Connecting a P3600 to the eduroam network? - P3600 General

Is it possible?
I own a P3600 and i'm also the sysadmin of a eduroam network. Our network is certified (eduroam compliant).
I was able to connect almost any kind of device to the network, except the p3600. Even a nokia running Symbian S60 works just fine!
I can debug the connection on the server side (radius server), i tried 2 different p3600, one of them with the original ROM and with a WM6 ROM. I got the exact same results: the phone connects, it finishes the auth protocol with success (radius server accepts the authentication), and then it just restarts the authentication again, and again....
P3600 Starts Auth -> Radius Server Accepts Auth -> P3600 Starts Auth again
Was someone able to connect to the eduroam network with this phone? It connects fine to the "eduroam-guest" network, an unsecured network.
Other pockets work just fine with the exact same configuration, it must be something specific of P3600.
Thanks for any feedback, i'm getting desperate!
Regards

Hey dude. Look at that.

Maybe it can help you.

As sysadmin You could try increasing eap identity-request-timeout like here : http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/64cd678a-0e63-40e4-9514-79a87067be5b

XDAIIi wi-fi problem

Hi all. I looked at several wi-fi posts on here, but couldn't find anything related to my problem.
I'm beginning to suspect that it's because of something stupid I'm doing, cos it really should be working...
Anyhoo ...I have a wireless router at home, and it's serving 3 PCs with DHCP IP addresses, and an internet connection. I have no issues with it.
What I'm trying to do now is get my shiny new XDAIIi to connect, so that I can have the damn thing on the internet. So far, no luck.
Now, I have got the XDA to detect my SSID. It detects all the settings, and tells me it's connected. I even have a signal strength bar on it which reads about 50%.
However, when I set it to pick up a DHCP address it stubbornly refuses, remaining with a "I can't see a DHCP server" 169.x.x.x address.
I've tried reserving an address on the router and allocating it to the MAC address of the XDA, and manually setting the XDA to have that IP address, entering my router as the gateway, and even entering 2 valid DNS server IPs from my ISP into the name server entries. Still nothing. It says it's connected with the IP address I allocated, but I have no net connection, and I can't ping that address from any of my PCs.
All the while the status screen on the router tells me that the device, with it's MAC address, is connected to the router fine.
Surely this has to be something simple. I have set up all the clients and router for my network, and the settings on the XDA are pertty much the same, and really SHOULD be working.
I'm kinda at my wits end.
So basically any suggestions or advice, or anyone with similar experiences please get in touch, cos I'm struggling to see what I've done wrong, and it's giving me an ulcer.
Many thanks in advance.

3COM WAP (3CRWE454G72) - XDA IIi WIFI Problems
Hi Jess,
I very much share your frustration.
I have a 3COM WAP (3CRWE454G72) which has served me well. I have a few machines at home working from it. At work we have 20+ machines working from the same model (older firmware).
My specs are as follow:
3C number 3CRWE454G72
Software version 1.03.07A
Boot loader version 1.00.00
Wireless version V1.0.2.1
Hardware version R01A
Don't have the office one's specs here at the moment ...
At work I can get an IP address (there's a windows DHCP server) .. AND I can ping google and traceroute to google. BUT, XDA IIi doesn't seem "know" that it's connected (e.g. network settings shows the WAP as available, but not connected). SKYPE even works!! But nothing else, no IE, no Terminal Services Client, no Avant Go, no network ActiveSync. They all say that the is no network card configured (but with vxUTIL, vxIPCONFIG, etc). I can see ALL the IP details from the DHCP server.
At home it's worse. I can't even get it to connect to the WAP (either with WEP 128, WEP 64 or encryption turned off). As I'm not even getting an IP address at home from the WAP's DHCP server, I've built a new DHCP server on my one linux box and it works for all my machines ... now I can actually trace requests from devices for IP's ... and the XDA IIi never requests an IP address. Which tells me that it's not even getting through the first stages of connecting with the WAP (again tried WEP, NO WEP).
To make things worse. I have been able to connect to some open WAP's in the neighbourhood ... everything functioning normal.
I'm losing the will to live here also ... ;-)
Wolfie
the plot thickens...
Hi Wolfie.
Well, at this end I seem to have more news.
By removing all WEP encryption and removing the MAC address access restriction I had enabled, I got the XDAIIi online, and all was working.
I then enabled the security a step at a time, and at each step updated the configuration on the handheld, and it still all worked. I was so pleased.
)
However this morning I have come to put the thing online again, and once again it refuses to pick up a DHCP address.
I tried my process again, and this time it wont work.
It definitely seems that it's the encryption that's stopping it, but I can't get it working this morning.
When I disabled everything I managed to get it online, but then re-enabling the security killed it and I can't get it to come online again.
SIGH
Oh well, I will try again later. Fussy thing. Anyone ever manage to solve this ??
Jess
have u tried soft reseting the device and retrying, sometimes that cures these hiccups

