Poor connectivity after SP1 upgrade - Shift General

First let me say that many of you that post here are much more technically savvy than I am, so please be gentle.
I upgraded my shift to with SP1 last night, and it seems as if my connection keeps connecting/disconnecting while I am using my sim card connection. The signal seems to constantly be shifting between edge, 3G, and HSDPA. The fact that the signal from the carrier is constantly shifting protocols is not really unusual, but the constant connecting and disconnecting seems to be new (since SP1).
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a known issue? Is there a fix?
Thanks
Dean

Yes. We talked about it in two other threads. I did many things and some of them worked. Try to disable USB port on activesync (WM Side).....

Thank you for the info. I am not able to find where to disable. My WM side is still like it came out of the box BTW.

mm, ok. then you should think about enable full WM and perform that tweak (and many others)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=378234

Well, I made the WM modification, and I went into activesync and unchecked the box next to "synchronize all PCs using this connection".
Was this the right place? If so, it didn't fix my issue, but I am not sure if this is what you meant for me to do or not.
Thanks again.

Hi. Yes, that what I meant. Have you disabled same option in Vista side too?

Thank you again.
I looked at Activesync in the CP,and didn't see where to disable it. I did see a couple of assocations there, but I didn't make any changes.
Is this the correct place to look or do I need to look someplace else?

OK... I gave up. I un-installed SP1 and everything (that I use) is back to working normally. I hope I don't have issues when I want to re-install the SP.
I did leave the more opened up version of WM6 in place though.

Grrrr. Don't really want to give up myself but I can't find any solution to this. I also disabled USB connections but still no luck.

After I removed SP1, my connection starting working ok, but I had several other issues, the worst of which that the computer would not connect again after being woke up, and it would lock up on shut down.
I reinstalled the entire operating system... I hated to, but I hadn't installed but a few programs, and I felt now was the best time.
The weird part for me was that my WM6 modification was still in tact. I didn't expect that.

That issue happens to me with and without sp1. Not always, 20% of times. Specially if the device was suspended or hibernated a long time:Sometimes when I resume the system It doesnt connect. Looking at the events viewer It seems there was a problem restoring the usb connection (It hanged) so I cant turn off Vista but Keeping pressed the power button. I hope Microsoft and/or HTC solves that problem soon

I had never had any problems with the 3G/HSDPA copnnectivity until I upgraded to SP1. Weird though, after I upgraded on Monday I restarted and tested (as I knew some of you had had issues) and all was fine. However when I booted up last night I had the connection reset every minute as some of you have reported.
Has anyone who has upgraded to SP1 NOT had these connectivity problems on the VISTA side? Perhaps this would help us work out what is different on these installs....

I haven't got any problem with the connection, all my connection works perfectly before and after i install sp1

I won't be installing SP1 again until I see clear evidence that this issue is resolved.
BTW, after SP1, If I left my Shift sitting on my desk it would never loose connection. But if I used it anywhere else, it would connect and disconnect and eventually quit working. I am talking about the radio connection. I never tried the wifi connection after I installed SP1.
Everything seems to be back to normal now since I did a complete re-install. I am gong to wait as long as it takes before I try SP1 again.

That's interesting you say that. The first day after SP1 it was on my desk and I had no problems. The problems started when I was using it sitting up on my hotel bed moving it around. Then toady I'm in the office, its on my desk and no problems again. Mmmmm not sure how this could make a difference but it is odd. Very odd.

OK, I'm now typing this on the WM side while SP1 uninstalls on the Vista side. Daniel - thanks for your solution, it does seem to work but my OCD won't alow me to accept it until the bug is fixed properly or we can work out why it seemingly affects some users and not others. I will contact HTC tomorrow and see if they are aware.
Have the people who it has not affected liberated their shift?
Have they done something to disable USB connection as has Daniel?
Either way it really annoyed me - the S in SP1 is for sh*t as far as I'm concerned.

I contacted HTC 2 weeks ago asking for a solution but they havent contacted me by now. I think some situation makes NDIS shared usb connnection and an activesync connnection fight for the same usb connection. Some of the actions I exposed befored solved the situation for me. Proobably most of the people wont have the problem beacause They will never connect snapvue with vista (usbtools). Maybe Its a problem for some of the people who converted snapvue on wm6....

Yes that sounds likely. In this case I assume hard resetting WM6 to take it back to SnapVue would solve the problem also.
If anyone has had no problems as we suggest after using uSBtools and/or liberate please post here!

I've never had any of the problems that you've described in this thread... but then I've never installed SP1.

