I have been reading this forum for the last few days. And checking out what your guys are doing here. (I like it!) Now I have some question for some of the experts that will help me make the choice of selecting my new phone.
I have T-mobile USA an currently have a razr. Now I have been thinking of getting a ppc after reading some reviews and things like that I see the kiaser might be the best ppc availale.(This is what I get from reviews don't shoot me) at this time. But I'm not looking to spend that kind of money on a phone. Even though it is sim unlocked not cid unlocked according to reading here what the difference is.
1. Should I go with a T-mobile Wing or go for the HTC Herald? And what is the difference really between the two phones. One is branded the other is not. Or should I try for the next power house in line that would be an HTC Hermes (TYTN).
2 Now if I do that and choose one of the two unbranded phones. It's a possible chance that I will get one that doesn't have english Os (maybe buyng from ebay). And I would like to use the best Rom for that phone from here of course. I'm just thinking i don't want to brick the phone right away. So are there easy methods to cid unlocks on any of these 3 phones? I just listed so I won't have problems trying to flash to a new Rom. With branded or unbranded phone and english or non english Os? Really need help with this.
1. The herald is inevitably more expensive than the wing. if you like tmobile, i'd go with the wing. This is because its unlocked, no? Either way, eh. Anything unlocked will be more expensive.
2. Again, I wouldn't choose the unbranded unless you dont intend to use it with tmobile. Either way, you can call them and ask them to unlock it for you after a set amount of time. This sim-unlocks the phone. Now, for cid-unlocking, we have three choices- aserg's method, USPL, and Hard-SPL.
Aserg's was popular back in the heyday of Herald flashing. Nobody really uses it anymore
USPL writes a temporary SPL to the phone that allows it to be flashed.
Hard-CID replaces the phones SPL with a permanent one that can't be overwritten (i think).
IN conclusion, if you really want an unlocked phone, get a wing, wait 60 days, ask them for the unlock code, and unlock away. To flash a new rom, use USPL or Hard-CID. In the end, you end up with an unlocked phone with CID bypass capabilities.
If you had searched, you would have known that.
Ok let me be more specific here. I do appreciate the reply!
Now here is what I'm asking is the the unbranded Herald better than the T-mobile wing beside looks? (the wing is ugly looking compared to the herald) I will be using the phone on T-mobile service. I understand the price difference in the phone being locked or unlocked. And if so of going unbranded should I choose between Herald or Hermes? The unbranded phones would be sim unlocked not cid unlocked. As I understand and maybe have a different language firmware or Os other than english which I can't understand not bi-lingual. And the wing would be locked both ways but be in english already. If I was to cid unlock what is the most safest way to do so?
If your staying on Tmobile, get a wing. Theres no damn good reason not too. The difference between the two????? Color and I believe keyboard layout -- hence the idea of "rebranding." Same thing.
Get a Wing. Its prettier and unlocking it is a breeze.
People just love the deep, dark, almost pearlescent blue of my phone , as do I!
So there is no difference in the Herald or Wing. So what you are saying is leave the unbranded phones alone. Is the Hermes still a good phone to use unbranded on T-mobile service or just plain ol get the wing and call it a day and stop boggling my brain? I do appreciate the help guys Thanks.
try to find it here:
www.pdadb.net
and choose what you nee.....
IMO, I think that a PDA without a physical keyboard is almost pointless.
I know the basics of the phones. I was just asking for some hands on experience opinions. Best ppc hands down bang for the buck.
go for htc p4350..
my choice any day
Is there any particular reason you are saying go with the P4350? According to others as stated earlier they said go for the wing.
I'm partial to the Wing, but the Herald is just as good. I've seen the Wing selling on ebay for between 250.00 - 300.00 unlocked.
It's not about being lock or unlocked because what I plan on doing soon as I get the phone. I will flash it with a Rom from this site. So I'm looking to make sure I'm getting the best for the time being. Until I get an itch again for the upgrade bug. So here are my choices T-mobile wing, HTC Herald or HTC Hermes. And according to those here is that I would guess that the Wing being the most easiest to flash I assume???? But I'm looking for the best phone that I will be happy with a cool Rom from here with all the tweaks added.
This is to itje. Do you feel there are any huge differences between the p4350 and the wing? If you had any experience with both phone. Or are you saying this because you have a p4350?
Herald V/S Wing
Ok, let's make it very clear Herald and wing are the same exact thing, except one is unlocked and HTC branded while the other is made specifically for America and t-mobile branded. Now lets countdown the major differences good and bad.
The Wing-it's cheaper since it's made for american customers. It comes with Wm6 built in. Less expensive if bought locket with t-mobile. But it shoud'nt be a problem for you since you already have t-mobile.
Herald-Not made for american customers, so you have to buy it unlocked hence more expensive. COme with wm5 you have to manually upgrade to wm6. You get to register with HTC and reciev all the updates.
Bad stuff about having branded T-Mobile: it comes with Myfaves, this app takes up a ton of storage and program meory, hate htis s**t.
So these were the differences in Herald and the wing.
but if you do chose to go unlocked then the question is Tytn V/S Herald V/S Tytn II right. As you know the tilt or tytn ii is the best and the most powerfull phone on the market, but as you mentioned before it's expensive, really really expensive. But depends on how much you want to spend ATT sells it locked for $550, plus unlocking charge. If you want to specifically buy tytn 2 then it's like 600 to 700 dollars.
Now Herald v/s Hermes. Herald is slimmer and lighter than Hermes. Arguably better looking too. But the Hermes has a 400mhz procceser while herald only has 200 mhz. Hermes also has a second camera for video call(the American version dosen't have it) the herald dosen't. And finally Hermes also has 3g, the herald dosen't. But you won't be able to use 3G since T_Mobile USA, dosen't support it. I hope this answers all your questions. Tell me if it dosent.

