i've made a clone but want to know if it backs up everything, programs/all key mapping/general configs/menu settings etc.
so basically if i flash another rom, and provided the main programs are the same (on ppc and storage card) that were mapped etc, i can just flash a new rom, restore pim, run the clone.exe and all the programs and settings are as they were.
if not how do i save the key mappings/general configuratations etc?
this would save so much time after flashing a new rom
cheers

... before an hard reset ?
Well, my Qtek S200 with tonz of apps installed (mostly on the 4GB SD card) became quite slow. Mostly at boot, worst than before.
I periodically back it up by Sprite Backup, but now I would perform an hard reset to clean up and start again from skratch. And reinstall appz with some criteria
So, I'm here to ask a checklist for things to backup and how.
For example,
- export registry keys for the personal identification (how to export?)
- startup apps
- ...
Thanks for any hint
Anybody ?
P.S.: where could I find a ROM upgrade for the Italian QTEK S200 ?
As I'm planning to hard reset...
Thanks
...backup verything. I use SQB Backup for backup (ppc files only and not SDcard): pim contacts, emails, system and my document. These you can restore customized.
I backup everytime after i installed some goods.
With PHM register editor i create also backups, only register though...
...sd card backups i won't create because i save the cabs on the pc...
Thanks for your answer.
I always backup everything with Sprite Backup 5.1 (WM5), but when it restores data, everything come back to my actual status.
How could I save ONLY the user profile (inside the registry, I guess) and the most important configs ?
I'll restore (reinstall) the app programs later
P.S.: all programs are installed on my SD card. I noticed most of them, even moved across directories, keep working. This case, should I re-install them, or could I use them as is, simply linking the executable in the storage card directory ?
Thanks again
...i'm sorry to say but you had to create a good working backup earlier. A register is filled with thousends of keys and you can't find a sort of userprofile.
If you've got an up-to-date backup then you can start from zero: you've got already everything by hand.
Perfom hard reset and create backup with minimun install like pim contacts, emails and internet settings. Then install next thing etc. If you need something immediately you can restore backup from before hard reset.
Every program with is installed on SD card won't be executeted before you accept it (that means that shareware could be used unendlessly instead of b.e. 5 times) but you don't have to install them again. So after reset they are immeditate accessable. Best to have made a copy of startpage\programs so you can copy them after hardreset back so you don't have to seek through all the folders on SDcard.
Only all the programs installed on the ppc you've got to install after hard reset again
You can also schedule backups, i.e. daily, which create a backup with only the changes compare to last one. I've got fullbackups of ±12Mb and incrementel of ±8Mb.
So I perform always fullbackups which i delete weekly...
Hey all,
I have a question.
I have been playing with my 8125 a lot lately and am constantly resetting my device. What I want to know is I have one main machine that I do all my application installs via active sync that way when I hard reset my device I just have to go to add remove programs in active sync and re-check all the programs I want to put back on my phone.
Here is what I want.
I don’t want to have to tell the phone where to install the applications (I want it to default to storage card without any prompts.) and.. I don’t want any confirmation prompts ie: security unsigned, approve this application to be installed, this application was installed properly… etc.. I want to streamline the process so I can just tick the check boxes for my apps, let them download and that’s it. Currently after refreshing I have to spend quite a bit of time clicking “ok” … storage card…. Ok… storage card… ok… I think you get it.
Thanks much!
I've seen a lot of different reg keys out there that may accomplis this. Is there a way to disable the notifications and pre-set the install path peramaters?

You can do this with WinCE Cab manager
If you really reset your device that often why don't you use SPB BACKUP? A reinstallation of all your apps wouldn't be necessary - just load your backup and you're ready to go!
Ya I did think of that but here is my issue.
the reason I am constantly hard reseting is because I am changing and playing with roms pretty much on a daily basis. I've been cooking my own roms trying to come up with what works best for me and what is closest to RTM. Thus why I am always re-installing apps.
So if I use SPB backup (which I have) it saves system settings and such right? So if I am switching roms all the time will it break my device?
Thanks guys! I'm new to the forum here I just got my first PPC phone a couple weeks ago but I've been an avid windows mobile (smartphone) user for years and have worked on WM platforms as beta tester.
Gotta love this stuff!!!

