Dear All,
i'm using wm5, i noticed there is a memory leakage , i'm using batery status , every program i open memory decreases then when i close the program using resco task manager , the memory used by the program is not released.
is there any way to avoid this ???
Try using Oxios Memory to recover leaked memory.
I did but still not all the memory recovered , as example as i restart i have 21 MB free after using the device for 6-8 hours , i find the memory 17-18 MB , and i'm sure that all the programs are properly closed.
If you opened a lot of applications in those 6 to 8 hours then that is normal.
You can't just close the app and think that it will be like you have never opened it...that it will remove every bit from memory.
for example, I start with 24MB of free RAM after reset, and trough two or tree days it drops down to 19-22MB dependinh of which and how many apps I have started meanwhile.
Installed apps, even those stored on a SD card will create unneccessary files in the main memory taking some memory away. Check these locations to see if you can delete files from apps that are not needed for the app to run. (main memory) Application Data/Volatile, windows directory/app mgr./active sync (control log) several bytes can be safely deleted here. Look for programs that have been removed, but are still in the app mgr. folder. If files can't be found, use the app that newbie2 offered or this one. Works for me!
Same for me
Man i get the samething. I use the Oxias but it only frees up a couple hundred kb to maybe a few mb. Crazy that I can get it all the way down to 2-3mb of ram. I start with in the 23-26mb free range. I open the following:
Slide2Unlock by A_C
Iphone launcher by Grumps
PocketCM by Tene
I have softkey by water
and Hbutton running
I occassionally check my email and get a few text messages. Outside of that, not a lot of major memory usage.
Even with that going I start at about 21 - 23mb. How is getting down that low. And what will actually work to get it back?
CG
It could be that these programs you have installed are the cause. I think I recall seeing an issue like this related to Slide2Unlock. But the truth is, any badly/improperly written software can do this.

Does anyone know of an actual GOOD program out there that will automatically dump the RAM cache at interval or preset limits?? And do it with a noticable difference??
I have seen others using Resco, task manager and few other programs but most people report the same problem. I know M$ has set the cache up to do this on its own but it is just not as affective as I would like it to be. I know that the short answer is to give up the apps I like. But, I would like to work around that if possible.

You can clear the Opera history & cache while in Opera, clear cache and delete files while in PIE. With the attached app, which I use ALL the time, can do all this with 1 tap. It also gets rid of your most recent program thst was opened from the start menu. Lots of items can be cleaned and eliminated safely allowing more memory. Check the box by the item/s you want the app to focus on.

how to make storage big space? although installed in SD memory, storage memory always low.
This could be a result of the number of programs you have running in the background. Check your Running Programs and see if you have lots of unnecessary programs using up your memory.

It doesn't matter where you are installing them; if you have them running in the background they still need memory
Just check your running programs. On a desktop PC when you minimize a program they go into your taskbar, but in Pocket PC they just hide themselves in the background. Its a common misconception that the "x" in the upper right hand corner of the screen closes the program; all it does it minimizes it. Or atleast most of them, some programs a actually very well designed and actually "close". At any case, use the "running programs" utility that came standard with your Magician to see how many programs you have running - it's actually quite amazing what you'll find.
I have a similar problem but mine starts at 20mb free after soft reset but after each sync (disconnect and reconnect) it drops by about 6mb until it reaches 7 or 8mb and stays there until I soft reset again?
I am not aware of any invoked programs that eat up memory when I sync and I have very little data in my sync files folder?
Suggestions welcome (except hard reset!!).
Thanks,
OB.
obarnes, That true. why after soft reset it used more memory. supposed to be free more memory.
Activesync eats up memory everytime you hook it up. That memory does not get freed up. Approx 3MB gets blocked away for every sync you do - so if you start of with 20 and you sync up 3 or 4 times then you're memory will slowly start to dissapear. This is a common occurence, the only thing I could suggest is to soft-reset 2-3 times a day. Additionally there are programs that can eliminate tiny chunks of memory being used up by duplicate processes that occur when you soft-reset your machine, they don't really effect your device; but every byte helps. The program is by Scarybear and it's called notifyclear (or something like that). I've recently did a maintenance on my device and managed to clear up almost 10MB just by moving unnecessary files and clearing up the registry and redundant junk from the machine. Hope this helps.
Obarnes,
The "memory leak" could be due to a program you have installed also. I used to face the problem because of Battery Pack Pro v.2 and havent faced a "memory leak" since I uninstalled it.
I think all of you have seen this.. Free program stats from around 25 Mb and keeps on going down even if you completely kill the processes. is there a tool which actually kills the resident dlls and other crap in memory.. Please advice.. i want to get out this habbit of soft reset after couple of days just to bring my memory back up where it belongs ;-)
Cheers

