Hi.
Having not had much dealings with mobile devices since the early ericssons, I took the plunge this week and managed to obtain a KJam. So far I'm pretty impressed, however despite spending most of today reading posts and experimenting I've have yet to get more than a couple of seconds of wireless surfing through my home network. I've read a number of posts here and this seems to be the place to ask, so here goes: (apologies for the long post)...
KJam info:
ROM v1.1.9.3
ROM date 9/16/05
Radio version: 01.01.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM version: 1.1.9.104
Network
DLINK DI-624+ wireless router running in mixed mode SSID broadcast disabled WPA-PSK TKIP encryption.
Problem
I'm able to authenticate and obtain an IP address - I've confirmed this based on the router logs and using vxIPConfig on the K-Jam. Mail operations and surfing then respond with Page not found / unable to find server messages, although the connection appears to maintained on both ends.
Occasionally I'm able to send /receive mail / load the IE homepage, however this is rarely achieved (roughly 1 per 20 attempts). Occasionally the GPRS connection is initiated when using IE / Pocket Outlook; this side of things works as expected.
To me it seems as though IE fails to recognise the WiFi connection, although I've noticed that when configuring the network it is not possible to uncheck IEE 802.1 network access when setting up for WPA-PSK TKIP authentication. Is this a possible reason for these issues?
I've spent the last day or so trying to get this working in vain so please any suggestions would be most gratefully received....
TIA
Solved?
As is the way with these things, I think I've sorted the problem.. It was probably obvious to some but something of a surprise to me...
Under the Wireless Lan applet in the Connections Settings I fiddled with the Power Save Mode. I hadn't moved this from the default midway point, but tried with the slider set to Best Performance. And then.... I didn't have to do anything else. Connected as before, however now the connection doesn't drop after 3 seconds.... Mail and internet all work no problem, Skype connects and signs in (haven't tried calls yet). I'll post back if I hit problems again, but I'm pretty hopeful so far (and determined to try the easy things first next time lol).
Hi Guys,
I guess this is my first post in this forum.
Does anyone have any problems connecting the HTC Touch HD device to a router with WPA-PSK String setting?
When I entered the details of the Wi-Fi setting, it stucks in the 'Connecting' status.
I did try disabling the security in my router and the device is connected successfully.
Help! Help! Help!
Any assistances will be much appreciated.

Try using a shorter string and see if that helps.
I remember having trouble with my Wizard and WM5. A connection string that was too long would cause this.
My Touch HD connects fine with WPA-PSK, but cannot connect using WPA2, whereas my Wizard with WM6.1 connects WPA2 quite fine.
Anyone else have this problem?
thanks for your reply.
it is very strange though. I did try various settings of the password: 8 characters, 10 characters, 12 characters using WPA-PSK.
I cannot test WPA2 because my router does not support WPA2 .
hm.. ROM update probably
I have a 10 character wpa-psk string, on a US Robotics access point.
worked instantly.
How about the other settings, TKIP/AES etc?
no data encryption settings in my modem router. could that be a problem? But, my TyTn II is connected to the same modem router and I set it to WPA PSK String with TKIP encryption.
My modem router is quite old. I guess this December is his 5th anniversary .
I might try to connect to my neighbour wifi network tomorrow and check the connectivity.
Thanks guys. If any of you still have tips or instructions to fix this problem, that will be much appreciated.

