US (AT&T/Cingular) to Greece? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I will be traveling with the wifes family to Greece in June to visit her relatives and I am wondering:
1. Can my 8525 work over there?
2. Do I need to do anything to get it working over there?
3. Does it cost my arm and half my leg to use it over there?
4. Any other tips or things I need to know with my phone?
This will be my first time leaving the US and I have no experience traveling abroad, so figured I would ask before I started calling AT&T up asking them or bothering my wifes family with a bunch of questions.
Thanks,
Nick

What you can do is buy a new prepaid plan + simcard in greece, and use the phone in greece, etc, and buy a calling card to call to the USA. Otherwise, I would assume you would get charged international roaming if you don't have something setup with at&t.
What I am wondering is if you would get charged international text message $ if you communicate with text messages using your at&t simcard with someone in the USA. Does anyone know this answer?

Better idea! Install hardSPL V7 on your device so it assumes it is superCID, buy a prepaid greek sim card, install voip or skype (its cheeper this way) to call USA and have a nice vacation.
Cheers

Nice. I have HardSPL (I'm thinking version 7, someone remind me how to check that again). I was worried VOIP would cost me more just because I am using data in another country. I have the Unlimited PDA plan here, but figured I wouldn't dare use any of it over there.

you need to sim unlock you phone, hardspl is not the same thing as sim unlock, supercid only allows you to flash other roms, not put in a different sim
international sms is i think like $1 per sms, dont remember i forgot

same number multiple sims

Hi all, this is gonna sound dumb, I imagine, and I just don't feel like calling cingular, but before I got my tytn I didn't know anything about cellular services etc.
I just wanna know if anyone can tell me if I can get two sim cards with the same number on both?, so I can like use my other phone on days that I wanna throw my tytn, without having to pop open covers and remove batteries.
I have been told by Cingular and other provider that this in not an option. You phone number is assoitated with a SIM ID so you can only have 1 SIM ID to a phone number.
What about having two sims, different numbers but with caller redirect to the second number if Hermes phone is not answered. This way callers only ever use one number but you can answer on either phone?

Wrong, one can have one phone number on several SIMs, up to four in Europe. T-Mobile Germany, also present in the US market, i.e. offers 3 SIM cards with the same number as their "Multi SIM" product. You can operate 3 mobile phones, or any combination of phone-capable machines (PDA, PC etc.) at once, and take calls on any of the phones.
The two additional cards cost 9 euro per month in Germany, to give you a figure. Check with your service provider.
this is a service offered by most operators, in spain for example with Orange it's called "duo card" or with Vodafone it's called "twin card". Just ask Cingular about this service, they will probably ask you a monthly fee for the second sim (1-2 dollars more on each bill).
Thanks everyone, I just thought I would ask here before I called a rep and talked to them, incase I needed to mention..or not mention a few things, but after reading here, I called one local cingular store, and they said they didn't offer two sims on one number.
Mike, on that redirecting, I'm guessin I would have to add a line for the second sim? would kinda suck to pay another $10.00 a month just to avoid havin to pull a sim, but I might have to consider it.
Thanks again for the time and info everyone.

Well it might depend how often you would use it and what for. If jit's just for ocassional use without any frills what about pay as you go?
I think it would be cool if they offer this stateside. I would leave one, on a charger, in the car.
This way, the car has it's own phone. completes the whole integration thing.

Sim Unlock My Wing

I just inherited my brother's phone, a wing he used in the states and i owuld like to use it in the UK. can anyone please help? im dying to try this manificent phone
google IMEI CHECK
i know about imei check but i was hoping there would be a free solution out there
unfortunately not at this time for the Wing.
Is the Sim Unlock Available for Wing
Is the Sim Unlock available for Wing Now or still not. Any help will be really appreciated.
No. it's been 2 days! haha
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO SIM UNLOCK THE PHONE FOR FREE.
Have a T-Mobile user put their SIM card into the phone and call 611 from the phone. Go to Customer Service and inform them that you will be leaving the country and would like to unlock the phone so you can use international prepaid SIM cards to call your aunts and uncles in *insert non-US country here*. They will give you the unlock code for the phone.
This will only work if the T-Mobile user has had the T-Mobile service for more than 30 days. If you are able, have your brother do it from his SIM card since he had the phone previously.
Thanks for the advice. Works!
Ok, just for conversation. Lets say I want to get a new wing with my equipment protection from Tmo. Does a SIM unlock on my old wing make it useable for others?
Equipment protection? Huh? Are you talking about getting it replaced with the insurance? and giving your old one to someone else?
When the phone is locked, it ONLY works under T-mobile.
When the phone is unlocked, it will work with any carrier, ie TMO, ATT, etc..
How about Vodafone NL..
Is there any free solution to sim unlock it ..?
Anyone with a Herald/Atlas or any of its variants ... are all in the same boat. There's no free unlock solution as of yet.
AT&T and T-mobile both have the same policy on unlocks:
- Account must have existed for at least 3 months
- Must not have had an unlock request within the last 3 months
- (Generally) Must be outside the Buyer's Remorse period (30 days)
- Must not be one of the 'special' phones (Sidekick, iPhone)
If the Wing is an upgrade to your existing service, you can get it unlocked after 30 days.
New customers must wait 90 days.
Simple workaround: If you know someone on T-Mobile with an available unlock (one per 90 days, remember), you can just give them the IMEI number, make & model, and they can unlock it from there. They do not check if you're calling from that phone -- but the phone must still belong to the carrier/be branded with that carrier
SO if my phone is "lost" and i get a new phone. Is myold wing good to go for someone else?

