Hi,
i've googled around but haven't been able to solve this problem: every time i connect my magician to the usb port in my PC, it starts synching and charging at the same time. I know this is correct behaviour since USB ports are able to supply power to connected devices.
Anyway, i'd like to know if there's the possibility to avoid charging from the USB port (while retaining, of course, synching capability).
I need this hack 'cos i often connect my magician to the pc only for the time needed to sync my contacts/appointments (just a few seconds/minutes) or to install some small programs and i fear that recharging the battery for so a short time and 5-10 times a day may reduce its capacity or even destroy it.
I'd like to sync my magician without recharging its battery, do you thing it is possible? Is there a registry hack (either in ppc or in winxp) to disable USB power supplying? Do i need to manually hack my USB cable by cutting out the red and white power wires?
Thanks for your help,
bye bye,
Isidoro
You really have nothing to worry about. Lithium rechargeable batteries do not mind having small frequent top ups.
Ni-Cads on the other hand, yes they would be ruined.
Your phone uses a Lithium battery so as I said, no need to worry.
If you really wanted to, you could build a custom USB cable which does not carry the power, by omitting the GND and +5V pins (the first and the last pin of the usb connector).
This is not really needed, because modern batteries don't get damaged by multiple recharges...

I tried it but it didn't work: the phone doesn't charge, ok, but it doesn't' sync too!!! Winxp doesn't see it.
Maybe i should keep ground wire?!? Mah!

I know, i know, but i would definitely feel more safe if i could sync without charge.
Anyway, thank u all,
Isidoro
Use bluettoth to sync the device with pc, your problem will be solved.
All 4 wires are required for usb to work.
Removing any of them will prevent USB operating.
As stated, it doesnt matter about the top up charging, dont worry.
Disable charging
Disable USB charging
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\usbfndrv
and change the
EnableUsbCharging to '0'
then
soft reset
I'd like to try this on my Ameo. How do I use the REG files contained in the ZIP file? I am using the Ameo to connect my laptop to the Internet. It works great over a USB cable but I cannot get it to work with Bluetooth. I am concerned about constant short recharges. Is there a special folder to put the REG files into? How do I make the Ameo read the values before doing a soft reset?
Thanks
Bob
Hi
I'd like to try your solution with editing registry on my T Mobile Ameo. Could you tell me wwhat I need to do with the REG files. Is there a special folder to put them in? How do I invoke the setting before doing a soft reste ?
Thanks
Bob
@pedjajovicevic : my magician does not have this registry key
I searched for that key you wrote,
but this key doesn't exist on my (german) magician.
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\usbfndrv
Under BuiltIn there are many subkeys, but no usbfndrv, i searched the complete Builtin key but no key you wrote.
Can you tell me, where I maybe can create this key. Would it work ???
OK, i will try, but i don't know when. Two childs hold me away from my notebook
Are those registry files executed from the phone or the PC?
on your device.
but it won't work - there are no ways disable usb chargin in Magician via regsitry.
hello all,
Is it possible to have av-out on my wm5 device?
I have an mini usb with on the other end a red and a yellow plug.
i've already tried to connect but it just doesn't work.
is there any application i can use so i can connect to my tv via av???
My phone is a orange M600 aka prophet with latest dopod rom.
TIA
rebelish, that is just not going to work. I mean that is not a PC usb port. First its a mini-usb, second its not got all the WinXP functions which enable it to be so.
What might be a solution is to have a SD Socket AV-out (haven't seen any), or even try it through wifi... There is a program (forgot the name) which transfers the picture to the PC through wifi, but probably does not work for video.
Cheers.
A.) most PDA USB ports are slave, meaning normal addons will not work on them
B.) there are indeed SDIO cards that provide a VGA/AV output
The only pda I've seen with video out is the Dell x51v. I'm guessing it's a fair custom job, using more than just a mini-usb cable.
ok Thanks everybody for all the clear answers.
I do think it's a shame that we don't have that function already in our pocketpc's but than again we can't have it all.
I think i'am going for the bluetooth pal adaptor now because with that one can do the job wireless and i can show my 2Mega pixel pics on my tv screen.
everybody thanx again
cheers
Hi all,
yesterday my Universal fell from the table on the ground, and it fell directly onto the USB cable connector, which was plugged into the device at the moment. So now, the USB port on my Universal is acting pretty weird, it moves from side to side and it accepts the charger cable only under a very specific angle, so it is pretty difficult to plug the charger cable in correctly. I am going to get it repaired soon, but I want to backup my data first. The problem is, that the broken USB doesn't let me connect the device to my PC, as even if the status LED lights up as if it was connected and charging, I get the "device not recognised" error on my computer. Does anyone have an idea that could help me please? Thanks a lot in advance,
Longlife