any update on this issue? help required
I am currently using a HTC touch HD Orange UK with the latest ROM from HTC. I also tried DavideUK 6.1 V6 and 6.5 V7.0. In all cases, I could only connect to public wifi networks but always failed to connect to any WPA-PSK routers.
P.S.: I did try enabling/disabling WPA functionality using advance setting/tweaking tools for WM6.X
Has any one manage to solve this one?
Do we know which NIC is in the Touch HD?
Is there any driver update available?
is the WPA-SPK encryption-decryption done via hardware, software or a combination of both?
Thanks for any provided information.
Solution!!! here for Orange UK unlocked handset
Hi Every one, I finally found a solution for the Orange UK unlocked handset and WIFI with WPA-PSK encryption.
It seems like a contradiction but the only way to get it to work is by reintsalling the orange packages & settings on the top of any ROM you are using (tested with stock rom 1.14, 1.19 and DavideUCK WM6.5 V8). So no way to get away from Orange for the moment.
here is how I proceeded:
- installed ROM 1.14, 1.56 then DavideUCK WM6.5 V8
- installed Orange_UK_by_rabdo_v1.6.cab ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=311467) and Orangeworld_Fix_by_rabdo.cab (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316763)
P.S.: both seem required
- checked with Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v3.3.cab that WPA is DISABLED (Yes it is right, I read on some post that status DISABLED was the solution).
now the rest is basic networking by setting password, static or dynamic IP/gateway/router & DNS.
Remaining questions to Rabdo, Davideuck and the developers here:
- What in those 2 orange cab files solved the problem?
- Do Orange HTC Blackstone have a different hardware than factories? or are they using a software solution to handle WPA-PSK encryption instead of hardware encryption?
- are other branded Blackstone suffering from the same issues?
a BIG THANKS to Rabdo for those packages!!!!!!!
P.S.: no Orange splash screen is included in thos CABs ;-)
Just checked with my HD. It can't connect with WPA/PSK. WPA2/PSK is fine irrespective of key length. Looks crazy. Since my router supports WPA2, I never checked this earlier.
I could never connect to WiFi at work where a long key with funky characters is used (WPA2, AES), and according to our admins no WM device has ever been able to do that. Every other device works fine. So it seems like a problem affecting Windows Mobile in general, not just Touch HD.
I think the Edit Box where U enter the key only allows ascii. If U can bypass it then it should be possible. those deep into WM programming might be able to help.
I've had the HD for about 6 weeks now and it's been working fine with my home WIFI, which is WPA2-PSK. But in the last few days it has stopped working for some reason.
It still says connected, but whenever i try to go online or even just update the weather, the program says it's not connected. It's driving me mad
I hadn't changed any of the settings, so i don't know why it's started playing up. I've triple checked everything and the only thing out of the ordinary that i can notice is that my network key is 8 characters and that's what i enter in the appropriate place, but then when i go back in to check it there are 13 characters in the box. Where are these extra ones coming from? I can't tell what they are because it's asterixed out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because i'm fresh out of ideas!
Hi just have a new HD.
Everything works fine so far but i cannot connect to my router.
Its a brand new Dlink . Al my other devices connect perfectly (pc and htc diamond)
but my HD says its connected (shows IP etc...) but still i cannot connect to the internet or update the weather...
Any ideas ????
Ebola_virus,
Go to settings>Connections>Connections>Advances>Select Networks. Select My Work Network (For "Programs that automatically connect to internet use:")
Next time use search

Same problem here. This has been reported by too many people.. If you search you' ll find many many threads.
Worked fine, then without any change stopped working. WiFi reports it is connected but no program can use the internet.
Setting slider to full perfomance, using work instead of internet, enabling/disabling WAP security, hard resseting, reflashing nothing works!
At least one user reports "cycles" of good/bad operation without changing a thing !
I too am mad and wondering: anyone had it fixed through HTC service?
If you connect to an access point using the standard interface it will set encryption type as AES as standard (regardless of what your AP is set to)
If your access point is configured for TKIP encryption type then you need to manually go in and edit the settings like I have to in order for it to work.
hth.
Can connect but cannot surf
I have a wireless router that is set up using WPA-PSK. I can connect to the router with my HD, but when I use any browser nothing happens. When I go into the routers settings page I can see that my phone has an ip-nr but still nothing happens. Has anyone experienced this and solved the problem? Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem, followed your instructions (although didn't disable WPA in the advanced config tool, it was already disabled!!). It worked on reboot excellent, and I have a very long network key! Thank you very much for these instructions! :d

