Which is the best option for a web browser on the XDA Exec. THe supplied IE is quite slow and the pixel doubling insane. I have tried Netfront 3.3 but that seems far slower than IE.
Which is the best browser solution for speed and visibility? Please ;o)
opera 8.5
i have just used the opera 8.5. the speed is slightly slower than IE but it is 100% full born browser. with good view in and out capability.
Opera all the way
I have just started using Opera 8.5 for WM5 and have already forgotten about about clumsy PIE. Works even better if you overclock your jasjar to 624Mhz
I have installed Opera and it is great. EXCEPT all the options are I assume in Japanese as I just get squares instead of text. Is there any way to set it to English?
Thanks!
Opera
I installed with help from this forum, and I agree it is the best. All my options are showing up in English with no problem. It does a MUCH better job than PIE. Very close to desktop browsing experience.
Strange. Which instructions did you use to install Opera?
Cheers...
Only "issue" I have with Opera at the moment, is the double-space bug when you are typing into a text box. Find a fix for that, and it's a great bit of kit.
Cheers,
Steve.
I really like netfront (the latest preview)
I also have the square characteres (Japanese!?).
Tried also to install after regional settings set to 'English UK', but no way.
Anyone who had the same problem, figured out, how to solve it?
No instructions for this issue, found in the forum.
ought & Conchas,
The instructions I used are on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=195706
Cheers!
Ought,
see the thread Shivafool mentioned (end of page 3).
It seems the file for english language is not distributed within the CAB file.
you have to add it by your own and edit the .ini file.
Know it works for me.
Great
Netfront Latest Preview
Does the latest Netfront suport VGA screens - assuming it now runs on WM5?
Could someone post the en.lng file on the ftp, Im missing it also and dont have time to learn japanese this side of 2007 !
Many Thanks
Ricardo,
you can download it from http://www.ratcom.plus.com/files/english.rar
Many thanks, all working fine now.
illwil,
See this post

