640x480 (joke). I have still one week to make final decision. Today I sent email to Orange to know more about the device (ROM version, etc.), hopefully Orange will responde quickly. If there is big chance (nothing is for 100%) nothing will brake down I will buy it
I decided to wait couple of months since I was not entire sure.
After two weeks I finally received reply from Orange. There will be probably no official update to WM6 and I'm not allowed to use any unofficial firmware without loosing warranty (so nothing new). There was only one useful information in entire email. Software in M3100 is version 14.123.8.783. But I was not able to find anything with this number. Is this real or Orange sent me something that is not useful?
I have my M3100 for four months now without any issues. You can check these faulty batches here. Only problem I have had so far is low in-call volume, but I think that is dependant on the OS. If you are sure that is what you need then go for it. Veľa šťastia.
I went from a xda 2i to hermes and not regretted it. I plucked up nerve to install black 2.0 (very happy with it) and if it goes wrong just put original wm5 rom back on it.
As for the gps thing, ebay has some cheap bt recievers and you can use them on any other phone you buy in the future (on my 4th phone with same reciever)
Orange SPV 3100 straight out of the box isn't that great.
I've totally customised mine, and everything works great. My biggest problem were the usb headphones/handsfree, which I have now hacked to accept 3.5mm headphones.
The biggest problem, which is out of my hands, is the camera. Completely useless at night time/poor lighting. Other than that, I am very happy... size, weight, battery life and speed are just fine.
Go for it if you think you can customise it.
(BTW, I am using the OS straight out of the box, so no firmware updates (although I will be unlocking it soon))
if you can wait a little bit then i'd look at getting the kaiser once that's out.
if not get the 3100 now and with the help of this place you'll get it working the way it should. imo wm6 is a must
KarhU - what was the original ROM version in your device?
DeanJ - well, I can wait (till Xmas) . But what will be the price and will Orange have its own clone?

I do not know for sure (it did not stay there for long ), but I think it was that ROM (it has the same Radio I had and the same bootloader as well, also OS version is the same) and this Ext ROM. All the versions of Hermes available in Slovakia are not localized.

well its expected to be released june/july by htc from the last i read but if orange will brand it who knows, it seams a logical step and it just depends what built in gps and a thiner device means to you really. as for the price it'll prob be the same as the 3100 when it was first released, i dont know what that was as i got my hermes from t-mobile
Out of the box experience for the m3100...had to kid myself everything was running ok, it was slow and pretty sluggish, not amazing by any stretch! Quite a bit faster upgrading to WM6, however you're always on your toes anticipating the next crash/freeze!
I would recommend getting one. I always have mine with me and I couldn't be without it. It really is the best device on the market!!!!
Had my M3100 since December last year. Best handset I have ever had from Orange. Add this to www.xda-developers.com and you have powerfull combination. I have tried just about all the english WM5 roms and most of the WM6 ones too. If you follow all the tips, instructions & advice etc in the WIKIs you can't go far wrong! Take time to read and search! I am currently running Black Version 2.0, personal and company IMAP e-mail setup on it, along with TomTom 6 and various other apps. Bottom line, go get one!!!!
i have been using a 3100 now for months with no problems at all,,,i have upgraded to black version 2.0 with i only did for fun and everything is great...
go buy one now !!!
So, I have an offer for SPV. The s/n is starting with 357. How old is it? In wiki I found only 6xx and 7xx.
It's home . Now I need to search for some good applications to work with phone, contacts and messages .

Possible switch to Omnia, advice needed!!!

Ok guys, sorry I have been M.I.A. on the forums, but Medical school caught up with me and my Blackstone. After using it for a month, I decided to use the phone that I received from T-Mobile "Samsung Behold" and got used to the little device, thus I havent used my blackstone for a while. Now, it has come to my attention, that I may be possibly wanting to sell my Blackstone for the money due to my financial situation right now. I would be selling it with 3 cases and a pack of stylus, but that is beside the point right now. I have been looking around at the juicy phones coming out and the Samsung Omnia caught my attention. Granted I would have to import it once again, what exactly is the difference between the Omnia and HD? I will wait for the G2 to come out and check it out and, if I have the money, may look into the Omnia. Any advice from you all is always appreciated. I would wait for the Huawei G3, but nothing concrete has come up lately.
just google for a comparison. like this
I got both phones.
The biggest difference that will hit you after you hold both in your hands is the quality of the phones. The resolution of the HD makes the Omnia look like a ancient phone.
The screen is obviously smaller but even the WQVGA can't improve the look of the screen.
You will run into more stuck pixel problems with the Omnia, i held 2 different Omnias in my hand and both had more than 5 stuck pixels each.
The fact that 3.5mm doesn't exist will piss you off initially but you will probably get used to it. I simply can't stand it though, i prefer the freedom of having the 3.5mm. The other reason that the USB connection for the PC is the same as the headphone port, in other words, it's all proprietary will probably peeve you off a bit.
Other than that, be sure to be shocked at the difference in quality (not phone quality but display quality).
It's close to half the price though, so big choices.
Ok thanks guys for the info. I think what I will do, I go to a verizon wireless store and mess with the Omnia there. Since the Gsm version that would have to be imported is the same as the CDMA version here in the U.S., it should give me an easy comparison
Had an Omnia for 5 months!!!
What a peice of junk.
TomTom dosn't run properly without 3rd party apps.
Yhe screen is rubbish, slightest bit of muck and its got a scratch.
Wireless functions, including WiFi, GSM, GPRS etc are crap. I never held a connection on my wifi at home for more than 30 seconds (and no theres nothing wrong with my router)
Best thing I did was swap it for a Blackstone.
It Just works, what more can I say
Don't buy the Omnia, stick with the Blackstone. IMHO its the best phone on the market at this time
Alchopop
Thanks guys for the opinions, thats why I love this place lol. I'm am out of town right now, but when I get back, I will swing by a Verizon shop and play with the Omnia for a while. Please keep the opinions coming

[Q] Is this Trophy salvageable?