Wifi not working HTC HD2
Hi,
I am using HTC HD2.
I am presently in a university and we have a wifi network here. The wifi network can be accessed by entering a username and password. A proxy also needs to be entered in order to access the internet.
Most of the phones on the campus like iphone or other nokia and samsung phones are able to use the internet very easily. Setting for iphone users are as follows:-
1. Switch on wifi on your iphone
2. Select "Other..." in the list of networks
3. Enter "wifistudent" as the name of the network
4. Select security type as "WPA–PSK 2 Enterprise"
5. Put your username and password
And for Nokia E series the settings are:-
Create a new Connection Name - say e.g. wifi
Data Bearer: Wireless lan
Wlan network home: wifistudent
Advanced Settings (in options)
Enter Proxy Server Address (192.168.32.x) and Proxy Port Number (8080)
Network status: hidden
WLAN network mode: infrastructure
WLAN security mode: 802.1 xs
WLAN security settings:
WPA/WPA2: EAP
EAP plugin settings
1. EAP LEAP
[Options>edit]
User name: xxxxx
Prompt for password: no
Password: *****
2. EAP PEAP (disabled)
(all others disabled)
Based on above information, I want to ask you two questions:-
Question 1) I hope based on above settings for the other phones you can help me find how to configure wifi on my phone.
Question 2) Where do I enter the proxy server so that the wifi network uses the proxy server. Right now I was only able to set up a proxy server for GPRS connection. Not for my wifi connection.
I would quite thankful if you can let me know how to configure the wifi on my phone.
Regards,
Mohit Goyal
Lately I have been reading many post related to Wifi problems in the HD. I had the same. Even I was very near my router I couldn't connect to the net and the signal was very weak.
So I entered my router configuration and I found a solution.
Before, for security options I had: WPA-PSK [TKIP] then I changed to WPA2-PSK [AES] (of course you also have to change your HD connection configuratoin), and now it works great¡¡¡¡
Now I have all the bars for the signal and I can connect very easily.
Hope it works for other people
I have a similar WiFi connectivity problem, but after reading of the poor service provided by most vendors and HTC itself, I will try to gather some more experience with the problem before I contact HTC or my vendor, and hopefully find a solution. Bellow is my experience so far:
I own an HTC Touch HD since January and have a similar problem, only it surfaced last week. Before I had only used the WiFi connectivity briefly. The problems started after I installed an AP on my house expressively for the new PDA. The node is fully open and set to B/G/N protocols.
After a couple days of medium (couple hours per day) use the WiFi connection suddenly quit, the device would try to connect (the top bar showing the WiFi connection animation continuously) and after a few moments gave up with a dialog box stating the current network settings were wrong (even thou they worked fine a few hours earlier).
I tried several hot and cold resets, but only solved the problem after flashing a new ROM; even then the same symptoms reappeared after a couple of days of regular use. Again no re-setting would cure the problem, and now not even flashing the ROM again would work. Nonetheless, some hours latter the WiFi would connect perfectly with the same nodes it refused to before, and in very short time.
I have witnessed this cycle twice and have yet not been able to find a trigger for it, but will keep my eyes open for any tell tale signs, and post any findings here.
I could add to the above mentioned problems.
i got a new hd just few days back.
The wifi worked great. But now it doesnt.
I have disabled wifi, so can start it whenever i require.
I click on wifi button to enable it.
Then open opera, try any website.
it will open fine.
For instance say my email at gmail.com
Now after that if i try to open anysites or even continue with my mail, it shows error saying connection not available.
One of the workaround is to go back to toggele wifi off and switched it on.
Not sure if anyone faces a similar issue.
I's been about a week since my last post and I have already witnessed a couple of cycles of WiFi connecting perfectly and then not connecting at all.
No matter the settings I try after it decides not to connect, it won't. Even to nodes it had connected perfectly and fast jus minutes before.
I thought re-flashing might help but so far has proven ineffective. Once I thought some part of the non-volitile memory was causing the problem since after I cleared the memory I could connect for a while.
Any thoughts anyone?
Same problems here.
For the last hour I have been reading 10ths of threads here concerning WiFi problems.
My HD's WiFi worked fine on my home and outside for about 2 months. Now it doesn't. It reports connection, but no program can use the internet. At best, it seems to be able to exchange some Kbytes the for just a few seconds after a connection is established. Then nothing. Connected but unusable.
Tried everything Internet/My Work/My ISP, WAP enabled/disabled, soft/hard reset, everything.
When connected through ActiveSync everything works fine, all programs see internet.
Has anybody taken their HD to the service? Has any HTC service worldwide identified the problem as hardware and solved it by replacing something?

I have just encountered a similar problem, but already used wpa/wpa2 with aes. Have tried a hard reset with no joy. My old HTC Touch has no probs connecting via wifi nor does my laptop so I would surmise that the prob is with the HD and not the router.
I am going to try flashing with the latest version of Duttys 6.1 rom and see what gives.
Edit: Tried flashing with new rom with no success. Take a look at this post.