I would say download the trial version of Spb backup, and copy the CAB installer to your SD-card via an card reader on the PC. This way you don't need the USB connection. You can make a self-extractable full backup, just make sure that you have the same ROM installed before restoring. I hope this helps .
oh then get it fixed lol
i paid £10 for mine to be fixed (came straight off main board) from a local phone repairers

Yeah, I'm going to get it fixed for sure but I don't want to risk losing my data if the mechanic did a hard reset or something.
Same problem, without the fall
My USB connector started acting up a couple of days ago. It's strange, because I dropped it once, but worked fine afterwards. Now, I need to jiggle the cable aruond for a bit before it actually makes contact
What do you think, how long does it take for them to fix it in a repair shop. Could I possibly wait for it to be finished?
I would suggest getting a Universal Battery Mobile Charger to charge the battery and a USB bluetooth adapter for the computer to sync.
Then if you decide to get it fixed just make sure it's from a reputable repair center. After the repair, I still suggest using the mobile Charger and USB dongle to charge and sync to lessen the stress on miniusb. Goodluck!
Reputable it will be! The T-Mobile shop I purchased it at!
And how long do you think it will take for them to fix it(the repair shop is right in the back of the store...)?
Four days ago, I took the phone to a one of a very few QTEK services in the Czech Republic and they promised to make me an price offer of the repair. They sent me an e-mail yesterday, and the price was..14,026 CZK, which is about 500 EUR accoridng to today's rates. They said that the whole motherboard needed to be replaced, because one part of it had been nicked. Anyway, I bought the phone on ebay for about 400 EUR and I am not really going to pay such a huge amount of money for the repair (I can get a brand new Universal for this price..or even cheaper). Do you think it's possible that the service was either mistaken or lied to me to make a higher profit? And, if a part of the motherboard really is snapped off, do you think it would be possible to fix it somehow? Thanks a lot,
Longlife

Thanks, if I don't manage to get it fixed (see my last post) I'll probably do that. btw, I didn't see a BT connection option in my ActiveSync (and I think I have the latest version), do I need a special plugin or a different piece of software for the sync? Thanks,

sorry, for writing in slovak, its easier and faster and longlife understands.
nazdar oprava tu v UK stoji asi 20gbp, odporucam ti v cexax najst nejaky mobil servis, tu na ftp najdes man na rozobratie uniho, a skus si cez net kupit usbfemale(vsetky su standartne). xod do sevisu a skus ix ukecatnex ti to opravia.btw mas ho v zaruke este?
If you want to use BT to sync, you'll need to map virtual serial ports to your adapter(this can be usually done from within the adapter's program, like BlueSoleil), and the configure ActiveSync to accept connections from that port. Afterwards, you need to start ActiveSync on your MDA, and select "Connect via Bluetooth", and voilá.
The catch is, you can't sync music this way. But that might be the smallest of your worries

Hi,
Can you please explain how to do it in BlueSoleil?
I have BlueSoleil (legal), and I've been reading, and trying everything, for hours, without success.
I've managed to get a bt connection between my laptop and my Universal, and one of the available service is indeed ActiveSync. And I can see AS trying to connect, when I click on "Connect via Bluetooth" in my PPC. But then it just stops, and my Uni says it didn't find a partnership with ActiveSync.
Any help, please?
TIA

Initially you have to open a COM port for the Bluetooth Serial Settings..and then when you open the COM port (like COM 5 or something), go to active sync Connections Settings and then check "Allow connections to following" and then choose the COM port of the Bluetooth Serial Settings (like COM 5 depending on what COM port you put the BT serial settings).
This might buy you some time till prices go down and you could have it repair for lower price.
GOODLUCK!

