I remember with my old Ipaq 4150 i could reassign memory from storage to programs. my current p3600i has a miserable 21mb of program space only, when everything else is all shut down. is there a way to reassign the many storage space i have to program use, with a 3rd party software or not?
since wm5 all storage is located in flash
and all normal memory is application memory
flash only got a limited number of writes before it dies
and writes ALOT! slower then application memory
but flash keep it's data even if all power is lost
there are programs to use application memory as a flashdisk for storage
but not the other way around
i would look into using less today items and today items which use less application memory
and possibly look in windows\startup for auto started programs which you dont need

At soft reset, I'm getting like 25mb program and 20mb storage memory, but the program memory start dropping drasitcly soon after. Is there anyway to manage the storage/program memory ratio like in WM2003SE?
After some normal use, my program memory drops to around 14mb and some apps (Skype) wouldn't start, meantime, I have 19mb of untouched storage sitting there doing nothing... I can't believe M$ removed the ability for the user to manage the memory usage, is there any registry trick that you can divide up the % of memory for program and storage?? Please help!!
p.s. I already have all my programs installed on the SD, and by normal use, I meant phone calls, SMS, calendar etc.. nothing major...
Hi, is there a way to adjust the memory usage for the program, like adjust the storage and give it to program. Not like xda, the prophet does have a slider for the memory but could not be adjusted. Is there anyway how to go over this ?
Prophet, as well as many new WM5 devices have (physically) separate program and storage memories. And thus there is no built in way to adjust the amounts of the two.
The Prophet has a 64MB Ram and a 128MB Flash Size with a storage size of 42.55. Where did the 44.01 MB program came from? Is there a way to increase the MB size for the program? Because I believe that even though you can install several program using the storage, a portion of the program memory gets filled up until at the critical level, which will later play an important part once you start running a program which needs a higher memory. Any remedy to this?
The 64MB RAM is what I think should be called 'box figure'. It's what's printed on the box.
In reality you get 50+ actual RAM at leas 10 of which go to various OS functions and the rest is left for running programs to use.
Under WM5 non of it is used for files, but when you run programs, even built-in ones there are sometimes memory leaks which means that even though you closed the program some of the memory (sometimes more them 1MB) remains occupied.
The only known way to fully reclaim memory is to soft reset the device. I do it on my Jamin once a week when I am left with 12-10MB free.
Unfortunately, there is no way to add RAM to device.
Hi all,
Could anyone please tell me the differences between the storage memory and the program memory? Yeah, I know this might sounds stupid and I also wish that the answer is really that straight forward.
I always thought that 'Program Memory' is suppose the memory quota for us to install application & softwares. Where, storage memory is just simply the portion of memory where we stores data that we creates.
But whenever I install applications, 'storage' is the memory which always to be used up. Yet, I can hardly use up my 'program' portion of memory...
Can anyone tell me why? and how to install applications in the program memory instead of storage memory?
Thank you very much.
Cheers!
Search would have helped a great deal here, FAQ.
Storage is Flash
Programs is RAM
WM5 works the same way as a desktop. It loads the OS from disk to RAM when you power it on. When you remove the battery everything is safely stored to disc, not RAM as WM2003 was. Battery can go flat, no backup battery needed.

..... so how do you save stuff to Program memory? Or is that just temp momory that stuff runs from when you execute it?
You can`t save stuff to program memory. The program memory is like the RAM in your PC,just used for temporary storage and running programs. The storage memory is like the hard drive in your PC,used for actually `storing` data.

So why do they bother displaying it on the memory settings?
And does that mean it's different to how it was on the XDA2? That used to have a slider allowing you to change the allocation for storage/program memory.
RE
I find storage memory is the one you need to watch out. As you install more programs whether to SD card or to Program memory the storage memory goes down
Too low storage memory and your system will not perform properly. Install programs with large file size first then follow by programs with smaller file size otherwise you'll encounter installation 'Not enough memory' if you do it the other way round
Here's a problem I don't understand:
How are most ppl able to install so many things on their HD2 and not use up memory space?
So my HD2 has a total of 193.43MB of Storage and 457.01MB of Program.
When I install games and programs and apps, I install them on the device. This takes up "Storage" memory.
I guess, what is the difference? And how can I choose between where (On device or micro) to install each type of game, apps, program?
1) What uses Program memory? What uses Storage memory?
2) If I install a game on the microSD, and do a flash to a new ROM, will I have to re-install the game on the microSD again?
You should keep a basic strategy:
Whatever prog belongs to the operating system (like HTCSense-hacks, GUIs etc.) or should work without storage card:
Install it to the main memory
Whatever prog is not operating system critical (games, browsers, navi-software, apps, photos, videos etc.):
Install it on the SD-Card (the setup in 99% allows You to choose between main memory and Storage Card). It will eat up little by little Your RAM (by adding values in the registry, icons regs in the startup-menu), but this might centuries ´till RAM is full.
Move Cashes to SD-card as described in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
and try to keep main data memory above 50 MB.
Maybe installing progs to the SD-Card might make progs a litlle bit slower (not much though) but this way You can install hundreds of apps on Your HD2 (and never forget: before installing a new prog make a full backup of the main memory e.g. with SPB-Backup and if the new prog crashes Your device restore. Also for this it is ALWAYS better to install a new app to SD-Card instead main mem).