So, I'm looking for a Windows Phone 7 device to have a play around with, not looking to spend too much as it's just going to be a toy really, and I came across this Trophy going cheap on ebay.
The phone doesn't boot at the moment, and the seller says "It either will turn on to the white screen with the htc logo on and wont go any further or you can turn it on to the bootloader and connect it to the pc, but thats it".
Does anyone know if it can be resurrected? I'm quite techy but I'm not a dev, as long as I have instructions I'm quite comfortable flashing roms and such, I used to have a HTC Hero that I rooted and flashed custom roms etc to, so I'm used to all that stuff. I've attached some pictures of the screen, if anyone can tell me whether it's bricked or not, and if it can be fixed (and possibly point me toward some instructions on what to do!) I would appreciate it.
I personally wouldn't buy it since you don't know exactly what happened with it. But it looks to me like maybe the GoldCard method would work...
...even though you might not have enough information to retrieve from the phone to create an actual GoldCard, you might be able to flash it with the original ROM using an Y-cable and an external card reader.
What is his asking price?
It's on an auction ending in 2 days, no bids yet so its still on the opening price of £20. I reckon it's worth a go as long as it doesn't go above £30
Of course, as long as it hasn't been opened I could just send it to HTC for a warranty repair, but where's the fun in that?
You could ask ansar on our forums if he helps you

[Q] Buying a HD 2 - New or used?

Being both amazed by the sh**load of OSes the HD2 can run and in need of a smartphone, I decided to buy one. Just one thing I am not sure about - new or used? What I am most concerned about is the state of the NAND memory - knowing that it has a limited lifespan or reads and writes, I am somewhat afraid of getting one that is close to it's death. Also, what about TRIM availability? Wouldn't want to run into a unit that's slowed down to a speed of a crippled snail just to find out that there's no remedy.
New if can & price good, used is indeed risky & most have bad repairs & faults.
You can find good used but it hard these days.
good luck finding a new five year old phone now, though. I'd choose something else, from experience I know once you get into the mod scene of this phone you get to know it's not really that great nor alive at this moment.
still new available (can buy in my local phone mall) but would only buy if price cheap.
Would only buy one if really need cross platform support or need run WM6.5.
Other option is buying one with dead or cracked digitizer & fitting new digi as broken but clean HD2 can be had for around 22USD & Digitizers are 12USD.
@Spaqin - what'd be the problem with picking up a new HD2? Some new ones still sold on eBay, so...
@Mister B - I am a bit afraid of digitizer replacements, as the last time I did it (on my previous phone - Samsung Galaxy Ace-i GT-S5830i) the result was... well, functional, but barely - registering touches when not being touched at all, or not responding at all. Also, the reason I'm picking this phone is that I don't have much money to invest, and I like the freedom of OS choice - on any other phone that I know of, I'm pretty much locked to whatever OS it has.. Just the idea of flashing whatever OS I feel like got me excited. If anyone can recommend anything similar at a similar price, I'm open to suggestions.
@Spaqin
Up to really then on what available to you in your region.
eBay new or used is iffy unless incredibly good feedback.
I been lucky with a few used ones picked up from local phone shop that took them as part exchange when doing upgrades.
Certainly odd good ones come on eBay but most are same tat going round so be careful.
I still use HD2 & WM6.5.5 & it perfectly decent device.
To be honest best way of buying a bargain is with broken digitizer, I bought one from ebay with all original accessories & box & very good condition besides dead digi plus it still had void stickers in tact, repair is cheap but certainly need experience at least one before you good at it.
Nothing else has same cross platform support.
Certainly a nice device if price & condition good. happy hunting .

No hope of buying one locally, new ones ain't available in stores anymore, and even used ones don't seem to pop up over here - the closest thing I've ever seen is a HD Mini.
I think I'll eventually buy a new one on eBay, as both sellers that have nice offers have 98,8% positive rep, but just in case - what about the NAND? Is the stuff I listed in the first post a real issue or just my imaginary concerns?
Also, bit offtopic: what could have been my mistake when changing the digitizer on the Ace?

I certainly don't like buying them when think well used on Android, a lot of flashing can indeed bring up nand issues. Other issue with HD2s pushed hard on android is BGA issues with cpu due to higher running temps.
Expect your digitizer was due to flex connection or rough handling, to do hd2 digitizer really well does require experience, the first one will never be best & without precise strip down & handling many things can be damaged ...
Any advices for replacement HD2?
Thanks.
You can use swappa.com to try to find one (please do not use this site for buying/selling as it is against our rules). They should go pretty cheap as how old they are.
The HD2 was my all time favorite device and I spent a lot of time on these forums in the HD2 section, flashing different builds of WM, WP, and Android daily. But the hardware is so old that it really makes no sense except for nostalgia.

There is still android development occurring, we already have good kitkat builds, a new 3.0 kernel and people are working on lollipop ATM. I suppose it depends on the price really.
Tempted to dust off your old HD2 orangekid?

I am actually. Hands down best device ever.
I haven't done anything with it in a few years actually, but maybe I'll see how recent dev stuff is on it.
nice

if you can find new that is beyond belief and really really GOOD! If refurbished, be aware of those... Good mint condition used unit may be the best bet... good luck.
Of course a new one. If it used, who knows what the previous owner did to it.