Well everyone, I did it! I managed to get the Cingular 8125 for $314.00 shipped next day from cingular. Got lucky with a nice sales rep.
Being that I am on the former AT&T wireless, I need to unlock this thing!
So, I am pretty much starving for knowledge here. I've combed the forum with little luck.
Anyone care to help out?
I am interested in Carrier Unlocking, and CID unlocking, flashing with button's cooked rom (which i was told to do but have no clue where to find this) , flash with radio rom 1.13. Any help would be awesome!
Thanks very much! Im very excited here!
Looking forward to responses.
Dan
I guess something i am not quite up to speed with is the phone also being the "wizard"
what else is this thing refered to?
I found the lokwiz post about unlocking. Is this what I will need for the 8125?
I just want to make sure Im doing this stuff right.
Tomorrow the phone is supposed to arrive, and I just wanna be ready to do what is neccessary to get it up and running
Thanks.
You got the phone for $314 with or without a contract? If you got it for $314 without a contract, please let me know how you did it and the name of the sales rep and everything. I really really want this phone badly and I don't want to get a new contract. And by the way, lokiwiz is the right program you need to unlock it. The 8125 is based on the original hardware called "Wizard." Lokwiz will work on any phone based on the "Wizard".
lokwiz is he right ting, unlocked my 8125 a couple of days ago.

I am buying an unlocked softbank X01HT on june 21st.
My question: Is there a hardware difference between these 2?
I am assuming it's just branding difference but essentialy the same unit?
BTW this forum rocks, it had a major influence in my decision to purchase a smartphone. I am hooked!
I would say VERIFY the device is truely unlocked before buying it, the softbank is notorious for being difficult to unlock. If I was to be recommending between the two...go for the TyTN since it is fully unlockable really easily.
The two devices are identical but softbank has loaded a different bootloader onto the ext_rom...if it is turned on and allowed to configure itself then you are stuck with an unlockable device (that we know of).
Softbank X01HT
Thanks for your prompt reply.
The guy I am buying from garantees it's unlocked to work on any GSM provider. I plan to use it on FIDO, I am in montreal, canada.
I want to put a WM6 rom on it as soon as I get it.
BTW yourwebsite rocks too, I like the tutorials for flashing ROMs, very cool.
I forgot:
For some reason, any HTC TYTN I have found so far are far more expensive than the softbank, that's why I was wondering if there was a hardware difference. Thanks for answering that question.
Now I am puzzled because if I am stuck with the softbank ROM, it's not exactly the best out there from what I hear.
Obviously you got a ISP unlocked phone.
Thats what the guy promised.
What you didnt get is the CID unlocked and X01HT is not easily unlocked if it is turned on and allowed to configure itself. May be the guy whom you bought did that.....and we will never know until you get the phone.