Tmobile us htc hd2 unlocked for use on at&t

I bought the US version of HD2 today and unlocked it.
What do i have to do to use all the features and functions on AT&T's network? I would like my email, internet, weather, stocks to work. Any tips? I am able to make only phone calls right now and would like to start using all the other features. Thanks in advance for all your help.. also, i have PDA plan already..
I also unlocked the HD2 and am using on AT&T and had the same problems. I could make calls and had internet access for the first day, but had to do a hard reset and when it came back up I could only make calls. There is a fix though. Go to:
Settings>Wireless Controls>Data Connection>Add a new modem connection
Under "Enter a name for the connection" type: Media Net
Select a modem: Select Cellular Line (GPRS), then hit next
Access Point Name: wap.cingular, then hit next
Leave blank user name, password, and domain, then click finish.
You won't get 3G access this way (only Edge), but you should now be able to access AT&T's Media Net data plan and browse without problems. This worked for me anyway.
If anyone knows how to get 3G speed, please share!
AT&T forcing 30$ smartphone data plan
Hi,
I also unlocked my t mobile HD2 and put my at&t SIM card in it. AT&T recognizes my device as blackberry 7290 and automatically added 30$ smartphone data plan on it. Also, they did not help me set up the edge network which i finally did by myself. Anyways, is there a way to put only 15$ data plan on it?
Thanks,
Vikrant

Buy the Telstra one, that's the only way you'll get 3G sorry to say. Wish US carriers all use the same frequencies.
Guys, how you unlocked the phone?
I got a unlocked T-Mobile HD2 and try to use HSPL2 to flash this moble, but the message tell me "wrong model ID".
I don't know what to do.

Ok, all i had to do was call Tmobile to get the unlock code for my phone. i downloaded the MediaNet cab file, installed it and everything is working great except the Visual Voicemail which i understand because it is strictly developed for Tmobile.

You do realize that:
A. There's a separate forum for the T-Mobile HD2?
B. You could've bought an HD2 (Telstra version -- T9193) that's compatible with AT&T 3G?
I am also interested to learn of any way to avoid paying the $30 data plan instead of the $10 one. Anyone? Anyone? I looked at the option of changing the IMEI but will not go there after learning it is illegal. I'm ok with edge on at&t but not if I'm paying $30 a month.

Register a feature-phone with AT&T and get them to switch the data back to $15.
Also, any Blackberry IMEI they're registering is wrong as nobody sells/uses a BB 7290 anymore.

NuShrike or anybody, Do you have specific experience with switching down to the $15 data plan? Whether the 7290's are in use anymore or not I'm thinking that AT&T is going to switch me right back to the $30 data plan when I make a call from my HD2(BB 7290 to them).

I'm technically still using my Sony-Ericsson on my grandfathered data plan, and have never been upgraded to the $30. I also stay under ~100MB a month so ymmv.
I've read all over HowardForums this is the way to get back in to $15. Just make sure you'd NEVER registered your HD2 IMEI with your account on AT&T by telling some rep, or such. Otherwise, you're SOL because you've publicly admitted to them that it's a "smartphone". Don't do any communication with at&t using your HD2. Get a pay-go and swap in your current sim if you need to.
So far so good. I've made it almost 24 hours with a $10(when added to family unlimited messaging) data plan. Anyone know if I should be in the clear or do they only sweep weekly/monthly?
I have been wanting to try and see if I can buy a pay as you go plan and phone then just swap out the sim in my T9193 and all be fine without them catching on to what phone im using and terminating my data? Anyone ever done this before? The first time I tried pay as you go I told them what phone I was using and shortly after the data was terminated because I was using the nexus one so I was stuck with unlimited minutes and no data.
A friend of mine received his unlocking code today, and on his AT&T customer online page... it showed that he had that ancient BlackBerry model as well.
However, they didn't automatically switch his data plan. I told him to basically call, but NOT from the device, and to demand the unlimited data plan, but not for the iPhone (which is what he had previously) so we'll see whether or NOT they ask too many questions about the device he's currently using.