Yes you are exactly right, and so many people seem to miss this... Spb Backup, Sprite Backup, etc are full backups that backup and restore the registry and all. If you restore this from one rom to a different rom you are likely to break something (may not be obvious at first, but you have a very good chance of things being broken inside the registry that you will trip up on at some point).
So yeah, the only way around this (without building your own extended rom and such) is to create a folder (or set of folders) on your SD card with all the cabs, files, and settings that you need for when your flash a new rom. Then run through that to set things up. You can also use ActiveSync to reinstall apps (just check them all and it will put them all back on) but you have to remember which ones (if any) require a reset of your device as that can cause probs with the others that are installing (if all done together).
Yep,
but at least you can import contacts, email and pim data that way quite easy!
Since you continiously flash your device: there will be no other solution but reinstalling your applications again and again. You might want to look around for a CAB extractor and then create your own CABs with all the progs you would like to have in one large CAB ???
One such CAB Installer Creator is: WinCE CAB Manager
Take a closer look at MolskiBiz_DevPack and you will find a utility to extract CAB files. It will be a bit work to add all the registry values to the Installer you're going to create but finally you might save a lot of time since you only run 1 installation instead of xxx ...
This is good, I have been playing with wince cab and it is a solution.
Now I'm going to work on making my extended roms.. will this work? I did a full recover of my apps through active sync just an hour or two ago and it reported total size of all cabs as just over 112megs. That means I'd be flashing a MONSTER rom and would it even be possible?
2gig mini SD card.
thanks
I tried before to add some apps (cab installers) to a personalized extended rom but it never worked the way I wanted it to. You might have seen that you always have to give some inputs when ever you install programs, sometimes you get ask if you really want to install the app, sometimes you need to choose a location. So, if you add CAB installers UNCHANGED to the extended ROM it just won't install because during extended rom installation you have no way of providing that information.
hmmm I installed the EU Rom upgrade, having removed storage card amd take a copy of PIM.VOL. Upgrade completed, I can see apps on my storage card but my phone can't see them in the list of programmes, so I can't add them to programme font page or start menu... My phone also doesn't seem to see the pim.vol so I can't reload all my contacts (no they weren't all on my pc - I can sync with that fine but not all my contacts were on pc)
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE - I can't be the first - or last - with this..!?
thankyou
Mark
Try TotalCommander to copy the file + backup your contacts with PIMBackup2.8 in future. As for the apps, you need to re-install them, so you can safely delete the apps on the storage card saved under Program Files
Thanks, going through various cab files etc and re-installing, TomTom next! Copying pim.vol hasn't worked, I have some Mob no's on my sim and can see them but bizarrely when I try to add to favourite contacts, all I see are a few email addresses, not the (few) mob no's I have on the phone. Looks like I will have to re-source these , what a chore... I though that copying the pim.vol would save me this task (am sure I read it in these august forums!)
all the best, Mark
ps any other tips on how to fully restore what contacts I have, so I can add them again to favourite contacts, are appreciated.
You may want to look into Sprite Backup. It's very nice for restoring system state after moving to a new rom. After flashing a new rom I have all applications / contacts / emails / texts / etc back on my phone within 10 minutes. I don't have to install anything. It's quite nice, especially with all the flashing and testing I do.
Hi all,
I have a question... i use a few htc devices and love changing and trying different roms, different configs, etc... but whenever i get a good config i like, i would love to have a copy of the phone as-is.. i mean, that if one day i want to load that config back, i could just install like a rom with all the settings and config set just the way i want...
am i clear??? i think i lost myself there
anyways, i suppose creating some sort of rom from the phone set up, i could perhaps just flash it just back... i'm not sure which way to go....
any help or pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated
by the way, xda rules. no doubt about it.
What you need is called Backup software ,my friend
There are plenty of them: SPB Backup,Sprite Backup, SKTools...
Personally i had problems with SPB and adopted Sprite. You can do a full backup of your device which saves all data and settings; then you'll be able to restore at any time the whole saved configuration as you traveled back in time
Note: backup files (stored in SD) are self-extracting, that means that restore can begin immediately after a hard-reset by just tapping the backup file: no need to install the backup app first!
P.s.: For a "partial" backup that saves only data related to phone and agenda (contacts, appointments, mail,SMS etc..) there's a free app called PIM Backup.

I have Sprite as standard on my T-Mobile Compact V, and I have just used it. I am familiar with disk imaging on PCs, but I am not sure how mobile pdas work. Is this equivalent to a disk image? Somehow, I feel it is not. For example, I doubt if I could restore onto a new phone - or could I?
In my experience, with Sprite Backup I am able to completely restore a previous situation even after a hard reset. This works as long as you don't change ROM: it is absolutely not advisable to restore a backup in a different phone/ROM from which it was created.
Backup for Mobiles works exactly like Backup for PC, you have the same facility in your desktop Windows: you can make a full backup, format your hardisk and have back the whole config with All files by restoring the backup file, it's as simple as that
As a personal example: I have 2 completely different WM operating systems, depending on the SIM i decide to put in...when needed,I can easily switch between one and another within 10 minutes without needing a PC, and that's cool

So this differs from drive images, which may include all the operating system. The ROM is not part of the backup, right? And for there to be such a backup that includes the ROM, one would have to install it with a remote operating system, right?
I confirm that ROM is not included in the backup, that's why it's not recommended to restore on a different ROM and why i wouldn't compare it to a diskimage too. But the backup is able to restore the configuration of that specific rom (e.g. if a-gps was disabled when backup was made, then you'll restore an a-gps disabled config)
Just wanted you to know in case you will need it in the future. I was looking for an easy to use and effective backup tool and I came across SPB Backup which is simply great as it creates an EXE file with the backup of all your content (contacts, programs, registry keys, messages, etc.) - if you flash your ROM or you move to a new HD2 all you have to do is copy the EXE file onto your device (or storage card) and run it and... that's all . I was playing a lot with some custom ROMs lately and this little tool saved me a lot of time. Really great soft - just make sure that if you move to a completely different firmware you might need to restore only soma data but it's so user friendly that it shouldn't be a problem, there are also restore profiles (new ROM, new device, etc.) so it's automatic. Here's a like to the producer's website: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/ - just don't think it's an advertisement or smth as I have nothing to do with them - it's just a great piece of soft imho so I thought it was worth sharing.
I also think this is thebest ROM (closest to stock) - Leo lite 2.10/1.66 base: http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621070&highlight=576 - I just added Cookie's Home Tab Editor, a great tool that let's you add new tabs to your home screen etc. - you'll find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633590. Here's a great video: http://www.youtube.com/v/aqOINVb5YNI
Hi
will it allow you to restore your original ROM
if yes how it can write on the read only memory without breaking the rom protection. How it can write on the read only memory.
Best regards
no it won't install rom..only your phone files, make sure you have a stock rom for your phone, usally the provider will have a update rom to download, download it , install it then backup your phone, if you have to resore your phone you have to install rom the run your backup restore