Program memory is RAM that is used by the operating system when executing programs.
Storage memory is where apps are installed and are then available through your icon links.
Calls are made from ROM to storage and then executed in RAM.
There are a number of issues to bear in mind when deciding where to install apps.
Installing to mem card results in slower operation of the app.
Installing to mem card results in higher power usage and therefore drains the battery quicker.
Installing to mem card can result in operating system freezes and overall slowdowns.
Installing to mem card will establish app links with the operating system that won't necessarily be usable if you flash other OS ROMs. Fresh reinstallation of apps should always be done after a flash of any new ROM anyway to keep things clean and running smoothly and reduce operational glitches to a minimum.
Any backup and restore software should only be used when restoring to the same
ROM and never across a ROM change. Sync all items you can before and resync afterwards.
Only install to mem card those apps that force you to or when you have run out of main storage and similarly have no choice.
If you know you are going to install masses of apps from the outset then as had been mentioned install operating system critical apps to main mem and the rest as you can using mem card last.
This is all good practice and good housekeeping.
Great Post !
Great thread !!!
I always wonder if Storage and program memory can be modified.
It was a long long long time ago, it was possible with my palm pilot...
Is there an application for monitoring RAM usage ?
I have about 190 Mo of free Ram and 39 Mo of free program memory.

There is no real reason to monitor any mem usage unless you operate in a memory hungry fashion. And that will only occur with the install of numerous apps. If you run out of storage mem then that's the time to do something about it and if that doesn't happen, then don't worry about it because your phone won't know the difference.
would there be ever be a hack that can turn you memorycard into your mainmemory just likee the iphone haves built in memory.Because hate running out of memory on my windowsmobile phones and have the apps i use dont even really save to the memory card its always using the main memory

What apps are you talking about. most memory space goes to pics and music, which can be stored on the card. And you can install extract programs on your card instead of you internal memory.
fmadr
but that using up my memory i save everthing to my memory card but main memory still be draining it self dont know why
SD cards are only ever storage memory. The card behaves like a disk drive, that appears to be connected to the mount point '\Storage Card', or whatever your machine is configured to call it, there is a registry hack to change it if you want.
Storage space must be read into main memory, before the CPU can get at it. Access time is pretty quick, but nowhere near main memory speeds.
It's there for storing stuff as its name implies. Apps, data, movies, music, etc etc. It's not much use for anything else.
It sounds like you're confusing program and storage memory. If you're getting program memory errors, then you need to get a task manager and get better control of running applications/processes, or get a task manager that closes applications instead of minimizing them with the 'x' button.
If you are having storage memory issues, then you need to check for log files that might be hogging all the storage memory. Or get a utility like ClearTemp to empty out temporary folders. If you do a lot of streaming, sometimes you can get large stream dumps that aren't properly deleted and that hog a lot of memory.

You have probably some large log files, created by ActiveSync or some other program. Use SKTools or something similar to find it, clean Your main memory and disable the logging once You know where it comes from. That way it doesn't fill up Your main memory.

Ted You beat me to it by a minute

thanks using sktools way better in so good. oh and there any developers out there
SD-Card Driver 4 Read Speed
Hello all,
While mentioning SK-Tools ;
Not so long ago I stumbled over this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2915068&postcount=1
So use SK-Tools its benchmarking capabilities to test your SD-Card before(!) and after the 'driver' (tnyynt SD TuneUP) mentioned above is installed!!!
It's kinda technical and a lot of 'know how' is discussed, but the main thing = tnyynt SD TuneUP, I assure you, will boost your SD-Card READiNG-PERFORMANCE!!!
Ofcourse, making a backup in advance could make a difference for everyone installing this,
Senax
P.S. I did not make a backup in advance!
How many sms & email do you have, both of these save to the main memory, a few hundred+ will soon fill it up. Internet Explorer cache is the other one to check. These are the 2 biggest memory users.
Can you cook? If so Extendir endir may help in achieving more free Main Memory space...
Hope this helps.
they should make you be able to use you memory card as your main memory or least fix instead of worrying about the windowsmobile7series that not coming out in the end of this year.
