How to free up more memory for running apps - P3300, MDA Compact III upgrading etc.

I have a 2G SD card so put most apps on that. How can I free up some of the Internal Memory to allocate it to running apps instead of storage? . Already hit a problemS in trying to take a quick snap, but has to free up memory before it ran, thius the moment was lost !!!!

have you got X-Button set to actually close programs?
Start -> Settings -> System -> X-Button
Select "Enable the "X" button to end running programs"
Another thing to check is that you are saving Pics/Vids to Storage Card rather than My Documents on the Phone Memory.
Hope this Helps

To free up more RAM memory, after closing all running programs, it is also useful execute the free application Oxios Hibernate.

Sorry if stupid question, but what does that do?

After a soft reset we have the maximum size of available ram memory.
When we close all running programs the size of ram free is smaller than maximum.
Hibernate or other similar application enable you to unlock further ram memory not in use and, therefore, to obtain a size near the maximum.

if you are using wm6 just enable X button
Start -> Settings -> System -> Task -> Enable X-Button
if you are using wm5 download X button from wiki xda-developers and Start -> Settings -> System -> Task -> Enable X-Button
by the way you will still need need to soft reset ur device once in a while say once a week

memory leakage

Dear All,
i'm using wm5, i noticed there is a memory leakage , i'm using batery status , every program i open memory decreases then when i close the program using resco task manager , the memory used by the program is not released.
is there any way to avoid this ???
Try using Oxios Memory to recover leaked memory.
I did but still not all the memory recovered , as example as i restart i have 21 MB free after using the device for 6-8 hours , i find the memory 17-18 MB , and i'm sure that all the programs are properly closed.
If you opened a lot of applications in those 6 to 8 hours then that is normal.
You can't just close the app and think that it will be like you have never opened it...that it will remove every bit from memory.
for example, I start with 24MB of free RAM after reset, and trough two or tree days it drops down to 19-22MB dependinh of which and how many apps I have started meanwhile.
Installed apps, even those stored on a SD card will create unneccessary files in the main memory taking some memory away. Check these locations to see if you can delete files from apps that are not needed for the app to run. (main memory) Application Data/Volatile, windows directory/app mgr./active sync (control log) several bytes can be safely deleted here. Look for programs that have been removed, but are still in the app mgr. folder. If files can't be found, use the app that newbie2 offered or this one. Works for me!
Same for me
Man i get the samething. I use the Oxias but it only frees up a couple hundred kb to maybe a few mb. Crazy that I can get it all the way down to 2-3mb of ram. I start with in the 23-26mb free range. I open the following:
Slide2Unlock by A_C
Iphone launcher by Grumps
PocketCM by Tene
I have softkey by water
and Hbutton running
I occassionally check my email and get a few text messages. Outside of that, not a lot of major memory usage.
Even with that going I start at about 21 - 23mb. How is getting down that low. And what will actually work to get it back?
CG
It could be that these programs you have installed are the cause. I think I recall seeing an issue like this related to Slide2Unlock. But the truth is, any badly/improperly written software can do this.

Does anyone know of an actual GOOD program out there that will automatically dump the RAM cache at interval or preset limits?? And do it with a noticable difference??
I have seen others using Resco, task manager and few other programs but most people report the same problem. I know M$ has set the cache up to do this on its own but it is just not as affective as I would like it to be. I know that the short answer is to give up the apps I like. But, I would like to work around that if possible.

You can clear the Opera history & cache while in Opera, clear cache and delete files while in PIE. With the attached app, which I use ALL the time, can do all this with 1 tap. It also gets rid of your most recent program thst was opened from the start menu. Lots of items can be cleaned and eliminated safely allowing more memory. Check the box by the item/s you want the app to focus on.