There are a couple of files to download but i only used the second ie this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1363759&postcount=2
Now no problems and can connect via wifi no probs, ip address assigned by dhcp.
Try to go into WiFi settings and move the power slider to max performance. I need to do it here to access my router. This happened also with my HTC TyTN II, with any recent radio firmware. The original WM 6.0 ROM and it's radio work fine in low power mode, but the new ones appear connected but are always at 1 Mbps and there's no traffic until you move the slider to performance mode.
You go into WiFi settings and you configure manual IP and DNS so as router.
DNS is important.
Whit manual configuration, Wifi work always.
(sorry for my english)

This is not a solution. I didn 't buy the device to be able to connect to my home WiFi only. What about public hotspots? Or hotels? Or whatever outside your home?
Hello all,
I've been searching trough this forum without finding the answer,
I've just bought a HD2 Leo and when I connect this little jewel to my wifi network, it works well for a few seconds (minutes sometimes) and then disconnect automatically.
It also create a conflict with my computers in the network..
I've changed the IP address for my computers, for my HTC, it doesn't change anything.
My removed the security (WEP) of the network just in case, it doesn't change anything.
I've allocated the DNS address of my Internet connection but doesn't change either.
(Yes, i've turn the mode to "best performance" )
Does somebody have the solution, it's really annoying having this HTC to surf on the net and not possible to surf more than 30 sec.
Many thanks for your help
What do you mean it creates a conflict? A conflict like 2 systems having the same ip-address?
Are you using DHCP or static ip's?
In my experience, the hd2 always gets 192.168.1.147. So make sure none of your pc's take that ip.
Hi,
I tought it was that, a conflict between 2 devices having the same IP address, that's why I allocated an IP address for every device (computer, HTC,...).
When I talk about a conflict, I say it disconnect the internet connection to my PC as well.
I'm using DHCP (no static IP).
do you have something ?
try updating the radio rom if you just bought the phone otherwise maybe you need to exchange.
I've changed it to Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2 is it the latest ?
anyone another idea ?
it's really anoying, I cannot use skype or another voip call because it's running 1 min maximum, no youtube,...
I have the same problem since i have installed the rom 1.66 NL
same problem here. Only time I didn't have this issue (or at least did not notice it ) was when I was still running the original Dutch 2.04 stock rom.
I've tried all Energy roms and used wifimonster. I have good to excellent signal upon connection and then, after a few seconds the complete signal falls away.
Returns a few seconds later and I regain good to excellent connection.
I repositioned my wifi router to a more open place, thinking the issue was related to that but it doesn't matter.
I tried the Wifi N setting, having a Linksys/cisco WRT610N router but it makes no difference either.
Suggestions well appreciated!
DicE
up,
it seems that I'm not the only one,
(maybe a stupid question, are you all from Belgium ? because I can see that DicEvsTytnII have proximus).
any help ?
Just load Energy 23569 ROM onto my Touch HD Touch and everything seems ok except Wi-Fi .. i can't connect to my home Wi-Fi after keying in the authentication passcode .. it just keep showing Red icon of WiFi ... i'm not too sure if there something to do with the Advanced Config settings ...
I have the same issue.
How is this solved ??
Thanks
Ciao

i have problem with wifi too.phone cant see wifi network even whan i stand right next to router.one time phone found network, but only poor signal and i wasnt be able to connect. wifi goes well on another mobiles like SE X10 and samsung JET. i changed several roms but problem stays.. i dont know what to do..thx
Htc hd wifi problems
I just guess it´s some kind of incompatibility with certain WIFI APs.
I tried several other now:
Netgear 834 - complete catastroph
T-KOM 500WV - runs immediately
So I think it´s the best to change the router.
The device:
Speedport 500V is at least the one that does the job in my network.
Fritz (2 types I don´t know exactly but little older though), Netgear (834), Sparklan - these did NOT WORK
Speedport W500V- just basic setting (WEP 128Bit, ASCII) immediatlety connected to the HTC. Tested with WFI-MONSTER.
I think I´ll get a hold of some of these, they are pretty cheap (20 €) here now.
Hope it helped a little
Ciao

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem the entire week last week. I tried upgrading the radio, downgrading the radio, several different roms, until I finally realized what the cause was.
Wifi would work right after the first hard reset after flashing a new rom or radio, but I noticed that it wouldn't connect to any of my wifi routers after installing all my apps and restoring configurations.
I noticed that after enabling "WPA authentication" on Advanced Configuration, wifi would stop working. Leaving it disabled would let it work normally. I don't understand why, but there you go. I haven't had a problem with any router since.
Hope this helps.
