PPTP VPN not working? - XPERIA X10 General

Hi Guys,
i have access to a few VPN servers incl. my own in Europe and a few strong VPN accounts.
But once i connect with PTPP VPN - i get a little traffic back and then it stops completely. I do not have problems with other platforms (Mac, PC, iPhone etc)
It happens both on WiFi and 3G etc.
Anyone have VPN working?
(Firmware .16 UK Generic)
ohh - and L2TP can't negotiate security with my router from the X10 - rest of my devices can..
Damn this X10 is full of issues.

its broken completely
i can get it to connect to witopia via 3g, no traffic in and out
turn on wifi, wont connect at all.
VPN for X10 as it stands is DOA

seems like it is a known problem even in A2.1
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4706
I made a new profile on my Mikrotik Router - that allows connection without encryption - and that seems to work for now.
But my SIP does not work - getting a lot of microphone feedback - from Fring, SipDroid and other SIP clients :-(

@klarsen
How did u get pptp working ??
my X10 wont connect to my Bintec R1200 Router
My Ipod connects without problems using Wifi and my Iphone connects over UMTS. My X10 is unable to connect.
The Buildin PPTP Client is very very trashy. There are no settings for encryption exept "on/off". PPTP uses serval encryption methods. The same with the authentication. The Error Messages are such as useless.
I Tryed to switch off encryption, tryed all authentication methods (none,PAP,CHAP,MSCHAPv1 (v2) )
What i need to enter in "DNS Searchdomains" ??
But the phone says, it cant connect to my network. I Tryed it over UMTS and over the Wifi Accesspoint from my neighbour.
Why the Linux&Co Guys are not able to write an PPTP Client like one on the Iphone or in Winmobile ? Some Touchtaps and the tunnel is Up.
I had big trouble to set up a pptp tunnel on my Nokia N800 (Linux Maemo) , too.
Greetings
Chris

VPN over WiFi connection

Hi
I searched the forums for info, seems that others have had issues trying to connect a VPN session over WiFi. Basically, my wifi (internet) is connected, the 'Connect VPN' option appears in the 'Connectivity' bubble, but tapping 'connect vpn results in the unit trying for a while to connect and then giving up with no error.
Probably yet another XDA bug. My device is the XDA IIs (Blue Angel).
Anyone got a VPN going over wifi?
For the record, it (VPN) works fine over GPRS, although the implementation is shockingly bad. You cant hit boxes on yr lan via IP, it drops the VPN the moment you try. I guess i'll have to set up some hosts file to fool the sack of crap into realising that it needs to head down the VPN to get to said ip.

Check your ip's, they must be in different subnets at each end of the vpn eg (192.168.1.--- >>>><<<<192.168.0.---). If they are both in the the same range then packets won't be routed correctly.
I use vpn over a wifi lan every day, and it works like a dream (on an xda2 with soket wifi card).
Hi
Yeah, they are in different subnets, still refuses to connect. God knows. The wifi implementation on the Blue Angel is bugged to hell so I suspect this is just another bug.
Nigel
I can get my VPN to connect.
My M2000 is connected to my local lan via wifi (192.168.0.0) and I have set up a VPN to my work lan (172.16.0.0).
The vpn connects and shows as connected in the connection dialog bubble.
However, I can't see/ping anything on my work network.
The PPTP NDISWAN Miniport adapter shows as not connected.
Using xvIpconfig i can see that there are two active adapters.
One is my wifi card...all ok there.
The other is called RAS VPN Line 0.
It seems to have a correct IP address, subnet mask and default gateway for my work network but it says that DHCP is disabled.
Also the adapter address is 00-00-00-00-00-00...that can't be right can it ?
VPN
hi guys, have you made any progress with the vpn and the blue angel. I am having the same problem - VPN appears to connect fine and then drops without any errors etc. to make matters worse i deleted all 02 connections so now i can't even see the vpn connection. Help!!!

Has anyone got a VPN connection to work with a T Mobile MDA?

