Downloaded and installed the Shut Down Cab on my Wing. The three options are:
1. Light Off
2. Shut Down (Does not Power Off, only turns off screen?)
3. Soft Reset
My question is: Should Shut Down turn the Power Off? If not, what is the purpose of this compare to Light Off?

Press any key if you press Lights off. You'll see that your phone is still on but just with the lights off.
Shutdown is like when you press your power button on the top.
Soft reset, well... speaks for itself.

Thank you. Apparently Shutdown and Lights off do the same thing for me as I can touch any key after using either one and the phone works as if it were Lights off.
Maybe I don't see the purpose of them as being separate functions.
Check "keyboard lock" (more or less.. my wing rom is in spanish) under configuration - system and make sure it's set to "block all buttons except power button" if not, every button will power on your device after shutdown, making it look like turning the lights on.

Yes, that is correct. That is why I said that both options are doing the same thing. I would have thought that one would Power Off.

The power button can only put the phone is Standby. In PDA phones there is no such thing as OFF. The RAM needs power all the time. Sliding the battery cover in and out will also power off the device. Don't leave that long though, otherwise you risk losing all the information.

I'm new so plz be patient. Ok, pressing the power button only allows us to set the device in standby mode. How do I turn off the phone (gsm) mode then? The idea is just that I want to figure out a way to reduce the power consumption as much as possible.

To turn the phone itself off click on the signal strength indicator then click on 'Turn on flight mode'
This turns off the phone part of the device but leaves the pda side still functional

This is not true. When you do that, the background light will be off, but the phone is still working.

You could install PocketZenPhone from here: http://zendrui.free.fr/ and then, as long as your fingers are not too fat, you can press an icon on the today screen. 8)

I don't think that the GPRS is using that much power, but to turn it off, hold the RED Phone button down for several seconds (I never timed it, I just wait for the "GPRS Connected" icon to disappear.
Your best bet for power consumption is to lower the screen brightness to it's lowest level, and set the screen backlight to go off at 30 seconds, and lastly to set the device to power down at 1 minute of inactivity.
copy this app to your magician, in a folder you want. Bind it to a hard button or make a shortcut on your Todayscreen with SPB Pocket PLus or another program.
PocketZenPhone (the tray version of it) can also be used to set the profiles via hardware buttons. This can be done with making shortcuts to the .exe with setting the specific profile. I'm using this together with MortButtons to switch between my profiles of PocketZenPhone.

However holding the button down for several seconds will allow you to turn it off completely. = power off; no applications running; no phone or other network connections; zero power consumption, nada.

It will still lose some power in keeping the RAM filled, if it loses all power (goes very slowly however), all your installed programs and data will be lost. It takes a long time, but it still uses power to keep the RAM chips powered and the clock correct. Furtheremore, with the Magician it keeps the phone and alarms awake, so you can receive calls. You have to turn on flight mode manually to turn the radio off. Also you have to turn off all alarms to prevent your device from waking up. Your method is more like the one used on the Wizard, where holding the power button for 5 seconds really turns everything off and when pressing and holding again makes the Wizard start up again (with boot screen and all).

Also thought of this when I first got my xda mini. Now, after some reading here in the forums, I just switched my xda mini to flight mode before I go to sleep. It turns off the phone. Hope this helps.
Even when I untick 'On Battery power Turn off baclight if device is not used for ... Time', my Jasjar baclight goes off in 2 minutes. And, if I set this to 5 minutes still my Jasjar backlight goes off in 2 minutes. Also, when I choose to 'turn on backlight when a button is pressed or the screen is tapped, it doesnot turn on any button or screen tap. I can turn it on by power button or Call reject red button. Any registry hacks/ Am I missing something? I would like my backlight always on untill I press power button. Also is there any hack to turn on power/ backlight automatically when I open the lid?

Maybe a soft reset (fixes lots of weird problems like this). Cheers,
yeah and if soft reset doesnt help, do backup, sync with PC and do hard reset.
I'm new to Topaz. Every time I finish a phone call or a program, I need to wait for several seconds until the screen is turn off. In fact, I do not key lock my phone.

Hi jabok, thank you for yr reply and i noted the "hard" power button method. As the power button is located at the top of the phone and the button is a little bit difficult to press, in my opinion.
That's why I'm looking for a program or shortcut to have a "soft" button on-screen to turn off the screen

Yes, you may try PSSHUTXP or SVMPOWERMGR. I am currently using SVMPOWERMGR which provides 4 shortcuts in Windows Start program and one of them is screen off.

You can use TouchLockPro and configure CommandCallEnded = !SUSPEND.
You can also couple a (hardware) key shortcut to TouchLockAction SUSPEND

I've read on here that you can do a soft reset without taking cover off and pressing the actual reset button, but I can't find it again. I've looked on hints and tips, wiki, and searched. Can anyone help please?

It creates 2 shortcuts in your start menu. 1 for resetting, and 1 for toggling wifi. You can then add to your quicklinks, if you so wish.

You could always switch off + switch on but johncmolyneux suggested works as well, although I used a cab so as when I push the switch off button, I get a new menu with various options, including soft reset.

If it has died then there's no option but to take the back off and either press the little red button or take the battery out.

The 'out of the box' method, without resorting to additional applications is to press and hold the Power key for 3 seconds.
This opens up a context menu which includes 'Power Off'. This is a full 'power off' state with all background processes stopped. Pressing the power button again restarts the phone as in a soft reset.

So turning the phone off and on again is a soft reset???? If that's the case why are there cabs for soft reset, seems a bit strange to me. Wish I'd known that before when installing some of the cabs and taking the back cover off to press the reset button

I know what you mean about the "grip of death" lol. Been there already.
Turning the phone fully off then on again is the same as a soft reset. A simple on/off isn't.
If the device goes through the splash screens on restarting (as after the power button 'hold' switch off) that is a soft reset.
I use a stand alone program called psShutXP which is available on This Page - download the VGA version. It runs as a small Screen Off/Suspend/Power Off utility.

I'm not sure what you mean by fully off, and simple on/off. Are you referring to power off, and sleep? In which case I was referring to power off, ie hold power button and then select power off

Sorry - could you explain that please? Is there a difference between turning the phone off, and "fully" off?? I assume you're not refering to simply switching off the display when you say a "simple on/off", as that's not off at all.

There is 'screen off' which simply turns off the screen but keeps all currently active programs running. This is only available by using a 'Display Off' or 'Screen Off' switch such as the 'Toggle Screen' option in Media Player. WFi and GPS remain active in this state.

That's what I was clumsily trying to say when I mentioned that a 'full power off' has the same effect as a soft reset- as opposed to a 'screen off' or 'suspend'.

I have a strange problem with my Nexus. My power button is acting strange. Long hold brings up power menu, but:
- short press does not turn screen off
- Smart cover also does not turn screen off
- double tap to status bar does not turn screen off
- 15 seconds of timeout also does not turn screen off.
What is happening? Thank you.

Thats right.
Well i don't think the power button itself is the problem since it works to power it off and on, and since the screen wont sleep by other methods either.
Did you flash a new ROM, kernel, or other mod before this happened?