Solution for Activesync crash/freezing Wizard after re-Sync!

Hi. This has worked for me, and solved a massive problem. Hope it helps someone else too.
Step 1:
Ensure you are trying to fix the same problem as I was by looking at the symptoms, which were:
- HTC Wizard synchronizes OK when you plug it in the first time
- It stays in sync if you leave it plugged in
- If you unplug it and then plug it back in at any time later, XDA goes s-l-o-o-o-w and then freezes and will NOT re-sync
- If you unplug it and soft reset before reconnecting then it's fine
Essentially, the Wizard was requiring a soft reset between every connection to the USB cable, or it would crash and require a reset anyway!
These issues have been discussed in about 10 threads on this board, and on pretty much every other resource for Wizards and Pocket PC devices on the net. I was, however, totally unable to find something like this which directly addressed the problem.
Step 2:
Download a program called Dr. TCP from here: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
Run it to open a dialog box with loads of fields with strange techy names... no, i didn't understand it either. However, I've been searching the net for days and I found an article here: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;504222574;fp;2;fpid;1277378924 which told me how to work the numbers out...
In the bottom drop-down box, select "Windows Mobile-based Device" and enter 1492 in the box next to that. That's your maximum "MTU".
Here are the settings which work for me (from the top). If i don't mention a setting, I didn't change it!
Tcp Recieve Window: 261360
Dial Up (RAS) MTU: 1492
Path MTU Discovery: Yes
Save and Exit Dr. Tcp.
Step 3:
You need to open "Network Connections"... in XP, that's Start > Connect To > Show All Connections. I'm sure you can find it yourself. Anyway there should be an icon called "Local Area Connection (x)" with "Wireless Mobile-based Device" written in grey underneath.
Right click on that and select DISABLE. This will close your USB connection to your Wizard so those MTU settings can be applied.
Now unplug your Wizard from its cable. Here, I tried right clicking on the connection and selecting "Enable", but it just errored. So you need to unplug it.
Step 4:
Reconnect and see what happens. I am now happily disconnecting and reconnecting as many times as i like and it just keeps on synchronising itself. MAMMA MIA!
If this solves your nasty "i need to reset every time I disconnect" problems then please post here to say so. If it doesn't work then post here also, I guess. If this is a solution for you then credit for this is not mine - it's just the sum total of a lot of searching across this and other forums, websites and message boards. THANKS!
not working
These steps did not work for me.
I still have to reset the device otherwise I get this message after about 5 minutes.
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
It appears to be only a problem syncing as I can still explore the device.
well...
...that's depressing. I genuinely thought that would work for other people too.
Did you read that PCWorld article I linked to? it explains how I got those numbers... they could be different for you, perhaps?
I'll keep thinking...
I did not look at the article. I'm having other issues trying to get my 2 computers synced with my mobile device http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=234189. Once I get those resolved I can try some different things.
On my home computer I am only synchronizing favorites and files and it doesn't appear to be a problem.[/url]
Oh right ok. I read your other post too, but I only have 1 PC for home and work so i can't help with that.
Has anyone else tried this?
I am no longer having the problem since I fixed my other sync issue (multiple computers issue). I had reinstalled activesync and did a hard reset on my device so maybe something else got cleared up. I am also having much better luck with the way my device is running. Before I was getting frequent slowdowns and lockups. I am a much happier customer and will be sticking with my cingular 8125. I just love all the features, but the activesync issues and slowness was starting to get to me. I'm so glad it is all behind me now and I can start to really enjoy the thing. Although I have yet to connect my bluetooth headset, that may have caused me issues too. Sorry I couldn't be more help testing this out.
I and a work college have had this problem on both our systems and found that it was being caused by Avantgo.
It would work fine and sync every time for days until we installed Avantgo.
After these we both had the symptoms you describe in the first post until we did a hard reset and re installed everything except Avantgo, it was then fine again. As a test I then reinstalled it and it started not syncing again, my college who has not reinstalled it has had no further problems.
I have now been running for 3 weeks with no problems and no Avantgo.
If you have it installed it may be worth trying it without for a wile and see if it helps.
Didn't work for me. Still no connection when plugging in for the 2nd time. MTU value changes back to blank when opening the Dr.TCP again, the other values are ok though. But thanks anyway for the hints!
Greetings,
Andreas
Didn't work for me neither...
just to check (i know this sounds daft) but you did DEFINITELY press the SAVE button in Dr TCP before you pressed the EXIT button? can't imagine why it wouldn't store the data.
aaaaaaaaanyway i guess it's not the ubersolution i thought it was
Now I thought I had this working 100% using this hack (It was on a clean install of WM5 however so this may have been why it worked). Anyhow, it stopped working again after I installed PocketWeather ... now locks up whenever I connect....
I wonder if it is 3rd part s/w causing some of the problems with AS? Is it down to the scheduled update in PocketWeather or simply hooks into the ConnectionManager / ActiveSync from apps looking to see if a network connection exists....
I think some more investigation is required ... or perhaps I will flood MS with 1000's of emails telling them how flakey their software is *(Though I think they already know that)*
Any updated? I'm having this same problem, except my device won't connect at all! Even after a reset. It connected once and that was it.
Hi Silentz,
sure, I saved the settings. I'll try the ActiveSync clean install-method and report the results. 'Hope that MS will put out an update or better version soon! Rumours out there?
Greetings,
Andreas
tried and failed...
tried the above TCP solution- Not working for me either...
Found best solution. Go try the latest imate rom. You can then plug out/in the cable as many times as you want & it'll just work fine.

