Hallo everyone,
I am completely new, when it goes around PDA.
Infact this O2 xda terra (herald wm6) is my first PDA.
I need teachers to tell me how things done with on my PDA.
Pleaaaaaassssssseeeeeeeeee.............
Here goes the first questions.
I have tried many programs (install, uninstall, deinstall, usw.)
Is wm just like windows xp? After many install- deinstall process? I mean, does it has registry- and leftover-files? Do they give slowdown effect or instability to my PDA? How can i clean them?
Is there a task manager and/or startup control, usw.?
Tips or hints or suggestions are welcome.
Thank you, thank you very much.
for cleaning up you can use a programm like "Sktools"
- or even better - hardreset when you know which programs you wnat to use
- or even best - choose a custom rom with your favourit apps.

Thank you very much.
SKtools is good.
I'll try the hard reset later. Now i want to try many things with my PDA then i'll hard reset it.
I'll study the links you've gave me.
But wow! that are complicated. I need some time 'till i can understand all of them.

HELLO,
IS THERE ANYWHERE ON THIS SITE WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD A COPY OF WINDOWS 2003SE SO I CAN REINSTALL IT ON MY SPV M1000.
PLEASE HELP.....................
Hello didgeridooplayer.
First, welcome to the forum!
Second: Please refrain from typing in all uppercase letters, it's considered shouting.
As to your question:
I saw you other post in the Himalaya forum, but I reply to this one because I don't know what causes the camera problem.
I don't think you can solve it by 'reinstalling' the OS. This is not a PC. Windows Mobile is embedded in ROM, and although you can upgrade it (because it's actually flash and not real ROM), to clean up the device hard reset is sufficient.
The OS could not have been damaged by any installed program like it can be on the PC.
Now, I am not sure but there may be a Himalaya ROM on the ftp:
ftp://xda:[email protected]
However, Windows Mobile ROM images are custom tailored to a device. It's not like Win XP where you just get a disk and install it on any PC. It has to be custom made by the OEM for each device.
If you already knew this stuff and my post sounded insulting in any way, I am sorry, I just got an impression from your post that you didn't quite understand the issue.
Windows Mobile n stuff
Hi, Firstly thank you for the reply and secondly sorry for the caps. No you have not offended in any way I am a complete newbie numpty and did not know about the things you mentioned I know my way arround a pc but the ins and outs of PDA's are somewhat of a mistery to me. Anyway the reason my cam did not work was because I did a soft reset before the pda installed all its customisations to get round the password problem and therefore it did not get chance to load its camera software or album etc etc. Anyway I am trying to get the guy who sold it to me on ebay to give me a refund but doesnt look to promising (bloomin Ebay is a pain in the bot) but I will see what I can do.
Thanks again...Tim
Hi didgeridooplayer.
Glad I could help.
If you can't get a refund here are a couple of things you can try:
1) If device was locked by password, hard rest should have cleared it and you shouldn't worry about installing the customization since the password has nothing to do with it (it's just some stuff like cellular provider settings and some extra apps the OEM chose to include). Unless the previous owner changed it.
2) Customization is stored on the 'Extended ROM'. This is part of flash that is normally hidden from the user. However with some registry tweaks it can be unlocked and used like extra storage that will not be deleted during hard reset.
I don't know how to do it for your particular device, but if you look in the WiKi, I think you will find the answer. You can then replace just the contents of the Extended ROM (no need to re-flash the whole device) or just install the camera cab from it. That should solve your problem.
P.S. All installations on the device are done by *.cab files. You can launch them by tapping on the file from file explorer on the device.

Hello,
you stoped the proces of customization. in this process device install all aplication from Extended ROM.
Your album and camera, and maybe other aplication are not runnig because they aren't installed.
Just do a HardReset and wait the customization finish.
Hi all.
Have been using an imate Jam 64MB version with rom 1.12.00 wwe for about a year now. My phone once I had it setup has been running like a dream. Now I feel I the need to start again. So I have a few questions and if you have any tips I'd most appreciate them.
Big Storage Questions.
I did the big rom storage hack, unfortunately the only sd card I had when I did it was a 1GB card so it took up the full space of the card, took ages to transfer that via usb !
Can you tell me if I hard reset will I have to do the big storage hack again?
Has anyone come up with an automated way of doing this? I have foung OLTP's guide.
Also on the ftp site there are roms v1.13 but these aren't on the club-imate site. So what gives?
Progs installed both on pc and jam.
As we've all experienced some progs insist on installing on pc first then ppc. If I wipe the jam when I reinstall these progs will I get any errors as they're already installed on the pc? I intend to reinstall XP on my pc later on (am starting out small first ppc now pc much later) so yet again will I have to reinstall these progs on my pc?
Registry.
Is there any way I can set up all my registry hacks in to one file so I just have to install that rather than do each individual one?
Do you have any other tips to make this go smoothly? Am I forgetting anything or am I getting antzy over nothing?
many thanks folks
harry
ps sorry if I'm asking stuff that's real basic, been so long since I did anything to the phone that I feel a born again noob.
Hi friends, I am looking for a solution to the problem of theft of PDA's. I have been told that in order to have a complete protection I may enter a theft protection application in the ROM itself so that even if any intelliegent thief is going to hardreset it I could still well would have the protection of that software. I have purchased a software for myself & looking to put in to self cooked ROM. May I know which is the best way of making a ROM for my Orange SPV 3100. Will it be a success or a failure to begin with. This is something I want to know from the seniors out here. I want a brainstorming session to be conducted here so that this scourge of theft could be controlled to an extent. I know there are lot of intelligent people out here in XDA Forum but I don't know why are'nt they taking any step in this novel concept. I know they cann't put any legal software coz that would make the ROM illegal but they can provide the option to the users so that they may buy & add that theft protection in to that ROM. I hope I have made myself clear with my plans..I hope a serious & honest consideration would be given to my initiative. This would be a paradigm change in the PDA usage...

