Which is the best web browser to use? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Which is the best option for a web browser on the XDA Exec. THe supplied IE is quite slow and the pixel doubling insane. I have tried Netfront 3.3 but that seems far slower than IE.
Which is the best browser solution for speed and visibility? Please ;o)

opera 8.5
i have just used the opera 8.5. the speed is slightly slower than IE but it is 100% full born browser. with good view in and out capability.

Opera all the way
I have just started using Opera 8.5 for WM5 and have already forgotten about about clumsy PIE. Works even better if you overclock your jasjar to 624Mhz

I have installed Opera and it is great. EXCEPT all the options are I assume in Japanese as I just get squares instead of text. Is there any way to set it to English?
Thanks!

Opera
I installed with help from this forum, and I agree it is the best. All my options are showing up in English with no problem. It does a MUCH better job than PIE. Very close to desktop browsing experience.

Strange. Which instructions did you use to install Opera?
Cheers...

Only "issue" I have with Opera at the moment, is the double-space bug when you are typing into a text box. Find a fix for that, and it's a great bit of kit.
Cheers,
Steve.

I really like netfront (the latest preview)

I also have the square characteres (Japanese!?).
Tried also to install after regional settings set to 'English UK', but no way.
Anyone who had the same problem, figured out, how to solve it?
No instructions for this issue, found in the forum.

ought & Conchas,
The instructions I used are on this thread:

Cheers!

Ought,
see the thread Shivafool mentioned (end of page 3).
It seems the file for english language is not distributed within the CAB file.
you have to add it by your own and edit the .ini file.
Know it works for me.
Great

Netfront Latest Preview
Does the latest Netfront suport VGA screens - assuming it now runs on WM5?

Could someone post the en.lng file on the ftp, Im missing it also and dont have time to learn japanese this side of 2007 !
Many Thanks

Ricardo,
you can download it from http://www.ratcom.plus.com/files/english.rar

Many thanks, all working fine now.

illwil,

It seems it does support VGA but doesn't claim to be fully WM5 compliant yet. The technical preview is supposed to work until 1/31.

VGA WEB Browser which one

Having a VGA PDA is nice, but Microsoft made useless Pocket IE, which Browser will help me to REALLY surf in VGA mode, I do not want to put the VGA Hack for everything
I am afraid there are very few options at the moment. Give Bitstream's Thunderhawk a try though it is a bit expensive as you have to select a package of regular payment. However use there free trial period and if you like it you may continue.
I am also anxiously waiting for the WM5 compatible version of Access Netfront and Opera.
I was using Netfront 3.2 on my previous i-mate pda2k but this does not work on the JJ.

What VGA hack? Do you know of one that works for WM5 or Pocket IE? I've been looking for one.
Thanks,
Brett
I've always liked opera and used to use it loads on my SE P800/P900. Does anyone know if they plan to release a WM5 version? Should we ask them?
minimo support VGA not sure if it works on 2005 though
It doesn't (at least it didn't for me)
This is reall stupid, MS made the OS quite well except for Web browsing...

I never cease to be amazed when I ponder the absolute stupidity of Pocket IE. To some extent I can understand why some people would want to use the pixel doubling feature on a VGA device, but why on earth wouldn't they give us the option to disable it?
Brett
It really is pathetic isn't it. They give us the options of having the text as small as we like but then it goes and makes all the pictures massive and blocky.
I guess MS just don't want people to use the browser.

And worst off all VGA work flawlessley on Terminal Service... :x
Well, there you go then. I'll remote desktop through to my server, which will RD through to a desktop machine (with slightly more lapse security settings than my server; eg running scripts, etc) and I'll use that IE in that instead
MiniMo - Mini Mozilla -

support vga screen (640x480) check http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/FAQ.html for more infos.
some screenshots http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/screenshots.html
forget the dl link http://www.meer.net/~dougt/minimo_ce/
use the 009 version
Tried the install of minimo on my Jasjar. Ran thru the normal start of installation, then i got a msg on the pda screen that the install was unsuccessful!
I tried to use Minimo very eary time i got Jasjar, yse works.
But not only too slow but also the size was too big for me.
Not good solution for me.
That why i am using Opera for MS Smart Phone and Opera Mini for GSM Phone on MIDLet.
Opera Mini is the best for me at this moment.....
How do you use Opera Mini without being in Norway?
There website says Norway only.