WIFI WOES
Jess, thanks for the reply. There's hope. ;-)
I have tried your approach yesterday. However, to no avail. At home I completely opened my WAP, e.g. any MAC, no WEP/WPA, etc. But still nothing. When I look at my log files on the WAP. I can see plenty of entries coming from my XDA IIi ...
04 min(s) 41 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 43 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 45 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 46 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 48 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
04 min(s) 50 sec(s) after system power on : Wireless MAC address 00:09:2D:14:C9:F2 has connected with the device
... and it just goes on and on and on .... while trying to connect.
At the same time in all connections attemps, I don't get a single entry in my DHCP servers log saying that my XDA II attempted to connect.
Jim: I've tried hard resets, soft resets, O2 Active installed, Corporate mode, pretty much everything my single brain-cell can come up with. ;-)
The thing is definitely a little fiddly indeed ...
The search goes on ...
... anybody out there got their XDA IIi working with WIFI using DHCP and WEP or WPA?
Did you ever get this working?
I have a shiny new XDAIIi and have been trying to get connected via my Cisco Aironet 1200 WAP. The device happily detects my network, accepts the WEP key fine (complains if I enter the wrong key so I know it's communicating) but refuses to pick up an IP address. The Wireless LAN Manager just sits there "Scanning network..."
I firmly belive I'm just missing something but...........
Any help gratefully received :?

I got my QTek 2020i today and for the life of me I can't get it to connect to the internet using my wifi connection @ home
I also have a 3COM router 3CRWE754G72-A and I have my home pc connected to this and also occassionally my work PC - both with no probs.
I can get the qtek to connect and I get a 50% signal strength and I can view an IP address and everything looks good but I can't seem to setup a "Connection" as required by IE?
This is what I get:
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settins"
I tap settings and I get this:
My ISP
Add a new modem connection
My ISP
Add a new modem connection
Add a new VPN server connection
Set up my proxy server
I've gone into each of these and had a "play" but I still can't get the bloody thing to work
Can someone PLEASE help as this is starting to drive me mad! - I'm not giving up easily...I've been trying to get this to work for a good 4 hours now and I can't find anything in the manual or on the web that helps...this post was the closest I could fine >>> hence the bump!
Cheers

have you try to configure the network cards in the connection setting and set the internet using the tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet?

Okay, I can get the connection to read "connected" via the Wireless Lan Manager and I can get an IP address - which is totally different to all the other PC's that use my wifi connection - they're all 192.168.1.x whereas this is very different? - the address that I get isn't even the same as the IP Address of my router - I have a static IP address so I know this isn't changing???
Also, when I view the network card page I see the following:
Configure Wireless Networks
Add New...
3Com Available
I can click on this and view the settings for it or I can hold-click and get the option of connecting. If I do this, it just says "connecting"; it never actually says "connected"?
Anyone know where I can get a walkthrough for this?
Cheers

3 Com Routers
Hi, DotN
I put a 3Com router in my local pub.
I have no problem connecting to it and solving the usual pub talk problems with it.
If you are getting a connection but your IP address starts with 169.254 then I would say you have a WEP problem. The software only appears to check for incorrectly formatted WEP keys, so either turn it off or make sure you enter the correct key. When selecting connect to a router the message sticks on connecting, come out of the screen and go back in after about 30 secs. Check you ip address. I have had some issues with GRPS trying to connect, but they seem to go away after a couple of hides.
I have to say that I am not over the moon with my XDA2i, but the wifi part has worked pretty well for me.