If the thieve is not too dumb he will reflash the ROM anyway.
As far as I know there is no proof of concept of an ultimate anti thieve tool.
Dear be a part of answer not of the question. I want all of Your support in order to make this thing possible. I believe a cooked ROM can do that..
Hi friend I got this reply in one of my queries posted to somebody somewhere. Just wanna confirm whether this trick will work as to make a permanent theft protection in my ROM. I hope You got it..Plz comment seniors
Ultimate theft alert - The method to survive hard reset!
The software can be made to survive Hard-resets by adding certain files to your Ext.ROM. There are many tools to see/unlock your extended ROM - i am using Total Commander for PPC. Simply type "extended_rom" (without "") in the Dir bar and u will get full access.
After purchasing the software, you will have the following files in your Pocket PC' Windows folder
RecordDUI_UTA.txt
utaconfig
uta v3.exe
mesuta
Tapilib.dll
& UTA v3.lnk in Windows/Startup folder
1.Take a copy of these files in your PC.
2.Download WinCE cab manager. Trial version would be enough for the job. This software helps in creating cab files.
3.Add the above files to be placed in Windows folder
4.UTA v3.lnk should be specified to be placed in Windows/Startup folder
5.Finally you can build the cab.
This cab should be added to your Ext.ROM and a small edit to the config file of Ext.ROM(present in Ext.ROM folder) should be made to install the copied cab.

As fun_key already stated:
This is wasted time and energy! Nothing you would cook into your personal ROM would prevent a thief from simply reflashing the device! Also: while you're busy on the computer trying to cook an ANTI THEFT ROM somebody really might come and steal your pda ...
Best way of protection:watch your stuff!
In case you go ahead and cook a ROM for the next weeks you might give it a thought that even if there would be a possibility to prevent the thief from using your device right away - you will have lost it anyway! I doubt that the thief would come back, knock on your door and return the phone to you under appaologies ...
Hello everybody,
I'm new on this forum, so firstly I must appologise you for my english grammar and for my impatience.
I searched this forum and the net for answers for my questions but after a week I'm so confused to write a new Topic about it.
So I upgrade my MDAIII from WM2003SE to helmi's WM6.
I started from repartition Extended ROM. I unhided & unlocked, but when I try to repart ExtROM (on many possible ways) I allways have a bug...
So then I thought that isn't imidiately for me, and I just do the upgrade.
Now when everythings is okay I want to finish the software on my device.
I looked up for Extended ROM for WM6. I have the xplode's cubs.
I have found the issue about installing things from ExtROM from Storage Card. But this isn't for me enough resolution.
Meybe I'm crazy, and you say I haven't got any problems (like keep comming Christmas), but when my ExtROM is unused and I can't resize memory, I can use it.
To the now I didn't found the resolution for unhide, unlock & change my ExtROM on WM6.
But when you tell me this can be true and it will work, I can downgrade my device for WM2003, change the whole ExtROM cabs and other files in it, and then upgrade to WM6.
I found out that in these cabs isn't a autorun.exe, anybody knows how do with this?
PS. Can anybody tell me that Windows Update in WM6 work and update anythink? 'Cause I don't want to install things that they are unusable for me like VOIP aplication (I prefer Skype) and Audio Manager and WMDC.
Thanx for all of your answers. Regards
99% answers are under search button and sometimes even on Wiki.
Just 2 things to make you sure (but still nothing new): unlock and unhide and reformat is possible only in ppc2003. I don't think it is possible to use this space in WM6. You just loose 16MB of flash space. 99% of us had no problems with getting rid of ExtROM. Search buttons has some solutions if you can specify your problem. "I allways have a bug..." is not specifing a problem, at least not for me, as I'm not a fortuneteller. Even being a fortuneteller I cannot promise you that anything will work for sure, as you (your child, dog, girl, wife, UFO, whatever) can step on your BA (or disconnect, or take the battery out) and break it in the middle of the process. Just try to find out.
Windows UPDATE does not do anything for you. For sure not in BA. Want to know more, search. And if you don't like shopping, go fishing I see no point in asking us what to do not to do sth.
And Merry Christmas We will talk about new year later on.
PS: don't push all the buttons and run flashing-related programs without first reading what are those buttons/programs for. I mean it.
Hi there,
I'm having difficulty with a Symbol MC5040 running windows mobile 2003. It's hard-reset procedure will actually make everything worse, it's supposed to uninstall and reinstall some programs, setup some configuration, but some parts will fail and it will configure more than it should... I would like to learn how the hard-reset is done, so i can "master" the process, find out why it's doing this and fix it.
Can anyone point me to the right documentation? My google searches are flooded with the wrong results...
Thanks,
Simon
There is Clear storage item in settings.
And what does it do?
I'd like to modify the hard-reset process, how's that going to help?
I really appreciate your reply and I'll look for more information on it, but can you elaborate? Thanks!
Ok I read some, and it seems clearly unclear what it does exactly, compared to the hard-reset. I would think they are the same... but this still doesn't help me.
I know how to do the hard-reset, I'm doing it on a dozen different devices every day, but it helps a bit and also make things worse... something is wrong with it. It needs to be reconfigured.
I've read somewhere the hard-reset will reset everything to factory default and then add the OEM customization... I think this is where I need to look, but I couldn't find much valid info on that...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
You're not going to be able to modify the hard reset/cold boot. That's all configured in the rom. You'd need to re-cook and flash the rom to modify how things boot up. I have a 2003 device, but it didn't have a customization step after the welcome screens. All you could really do is skip customization (if it occurs) by soft resetting after going through all the welcome stuff.