It seems to be as soon as you access the internet through the passthru connection on Activesync. So installing AvantGo/PocketWeather might explain this to a certain degree as they may be accessing the internet.
Incidentally, how could Microsoft have stuffed up so badly with Activesync? It's a tiny program but works so badly - Couldn't a third party come up with a different version of Activesync or something? I'd pay for it if it worked better than this crock!
Just for info, the latest iMate ROM (With Push Email) does indeed seem to fix this issue. Obviously it was with the WM5 side rather than anything that could be fixed on the PC side.
My Active-sink probelms disappeared since upgrade to the latest iMate ROM. Has been working like a charm with all apps and utilities installed, Tweaks2k2, Spb Pocket Plus, Pocket Informant, Worldmate Pro, etc...
told you it works
cheers
I am running the 2.08 (Qtek test) rom and have this issue since last friday. before that never had it!!
What I changed on thursday was: enable exchange server sync and use it. because push-email si no solution for me I just disabled it and dropped the association.
Then (on friday) the trouble started.
I tried DrTCP...and ended up with a broken netlogon (secure client) service on the pc. The IS solution for that was a new image . . thank you very much.
I am back on track with the pc now, but AS still slows down my device.
Are any of you having this trouble using or have used:
-Push email
-Blackberry
What is the amount of free program memory on your device? Mine is around 6MB (probably caused by Blackberry install which I cant remove). . . .

Activesync 4.5 doesn't work anymore

Hi. I've had a really good search for info before posting and tried lots of things but I'm stumped!
I've got a Softbank X01HT (HTC Hermes 200). It used to work fine with AS4.2 and 4.5 but stopped working one day and hasn't worked since!
When I connect the phone via USB everything looks normal. I get bing-bong and bong-bing etc, I can see the phone is attached in device manager, the phone charges etc. etc. but AS won't connect to the phone. In AS connection setting it says USB is available etc. I have deselected advanced USB connection and tried "work"/"internet" etc.
I haven't done anything to the phone. No upgrading of ROMS or OS or anything. I even gave my laptop a first birthday!
I have a Dell Precision M60 running Win XP SP2 and a fresh installation.
I have deselected "do not allow exceptions" in Windows Firewall and AS has put exceptions for itself in there.
I am not running through a hub.
I'm hoping someone can help - maybe I missed something in all my searching for a solution.
Had something similar happen to me once. Resolved it by deleting the partnership on the pc from within active sync on pc (make sure phone isn't connected or active sync won't let you delete the partnership). Issue was with the partnership profile on the pc getting corrupted nothing to do with phone at all. Once partnership is deleted connect phone (make sure you have reset your phone settings that you have changed back to default) and set up a new partnership. Good luck and let us know if it works.

Thanks for replying.
As mentioned, my laptop got a "first birthday" i.e. the HDD was wiped and the OS re-installed. There are therefore no pertnerships or remnants buried deep in the registry etc. to delete. In AS (with or without the phone connected) everything except for "connections settings" is greyed out.

Do you by any chance have zone alarm running? If you do switch it off and see if it works. If you don't then switch off Windows Firewall and see if works. Post the results.

Whenever mine acts up I simply disconnect my phone, restarting my pc, restart my phone and is well. I dont have the problem often but it solves it for me
Active sync
I had a similar problem. Check out Settings/Connections USB to PC and uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"
This worked for me.
May not be related but worth a try.