Unfortunately Bitstream Thunderhawk that is the best browser at the moment does'nt work with jj. Anyone managed to work with it and jj?
@ 155,
You can run it. The default language is Scandanavian (Please don't shoot me if I have that wrong). But you can go into the settings and change it to english. I didn't find the program too useful, but it does work.
Sorry late replay, already not up to date i think....

change english menu like this...
Start Opera -> Meny -> Verkt?y -> Instillinger -> Spr?k
you can find Language manu!
Also you can see the Captured here(pls igonore japanese)

@lucazaffiro.
Bitstream Thunderhawk does work on the JJ. It is working for me.
The trick is that before you tap the Thunderhawk Icon (eye) rotate the screen to portrait. If you start Thunderhawk without rotating the screen to portrait then it gets stuck.
Please do let me know if this helped.
Kind regards

OPERA v8.5 works great on my QTEK 9000!!!

Wow!
It has more features than the OPERA MINI and works just great. Tested only for a short while using GPRS as its expensive.
hi
can you put the cab here for download and does it render the flash and java websites???
thanks (by flash enabled i mean if you go to www.bmw.com or www.nissanusa.com then you should be able to see the flash animations on their website)
thanks
Someone already posted it. Please follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=35595&highlight=opera+8+5
I tried it, and it worked well.
I tried the BMW site. No animation could be seen.
Tested on my Dopod 900
It works SUPER FAST 8)
much better than IE and NetFront, but I think its reletively slow when browsing a Non english webpage
It doesn't support porxies
The PIE works great with proxy, but Opera doesn't !!!
you gotta thank des for it
No it does not support flash enabled sites.
The version 3.2 of Netfront though did but it is no longer compatible with WM5. NetFront's latest technical preview version 3.3 release 103 also does not support flash enabled sites but I think this is just a limitation of the technical preview version. Once the commercial version is released let us see if it does or does not support flash enabled sites. I am hopeful though that it will.

Opera 8.5 for WM5

This is not the Sharp version that has to be patched with a modified .dll to work, this is the real thing. Unfortunately, only a beta so far, and only a 45 Day Testversion at that, but very nice to look at nontheless, and it natively starts in VGA Mode.
http://www.opera.com/download/mobil... Pocket PC phones running Windows Mobile 5.0.
Thanks Rapax,
Just downloaded it and will soon install.
Thanks once again for sharing this vital information
Kind Regards
After a brief trial:
Page rendering is probably the best (better than PIE and Netfront 3.3)
Does not handle mail attachments in web based e-mail accounts such as Gmail. Both PIE and Netfront 3.3 do support file attachments.
Does not support flash sites though I have Macromedia flash player 6.0 on my Jasjar and PIE uses it. Netfront will take advantage of flash sites once the commercial version is available.
In terms of speed Opera appears to be the fastest compared to PIE and Netfront 3.3
Don't know if there is a way to define a user-agent because in its current form it forces us to mobile versions of web sites. I could not visit my hotmail site and it forces me to the mobile msn site. Likewise for www.handango.com
So all in all I have mixed feelings regarding this browser. Good in some areas but not the best. For my needs Netfront is still the overall winner. (However these are just my views)
Again may be it is only me but after I have used and closed opera (really closed) it prevents Planmaker to start up. I have to reset the Jasjar to be able to use planmaker again.
Regards
Sweet Lord, it's gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
THIS is the browser that should be included with WM5.0.
EDIT: TAB doesn't work to move between fields...minor point.
Sharp version - new version
What's the difference compared to the Sharp-hacked one?
Do you see any improvement?
I have that, and it's working well.
The major problem I have is in using java applets. Unfortunately it seems a problem only Nefront 3.3 will be able to solve.
Opera looks good on initial usage.
Seems very kind to the RAM, did not see any leakage unlike with PIE
I ve tried it but it doesnt start. I ve installed in sd and ram but doesnt start. Any idea?
No errors. the clock spin 4 times and nothing hapens.....
Is there a way to import my PIE bookmarks?
Has this version fixed the double-space bug when entering stuff into text fields?
I am using it too. I think this browser looks especially nice on these model of phones because of the landscape screen orientation, and VGA.
it seems to work very quickly, as well and I did not have a problem with java applets. in fact I went to my bank site and alot of other sites that used java with no problem. Not sure how they manage to fit everything and resize everything to that small screen but for right now it will be my browser of choice.
It handles new windows very well and like other said doesn't take alot of ram. i do find it runs better when installed on storage memory as oppose to memory card storage.
i am going to continue to test it though. I have not played with netfront 3.3 as much.. but i like opera alot better.so far.
those that have not tried it I highly recommend it.
I didn't like Opera 8.5. Personally, I prefer PIE with Multi IE... can't find any better!

