Ummm why would you want to attach it to your rear view mirror. Wouldn't that be completely dangerous?

In what way?
I'm using a HR banana suction arm combined with the passive Brodit holder, placed very near under the rear view mirror. That brings my Kaiser nearer to my eyes (see better) and closer under the roof (almost never in sunshine). So wanting to have it close to the rear view mirror seems to be quite "natural", it's a direction where we all (should) be very familiar to look in while driving, too...

Lets see exactly what you want !!
do you actualy want to fix it too the mirror? or next to it?
Unless your mirror has a Lock to it to stop it moving there is no way in hell it will take the weight of the phone and cradle. it will fall off and never stay in the correct position.
Also its not the safest place. you try to drive and look up at the mirror for more than 2 seconds.

Maybe you didn't understand. He want's to attach it to the rear view mirror. Taking up valuable space that is NEEDED. I would think that putting anything on it would greatly inhibit your viewing spectrum...thus making it dangerous. Under the rear view mirror is completely different. That would be the windshield, where a lot of people put GPS devices which is completely safe.

Oh you mean he would cover some area of the mirror itself? Didn't thought of it that way, well, of course, that's not a good thing...

Well, that really depends on his situation. In Australia, all vehicles have to be fitted with a rear view mirror. This includes vans and trucks that have the back window covered (eg: refridgerated trucks, furniture vans etc). Having the back window totally covered renders the rear view mirror absolutely useless..... yet it is a legal requirement to have one.
If the vehicle in question has no rear window or if it is covered up, I dont see how mounting the device on the mirror itself is dangerous.
I wouldnt do it though.... I'll stick with the windscreen mount!

Reversing the slide direction

I looked at the
www.htcamerica.net site, and appearently, the 8525 slide direction can be reversed. Click on the Sliding Querty link within the flash control to see what I mean.
Can anyone shed light on how to accomplish this?
XC
????
The Hermes shown there slides in the same direction as all others!?!
lol. you cant reverse it unless you're REALLY good with plastic injection molding
Umm... I don't see any abnormal sliding direction. You are probably looking at other models.
Hahaha! This reminds me of the refrigerator that opens on the left and right..

Expect that those "fridges" have the threaded holes on both sides of
the cabinet. I have seen a few Hermes units where if you have the KB
open you will have the ear piece on the right side as you type away.
I would HIGHLY doubt that any of these units have the ability to "swing
both ways". Just look at the shape of the two halves and you
will see why.

Xda Exec - Digital Frame

Hi!
I was wondering.. maybe this is a stupid idea, but, it's possible to use the xda exec as a digital frame, showing photos in slideshow mode? I know that are software that allows that, but my only doubt is if the screen holds lots of hours turned on (the exec plugged to the charger) without damage the display, over heating the display or something... it's possible?
Thanks in advance!
Use pictures and videos to open the folder where the images is located tap menu > play slideshow.. Plugged in or not it seems to do what you're asking for..
A Universal with all it's power and functionality used as a picture frame! Argh! That's like using a Rav4 for driving a child to school!!
But seriously, I don't think it will do damage. Of course the screen and backlight have a certain life which you will be using more than usual. But then that can be as bad as never switching on my projector to save the bulb life!
You gotta use it for what you find it useful for! And I think using it as a picture frame shows it off quite well

+1 for this!
It´s better that this member buys a digital frame and donate his/her Uni to us
especially since a universal from ebay is easily worth up to 120eur and a digital frame with let's say 7" is like 30eur storebought, bigger display and meant for that purpose

Nexus one camera issues

Hi,
a problem that many might have:
I need a camera free device to go to work with.
how hard is it to dismantle the camera? do I need a full open heart surgery?
or is it almost plug and play?
Eysham
You're better off taking off the battery cover and putting electrical tape over the camera, then putting the battery cover back on. That way you should be able to slide by. I read that the camera doesn't come off... you'd have to break it off, I guess.
i dont need the N1 bad enough to risk getting shamefully fired...
if security demands no camera i need to be with no camera. no playing around sliding with duck tape...
where did you read about the camera not beeing detachable? do you remember?

I believe it was in the Engadget hands on review... someone asked in the comments.
thanks, but couldn't find it...
Why not just get a cheapo phone with no camera for work, and when your off work just switch the sim card to the N1.
same reason I dont want to drive a cheapo beatup 1977 VW beetle to work and save my new R8 Audi (I wish...) to weekends...
and all just because there is a speed limit in the work place's internal parking lot...
eysham
It must be almost impossible to have a camera free phone these days. 5 years ago I worked for a company where cameras were banned (car industry, spy photos of future models are common but rather unhelpful to the companies) but it was when cameras were only just being added to phones.
If I was still there now I have no idea what phone I would have!
No phones that have cameras have "removable cameras". Some may have cameras you can remove, but you will have to at least partially dismantle your phone and actually cut out (or de-solder) a working component to do so. If you do that good luck getting any kind of replacement if it goes wrong.
The no cameras thing is tough with phones. I had a job a while back like that. It was tough to find a phone that didn't have a camera back then. We had to go with Blackberrys as they were about the only option. As for sneaking around with it. That wasn't an option the guys that were checking had guns and the ability to lock you away for a very long time for breaking the rules. I would have been lucky to only get fired.
there must be a way to detach it though...