Cheers. When at work, Windows firewall is off. When at home it is on but exceptions are allowed and AS has put itself in the exceptions. Switching off the firewall completely is not an option as the admin has switched that function off (greyed out). This is no different to when it was all working so I'm not so sure it's that.
I don't have zone alarm. In fact I have re-installed very little since having reinstalled Windoze.

Had a similar problem.
Open task manager. Is RAPImgr.exe taking up all the processor time on a CPU (so will take 50% on a dual core machine, 100% on single core).
I had this issue with AS 4.5 when upgrading from the old machine (Wizard) to the new Hermes and basically had to reboot between connection attempts to get RAPIMgr to die. When I killed it manually, the computer rebooted anyway.
The problem with this seemed to be disconnecting it mid-sync and then connecting a new phone which then broke it. The way I solved it was to stop connecting the Wizard.....
Perhaps try removing the relationships on AS on the phone. I guess it might work....
Hi last suggestion I have - I know you mentioned your pc was wiped so there are no partnerships, however the first time you tried to connect your phone since then something might have gone wrong and a partnership might have started to be created but not yet completed. With your phone disconnected can you open active sync, click on "file" then on "delete mobile device" (if it allows you to - it might be greyed out) - See if that works and get back to us.
Cheers

USB tool keeps disconnecting

Hi all,
I dit the Snapvue upgrade and that was great and all
Now when I connect using USB tool, The WM part keeps connecting and disconnecting. So I cannot sync and cannot copy large files.
It stays connected for les than a minute and then disconnects and then reconnects after a few secconds...
I tried a lot of things. I don´t even remember what. I´ve been working on it for 6HOURS or more.. (Damn is it really almost 15:00 now!?)
I am now resetting my shift to factory defaults (HD Recovery and Clear Storage) and start over...
What I´d like to know:
Has anyone got the same problem? (not the 3g/gprs disconnect issue...)
Has anyone got a solution?
thx,
Pfeffa-rah

Yeah I have the same problem.
After a clearstorage I still have the problem, so it has something to do with the Vista side (I think)
I noticed it when I tried to backup my rom. So that is something like 50mb.
Yep,
I have reset en redone my WM side.
The connection is verry stable. Didn´t disconnect once!
So I guess it must be a vista problem.
Next I´ll go and install and customize Vista.
I´ll let you know.

How did You upgrade SnapVUE ?
Is upgraded to new SnapVUE version or other full WM system ?
Solved (sort of)
Finaly,
I got it to work.
I did a ful reset (snapvue clear storage & HD recovery) and started from scratch.
Then I first upgraded Snapvue to Full WM using the Liberate Shift Pack method from:modaco.com
and everything worked fine.
So the problem had to be at the Vista side...
I first installed ALL updates from Windows Update. (First the Update for Windows Update itself...) And everything worked fine.
Yes, also the screen resolution change button and the Shift Control Center.
I then installed SP1
After the reboot I had to uninstall the Shift Control Center en reinstall it.
(After uninstall the setup file is still there: C:\Program Files\HTC\Control\Setup.exe )
And that fixed the Control Center en Res Change stuff.
USB tool however started disconnecting randomly again immediatly.
So I Removed SP1 again and then everything worked fine again.
It seems like nothing when I read it like that but I´ve been at it since 10:00 this morning and it is now 23:20 over here!
I hope my trail and error day saves some of you some time just as some other post have saved me a lot of time.
Conclusion:
Problems with USB Tool disconnecting and SP1 Installed?
Try uninstalling SP1
Use Microsoft patch to solve USB disconnecting?
Isnt the problem that, what is fixed by
MicroSoft HotFix KB934796(USB)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934796
MicroSoft HotFix KB929761(WUSA)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929761
or
MicroSoft HotFix KB936825(SD)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936825
These fixes are installed in preinstalled system (but not automatically by update!).
Ah,... Interesting,
I am a bit reluctant to try, since I just now got my system running nicely...
Can anyone confirm if these actualy work?
So, I guess this problem is not so common....
I looked at the three hotfixes but they do not seem to have anything to do with my problem. And aren't they installed with SP1?
I would really like to upgrade to SP1 but I do NOT want to loose my USB Tool connection.
Sugestions anyone?
(I am not the only one with this problem, am I?)
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah
I ve that problem in vista side with 3g connection. It begins to happen after hibernating. Connection is closed with a BROWSER event ( I can see it with the events viewer) each 1 minute and one second after is restored. No too bad for web browsing but imposible for services that need continues connection. I ve to restart vista and all works again......(until next hibernation)
Dani
Hi,
It seems like the same isue, only, it started disconnecting right after installing SP1. So it didn't first hibernate but right after reboot.
But I can't beleive its just us three......
Everybody else seems to do fine with SP1 and USB Tool......