Opera 8.60 for Windows Mobile, Pocket PC

Download and info here:
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/winmobileppc/

Downloaded the cab, installed to storage card (the new version removed the old version), ran Opera, it asked me if I wanted to register (17 Euros), I said Okay.
Then I had to tell Opera.com my IMEI in order to get a registration code. I found the IMEI in Settings\Indentity.
When I received the reg code, I ran Opera, selected Tools\register, and then there appeared a box asking for the reg code plus another box showing the "Device ID". The device ID number was completely different from my IMEI, and needless to say, now opera does not accept the registration code. Now I have to write Opera for a new reg code.
So, I would advise all to check the "device id" that opera uses, and provide that number when requesting the registration code, rather than the IMEI found in your PPC's Settings.
Is it just me, or does the large icon for opera have a white background (rather than being a ransparent background as it should be)?

Just my two cents, I've been a big user of the data service, particularly browsing, and found Opera the best browser... almost. A much better alternative is to RDP home, and use whatever you have there. No more need to worry about user agent strings, java or flash, plus, it's (suprisingly) a lot faster. The VJ fullscreenTSC utility is particulary useful for that purpose.

Was thinking of trialling Netfront - Can i ask why you think Opera beats Netfront in your eyes?
Thanks
Matt
i was using netfront before i switched to opera and i must say that opera is the best by far.
I find Opera completely useless for most sites:
try www.o2.co.uk on both Opera and Netfront 3.3 and see the difference.
or try new.bbc.co.uk on both
THERE IS NO WAY I WILL EVER USE OPERA.

Because with the 'fit to screen' option, Opera resizes the pixs and everything on the webpages - keeping them in proportion with the text. Netfront doesnt, so you end up with horizontal scroolbars and unreadable pages, while the opera-rendered ones looks just like the ones on a regular desktop computer.
I agree, my experience with opera is bad. It locks up all the time and can't be dissuaded from dumping tons of temp data in main storage memory.
Netfront is much better. The fonts on netfront are a bit wierd and its no way perfect though!

Exactly - bbc.co.uk is brilliant on opera 'fit to screen'. I find it unusable on netfront.
Sorry, I meant to say the Opera is useless on Universal (mine MDA Pro) compared to NetFront.
I wouldn't use it if they paid me to.
One advantage is netfront 3.3 allows you to log onto more secure sites and if you fiddle with the settings does look and work better for me than Opera but they still haven't relesed the final pay for version and my trial version has ran out

I use Opera on my Universal since the first Beta and all I can say is that it's the closest you can get to a "real" browsing experience on the PDA. The only "better" sollution would be to use some sort of RDP, as mentioned above.
I don't know what you do with your Universal, but on mine, in TrueVGA, Opera is simply great.
Almost as crappy as beta 2! Still very much work in progress - few bugs havn't been fixed, map hardware buttons??, flash??!. Also i'm not sure about you guys but Netfront (latest TP - D2) seems to render about 90% of websites (using WiFi) much quicker than Opera and is more responsive too. What's up with that?!?
Has anyone read the press release fully?
Here it is. http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/05/31/
One bit that jumped out at me was this.
The first operators to ship Windows Mobile devices with Opera Mobile(TM) pre-installed are T-Mobile through their Web'n'Walk offering, and the leading Japanese operator, Willcom.