Thanks Just one more thing..I will probably not be able to flash new ROM via BT, or will I?
Sorry no flashing via bluetooth only via USB. Not sure though if you can do it via SD if somebody builds an image of the ROM you want in SD then use that but not familiar with it on Universal.
Hello
I hqd the same problem happening to me : the connection between the mini USB and the motherboard were severed. I used stripping wire to redo the connections, and hot glue to make sure they don't break again.
You can certainly do the same. Please tell me if you need a spare mini USB connector to replace your broken one (got one ! you can also find one in any cheap USB reader)

Hi,
many thanks for your idea! I recently gave the phone to my grandmother's former student, who is an amateur electrotechnic. Hopefully, he will manage to mend it and if not, I will surely try what you have suggested. Just one thing..don't you need a special screwdriver to get into the phone?
Thanks, Longlife

Hello folks,
I have a big problem. I was flashing my own Qtek 2020 quite a several times - and no problems at all.
So my friend took his Qtek 2020 to me for flashing. In a process, just right after erasing an old rom, and before flashing a new one, it said there's "some" problem. After a reset (no matter soft or hard one) it stays all the time in a bootloader. Cradling it doesn't change from Serial to USB - HimaUpgrade can't connect to a device....
Help! What can I do to reflash it? Bootloader is 1.03.
Nobody knows what I have to do?... maybe some method of flashing it through an SD card? I've read about it, but it's rather cryptic
Please, people... ?
my old cradle had serious bad connection and at times it would not turn usb
i solved it by changing to my old xda1 cradle
another option i guess is to get a real usb ->xdaII cable kinda like the charging cable
or to mess around with the xdaII cradle untill it connect correct
umm, no, this is not the case. I have a second xdaII, and the same cradle. The cradle is ok, it's a device which is broken... the other is ok (well, kinda - one is not-operative, the second one has a broken connector).
And I have an USB cable, too

My car's white - how fast does it go?
And now for some more detail:-
Is the error coming up from Windows, or ActiveSync?
What OS and ActiveSync version are you using?
Have you ever been able to sync?
What ROM is your device using?
Are you using USB or Bluetooth Sync?
If its ActiveSync, you could try deleting any existing profiles within the Application and trying again.
Have you tried both a soft and hard reset of the phone?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling ActiveSync?
Have you got the latest version of ActiveSync?
Have you tried synchronising over bluetooth instead of USB (or vice-versa)?
Have you tried google to resolve your problem?

it is ok before 15th,Feb.the software and device is ok.
but some time ,the USB port is not stable , you need to put a book above the USB cable.
one day , the device can not link to PC whatever i shake the cable.i change
a new USB part of the device , but it can not working yet.
the repairer said, the control IC has broken , is it right ?

Tis an old quote passed down to me as a junior IT tech from the wizards of the mainframe, and illustrates the point perfectly I think.
Veron_fat - when you say you have "change a new USB part of the device", is that the USB cable, or the Mini-USB port on the device?? I had a fault with my first charger where the connection eventually went wrong within the connector on the cable - swapped it out with a new charger and all was well again. I have however also broken an Axim x50v sync port with too much flexing - the connector broke the solder ports on the mobo.
I'd be surprised if you'd broken the IC - can someone else advise if my memory is correct and the USB device controller is integrated into the main CPU. Is this also shared with the USB host controller? I'm thinking that if Veron_fat has the 4 in 1 USB cable, he can test that to see if it is the IC, or the port that is at fault.
I do think though Veron that you've buggered the port, and it will either be a resolder on the port by a skilled electronics engineer, or a new mobo.

Why not just send it back to HTC for repairs/diagnostics? It might only cost you shipping. Just my 2 cents.