I am trying to establish a VPN connection but cannot get the connection to work.
I am using the built in MS VPN client of Win Mobile v5.0 (5.1.1700 build 14352.0.1.0)
I am having real problems getting a VPN connection set up with our network.
I have tried both PPTP and L2PT
When L2TP, I was authenticating with a preshared key
Firewall logs show PPTP negotiation successful, and issues a VPN IP address to the device
It can ping the firewall external interface, but times-out trying to reach an internal address
The VPN session is established, but the firewall logs don't register either deny or allow traffic for each internal ping request, rather the firewall packet error count increments for each failed attempt.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I had problems with PPTP - gave up
I hate the way Windows mobile labels connections.
I connect to many customers with PC Anywhere, VNC, SSH etc and I have access via serveral different windows PPTP VPN.
Like you I setup the details in connections and try to dial.
Nothing seems to happen. The connect option does not change to disconnect. So I assume it is not connected.
I have a feeling these connection do not work over WIFI. and perhaps work over T-mobile 3g only, to maximise data revenues.
Seems very buggy to me. I would really like someone to post a working example/Instructions. Can I get a refund on my MDA PRo?
MS please note it is not a connection to my work or an internet connection it is to a customer for remote support, likewise I often connect remotely to my home via PPTP from my office.
confirmed VPN works over t-mobile 3g not Wifi
SEems the VPN links only work over 3g not Wi FI.
I'm using a PPTP connection over either 3G of WIFI depending on te active connection.
- When WIFI is active the PPTP connection connects using WIFI (I can switch off the phone, so it must be using that one)
- When no WIFI connection is active it automatically connects to 3G first, and than starts the PPTP session
In network management I'v set:
Internet:
Internet (the one containing the 3G connection)
select 'this network connects to the Internet' on the proxy tab.
private network:
My Work (the one that contains the vpn connection)
do NOT select 'this network connects to the Internet' on the proxy tab.
So as you can see, nothing special (I'm using a Qtek 9000 with standard Wm5 ROM)

VPN through 3G problem

I have problem with VPN connection to my privat network.
VPN connection works if I am on cable, wifi, but whan I am connected over 3G, HSDPA, than my connection works for about 5 seconds and than I hear sound from WM6 side that my 3G connection was broaken.
I can go to WM side and try with VPN connection there and it wont connect. But strange thing is, that if my VISTA is shutdown than I CAN connect with WM6 to my VPN server.
Please help if sombody had the same problem...
bye
Matkosan
I setup Hamachi yesterday on my Shift, on both the WM and Vista sides of the device and it worked perfectly. Of course, each "side" looks like a completely different node on the network, but it was really cool to remote desktop into my home and office machines from VM.
Regards,
Dave
Which VPN client software and version are you using? Or is this window PPTP vpn?
I had some problems with Cisco VPN Dialer client and the pasword manager function of the finger print reading software. Once I turned off the password manger function both the VPN dialer and finger print reader are happy to coexist. ( issue might not be problem if you are not using a RSA fob like I have to)
I am using both on my shift Cisco VPN for work and the Windows PPTP connection to reach my home network. So I can confirm that they both work from Vista and that windows PPTP works from WM6.
Nothing special, just window PPTP vpn client. My internet connection works perpectly, but when I make a VPN connection, 3G just drops the line and than reconects when I disconnect VPN connection... But VPN is allways working for about 5 seconds, a few successful pings...
I just used the magic button FN+F3 and whn vista come up i have the same problem. That means that tre problem resides somewhere in WM part. I am still looking... The problem could be that my service provider and my contry are not on the shifts list, so there could be some connecion settings problems... On my other sony vaio the same data card and HSDPA connection and VPN works OK.
Now I am playing with WM side. I can establish VPN connection to my server, bat as soon as I try to send over some data it simply diskonects 3G connection and that establish it again, without VPN connection afcourse.
So my connection to VPN is working, but when I start internet explread try to conect to any web site, 3G connection restarts.
Any suggestions or somthing....

Hi.
Is there a fix to this? I am getting exactly the same problem. 3G works for surfing on vista and exchange push/browsing on WM side - As soon as I put a pptp VPN across to the work network, the 3G on the WM side drops, and if I am looking at m network connections in Vista, the "LOCAL AREA CONNECTION 2" network "card" disappears from network settings and the VPN stops.
If I disconnect the VPN, the 3G connection restores itself and I can browse again.
any help appreciated as I need pptp to work so I can ditch my laptop!

Have you tried going into the TCP/IP properties of the VPN connection, then 'Advanced' and removed the tick from 'use default gateway on remote network'. That fix the problem for me.

Yes, I did that, but then the internet works fine and the VPN and the 3G stay up okay, but everything seems to go to the local internet and nothing goes via the VPN tunnel.