Has anyone seen Opera on a released T-mobile phone, or is it more likely the t-mobile have been holding up the release of ROMs in the UK market until they could put Opera out at the same time? If this is true then should we be expecting to see an AKU2 ROM for the MDA PRO with opera embedded sometime soon?

I have found NetFront to be AWESOME. I have it set so I see full webpages with very little jumbling or problems.
Combine it with FlexMail and you got a basic internet package on the go..
That said, I will give the new Opera a spin.. Why not.. Everything since I installed the latest DOPOD ROM has been working flawlessly and well I cant have that..

Considering that the opinions are so divergent, yet we all come equipped with (pretty similar) sets of eyeballs, I reckon I'm going to take screenshots of both netfront and opera rendering of common webpages and will post them here.
I am a web designer and think the differences of opinions are all to do with how the site's are coded in terms of fixed widths and such like in the html or xhtml and CSS.
Netfront is definitly better for me as web designer for checking on the fly changes for clients sites but for simply viewing sites informtion then I think the new opera mini works quite well and keeps data trafic low.

Can Opera be inactivated on HD?

I am using a software which provides me information in the forms of texts and figures. Everytime when I opened figures on my HD, Opera activated itself and took over the role of viewing figures. Subsequently, all the informations including texts and figures must be viewed by the Opera, and crashes frequently occured. I wonder if Opera could be inactivated so to prevent this problem.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Can anyone help?
I think your problem is that Opera is declared to be the standard browser. Maybe changing this would help. As far as I know this is done by changing some registry keys.
Is it possible to change the link in Touchflo 3D on my blackstone from opera to another browser ?
I dream to click on the Internet'tab, and when I tap on Earth's picture :NetFront run instead of Opera.
I couldn't find a way to change the default browser. Does anybody know how to do it?
I remember having to do this on one of my older PDAs. I believe the instructions that I followed were roughly similar to the ones found at this link.
Note that this is actually for Windows Mobile 5, but there's a good chance they will still work. Just make sure you note down all of your original settings before you change anything. And, as always, try at your own risk.

i had the same problem. i was using uptodate medical program. the software is designed to be used with PIE. so what i did was google the regedit. there are a lot of regs to be editted to change from opera to PIE. basically what u could do is open regedit on a pda without opera browser. just change the main .html, .htts etc to pie. hope this helps for a start. but if you still have problem. post a reply and i'll give full regedit amendments. thanks
please e_cam23, i am also a fellow uptodate user and i have the same problem.. using uptodate on the blackstone is a painful experience for me :'( sometimes it works and sometimes opera opens and then crashes and takes me back to the previous uptodate page pleeeeeease help me out i am trying to make IE the default bs i couldn't on my own..
UpToDate
In the latest version(16.3) of UptoDate, crashes occur far less frequently. Try it out and you will feel relieved!
I am not sure where to get it from i got it from a friend on a dvd..
forgot to say that all the method i found for touch pro and diamond and kaiser did not work on my hd.. editing registry values in RAI under shell to iexplore and Pocket ie,, also a file by darkness which tells me unsuccessful installment when i run it :S
In new opera (official release), there is an option default browser inactivation.
It may help you, freinds
change default browser on Touch HD
double post
Sorry
All,
from my understanding Opera is 'hardcoded' in TF3D, changes in the registry will not have the effect you want. From my knowledge there are two ways to overcome this.
1. use SSMaPa to patch another default browser into Manila.exe (works also for some other applications)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407777
2. use VJBrisk to route the program launch of Opera to your preferred browser
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477519
I hope this helps
Regards
install new version of opera doesnt mater wether on the device memory or the storage card but i did it on the storage and then uninstall it you'll end up with explorer being the default browser for everything and this is the only way that worked for me
It may help