how much storage memory do you guys have free? I have 19MB, is this low? I've only installed a handful of files, and then I have 134MB free in program, is this because i installed too many files to my device?
ive got 68.70 free in storage and 120 free in program.
storage is exactly that storage and program is to run programs.
think of it like your computer. your hard drive would be your storage memory and the RAM would be the program memory.
well if thats the case shouldnt it be switched? shouldn't I have more storage memory free than program? I havent installed that much and I'm running out of storage!
I'm having the same problem
After i had installed 2.03 ROM, i had 35-40 MB free on storage.
Now i have installed some things (NOT on storage) and i have installed XBmod HD V1.8 and now i have only 23 MB free.
I feel my diamond is getting slow again!
How on earth can i get back to 30-40 free MB or something...
Yes, i have cleared the opera cach/history etc!
Done a hard-reset. Will keep my phone clear now. 57MB free on storage

I only got 111.02 MB total RAM?
Try a program called "SKtools" it has free up ram utility, works great.
Also Under HTC task manager go to "button" in the sub menu and select "end programs by tapping X"
I have found a 9mb video file using file explorer, but I couldn't delete it in whatever menu I was in, because the advanced soft key was not touchable. Now I can't find it at all, is there an easy way I could locate this 9mb file that seems to be hiding in my phone?
I found it, it's a file labeled temp in windows media player, yet it says cannot play the file, and no options to delete, any ideaas?

I also recommend SKtools. Does more than just freeing Ram. Great program for cleaning and increasing performance with built in Total commander like features.

HELP!!!!!

My storage memory keeps dropping, seems like something is using it up because if I leave it overnight it chews up all my onboard storage memory and it gives me a warning in the morning but when I do a soft reset it all comes back. This happened yesterday so I hard resetted my phone and did a full backup dated March 15th 2009. Now its still using up my onboard storage memory automatically it went through 5 megs now in a matter of 15 mins. Can someone help pls? Do I need to do another hard reset and install each program one by one to see which one is causing this?
1') Are you using a custom ROM?
1'') In order to see which process is using up your storage memory i suggest downloading the SKTools trial and launching the processes util. It displays the CPU time, memory and heap usage...etc. This might give you a hint of whose eating up your storage space.
2) Were you using tools like Advanced Config Tool?

I'm using the stock R1A rom
Yes I have Advanced config Tool but wasn't using the program at the time could this program cause the issue?
The X1 already has a better task manager than the one in settings. If you go to the Windows folder in the file explorer and find the tskmngr.exe, you can view all programs running and processes. No need to download anything. I'd use that to take a look. Installing another program seems like it might just exacerbate the problem.
If you wasn't using the tool before these symptoms first appeared then its not the tool.
Could you go here http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_downloads.html#sktools and download the trial in order to see the processes that are active on your phone?
I also think there was a free tool called Advanced Task Manager, but I don't remember if it displays the memory usage.

Yes, but unlike the normal task manager he can use the other tools to see which services are started, what programs launch at start up and it has a registry optimizer and a memory cleaner.
And the X1 task manager WON'T show the hidden processes already running on the device.
I think installing one more program won't do more harm than already done.
ok I just installed SKTools v4.4.7.1 how do I find programs that are using up my rom?
1) Use the "CPU Usage" tool to see which processes are actively consuming cpu time. You should have around 18 processes there
2) For those processes that use, say, more than 0.5% use the "Processes" tool to see the amount of memory it consumes.
You could use the other tools to clean the registry, etc while you're at it.
SkTools also has a "Optimize tool" You could select Maximum Memory and see if it still bugs (you can always revert to the default settings if you don't like the performance).

