Connecting Keyboard Like Devices via USB or Bluetooth To Mogul
I have searched through the posts here and in other forums and have not found a precise or complete answer to these questions. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not an expert. I did read one post about using the Mogul as a control device ( keyboard ) however a very useful application is to use the Mogul as a data collection device in the field, especially when end users may have devices all ready connecting to laptops/desktops via the USB and seen as ASCII output ( like a 101 keyboard ).
Does the Mogul have USB host capability through the connector? There seems to be conflicting opinions. If it does what is needed to turn on the capability?
This is the scenario I am trying create without having to rebuild or build new devices. A cost effective solution is the goal.
Assume the data collection devices I want to connect to the Mogul have a standard USB connector and wiring the same as a USB 101 type keyboard ( though the devices are not keyboards ) and the signals coming out of the connector are the same. The data stream is ASCII character stream. The USB devices are self powered so they do not need to draw the 5 volts from the Mogul.
The goal is to connect such a device to the Mogul directly via the USB connector so that it looks like a keyboard OR connect the device to an external Bluetooth transmitter that looks like a Bluetooth keyboard.
Off the self product would be preferable to having to black box the project.
It would seem simple considering there are USB Bluetooth transmitters at fairly low cost, but I have not been able to find one for this specific application. Hacking and existing Bluetooth keyboard might work but it would be a bulky solution, a considerable downside as well as expense for each of the devices.
I'm not a corporate Mogul, just a single employee end user who has specific data collection needs.

I know that connection to the internet can be achieved via USB&ActiveSync or Wifi. But can the device be connect to the internet via normal Ethernet plug on my (non-wireless) router. Which adapters are required to do so? At home I do not have a wireless router so I am wondering if this is possible…
And, can auto charger for my Hermes (TyTN) be also used for Athena??

Buy a cheap wireless access point (with no router) and connect it to the port on your wired only router.
the phone may also connect to the internet via bluetooth
and yes i believe the charger from your hermes should work

No. That's just a bunch of connectors. It won't help your situation.
I still think Pyrofer's sollution is the best one (second post).
any bluetooth dongle should work
but ideally speaking if u can afford it go for the wireless access point it will cost a little more than a bluetooth but its well worth the extra 10-15 bucks

Nonetheless I would like to stay "wired" for some time more. Reason is that I have two small kinds and we are leaving in a small apartment. I would like to prevent exposing them to any unnecessary "wireless" technologies as long as possible, at least now when they are growing up.
So, once again I am asking you: is there an adapter between Ethernet plug (RJ-45) and (mini) USB on the Athena and will eventually connection to the internet work?
There is NO wired adaptor for the Athena. The closest you can get is a USB lead and activesync, then use the PCs internet connection.

On the web site, it says:
Supports PPC 2002/2003/2003SE, CE5/4.2/4.1 and Windows® Mobile 5.0 (coming soon)
I am not sure it means the driver for WM5 is coming soon.

Ummm, you want to protect them from wireless radio waves? I take it you leave the phone in flight mode when in their presence, don't use Microwave ovens in your house, haven't got cordless phones e.t.c.? Sorry, don't want to bash your views, but there IS an awful lot of paranoia put out by the media and many people who jump on the bandwagon before establishing the facts.
As for sharing the internet, I know you can do it from PC->Ameo V easily with the included 'internet sharing' applet. I do it via BT, but USB works equally well.
On WM5 has anyone been able to access USB devices like printer, Pendrive etc directly? Would be great to be able to print directly or access files from a USB memory stick.
Have heard of HP printer drivers for older versions of windows CE somewhere...

I know of no WM5 or WM6 phone for that matter that have a usb STACK on them that would allow them to use a usb device. They are designed to BE a usb device for a pc...not the other way around.

i think you are mistaken.. there are a couple new WM5 and/or 6 devices that have USB hosting support.. among them is the Athena, O2 Flame, and toshiba g900, and those WM devices exclusive from/for japan..
Yeah, it is the other device that must be able to read the PPC.
My stereo read my Tytn as a storage device. Can play music directly from the PPC. However it is the Stereo doing the recognizing job. Not the other way around.
I'd just like to clarify a few things:
1) USB has two sides - host and client and they are different by hardware and not just software so there is no "able" question here.
2) In cases like memory stick, printer etc. when your device uses what is connected to it, the phone must act as host. The reason there are few devices with USB host is mainly because to be fully implemented this standard must provide up to 500 mA current to the hosted device and of course thats a bug problem when working on battery.
(Any phone that does implement it, provides it "unpowered" so not all devices will work)
3) In cases where something is using your device like the stereo, the phone acts as a client so with the right piece of software (like WM5Storage) any phone can be used.
The fujitsu Pocket LOOX T810/830 can act as a USB hub.
Some devices have this capability but not a feature that is common.

I'm really unqualified to discuss this in great detail, but why I got there was - I've read somewhere in these forums about Win95 emulators for ppc devices. Now if it could be possible to "emulate" just the USB stack portion of Win95, maybe, the ppc could be connected to devices like printers which would not require a powered USB connection.

I do work now and than for a few WISP and the radios (Motorola Canopy Units) are programed with and Ethernet cable connected to a computer and the Canopy units and you use the web browser to set the IP's and do all the tweaking on the Canopy Units. My question is if I bought an adapter like this...

Could or will my Kaiser let me use the web browser in it using the mini USB and browser in the phone instead of carrying a notebook computer up a tower to tweak the Canopy Units and logging into the IP's I need on them.
I'd say no. The kaiser cannot use its mini usb in host mode. Basically the Kaiser cannot control other devices via usb, it can only be controlled.

There are adapters to add host function http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/CFU2U.html but they are very expensive and this particular device, I'm not sure will work with your Kaiser or Tilt.
There are other phones which you can use to control the devices, I believe the IPod is on such device, but you may want something with a little more power like the HTC Shift http://www.htcwiki.com/page/Smartphone+Guides or the newer Advantage.
The point being there are alternatives for you

I was looking to connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and found the required answers int he Accessories section. I bought a USB connector and plugged in the bluetooth dongle form my Microsoft media keybaord and both the keyboard and pointer worked fine.
But then it started me thinking that it was a bit annoying that I had to use the single connector available as this meant I couldn't plug in the HDMI one and use the Tab as a Media PC. My cheapo sub £100 no-name tablet has seperate USB and HDMI connectors, why can't Samsung see the benefit of this? The only option was to control the HIDs directly without using the dongle.
Well it is possible. There is a free app on the Market which allows you to do just that - Bluetooth Keyboard Easyconnect. Your tab needs to be rooted and the instructions are not necessarily clear. If you do try it, to connect you need to go back to the standard bluetooth interface, make you HID discoverable (push the button?) and then scan for bluetooth devices. Once it is found and you pair you then need to go back to the app and select the HID in there as well.
So now I have a nice, extremely small media pc (but not) under the TV. Films, music, internet, work all there and controlled from my sofa.
Just thought I would share that.