I planned to install SP1 tomorrow but I start to doubt if this is really a good idea. My Shift is working fine now both in WM and Vista with no connection or hibernate problems at all anymore. Can I remove SP1 without leaving any trace in Vista? If somebody could confirm this than I shall give it a try.
Hi Sonietje,
I did remove SP1, and it restored my USB-Tool connection.
So, I guess you can.
It takes a little less long to remove than it takes to install, but don't wait around and wait for it. Go have a party in the mean time, or travel around the world or something. I didn't time it but I watched most of two TV shows whil it uninstalled! So it is way more than an hour.
Let me know if the USB Tool works after upgrade will you?
Thx,
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah
I'm running the vista SP1. and it's running perfect, no problems with 3g, usbtool or anything so I'm looking forward to hear the results.

What rom version do you have from WM?
Maybe there is some difference..
CE OS 5.2.1620 build 1825.0.4.2
Got the same rom.
I think it might be a WMDC problem.
I had some connection problems with my Kaiser through real USB until I "killed" the procec (in task manager, after exiting the program...)
Then it conected OK, and I could sync again.
So I might give it another try soon
Greetz and thanks,

OK, So here I finaly go and try out SP1 again.
Guess What!
It won't install.
When I use Windows Update I get one of those undescriptive error numbers, and the standalone installer, just stays at 99% for about 10 min. and then just exits.... No reboot, no errors, not even a beep.... the window just closes...
I am rather developing a dislike to Vista.

Did you install it by update first time or by standalone installer? Sounds like it hasnt completely removed itself.
First time was stand alone, today was by update first and later standalone.
Update just gives me a 80070057 error.
Any sugestions how to remove it properly then. (It seemed gone since everything worked.)
thx,

Vista won't connect to 3G

Ok so I've liberated SnapVUE on my new Shift and for the life of me i cannot figure out how to get the Vista side of things to work with EDGE/3g.
Win Mobile connects just fine.. syncs with outlook.. etc. And wifi works on the Vista side.. but no 3G.
Any help? Im using ATT and wap.cingular as my EDGE isp.
When the 3G in WM side in on, after switch on the Vista, you need to wait about 1 to 2 min to start up the 3G on Vista.
I had the same problem.
You have to go to the device manager and look under network-devices. There you must see a RSID mobile "something" device (this is your modem 3G) if you had turned it on in communication manager. I activated it and since then, I have a working Internet connection via 3G if I turn on the Modem in communication manager. Just try it.
If it's not working, uninstall this device and reboot. Vista should search and install the drivers correctly.
good luck

No, in the connection manager i have 2-3 bars on vista. Would only being on edge matter??
Im wary of resetting vista because i put several hours into software install and config.
Dont know what i did but its working now
i spoke with htc support over this

In my case, I switched the connection from My ISP to Media Net (isp.cingular to wap.cingular) and disabled the ATT Proxy.

Atnt pay-go media net hsdpa help

Hi all, need help with my liberated shift. It was working fine for the past 2 wks that I have had it. 3G worked flawlessly on both wm/vista.
I had installed Mozilla firefox browser on the vista side 2 days ago and now I can't get a connection. The wm side shows the connection to be 3g but I am not recieving any push mails or weather updates at all.
When I tried to manually send/receive I get an syncro error with no internet connection, yet the display shows 3g?
On the vista side, it just shows the connection to be local only. I uninstalled the Firefox/restarted but this problem is not going away. By the way..I have the performance at the vista side set to "high performance" as well. Please help me out...
Thank you
Same problem here since 5 minutes, re-installed german ROM, Provider E-Plus BASE, Data flat.
No idea, what happen...
What is really strange is that I am showing full bars @ 3g on the wm side...hopefully someone can bring some light to this matter...but glad that it's not a hardware issue as I am really enjoying this device..despite the battery life.
I had the same problem. It went away after updating connection settings in WM. My shift seem to periodically need that (or perhaps the "switch off..." that follows). Sorry if that was an obvious suggestion, but it realy helped me from a similar problem.
Also, the new usb... driver included in the driver update is said to ignore powersettings on vista. Since upgrading, I have run on powersawer mode without any network problems (provided that I safley remove usb stuff like SD or Lan, before hibernating vista). Have anyone else seen that?
as usual..thanks to all for the help... the real culprit was myself, as i had forgotten to pay the bill for the data service...all is good now... hehe.. so the only item that remains to be solved for me with this great device is the battery...all else is good!
thanks