Hi Paddy
Thanks for the info. You're bang on with the IP Address!...169.254.x.x
So what encryption can I use?
I've deffinately got the correct password but it's obviously not working
Cheers
Wayne
Hi again
Okay, I've just checked the encryption and I'm using WPA-PSK authentication with TKIP encryption.
Is this what you had?

Are you using a password or 13 Hex pairs, I use the pairs. Try either turning wep of completely or entering 26 1s. Remove your setting for your ap in Configure Wireless Networks screen then reconnect.
Let me know what happens

Okay, I've basically removed all security from my wifi setup. I live in the middle of nowhere so it's not a problem - although once I get the wifi working I'll try and get the security going again.
I still can't get a connection
...stop the press!
Okay, I had a thought...maybe I can't connect because of the speed?
the router is a 11g but supports 11b (which is what the QTek 2020i/XDA IIuses) - sure enough, I had the 11g only option selected - DOH!
removed that and I've managed to connect without security.
I assume this was my problem all along...will now stick the security back on and try again
Thanks again Paddy
Cheers

Update: I've now managed to get the wifi working with WPA-SPK authentication using TKIP encryption
all along it was simply a case of me having the speed on the router set above what the PDA was capable of! I'd set this ages ago when I first setup my wlan and had forgotten about it cause everything I use is 11g
Cheers again

Doh!...nope, not working again...back to the 169.254.x.x problem.
It's obviously to do with the encryption this time. I'll try some other variations - at least I know that it can work

Ouch......

bump!
pretty much same prob!
i can get an ip, have to check what it is, it tells me its connected on the scanning network page but on the other bit it tells me its available or connecting but never connects!
i've turned wep off and still no joy!
its really starting to drive me mad!
please please someone help
Take a read back through the last lot of posts between myself and MacPad - I think you'll find the answer there.
For me, I had to totally disable my security and everything else - I could then connect. Once I'd done that, I managed to use WEP with a 26 digit key - start by using something like "0" 26 times...make sure u count as u type them zero's in though as if u get it wrong it won't work!
apart from that, not sure what to say. If you're getting the 164.x.x.x ip address though then as MacPad said, it's to do with the security.
I would mention that the XDAIIi/Qtek 2020ii use 11mbps wifi (b) and not 54mbps (g) so make sure u've got ya router configured to allow both types of connection...this eventually turned out to be my main problem - doh!
Cheers

ok now im home ive re-read and done the things mentioned. with a completely unsecure connection i can get a connecation, but the moment i use any kind of encryption (im using wep 64bit, but tried 128bit as well) no matter what key i use i get a split second of connection then its gone!
firewall is not on either.
any ideas??
thank for the suggestions guys im finally progressing

EAP-TLS support on Universal

I'm unable to connect my Universal to my work wireless network. I set the network up in the first place, and have managed to connect other WM5 devices, so I know it's not specifically a WM5 problem. I've tried a couple of T-Mobile ROMs and a Qtek ROM.
The network uses EAP-TLS to authenticate certificates. When I try to connect, the Network Cards applet shows the connection as Connecting, but the Wireless LAN applet shows the connection as Connected. However, it doesn't receive an IP address and eventually gives itself a 169.254 address. The IIS server shows the connection as authenticated.
I reported this to T-Mobile months ago, but have given up on ever getting a reply. Does anyone have any similar experiences?