Thx for the help, i've looked at the processes and looked them up on google and nothing out of the norm. I also used to optimize tool and it runs a bit quicker, so far i'm not losing any storage memory but i will find out tomorrow morning. I'll update when I get home from work tomorrow.
I just lost another 7megs from my storage memory and I didnt even download a thing. man this sucks.
This is beginning to bug me as well
Use the Clean! tool. When it finishes analyzing, go and check the files/folders it displays one by one. Do you notice some files or folders that have an abnormally large size? Most should be under 1mb (except maybe the GoogleMaps cache)
If that doesn't reveal a clue...I'm left clueless Maybe hardreset/update your ROM?
Here's an update,
Last night when I installed SKTOOLS I enabled freeUP RAM service and also Shadow cleaner in the shadow services. So again when I went to sleep I had my rom at 107MB's after I deleted a few pictures that came with the rom. This morning when I woke up I had the same pop-up, clicked on the icon at the top right hand corner and it said 0.2MB's then I guess the shawdow cleaner kicked in and my MB's started to change at a very fast pace it went back up to 107MB's within 3 seconds. I will see if it does the same thing when I wake up tomorrow. But that was really weird this morning I have never seen anything like that before.
Did u check as I said with the help of the "Clean!" tool to see if there are junk/temporary files or folders that have an abnormal large size?
My suggestion is disabling the Shadow Cleaner for now, then when you start running low on space again, use the Clean tool to see which temp files are big...that will immediately tell you which program is bugging...
Ok so from catgories I clicked on cleanup then clicked on temp and junk files is that what you want me to go in when all my rom is used up?
I just lost 2 megs
I went into SKtools and it says
Temp folder 2
\Application Data\Volatile
If you do a horizontal scroll in that tool (Clean!) you have a tab where you see the size of the Temp/Junk files and folders. What folder has a big size? Is it the Temp2 (because for me thats the RamDisk)
I have SPB insight installed on my today screen here's a screen shot,
So I think I found the problem, it might be SPB insight... here's a german forum translated into english using google language tools
http://translate.google.ca/translat...data-volatile.html&sl=de&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
He says in a short time he accumulates 30-40 megs...
Damn...
So did uninstalling spb Insight solve your problem?
Like your screen setup btw
I didnt uninstall insight... I just removed it from my today plug in then I went into the program to remove all data and set it only to manual update.
I lost another 2 megs so 4 in total in the last little while, its all IMGxxxx.tmp in my \Application Data\Volatile folder. I'll leave my insight turned off for now to see if I keep losing storage memory.

What apps are you talking about. most memory space goes to pics and music, which can be stored on the card. And you can install extract programs on your card instead of you internal memory.
fmadr
but that using up my memory i save everthing to my memory card but main memory still be draining it self dont know why
SD cards are only ever storage memory. The card behaves like a disk drive, that appears to be connected to the mount point '\Storage Card', or whatever your machine is configured to call it, there is a registry hack to change it if you want.
Storage space must be read into main memory, before the CPU can get at it. Access time is pretty quick, but nowhere near main memory speeds.
It's there for storing stuff as its name implies. Apps, data, movies, music, etc etc. It's not much use for anything else.
It sounds like you're confusing program and storage memory. If you're getting program memory errors, then you need to get a task manager and get better control of running applications/processes, or get a task manager that closes applications instead of minimizing them with the 'x' button.
If you are having storage memory issues, then you need to check for log files that might be hogging all the storage memory. Or get a utility like ClearTemp to empty out temporary folders. If you do a lot of streaming, sometimes you can get large stream dumps that aren't properly deleted and that hog a lot of memory.

You have probably some large log files, created by ActiveSync or some other program. Use SKTools or something similar to find it, clean Your main memory and disable the logging once You know where it comes from. That way it doesn't fill up Your main memory.

SD-Card Driver 4 Read Speed
Hello all,
While mentioning SK-Tools ;
Not so long ago I stumbled over this thread;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2915068&postcount=1
So use SK-Tools its benchmarking capabilities to test your SD-Card before(!) and after the 'driver' (tnyynt SD TuneUP) mentioned above is installed!!!
It's kinda technical and a lot of 'know how' is discussed, but the main thing = tnyynt SD TuneUP, I assure you, will boost your SD-Card READiNG-PERFORMANCE!!!
Ofcourse, making a backup in advance could make a difference for everyone installing this,
Senax
P.S. I did not make a backup in advance!
How many sms & email do you have, both of these save to the main memory, a few hundred+ will soon fill it up. Internet Explorer cache is the other one to check. These are the 2 biggest memory users.
Can you cook? If so Extendir endir may help in achieving more free Main Memory space...
Hope this helps.
they should make you be able to use you memory card as your main memory or least fix instead of worrying about the windowsmobile7series that not coming out in the end of this year.