It seems it does support VGA but doesn't claim to be fully WM5 compliant yet. The technical preview is supposed to work until 1/31.
This is not the Sharp version that has to be patched with a modified .dll to work, this is the real thing. Unfortunately, only a beta so far, and only a 45 Day Testversion at that, but very nice to look at nontheless, and it natively starts in VGA Mode.
http://www.opera.com/download/mobil... Pocket PC phones running Windows Mobile 5.0.
Thanks Rapax,
Just downloaded it and will soon install.
Thanks once again for sharing this vital information
Kind Regards
After a brief trial:
Page rendering is probably the best (better than PIE and Netfront 3.3)
Does not handle mail attachments in web based e-mail accounts such as Gmail. Both PIE and Netfront 3.3 do support file attachments.
Does not support flash sites though I have Macromedia flash player 6.0 on my Jasjar and PIE uses it. Netfront will take advantage of flash sites once the commercial version is available.
In terms of speed Opera appears to be the fastest compared to PIE and Netfront 3.3
Don't know if there is a way to define a user-agent because in its current form it forces us to mobile versions of web sites. I could not visit my hotmail site and it forces me to the mobile msn site. Likewise for www.handango.com
So all in all I have mixed feelings regarding this browser. Good in some areas but not the best. For my needs Netfront is still the overall winner. (However these are just my views)
Again may be it is only me but after I have used and closed opera (really closed) it prevents Planmaker to start up. I have to reset the Jasjar to be able to use planmaker again.
Regards
Sweet Lord, it's gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
THIS is the browser that should be included with WM5.0.
EDIT: TAB doesn't work to move between fields...minor point.
Sharp version - new version
What's the difference compared to the Sharp-hacked one?
Do you see any improvement?
I have that, and it's working well.
The major problem I have is in using java applets. Unfortunately it seems a problem only Nefront 3.3 will be able to solve.
Opera looks good on initial usage.
Seems very kind to the RAM, did not see any leakage unlike with PIE
I ve tried it but it doesnt start. I ve installed in sd and ram but doesnt start. Any idea?
No errors. the clock spin 4 times and nothing hapens.....
Is there a way to import my PIE bookmarks?
Has this version fixed the double-space bug when entering stuff into text fields?
I am using it too. I think this browser looks especially nice on these model of phones because of the landscape screen orientation, and VGA.
it seems to work very quickly, as well and I did not have a problem with java applets. in fact I went to my bank site and alot of other sites that used java with no problem. Not sure how they manage to fit everything and resize everything to that small screen but for right now it will be my browser of choice.
It handles new windows very well and like other said doesn't take alot of ram. i do find it runs better when installed on storage memory as oppose to memory card storage.
i am going to continue to test it though. I have not played with netfront 3.3 as much.. but i like opera alot better.so far.
those that have not tried it I highly recommend it.
I didn't like Opera 8.5. Personally, I prefer PIE with Multi IE... can't find any better!
Hi all..
I've been checking lately the awesome products from Picsel Technologies. I'm sure many of you have tried Picsel Browser which can be found here on the board, but I was really impressed mostly from the other products - Picsel ProViewer, and most of all Picsel PDF Viewer.
This latest PDF viewer is simply an astonishing program. It's so cool to navigate between pages, very easy one handed view of large A4 pages, and it loads big sized PDF files very fast.
Of course the products aren't perfect, but the main problem i'm facing on my HTC Trinity is the very slow loading times of all the programs. It takes simply too much time to load these programs.
I read on the net that there is a little program for the Palm devices called Picsel Accelerator which should fix this major drawback. it can be found here:
http://palmpowerups.com/modules.php?...download&cid=2
The question is: Is there any program similar to that one for the WM5 platform?? It would increase the usability of these excellent products a lot.
Or maybe a member here has some tips for improving loading times??
Sampsons WM5 rom for Titan runs better than WM6 (read on)
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10780
Checkout the WM5 fallback ROM for the Mogul. It replaces the messed up Oct 27th rubbish, fixes the Memory leak (or WM6 crappy mem manager) and leaves you with 20-28 megs free on bootup (based on what you install), does not end up having memory issues with Picsel browser (PPCGeeks version), Removes all the junk that Sprint installs, 189 Megs free after ROM install. Pocket Explorer works (a little wonky as the Active X controls seem to be dated comapared to WM6). Here is the file on Megaupload....
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E6VQ9GKP
I used the ROM Unlocker from XDA forum for the Mogul before installing this ROM. I have better battery life, more memory, less hangups.
Try at your own risk. Also works well with Touch Commander ($15 retail) http://www.touch-commander.com/
Use Touch Commander with Sampsons WM5 Rom on Mogul
If you are torn between the Mogul and the HTC Touch try this fix.....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download the Sampson Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341977)
and Touch Commander ($15 retail at http://www.touch-commander.com/)
I am getting 22 Megs free and with Touch Commander running 16-17 Megs free. No out of memory issues and the memory stays stable all day. Unless HTC worked a miracle with WM6 or downgraded the Touch to WM5 you will have memory issues with the HTC Touch.
Also able to run memory intensive apps like Picsel (PPCGeeks version ftp://ppcgeeks:[email protected] )

ummm... or use DCD's clean WM6 which gives you only 27Mb (GASP! a meg difference!), but keeps all the goodness of WM6.
Its faster than the stock Alltel or Sprint WM6 ROM, and unlike Samson's rom, it includes Office, the WM6 visual changes, a working IE (with the proper user agent ID) and the much needed A2DP support that WM5 had trouble with (surprised more people haven't mentioned that setback going back to WM5... this is why I was waiting for WM6 in the first place!).
In all honesty, WM5 may run smoother on the titan, but you DO give up some things that WM6 offers that may be important to some people. The touch has those things, WM5 does not.
Also, why spend money on a touchflo clone when there are free ones that are being developed? Some of them work VERY well, and are always adding new features... and work with WM5 OR WM6.
And one final thought-
even if your PPC runs smoothly and has a touch interface clone, it won't be as smooth as the actual touch.
Why?
Because the TouchFlo relies on the physical shape of the screen to work: The sensitivity of the touch pad actually reaches below the viewable area. You start your finger below the screen, and move it toward the top. This brings up your shortcuts.
All of the other Pocket PC's out there are touch sensitive only over the viewable screen. This means that it is very easy to set off the down-up motion by accident. I've used a few of them with FTouchFlo, and when I'm scrolling through a list with my finger, it usually accidentally triggers the shortcut menu. The cube programs are a novelty, perhaps useful with the right hardware (The Touch), but otherwise this is hardly a "as good as" solution.
If you can create a rom that doesn't accidentally trigger the touch commands and runs WM6, then we'd have something to talk about...