PPTP on WM5

Can anyone connect to VPN (PPTP) using WM5 via wireless or GPRS?? When i use my old XDAIIi or II, i can connect by now using WM5 i cannot.
Hope those can connect please share. tks.
I can connect to a Windows 2000 PPTP VPN via wireless -- make sure that in Settings/Network Cards/Network Adapters, your network card is set to connect to the Work network.
Also, in Settings/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks, make sure that the lower droplist (private network) is configured to use the Work network.
Aside from those two items, I can't think of any other gotchas.
Ya still doesn't work......
do you know what the vpn device is that you are trying to connect to?
windows servers tend to be quite reliable. there are known issues with some checkpoint and cisco devices.
Hello,
I am having the same problem! I cant connect via VPN (PPTP) to my Windows Server 2003 RAS setup. It works perfectly fine on my laptop over the internet but when I try to connect using my Cinguar 8125 I get a generic "Invalid username/password' kind of error message. I have tried several differnt things, but I was wondering if there are security settings that are turned off or something like that? I actually have my RAS policy to let any device establish a VPN connection (obviously as long as it is authenticated) so I dont know what to do next... any suggestions??

For me works fine. I have only 2 connections:
a) my isp, with gprs configuration for vodafone
b) my work network, with the vpn connection definition (ip address, user, passw and domain)
I have it set up the same way and I still get the password issue... what kind of policies do you have in RAS?

Hi! I am not an Network expert at all, but here in Norway with one teleoperator we have to use a special access point name on My Work Network connection to get a public IP-address so Network accepts the connection. Perhaps nothing to do with your problem, but also we experience a lot of PDA users having no problem with pre-WM5 devices and much problems with WM5 devices and VPN

Success with L2TP/IPSec VPNs?

Has anyone had any success with L2TP/IPSec VPNs and Windows Mobile 5 or 6? I have no problems with getting PPTP to work but have NEVER had any success with L2TP/IPSec. I have valid Client & Server Certificates but I have never been able to get a connection; in fact the HTC Wizard I have never even attempts to make a connection (I have a sniffer on the Ethernet port my Wireless AP is connected to). I have tried using Certificates & Pre-Shared Keys but the results are the same - The Wizard never attempts to connect, with PPTP it works every time.
The Server I am using is a Windows 2003 RRAS server and I have verified with a Windows XP Client that L2TP/IPSec works.
I have asked the question before but have not had any helpful replies. I would be grateful if anyone who has set this up successfully can let me know and maybe give me a run-down of the steps you used. I am not interested in any 3rd party VPN clients, it must be the built-in one.
Thanks
Andy
Hi
Yes I have had the same issue with both the wizard and now hermes tried wm5 and wm6. I think it maybe related to NAT-T translation as am unsure from my reading weather MS supports NAT-T on the mobile end. If data session is being NATed by your provider then this may be the cause. Probably need to check the ip packets comming from the phone to see what it is sending out. Is that what you did or is the sniffer at the other end.

It has nothing to do with NAT traversal. WM5 (and WM6 probably?) does NOT support NAT-T, however I am not attempting to get this working over NAT. As I said I have a put a sniffer on the Ethernet port my Wireless AP is connected to and my Wizard does not transmit anything when configured for L2TP/IPSec (except a DNS lookup for the VPN server name if I enter it's DNS name as opposed to it's IP address). With PPTP it works and I can happily see the packets it transmits on the sniffer.
This is really frustrating as it looks like no one has ever got this to work
I had a HP iPAQ 6365 previously with Windows Mobile 2003 and I managed to get it working on this quite easily

I now have this working on both the wizard and the hermes.
I am a bit confused with your last response as ipsec port 4500 is nat-t and is required and is being transmitted by both the wizard and hermes in my case.
My setup maybe somewhat different to yours as I have a windows sbs2003 server running isa and rras. It is sitting behind an adsl modem router connected to the internet. The data connection on my phone is edge network on the wizard and HSDPA on the Hermes. Also have tried this via WiFi as well.
Steps I used
On server side router
On adsl modem router setup forwarding udp ports 500 ipsec, 4500 nat-t and 1701 l2tp and protocol 50 IPsec ESP. I selected l2tp/ipsec from its predefined list but noticed it missed udp 1701 so added this manually.
On Server.
ISA management selected Network Configuration right click and selected Allow vpn connections. This essentially setups the ip filters to allow incomming protocols and then sets up rras for pptp and l2tp ports.
In rras configure a preshared key by right click server/properties/security tick allow custome ipsec policy... and added preshared key.
On mobile
settings/connections
My Work Network
Edit my vpn servers and added new IPsec/L2TP connection.
Works a treat hope this helps
I did notice on another forum something about disabling the phone skin but I did not have to do this.