And which memory because you are talking about installing apps when that has nothing directly to do with operating memory.
Installing on mem card doesn't "save" anything in this regard.
I'm also low on Storage-mem on the phone - even though I install programs on the memorycard whenever possible (and of course put my pictures, music and videos on the mem-card as well!).
I have 177mb free Program-memory on the phone but only 9.3mb storage-mem.
This makes programs such as the YouTube-app very unhappy as it seems to only be able to cache to internal storage-memory :-(
On older versions of WM you could change how the phone used it's internal memory with a slider in settings.
The phone also seemed to adjust this automatically as it became necessary.
Now however it seems that this possibility is gone (both manual and automatic adjustment).
I hope it is only my ignorance speaking so here's hoping that someone has a solution to this problem (fingers crossed)

If you have used up storage mem then that's it but what have you installed to use it.
Mine shows 152Mb storage and 252Mb program memory free. 27 apps installed and everything running fine.
Do you install a lot of application from the Marketplace? If so, this defaults to install on internal memory
I have exactly the same issue, and it's very frustrating. Pretty crazy really as I can't use the phone for anything that uses device storage. No youtube, no media busy web pages and some apps refuse to run smoothly, or at all.
Like you, I'm always having to delete Opera & IE's cache files just to keep the phone functioning! I've also deleted all my Co-Pilot files on the card and the device - this helped a little and gave me another 5 or 6 MB of device space.
With all cache's cleared and around 30 programs installed (all on the card) I now only have 7.8MB of free device storage, which disappears within a few minutes when using Opera.
Out of the 336MB of program storage I have filled 153MB with 182MB free - I wish I could control how much memory is allocated to the program memory and device memory.
Very strange...I have any large applications like games, copliot etc installed on my SD card, only small apps on my internal memory...
Total storage: 200.15MB
Used storage: 119.99MB
Free storage: 80.16MB
Total program: 336.93MB
Used program: 170.54MB
Free profram: 166.89MB
i have a 16 meg Ram Disk (see the 'ram disk' thread ) and my system temp folders and caches, plus opera cache have been moved to it. Opera now runs really fast, and the cache is no longer taking up the storage memory, plus when you soft reset it clears out the cache too.

I have since day 1 installed all my programs to the memory card apart from a couple of programs and hotfixes which I though would be smarter if I installed to the device - but these are tiny. I have also set my marketplace to default to the memory card and removed all co-pilot files and set all podcasts to the microSD too.
Total Storage: 200.27
Used Storage: 191.48
Free Storage: 8.79 (whohooo, that's much bigger than normal!)
Total Program: 336.93
Used Program: 143.89
Free Program: 192.93
SD Card: Over 2GB's free
I really have no idea what's using all my internal storage.
Yep - that's about the same for me.
Only a few apps are installed directly on the phone (the ones that install without letting the user decide where they want them) so what's hogging my phone-storage is beyond me...
But I really don't need close to 200 mb of program-memory, is there really no way to use some of this memory for storage - as was possible with earlier versions of WM?
Have you tried importing to PC, such as pictures and other things, using Windows Mobile Centre?

I can't help but think that you've missed the point - when the storage memory is full the phone ceases to function properly!
It uses this area of storage for the cache files for the browser and for applications such as you tube. When I start the youtube app, if it opens at all, it will say 'Critically low on system memory...etc' and shut down after playing a few seconds. If I have many tabs open in opera the same memory problem occurs.
The 'Device Storage' partition is full (with what I don't know) whilst the 'Device Program' partition is almost empty. We have no control over what sizes those partitions are. Maybe i've got it all wrong but either way it's really limiting the usefulness of the phone.

yes there is. as I mentioned in post 9, I use a ram disk for my temp files and cache. lives in program memory but shows up as a (fast) memory card.
search for the ram disk thread.
also, as regards figuring out what is taking up all the space, use a file manager (don't forget to unhide all files) and search for everything over....say....1 meg.

No I haven't missed the point, I just don't get the problem and I'm trying to figure out why not?
And that would help you. Something is causing certain phones to behave this way. I use youtube and opera and never have to clear out anything.
I currently have 36 apps showing on my start menu screen and memory is showing as Storage 152.13 Mb free and program 313.80 Mb free.
I run Titanium (not manilla UI) and I have LeoLite ROM installed.
Something in that setup is causing the phone to respond differently!