The camera is not detachable because of the AF mechanism, it's surrounded by a metal casing that keeps the whole mechanism and sensor in place. Sure, you can remove it, but you won't be able to put it back.
You have 2 options
1. Leave the phone in the car ( should be safe in your compaies car park)
2. Get a small pin and drive it thourgh the lens, which will make the camera useless, and your employer can check if they wish.
Where do you work?
I'm thinking, a Cash center, at some air port, or some electronics company or a cleaner at MI5/6 / CIA
I think this link will confirm that there will be no way to remove it. The only option would be to destroy it.
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-One/1654/2
I will asume there is a cord which connected the camera to the mainboard.
in most of the case, the camera is just a modul. you can remove it if you dissemble the device.
Hide the phone up your arse.
How?
If you remove the camera and get your phoe "legalized" at work, how easy would it be for you to bring a new phone with camera two weeks later? Will they check it each time?
If they dont, some security...
great!! thanks for the info....
now have to decide...

Put an iPod Touch cover on it so they can't see it...

[Q] Motorcycle mount?

Just wondering if anyone's come up with a good way to mount the Defy on a motorcycle yet? Can't find a dedicated mount for the Defy yet so am looking for other options...Waiting for delivery of a plastic holster which, if I could remove the belt-clip, I could probably attatch to a universal stem mount. Not sure about how much clearance there would be between the holster and the phone for any securing nuts/fasteners so just interested if anyone has rigged up something similar? Can't wait to get my hands on this phone as the IP67 spec makes it perfect for use as a motorcycle sat-nav!
(Sorry- unable to include pictures/links to the proposed holster and stem mount as I'm a n00b!)
Hello mate,
I bought a couple of the cheap mounts from China, they use the standard 4 holes at the back, which makes it perfect for sticking cable ties though to hold it on the handle bars (see image).
I put it on the other day and took it for a test ride about 15 miles. It held in, but doesn't stop me feeling a bit scared that the vibrations will make it fall out.
I bought the origional motorola mount, put a decent bolt in the stem hole and used thw standard screw on mount. Done about 150km within like that, listening to music and google turn by turn through my bluetooth headphones.
2 issues though, wish it had a lanyard strap for a safety latch just in case it comes free the holder. 2nd issue is tha capacitive screen with racing leather gloves...
Cheers. That looks promising but I'm hoping to mount it to my R1 which has clipons. I think a stem mounts the only safe option (hate to pay the £70 odd Motohaus are asking for it tho!)...See what you mean about the posibility of it coming out of the upper clip (the holster I've ordered clips in on all four corners so may be safer.) Maybe you could rig up something that would lock the upper clip down- a loop of strong fishing line or something similar...bit of a bodge but wouldn't want to test the phones ruugedness by slinging it down the road at speed!!

Cheers. How did you secure the Motorola mount to the stem hole? Not sure how you'd be able to recess a captive nut or something similar within the stem itself? Ta.
I think the best idea maybe to try and fabricate your own, maybe get a small sheet of metal and fold the ends over so that the phone will slide in from the side only. Could then screw a ram mount bit on the back and attach to the bike that way. I'll probably try this when I can be bothered
The reason I got the defy though is because of it's ruggedness and because I go Dirt biking a lot and use the phone for Ordnance Survey mapping. I'm forever falling in rivers or big muddy bogs so I need to feel confident that it'll hold the phone in!
I used one of these
then got arount 5-8 rubber grommets like this
and pushed it through the stem hole. Its real tight!. Left a bit of of bolt out the top so the pivot locking system of the oem holder attaches to the bolt.
It looks pretty decent, nothing that ruins the looks of my 600rr.
I'll take some pics when Im in the garage next and post it up so you can see.
here it is, I'm going to wire it up to the battery when I find the right cables, needs to be removable since the bike does a lot of track days in race fairings.
Nice one- good job!
Might have to do something slightly different as I've got a steering damper mounted. Think I'll need to offset the carrier plate forward a bit...found site: telferizer.com that has stem mounts that suit various Ram mount parts so think I'll get something sorted. Thanks for the help!
Haha thats class, some proper american chopper business there- would have looked better if you had fab'd a custom tank and integrated the mount in the tank
I bought a Universal RamMount for ~50€ a few days ago, I'll post some photos as soon as I have it
Update...
...Managed to pick up one of these http://telferizer.com/ off ebay and these Ram Mount parts to secure the phone http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000WJ90K0/ref=oss_product http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002KO5XVU/ref=oss_product , http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001QD8Q5Q/ref=oss_product , http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000WJ90K0/ref=oss_product
Particularily like the phone holder as, having watched a UTube clip, I can be confident that the phone won't pop out over bumps in the road (got the suspension set up stiff for fast road/track use!) Hope this helps.
Can you not slip a couple of rubber bands over the ends of the bracket to keep the phone in place?
Simple solutions to complex problems
I'm sure there's loads of options for mounting the phone tho some better than others. My main concern is the phone coming out of whatever mounting plate it's held into- some of the car dock plates don't look too secure to me. Reckon rubber bands would help hold a clip shut but wouldn't do much for screen visibility! The RamMount plate http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045072079076045085078052085/Default.aspx........comes with various length holding arms and can be set up to hold the phone as tightly as you like.
Different strokes for diferent folks I guess!
I bought the RamMount Fingergrip, have a look.
on picture #4 you can see an additional screw at the bottom of the 'fingergrip', that's because the defy is not big enough. But it's sitting very tight even with only the 'fingers' left and right.
I have a question: with RamMount Fingergrip, can you charge the phone or the micro USB port is hidden behind the finger?
Thanks in advance.