Yeah, leaking memory is also one of the very few things I hate on my Wizard
I also would like to know if there is a Memory Cleaner that works like it should and not only kills open programs.
Had problem also. But the Internet Exploder was to blame. I had the history settings to 30 days. Which is the default. Back to 0 days and everything was hunkydory again.
I had problems with memory too. I had less than 1MB of storage memory left. So I went from a custom 2.17 ROM to Mr. Clean AKU 2.3 and changed the Registry setting for IE as follows:
; IE Cache to storage card
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"Cache"="\\Storage Card\\Temporary Internet Files"
I've used this ROM for a week now with lots of programs. I have an average of 25 MB of storage free and the system is fast.
I have experienced no problems whatsoever.
If i don't even open the IE will it still be a memory hog?? i don't understand that.. I can understand that if i use IE all the time it will cause problems but if i don't even use it why woud my memory drop with time. Cans omeone please explain. I am not trying to offend neone here but just wante dto know. I can definitely try the reg settings. Please let me know.
Thanks
Zobie
Don't confuse ROM with RAM and storage with program mem. I think the topic starter referred to his RAM mem becoming less every day, resulting in low program mem and slow operations, needing a reset to clear the RAM and speed up the device.
The IE cache is stored in ROM and will only fill your storage but not slow down your device.
memory leaks are unfortunately a standard issue with PPC devices, I have always suffered from them on both WM 2003 SE and Wm5 devices. For me a soft reset now and then clears it up, but I find it an annoying "feature" as well.
I think like Windows its the In Memory DLLs which are the culprit. I wonder if there can be tools for detailed view of memory for Xp why not WM5.

What are the "In Memory DLL's"? Never heard of such a thing.
The memory that slows your device is the addressable application memory, which is a total of 32 MB. You cannot change that or add to it.
Think of it as the same as the Virtual Memory (VM) in Windows XP on your desktop. Every application you open reserves a bit of this virtual memory. Some apps willingly give it up when they close - some that are not as well written do not. A soft reset when you see the device slowing is about all you can do.
My only other advice is that skinned applications - particularly Today screen plugins - use up this addressable memory very quickly. This includes Wisbar Advance2, PocketBreeze and iLauncher, and any weather program. If you are running these, you will always have similar issues. Find an acceptable mix of skinned apps that you must have, and try doing without the rest just to see how it treats your device's memory.
And if you want to see what processes are running, and how much memory they are using, try MemMaid by Dinarsoft or SK-Tools. Great programs.
Amen. I wonder how much is held in reserve by the system in case you start the app again? Real Windows has been doing that for a long time, I wouldn't be surprised if micro Windows did it as well. Kind of reminds me of years ago when NT would report how it actually used memory and the end result was there was almost zero bytes "free" because all memory was always used for something, it didn't let anything sit around doing nothing. But since users didn't get it, MS wrote the taskman and so on to report something as "free memory" even though it wasn't really free. Finally, a lot of apps were designed to hide, not close, when you select the "X". If one of those task manager apps just blows the app away, does it bother cleaning up after the app which wasn't given the chance to clean up after itself by closing correctly?

Depends on which task mamger you are using; some use the WMClose command instead of the Kill command. Big difference!
Tools Like Memmaid SK-Tools don't allow you to identify rouge elements in memory which nolonger have a parent process running. It is those elemts which eat up the memory. I have SPB tools to actually close the application but even then the memory keeps on falling. I guess there is no tool as of today like Taskmanager or even RAM Optimizer for PPC. A Tool like RAM Optimizer would check for the elements which are residing in RAM and are no longer being used. XDA developers can surely write something using the .NE Framework.