Hi,
Probably you have to change the MTU settings in the Local Area Connection, here's the command:
netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1440 store=persistent
1440 is only a suggestion. If you low more the MTU you will notice a decrease in speed/bandwith but 1440 will be unnoticeable and will let VPN connections work.

Have you actually got a VPN session working? From what I can see, the problem is the way that the Vista side uses the modem.
If I do a route print from Vista with the VPN up, it doesn't add any routes, so sends all traffic to 192.168.160.1, which appears to be the IP of the modem/WM side of the device.
If I manually put in
ROUTE ADD 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 192.168.99.1
Which is the IP of the VPN router, all traffic gets routed out down the VPN and it works for about 5 minutes, then the "Local Area Connection" network card in Manage Networks, disappears. If I then drop the VPN (because strangely it stays up) the LAC card comes back...

I didn't tried to establish a VPN with my Shift, but I found this MTU problem with many GPRS and 3G connections when establishing VPN (PPTP and also IPSEC ones).
I don't see how to help you more, sorry

vista utilizes ICS from WM6 to get the connection. that's why you see 192.168.0.1
We had a similar problem with Cisco VPN Client constantly disconnecting when using 3G Cards. We use a Cisco ASA 5510.
One solution is to disable the Keep Alive function in the ASA for the specific VPN Profile.
Hope that helps!
Try your Networks VPN APN - it could be an IP conflict.
I tried cisco vpn client over hsdpa and it worked.
I still have problem connecting with microsoft PPTP client. After few seconds connection vista-wm just drops and comes back again when PPTP client disconects.
Problem is ICS from WM6 in my appinion...
Please help me

WM6 won't connect to PPTP VPN over gprs or wifi

Hi,
I am trying unsuccessfully to connect to a PPTP VPN using the VPN client built into my new HTC TyTN II.
Wifi - I can connect using a WinXP SP2 laptop using wifi through my home linksys wireless router (which has PPTP passthrough enabled) using the standard Win XP vpn client. When I try with my TyTN II, I can browse ok but if I set up a VPN connection I get "VPN server problems. Verify your username and password, etc"
GPRS - If I try to connect over GPRS, I connect to Orange GPRS but when it tries to connect to the IP address of my VPN server, I get the same VPN server problem error message. (As a side issue, I asked Orange to enable my account for vpn which they did, sent a SIM update and told me to change my apn to 'internetvpn' instead of 'orangeinternet')
As I can connect through my wifi connected laptop, it seems to point to my WM6 vpn client but my forum searches suggest that the WM6 client works ok. Oh, and yes, I have checked that I am using the correct vpn username and password!
Any thoughts greatly appreciated - the ability to maintain some linux servers was my main reason for getting this phone!

Bump!!! Same problem here. I have all the proper ports open on my router and still no luck.
I've been trying to resolve this with the people that manage my vpn server which is my case is a Watchguard firewall - apparantly Watchguard isn't compatable with PPTP on WM6 and they have suggested using IPSec and have provided me with a client (not that I've got that working yet either!)
I suggest you contact the vendor of your vpn server and ask them whether they are compatable and how a WM6 client should be configured. Post anything you find out here for the benefit of others.
WM6 don't connect to VPN over GPRS/ WiFi
Friends...
I have the same problem... the VPN server is Windows Server 2003... My PDA has WM6 (with in-build VPN client)... then VPN PPTP would work OK... but What is the wrong??
Regards...
I also could not connect on vpn over GPRS and got error message, but after I tested all installed programs I have found out that my SPB GPRS Monitor was the reason for the errors. So I killed it.
Now VPN over GPRS connects and looking into register I see that I am really connected i.e. I got DNS server IP, I got name of the local network and dynamic IP for my HTC, but nothing works. As I have found out from server guys they see me but my dynamic IP is not logged in server DNS, so no program sees me and I can not work.
Can somebody help?
Same
I have a similar problem but the difference is that i don't even receive an error message. When i click connect NOTHING happens!! The wifi i am using is an open network but I must connect to vpn to connect to the internet.
Please help as i really need to get this working...
I have been trying to iron this out with IT at my office as well. I have been trying to get WM6.1 VPN working for nearly a year.
I have a TyTnII and my IT office just bought some kind of WM6.1 Motorola/Sprint Smartphone as well which they actually asked me about setting up for them.
The problem what I am experiencing is that I CAN connect to the VPN server (I use one of the TaskMan progs that has ipconfig built it, and I am getting an appropriate IP from the VPN server). BUT I can't browse ANY intranet sites via PIE or Opera Mobile 9.5. Whenever I try to browse to an intranet site I just get nothing, browser does nothing for ~10min then gives timeout error.
I have heard that this has to do with an inbuilt error in the PPTP module of the VPN client that incorrectly makes VPN server requests using the IP address assigned by the GPRS/EDGE/3G/etc. connection rather than the IP address assigned by the VPN connection, obviously will cause problems!
Anyway, we are investigating 3rd part VPN clients...
Only IPSEC works
I also made many tries to get vpn working over BT PAN profile.
The only configuration which worked for my was IPSEC with the Safenet SoftRemote-LT Client on PC.
With the windows native pptp based vpn does not work .
I got the error code 721 what means that the GRE protocol (frame type 47 on port 1721) does not pass through. This seems to be the the real problem of the packet filtering components of the WM device. The problem is not related to bluetooth or PAN Driver, because it behaves in the same way if you try to do it over USB port. No way.
You guys might want to check out my post about getting my PPTP VPN working and actually syncing ActiveSync on a fixed schedule regularly over VPN.

