I have been pulling my hair out.
I have a Cingular 8525, unlocked, with WM5 (in reference to ROM, it is basically stock with exception to the unlock). I use it while working in Russia. While in the US I am able to use the phone connected via bluetooth to provide internet access to my laptop, no problems whatsoever. Smooth.
While in Russia, after following the providers instructions (MTS and Beeline) for GPRS settings. I am unable to connect to their GPRS networks.
The question.....
Are there settings and modifications made by the "Standard Cingular ROM flash" that are keeping me from connecting on a non Cingular GPRS network?
Any ideas/input from any GPRS gurus????
To note...I have tried using the "disable Cingular proxy" already with no success.

I currently don't have a data plan, however I wanted to take advantage of the 801.11b feature on my home network etc. Everytime I connect through WiFi, it tries to go through Cingular GPRS. Is there a way to get online through my network and not Cingular?
I too don't have a data package and also suffered constant unwanted GPRS connections. Since installing the new ROMs, which I assume don't come with the GPRS settings, WiFi works fine.
do I have to install the new ROM for WiFi to work? Where can I get this new ROM?
First, go to Settings, Connections, Advanced, Select networks, and change the first option to "My work network" and this will force it to go through Wifi.
When I had this problem, it still wouldn't work. For some reason, some routers need you to give them DNS info. Call your ISP and ask them what the IP address for their DNS server is. Put this in your router's DNS settings and it will work.
There is nothing wrong with the wifi in the Cingular ROM. A new ROM will not help you.
So this is close to the 'problem' I'm having. My MDA (t-mobile vario) latches on to a wifi network in the area, and I can't figure out how to change it to the network I want it to connect to (other than physically moving to a location that the other networks aren't available).
I always figured it would be listed in settings->wireless LAN. That seems to be display only (the entries are greyed out). Shouldn't there be a listing of detected networks? Shouldn't there be a way to enter a non-broadcasted SSID?
Well, pfft. I didn't search hard enough.
Settings->Connections->Network Cards

I understand what you are all saying but my experience with the I-mate Rom locked up my Router, the new Qtek rom worked first time. I didn't need to search for any settings.
Same
Same here,
First connection no problem but if I want to connect a second time I need to Reset my AP.
Any suggestions.
tnx
specs:
Qtec 9100: 2.17.7.2 WWE
2.07.10
AP: D-link DWL-900AP+
Sorry can't help, mine works OK. Try Qtek Rom 2.17.7.2.WWE

Forgive me if this has afterall been asked before, copious use of the search function has returned nothing of any use or in most cases, any relation.
I've recently aquired an O2 XDA IIs, unlocked, and I'm using it with my T-Mobile sim card. I'm trying to access the internet via the WiFi connection, but every time I attempt to connect (for example with MSN Messenger) it tries to connect via GPRS. I've tried making a new connection in settings, or editing existing connections, and yet all I'm presented with to connect through are these:
Bluetooth Dialup Modem
Cellular Line
Cellular Line (GPRS)
Generic IrDA
Hayes Compatible on COM1:
^I don't see a "Wireless LAN" option there.
If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be -very- much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

wi-fi has a setting of it's own in the connection manager which needs to be switched on before you can connect to anything.
You need to connect to your wi-fi network, then activate MSN Messenger etc
I have a k-jam, which was not purchased via Telstra Australia. My service provider is Telstra Australia, and after applying the Telstra customisations, I am not able to use web applications over 802.11g. The wireless connection is made, but all connections are forced to GPRS, regardless of the network settings. Specifically, I have tried the following -
1. Hard reset the device and skip the operator customisation.
2. Set up the wireless connection (802.11g in may case). Everything works as expected.
3. Apply the customisation, using Telstra.cab (from the i-mate site).
4. Change both connection settings back to "My work network".
5. Disable the phone, to prevent GPRS connections.
6. Open PIE and attempt to open an external site. The "Cannot connect" dialog is shown.
The 802.11g connection is still present, but PIE will not use it. I have tried messing with the connections parameters, to no avail. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?
I'm about to compare the Telstra cabs with some others, to see if I can locate the setting. Can someone please let me know of a k-jam operator CAB which definitely does work with 802.11g.
Appearantly, SoftBank Japan disabled the wireless modem function on the X01HT that ships now in Japan for the last 3 days. The 'Wireless Modem' app is missing on the Start Menu.
I've been trying to connect via Bluetooth, but without the required steps with 'Wireless Modem' I had no success. Running the same sim in a SoftBank cell phone with Bluetooth enabled successfully allows me to connect my Laptop via the phone. This function missing in the X01HT is really annoying.
Anybody have any idea how I could get the 'Wireless modem' app installed/running without flashing the ROM?
I've been looking for this app too... what's the progress, did you find this app?.
Mee too... SoftBank's ROM really sucks. I'll check this soon, This app may be in other provider's extendend ROMs or somewhere...
The Cingular EXTROM has a wireless modem install you could try.
Hi,
I just purchased the htc 8125 from cingular at full retail WITHOUT a plan
for use on my trips to Hong Kong using my sim card from a Hong Kong
provider.
While in the USA I would like to use the 8125 to access the internet without
a sim card installed and without cingular service. Wifi does recognize available
networks but I cant open any web pages.
Can you please tell me how to configure the phone to do this. I believe it is
by default programmed to use cingular's access services but I want to configure it to work as a stand alone device similar to a laptop looking for wifi signals to connect to the web.
Please help! Thank you.
David
WiFi is not configured to be used with anything of cingular...WiFi is a standalone feature in the PDA...the reason that you couldn't see a web page could possibly mean that the network you connected to had a WEP encryption...u must connect to an open network in order for it to work...
try this
I have been having problems with my wifi too...the only way that I can get it to work is to say the wifi connects to 'work' and to say that programs connecting to the internet should connect using 'My Work Network'
Turn on your WiFi
Start->Settings->'Connections' tab->WiFi or Network Cards->tap the network you want to use->under 'connects to:' chose: 'Work'->next->next->finish->ok
Start->Settings->'Connections' tab-> Connections->'Advanced' tab->programs connecting to the internet should connect using: 'My Work Network'->ok
hope this will work for you and if anyone knows how I can get around having to change this every time I want to go from GPRS to WiFi I would be much appreciated.
Haha - I just found it...someone else just posted it