What ROM are you running on the Wizard? I am currently running a WM6 ROM but I previously used the official QTEK update (AKU 2.3 I think?) and then various WM5 AKU 3.3 ROMs. I have tested this with all of them and none have worked. If I could just see it attempt to connect I would be happy The fact is it doesn't transmit anything at all and all I see is the dialogue box on the Wizard saying 'Cannot Connect'....
With regards to NAT-T I read that the VPN Client in Windows Mobile 5 was not capable of this, I could be wrong however?
Andy
Sorry didn't have signature updated I'm running WM6 MBE on the wizard and WM6 Black on the Hermes
Ok I am still confused can you tell me exactly how you are connecting to your work network. Wifi or gprs.
Can you check also.
Under settings/connections/advanced/select networks make sure you have a separate ie different connections for the internet and private network. The Intenet settings will be your service provider grps settings.
For the private network mine is set as My Work Network. Edit this and make sure sure you do not have any modem connection listed ie we want to make sure it goes out over our existing connection and does not try to make a new connection. Make sure the vpn tab has your vpn settings as required they must be listed here and not under the Internet connection.
If you are using WiFi you must make sure the network setup is Connects to: The Internet and not set to Work. If it is work the VPN will not connect. You can not change this on the fly need to disconnect and setup again.
PM Me When you get to work given time diff I should be home. Might be able to test connection to my server at home then can check logs etc
Also use Task manger v2.7 to view netsats on phone to confirm udp ports and ip routes etc. It will show you if the phone is indeed sending should see upd ports 500 4500 and 1701 being used.

I am using WiFi, this is all in a test environment so I have full control over everything. Under Connections I have 'My ISP' and 'My Work Network' listed. 'My ISP' has a modem entry, 'My Work Network' has no modem but has a VPN listed with the IP Address of the VPN server and set to L2TP/IPSec using a certificate on the device (I have tried with pre-shared key also). The WiFi entry is configured as 'Connects to The Internet'.
I enable the WiFi and verify I have connectivity, I then go to Connections, click on My Work Network, 'Manage existing connections' select the VPN tab, hold down the stylus on the entry and click connect and I almost immediately get the dialogue box saying 'cannot connect'. If I edit the VPN entry so it is PPTP it works every time. As I said I have a sniffer on so I can see what the Wizard transmits and it when set to L2TP/IPSec it doesnt transmit anything whatsoever, with PPTP I can capture the whole conversation.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Andy
Ok I have now also tried using certificates and your right it does not seem to sending any info at all. It might ahve something to do with checking the certificate store first I ahve had issues before with Cisco vpn and certificates you have to get the nameing and certification justs right before it even starts the connection.
So first thing lets try pre shared keys as I have got that working. I will PM you my server details if you wish to try that first.

There is a brief flash of 'connecting' when you click connect but then the 'Cannot Connect' dialogue box appears, nothing gets transmitted. I have tried entering different IP addresses (public, private etc) just to see if it will transmit anything - it doesn't regardless of the IP address I enter.....

check your pm
Are you sure the wireless ap is actually passing the ipsec/l2tp traffic.
Working, well sort of.....
After a lot of messing around I now have this working, at least partially........
Following a soft-reset I can connect to a Wireless network OK (either a new one or one that is pre-configured), I can then connect the VPN using L2TP/IPSec. I can also manually disconnect the VPN and re-connect without any issues. However, when the wireless is disconnected (i.e. turned off from CommManager) and then re-connected the VPN will never work again, unless the Wizard is soft-reset.
Does anyone know what is likely to be causing this? some application in memory or a registry 'state' entry
Does anyone else see this behaviour?
Andy
I had exactly this with L2TP/IPSec on the MDA Vario II, but the same settings work as they should on my Athena.