CID unlocked
Well, I haven't bought it yet, I was planning to pick it up in Toronto in june 21st but this CID business might change all that!
I'll find out before I get it. Thanks for the heads up SL.

Because the TyTN is fully unbranded by any carrier (Its a HTC branded one) and also comes as standard SIM unlocked, which the rest dont from the carriers.
ALL of them are CID locked its just the softbank is VERY difficult to CID unlock...infact the only way to CID unlock one at the moment is to NEVER turn the device on then read through the thread on it first. It is very unlikely that this guy has CID unlocked it.
But Its not a problem really since once HardSPL is on the device it reports it as SuperCID anyway
I have HTC Softbank X01HT. GSM unlocked, works fine.
I have some other issues on that (overwritten MAC address, 3G problems) which i'm working on to fix, but otherwise works fine with me.
X01HT
Thanks for your input pop20032004, I just emailed the store I plan to get it from to see if it's CID locked or not, awaiting their response.
They have even offered to ship it with WM6 pre-installed but I prefer to tweak it myself so I get the apps that I want and not the original WM garbage apps.
What ROM are you using?
Oops
Disregard my question about the ROM !
CID business...

Thanks for the advice, I will make sure to resist the temptation of powering it up when I get it. One last thing, which thread are you refering to?
Or what should I search for?

Hi olivierdamiron, No problem... I tried WM Black, wm6 premium, and other one (i dont remember now). I liked the stability of wm6.premium.v2 with X01HT. I also did Radio upgrade & bootloader upgrade to 2.10.Olipro (HardSPL v7). I'm really enjoying this device...
CID question
Well, just got a response from the rep, he quotes:
"Yes, it is CID unlocked. We have WM6 and can load it for you at no charge if you prefer. Just request it in the special instructions section during checkout."
So that's it then, thanks ALL for the advice.
I'm looking for the same phone you are buying. Could you post the link to the company you are getting yours from? Is there a warranty on the unit you are getting? Thanks in advance for your help
X01HT
I found it on Ebay, the guy says he has a store too. I am now waiting on warranty information and also further confirmation that it truly is CID unlocked
I will post the info as soon as I have it, still debating if I should go for it at this point with all the horror stories I hear about CID unlocking the X01HT.
The seller claims it's a Softbank X01HT with the TYTN ROM in it, this automaticaly makes it a bit fishy. It means it was modified at some point, certainly not by Softbank, they are notorious for their simlock feature if you go through the forums, and it also means it was repackaged. If they just unlock them and repackage them right away, I suppose it's fine.
Anyway, I will post more info as soon as I hear back from the seller.