Is there a link anywhere for the DCD clean WM6 ROM?
Doug
check the flashing tutorial over at ppcgeeks.
Some really great guy wrote it, and has all you need to know.
Is it possible to make the scrolling more smooth? (Maybe like the iphone?)
an app or ROM that can do it maybe?
can you give us more information? which handset are you using? with which ROM?
I dont have a wm phone yet
I just watched the Iphone vs WM 6.5 from pocketnow and he said that scrolling on the iphone is just SO Smooth, and on the wm 6.5 its a little "Natchy".
So i just wandered if we could Customize the scrolling ability in wm6.5 to make it more Smooth?

There are a few programs that allow for kinetic scrolling which is found on the iPhone. Many custom and official roms have this built in of course. The video you may have been watching probably showed a rom without a scrolling driver/program. FTouchSL is a program that allows this.
Scrolling smoothness depends on processing speed of the device itself. I have a HTC Touch and scrolling in menu and lists is jerky at default CPU speed(200Mhz). When i overclock it, the scrolling appears much more fluid (btw, my ELFin goes up to 300Mhz!! Even 308 works but i use it at 300 )
Actually the differences between the iPhone and WM6.5 aren't that different.
Scrolling on the WM6.5 has kinetic scrolling built in. The difference is that Windows Mobile will change the scrolling depending on what app you are using. Most scrolling is EXACTLY like the iPhone.
The "notching" effect is only found in the later builds of the Start Menu where when you FLICK... it only scrolls one page at a time... verses scrolling all the way to the bottom... similar to the iPhones homescreen where you flick to go to the next page of app icons.
With WM6.5 you don't need any type of additional scrolling as it is already smooth and fluid. Stock WM6.5 drivers are even better then that of FTouchSL and HTC Gestures.
Few days ago a guy at work asked me whether you can even use the touch screen on Windows Mobile because he thought that's only possible with iphone. That's so RIDICULOUS (my favourite word as of recently). But I guess we can blame it on MS for launching 6.5 way too late....

I'd blame it on apple for their brainwashing of the most of the population, including looking at that latest lawsuit themselves, into believing that they are teh only ones to do anything at all ever..
Regardless of any kinetic scrolling present in Windows Mobile 6.5 or later, there really is nothing out there that will let the default WinMo apps scroll as consistently smooth as an iPhone, not even on my HD2.
There are some third party apps with excellent smooth scrolling built in (Like Resco Explorer 2010), but if you want the start menu, WinMo contacts, messaging, File Explorer etc. to have perfect smooth scrolling - it's not going to happen.
It's not terrible by any means, but you'll get the occasionally hiccup or lost frame or pause. And it doesn't seem like its running at full frame rate either - but most of the time it runs pretty well. Certainly not anything to lose sleep over
Well you can always get some Cooked ROM like Dutty`s ... I could say that it is better than my original ROM was. And I mean in all terms.
Coincidently, i have a related doubt. Is it possible to make scrolling in WM 6.5.X more fluid and bouncy like in WM 6.5 by replacing some registry setting or file?
I would like to know this too,I dont think its possible.

Im using the ROM from my Signature so its a 6.5 Build and like some peoples here say the drivers are already includet in the 6.5 Builds but i search in the rom and i found that file PhysicsEngine.ddl in my windows directory the file was only 20kb
So i download the cab scrolling bouncing 6.5.x.cab and i saw in the cab that here just have the same PhysicsEngine.ddl but its a bit diferent and is 23 KB not 20 like in my ROM.
I install the CAB and i don`t know do is placibo effect but now the scrolling is even better, so my question is from withch ROM you extract this ddl file and maybe have diference in the this files so when this is a bigger size its mean that is a bit diferent.. because if was the same size 20kb this mean is the same.
Also if this is right we can extract this ddl from the very very latest 6.5 Buld witch is posible to be more up to date and the ddl file to be even better.
It seems to me my scroll is also become better. Before it was often, that then I started to scroll, the phone recognized it as a touch and lunched what was under the finger. Now then I scroll – it scroll, then I touch – it touch.
wow
this makes scrolling much better.
Good POST

This does noticeably affect how this scrolls. Thanks so much for the cab. I am running an NRG ROM, and it has most definitely improved my scrolling abilities. GOOD WORK!!!
It's certainly better. Anyways, I once used a ROM which had a really, really smooth Windows menu. Just as smooth as iphone. But I forgot which ROM it was. I have no clue why it was so smooth : (