HI!
How can you DISCONNECT?? Do you get a "Disconnect" button or menu item somewhere??
How do you know you are connected to VPN?
Thank you,
Dmitry.
A bit late but...
I have a possible solution to the fact it doesn't send ANY traffic on a connect attempt - on my XDA mini S (HTC Wizard) it requires me to put something in the 'domain' field on the username/pwd screen before it will start the IPSec negotiation....
Now I just have to get it o complete the process with the sonicwall...

Revisiting this
I can't get PPTP going on my HD2. Thoughts?
bumping this message
I have tried all the usual vpn software (for 3g connectivity) the only third party software that connects is the ncp software, but I get stuck because it wont accept a challenge response grid.
Symantic - won't auth
Green something - doesn't connect
MS VPN - doesn't connect
I have been able to connect in the past with an iPhone, but without a java i can't connect to most motorola hardware devices at work so it's useless. I'm testing a G1 on 1.6 now and it fails to connect also. Going to try openvpn today sometime. MY friend has his Eris working, so I know droid OS works.
I work for a large company and switching vpn hardware is out of the question, so if anyone has a 3g resolution for winmo, I won't have to trade my HD2.
Hi,
L2TR VPN with the Windows Mobile is working !!
The trick with L2TR VPN on WM is to use: a IP address (and NOT a hostname)
Strange, because using a hostname with PPTP VPN on the Windows Mobile it works.
With the trick L2TR works perfectly.

Hello. This is my first foray into VPN on Win Mo. I can establish a PPTP connection between my Imagio (stock Win Mo 6.5 R1) and my SBS 2008 server. I can ping the server and can browse the company web page. But I am having no luck accessing file shares. I have Schaps Network Plugin installed, but it doesn't see/can't access the shares. Will switching to IpSec VPN work? If so, any guidance on how to set it up on SBS 2008.

PPTP VPN not working?

Hi Guys,
i have access to a few VPN servers incl. my own in Europe and a few strong VPN accounts.
But once i connect with PTPP VPN - i get a little traffic back and then it stops completely. I do not have problems with other platforms (Mac, PC, iPhone etc)
It happens both on WiFi and 3G etc.
Anyone have VPN working?
(Firmware .16 UK Generic)
ohh - and L2TP can't negotiate security with my router from the X10 - rest of my devices can..
Damn this X10 is full of issues.
its broken completely
i can get it to connect to witopia via 3g, no traffic in and out
turn on wifi, wont connect at all.
VPN for X10 as it stands is DOA
seems like it is a known problem even in A2.1

I made a new profile on my Mikrotik Router - that allows connection without encryption - and that seems to work for now.
But my SIP does not work - getting a lot of microphone feedback - from Fring, SipDroid and other SIP clients :-(
@klarsen
How did u get pptp working ??
my X10 wont connect to my Bintec R1200 Router
My Ipod connects without problems using Wifi and my Iphone connects over UMTS. My X10 is unable to connect.
The Buildin PPTP Client is very very trashy. There are no settings for encryption exept "on/off". PPTP uses serval encryption methods. The same with the authentication. The Error Messages are such as useless.
I Tryed to switch off encryption, tryed all authentication methods (none,PAP,CHAP,MSCHAPv1 (v2) )
What i need to enter in "DNS Searchdomains" ??
But the phone says, it cant connect to my network. I Tryed it over UMTS and over the Wifi Accesspoint from my neighbour.
Why the Linux&Co Guys are not able to write an PPTP Client like one on the Iphone or in Winmobile ? Some Touchtaps and the tunnel is Up.
I had big trouble to set up a pptp tunnel on my Nokia N800 (Linux Maemo) , too.
Greetings
Chris