Getting what you want to work over VPN requires work URL Exceptions so that the traffice is properly routed.

Watchguard does support PPTP, your IT guys just need to configure it. As for IPSec which would be awesome because there is an app call Greenbow that will connect you over 3G doesn't work with Watchguard. You can only connect using their own client for it which needs a license and isn't support on Windows Mobile. They got a hate email from me for that crap.

VPN Pptp over wifi in HTC Leo

Hi!
I have been trying to connect to my to vpn pptp server (witopia.net) for 2 days. I tried every combination that i could think, but there must be something i am doing wrong. I think the mobile is trying to connect to the vpn server through gsm because everytime i try to connect the gsm signal bars disappear for a few moments. How can i make sure that the vpn connection goes through wifi?
I have managed to actually connect to the vpn server, but i cannot access websites like facebook and youtube from the Leo (I live in China and they are blocked). I am able to access blocked services through my iphone and laptop through the same vpn connection.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
PPTP on WM6 is a major problem. Especially if the server (and most do) required MPPE. Its one of the few niggles I have about WM. If you own the server your best setting up the conection using L2TP/IPSEC.
Or if you dont own the VPN server, and have a server laying around the house (as I do) you could set up your server to use the PPTP VPN then set there server as a Proxy, and connect WM6 to the server via proxy...so basically WM6>Proxy>VPN>interwebs
Hi Jagnet, Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately i am not able to use Ipsec/L2TP in China, only PPTP works fine with blocked sites.
After trying many combinations, there is a step that i havent been able to figure it out.
Once i am in Start > Settings > Connections (tab) > Connections (icon) > Advanced (tab) > Select Networks, How do i select the WIFI connection in "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using" opcion? . On the modem tab i only can choose "celullar line", "Celullar line (GPRS)" or "Hayes Compatible on COM1:", there is nothing about WIFI there, so when i try to connect at the vpn server specified in "Programs that automatically connect to a private network should connect using", the phone seems to be trying to connect via GPRS.
¿Any ideas?
Thanks

having similar issues with HD2. CMCC as well, in China.
I am getting a proxy IP address if I check on ipchicken.com, etc
but I am not able to open FB.
I am not using the PPTP option, but using their SSL service with
openVPN. but STILL not working..
right now on support chats with witopia.
VPN PPTP is simply broken in WM. It will work, but only with no encryption at all, which beats the purpose.
First of all sorry for bumping this old thread. But I have been looking and it seems kinda close to what I`m doing, oh a little new to vpn.
I have managed to sucessfully connect the HD2 via VPN in connections only when on the lan (outwith I need to contact O2 to get it enabled apparently). I setup a dialup connection in Win 7; HD2 says I`m connected to the VPN.
However heres the thing. Am I right in thinking that folders by default have to be shared. Therefore when using resco I can see network folders anyway, when connected to wifi.
So how would I prove that I can see folders shared to the VPN and not on the LAN as I cant seem to prove whether I`m seeing the folder via LAN and not on the VPN?
Sorry if its confusing but perhaps you get my drift? Or am I missing the point entirely....