Check out this guy here on eBay. He gives a two year warranty and used a supercid program that he says works the same as if the cid was unlocked. He doesn't care what rom you run, so that won't void the warranty. Price is the only issue. He's about $500US for an X01HT shipped within the US.
See if this works for ya ...
X01HT with TYTN ROM
Yes, a bit pricy but might be worth looking at.
I imagine these guys buy them bulk in ASIA, they are softbank then he flashes them and repackages them. At 400 bucks I would go for it but 500 US is a bit steep.
These type keep poping up on Ebay all the time, I am sure a better deal will come up soon, I check everyday.
Thanks for the link.
Cheers
On order, Softbank X01HT Black w/WM6
Well I have made the jump and sent my payment for a Softbank X01HT Black with WM6 preloaded.
I picked it up from here : http://www.networkingrus.com/SoftBank_Phones-SoftBank_X01HT_Pocket_PC_Phone_Unlocked.html
According to networkingrus, it is fully CID unlocked.
I will keep you guys posted as soon as my phone arrives to share this experience.
He also has other HTC phones like the new Touch and stuff, very cool online shop.
they are going like hot cakes!
In10se: In the end, your Ebay link was the best deal out there for sure. There are cheaper ones but the sellers don't look too reliable.
This guy has an excellent EBay rating and I see you ordered one there too!
Cool stuff. Share your experience here, I will be posting details here as well.
Cheers
Okay, so I had the Apache since it first came out, then it fell off my motorcycle last weekend, so I got a new phone (actually 2 new phones). I got the Herald (T-Mobile Wing), and the Titan (Verizon XV6800). I decided to test T-Mobiles phone with a 30 trial contract (I'm a loyal Verizon customer for 8 years), and get the Titan. Both of these phones are brand new (purchase last 2 days).
I'm pretty much going over all the same things I did when I had the Apache (ROM upgrades, skins, apps, etc...). I noticed the ROM on the Herald is different.
The Herald has ROM version 4.10.531.3 WWE.
The Titan has ROM version 2.09.605.8.
Herald has Radio version 02.83.90
Titan has Radion version 1.30.60
The Herald came with the Voice Command (which is nice), and the HTC Task Manager. The Titan seems to run a lot faster out of the box compared to the Herald, but this is probably due to the fact that T-Mobile installed so much crap on their phone.
Also, I noticed the keypad types much faster on the Herald as opposed to the Titan. I had to disable the sounds to get it to type as fast (fix?).
Anyways, I was wondering if there is any way to extract .cab files from one phone to another. Also if anyone has any questions about the phones, feel free to ask.
I understand the wing to have vastly inferior specifications to the mogul. I looked it up when my gf wanted a blackberry. I was trying to talk her into a wm device but I gave up when I found out that the only similar thing tmobile has to the mogul is the wing. The tmobile rep said that its successor is coming out later this year. I assume that it will be the kaiser or something similar. I think they are calling their new wm phones the shadows or something like that. (the tmobile rep was not to bright so I take what he says with a grain of salt. He said that it will be very much like the wing, with the sliding keyboard and all. I suggested it might be the kaiser, and he swore up and down it could not be,becuase they were calling it something like shadow II.)
In any event, the mogul has a much faster cpu than the wing. This comes with overheating however when you connect to the internet over cellular and use the wifi at the same time. I keep sending it back and complaining. Either they will fix it in a new revision,or they will have to upgrade me. I am not to happy as I paid a lot of money for something that does not work well, but there is no other phone that meets my needs for now.
Hello,
Probably will buy this device tomorrow, used, dont sure ifs its unbranded or Vodafone (Portugal) branded.
I have a question ...
- If it's unbranded (and so on unlocked), there's anything I need to know (something in the firmware), so I can install "anything" I want?
- If its branded and sim locked... it's easy to unbrand and unlock? Should I take a look of something on the firmware?
Really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Tiago
There is no good way yet to unlock the htc tattoo locked to orange uk except from using the ismart sim 2008. Besides the simlock problem, you have a smaller screen than other android devices. So some apps or games might not work properly.. but most of them do. Also you have limited access to the market, that is, you can access products that have been specified htc tattoo compliant only unless you root the device and install the cracked market app. Besides that everything is ok.

I never said it's tattoo orange uk... I said maybe its vodafone portugal tattoo...
smaller screen? what's the normal screen for tattoo ?
he ment its small screen, compared to other HTC phones, most phones got 3+ inches screen, tattoo is 2.8.
about unlocking - its ur rights to try put ur sim card in the phone before u buy it. Myn was unlocked, thought they sayd its locked to they network. At same time - they use same phones for selling as locked to they network with a contract, as same phones for selling it for full price...

I dont want to count with simcard... always had problems with it.
So its not easily possible to unlock and unbrand a tattoo ?
Dude, if I had the chance I would have bought a device which is easily upgradeable to another Android OS or other ROMS (maybe with different OS').
But returning to your issue:
Unbranding shouldn't be a problem (I removed Vodafone Germany branding), but with unlocking there are problems with certain providers. Just put your SIM in first and see if it boots, otherwise I would take another device if the tattoo should be locked.