That's the same mount that I bought. I used the short "fingers" on all four sides (1 one each long side instead of 2) - instead of the large "endplates" suggested for the top and bottom of the mount plate. This holds the phone very well and it is still possible to access all of the buttons and sockets on the side of the phone...perfect!!
Can someone please post some pictures of the Defy installed in the RamMount Fingergrip? Thanks

Argg how did I miss this
I have already made it last week. waiting for lenses. I have installed the app it works as it should, only don't forget to attach that magnet and metal ring cause it's like a switch for it. It works w/o it also
share your experience bro I am very excited.I orderd the lenses waiting for delivery.that magnet switch work in moto g?some sites say that switch did not work in moto g because our sensor is placed in different place.

I think your cardboard will be ready before mine, if I got the lenses after 27
then we have to place that switch at correct location. ok just leave it, it's not that important you can touch the screen select example and then place phone in cardboard.
btw from where you ordered the lenses ?, I have ordered from local lab instruments supplier

Sent from my XT1068
I just got a kit, but the magnet is in a bad place
My kit arrived in the post today - put it together with a bit of trial end error and a few youtube videos...
Only trouble is, the magnet does nothing... Took the phone out and tried tapping the magnet here and there on the phone and it looks like the magnetic sensor is just by the volume control... Not ideal given how the box is designed! A very difficult place to cut away at to make the original design work.
Others have suggested using something capacitative (like copper tape wherever you get hold of that!) and taping one end to the screen so you can double tap which is apparently the same thing...
Good luck!

Finally I got lenses. (actually lenses with focal dist 50mm(+20 power) work perfectly)
After changing the position of magnet
It works perfectly,
only two problems
1. due to 720p display resolution you will notice pixels on screen.
2. The sharky Gyro of our phone crates problem sometimes
Otherwise it's really great experience

you can place a little magnet at the bottom right side of phone, that's the location where the sensor is
Hey everyone! Do you think the G would work with any of the readymade cardboards you can find on Amazon, like "Andoer" or "I am cardboard?" Any luck with the magnetic sensor and the shaky gyro?

IMO the shaky gyro would be as it is until bosch or motorola releases a new sensor driver that fixes it. Is not that diffucult, just need to "smooth" the raw values. (some apps use this method internally)
The magnet halfway down the screen at the bottom of the volume control works for me. To find the exact spot, just move a fridge magnet over the screen until it blanks out. The hall effect sensor is in the phone so you can glue a magnet into your phone case to automatically close the screen and save your battery.
By taking a more powerful magnet and swinging it at the back of the phone, you can switch/'select' in Cardboard.
But I have modified a plastic version of cardboard from tinydeal which is about $13 (no magnets, but big 1.25" clear lenses) and taping a strong magnet on the inside top, and a ring magnet (both magnets come from old cheap $1 earphones, the strong one comes from large over the head, the ring magnets from others.) The weaker ring magnet is kept in place by being attracted to the strong magnet taped inside.
If you look at how the cardboard magnets work for the Google Nexus 5 that cardboard was designed for, you can figure out that you would have to put the strong magnet further from the phone.
One problem is that the bank of suction cups in the tinydeal gradually slip, so I also put a ledge for the Moto G2 to rest upon, and used 5 minute epoxy to attach it. I have attached a parts pic. The ledge is cut out from a $1 store dual dvd case.
Works a treat with the Paul McCartney concert in the stadium, use Bluetooth stereo headphones to look around the stadium and the sound moves as you turn your head.