Flash HSPL2 and new ROM wouldn't help to unlock the sim. That's what I did. I ends up fax the request to Tmobile where I got my phone at full price. They send me the code few hours ago.
good luck.
how many digits did u have in your unlock code ?

I am using it with ATT, its unlocked from tmobile, I got the att cab, just install this, and it puts the media net settings on the phone
The only problem is sometimes in my email, or google maps, it will say something about a connection problem? Anyone else have those issues?

T-Mobile Activation Help

This is my first phone in America so don't really understand the system but:
I just received my DVP (on pre paid.) I put the sim card it came with in, phoned up t-mobile to try and activate it and they asked for the activation code on my welcome pack (which I didn't receive? should I of done?) and they were saying that I would need to buy a new sim card (which she quoted $30) to get it to work as my current sim is useless.
So I try dell and they won't respond to me so I'm a bit lost now.
How do I activate this thing?
Do I just need to push dell to send me a new welcome pack or do I not need it and can I activate through another way.
Thanks

I took mine into a physical T-mobile store, and they activated the SIM for $10.
O ok thanks, will try that then.
Just seems strange you're given a simcard which you can't use without paying more. You would of though the companies would want as many people on thei network as they can get.
The best thing for you to do is stop by a Tmo store. But if you are using pay as you go, you might need to buy a sim. FYI, my DVP worked fine with my old sim.

I was able to get them to activate the SIM that came in the box, on a pay-as-you-go plan. The in-store rep just has to call into headquarters, charge you $10 for activation, and ask you what plan you want.

all I did was put in the new SIM and make a call. I was immediately redirected to tmo. I was asked new or existing number. I said existing...gave them the number off of the sim. We disconnected, and in 5 minutes everything was running.
Thanks guys.
In the end I just bought an activation kit off ebay for like $3 and it worked a treat.
I had assumed the simcard would come with everything required to activate it and mine was missing.

[Q] Unlocked Galaxy Tab International Version

Hello Folks
Would love your feed back on following questions:
1) I came across a Unlock Galaxy Tab International Version and I was wondering if I would be able to use it with a pre paid sim card to get voice and text messaging on ATT network without modifying the stock rom on it?
2) If I choose to modify the rom, what would you recommend I use. I read the newbie guide but not sure it has reached a conclusion on what works best for both voice and data?
3) If I want to be able to access data and voice, what would be the "economical" plan prepaid or postpaid that you would recommend?
If you would like link other thread that might answer my questions, your help is much appreciated
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
i own a us tmobile tab which i was able to unlock, i went out and bought an att prepaid card just to test to see if the tab was actually locked, i started with the $25 prepaid and all i can tell you is that it all the funds disappeared in less than a day, i have no clue why, i was only able to test it with 2 phone calls and about 3 tries to go online. not sure if its worth it so you might have to go with a contract but then again not sure if you want that as att is a pain in the ass and giving customers with the tab a big hassle.
I don't see why not. You can use it on both Att and Tmobile.
Tmo has prepaid service including voice and sms for about $0.13 per minute. If you pay in advance $100 you will get $0.10 per minute good for whole year.
Att likes to charge you evry month.
Hello,
Just wanted to update my original post.
1) I picked up the international version of Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it seems to have capability to join either CDMA or GSM network, which I was pleasantly surprised to find as it gives options of network providers.
2) Popped in my prepaid sims from Puretalk USA which uses ATT network but Edge Network for prepaid calling and after going into settings and picking the network, I was able to make and receive calls on it
3) The phone came unlocked, but its not rooted so not sure if I should root it?
Please advice on point 3
Regards
Rooting is not necessary unless you want full control over your Tab.
You will be able to
- remove apps and services you are not using,
- install firewall,
- make full backup of your Tab
- upgrade to a better firmware yourself etc.
Basically, you will gain ability to do whaterver you want including bricking it.
It is a matter of choice and absulutely not mandatory. Typically stock software is not bad.