But if I put my TMN sim card on Vodafone Tattoo, it's suppose to work ?
Not understood what you explained, sorry.
Some carriers sell phones that are locked to them, others sell unlocked phones.
Here in the UK for instance, vodafone phones are not locked and an HTC Tattoo bought from them can be used with any SIM. Ones sold by Orange are locked to them and can only be used with an Orange SIM.
I do not know if Vodafone in Portugal lock their phones or not, the simple way of checking is by trying your non vodafone SIM and seeing if it works.
Unlocking the Tattoo can be done but costs $15 or so I believe (although with the Desire they then charge you another $20 - a very dodgy practice), far better to buy one that's not locked in the first place unless you want to use it on the carrier it's locked to.
You posted a couple of days ago - have you already bought the phone? Was it unlocked? Or have you not bought it yet?

Now I understood.
Here in Portugal, ALL phones are SIM Locked. Unlock goes from 50$ to 150$.
That's why I asked if it's easy to do it by us.
HTCCode.com say on the front page that it costs $15 but people in the Desire forum are saying they are being told that their device costs more - but only after they've paid the $15.
I want a HD2 to use with at&t 3g the t9193 model but cant decide if I should buy the australian version or if I should spend a little more money and get the version that on the go solutions has. I cant post a url for being a new member. but its the version on the fist page of their website. I have read alot into getting this phone but dont think I am capable of flashing the phone and or getting rid of the telstra bloatware. I like the conveniency of everything being done but is it worth paying 900$ for. Thank you.
I wouldn't worry too much about the telstra bloatware... You can uncheck any of the sense tabs that are telstra related and you can run a fix that allows you to remove the top 3 (of 9) links on the home tab as these are normally locked to telstra related items...
I noticed that your radio and rom are both stock for your hd2a. Are u using at&t and if you are is it running good. Can u get rid of that blue telstra home screen and get the nice black one.

I have got US-Tmobile HD2 and it works great. No issues - but since you are planning keeping your AT&T service, I think that paying $900 for HD2 is way beyond any normal acceptance.
Don't get me wrong - I love my HD2 and plan to keep it at least 1.5-2 years... BUT:
6.5 will be dead pretty soon...
Many more phones are coming out for better price than $900 and having better hardware functions as well...
If I was stretched between AT&T and having 3G needs on it - I would consider good unlocked Android phone...
Just my $0.02
I want my Hd2 to run like the verizon Hd2 how difficult would this be to setup and do you think someone new to this would be able to complete the installation without messing something up? Any input helps thank you. looking into one on ebay but dont want to miss it before the sale is up. Thank You.
does no one want to help me out
I have been weighing the same options over the past few weeks. I have a FUZE. and I am sick of it...lagging, quirky and so on... I want a new phone (and really the HD2) so badly that I was even considering just buying the TMO HD2 for use on ATT to save money and just deal with no 3G speeds.
In the end I have decided to be patient. WP7 is coming out in October or so. If those phones (fast processor, big screens, other cool features) are desirable for my needs and get good reviews - then I might go that way.
At that same time - because of the new OS and Phones release coming in october ---the then technically obsolete WM 6.5 phones should go down in price...including the HD2. So that is my advise - wait and see how it plays out if you can wait until october.
Do not know how accurately this will all pan out - but I can just not bring myself to pay more ($750.00+) than I would for a full blown laptop for a phone (even though I use it more!)
BTW - I guess I never answered the question...and that is if you are not familiar or comfortable with flashing - then the extra money for the OTG solutions full version as an insurance policy against you bricking it is worth it..
Good Luck

I LOVE my Telstra HD2 - running on AT&T in the States

The main problem is whether you buy the t9193 or the tmous hd2, you'll never get 3g on AT&T's network. The U.S. GSM network is slightly different when it comes to 3G specs with the rest of the world and there T-Mobile's network is different from AT&T's 3G network.