Do you happen to know of a couple that use the WMClose command? I've used HandySwitcher most recently and MagicButton in the past, but have no idea which method(s) they use.
Thank you.
Geoffrey
There must 40 threads on this topics by now. I concur with J-Mac that today plugins are mostly to blame. I use Journal Bar and perform a soft reset roughly every other day. To help the situation I also use 2 programs which I find invaluable - The first is Smartskey which allows you close a program rather than minimise it (its a free download on this forum). The second is SK Tools Free up RAM application which works reasonably well but only delays the enevitable soft reset. It's effectiveness decreases the longer the device remains active.
I always have problems with WM5 memory management, which led me to experiment more on some free apps out there. This is a personal trick I just recently learned from all the AKU 3 versions that are coming out that I have been trying out and would like to share with everyone.
I will attach OXIOS Memory CAB file below my post, you need both Oxios Hibernate and Oxios Close Apps for this trick to work.
This is the theory for the increase of memory: basically what I wanted to happen is to only have 1 application running in the background no matter what. Thus, opening another app automatically closes the other app, even just pressing the OK button. Just like what a Palm device does with regards to application handling.
One draw back though, you are eliminating the ability of the WM5 device to run multiple applications at the same time.
OK enough of the explanations, here is what you have to do:
1st: Download the copy of OXIOS apps I provided.
2nd: Run the CAB file to install.
3rd: Go to Windows>Start Menu>Programs>Accessories.
4th: Copy the shortcuts for both Oxios Close Apps and Oxios Hibernate.
5th: Go to Windows>Start Up.
6th: Paste both Oxios Close Apps and Oxios Hibernate.
7th: Perform a soft reset.
Basically this would make WM5 behave like a palm device. You can now only open one application at one time, thus ensuring you have enough memory for your current application to run.
You don't even need to close any app anymore manually, since it is done automatically for you now.
There are some exceptions to this however and they are:
1: Contacts Application
2: MMS Application
3: Calendar Application
4: Phone Application
These 4 apps can be opened all at the same time without closing automatically, a good thing because you want them to work together when sending messages or files. Plus, you also want the phone ON at all times.
Good luck and let me know if you prefer this solution or suggestion.
hmmm...
I don't like the idea of not being in control of my device...
I've been happy doing it manually with Magic Button, and since yesterday, Wisbar Advance 2.
I think the extra tap is worth it!
that's great, maybe it's good for me, thanks for your cab file.
i tried these apps before, but not in this fashion. it never really fully recovered all the memory that it was trying to recover.
is there still a gradual memory leak, or does this manage to retain the full amount of memory after each closure.
i start with 29 - 30mb, it drops to about 18mb, so I reset it. does this stop the memory drop and reduction and totally reclaim the memory on closure of every app?

No, unfortunately, but based on using them on the latest AKU 3 ROMs, Oxios apps are getting better in recovering the lost memory.
thanks! will think about installing this. currently, im just using memmaid's reclaim ram plug in. Im not sure if it's just placebo but it works somehow..
My storage memory keeps dropping, seems like something is using it up because if I leave it overnight it chews up all my onboard storage memory and it gives me a warning in the morning but when I do a soft reset it all comes back. This happened yesterday so I hard resetted my phone and did a full backup dated March 15th 2009. Now its still using up my onboard storage memory automatically it went through 5 megs now in a matter of 15 mins. Can someone help pls? Do I need to do another hard reset and install each program one by one to see which one is causing this?
1') Are you using a custom ROM?
1'') In order to see which process is using up your storage memory i suggest downloading the SKTools trial and launching the processes util. It displays the CPU time, memory and heap usage...etc. This might give you a hint of whose eating up your storage space.
2) Were you using tools like Advanced Config Tool?

Yes I have Advanced config Tool but wasn't using the program at the time could this program cause the issue?
The X1 already has a better task manager than the one in settings. If you go to the Windows folder in the file explorer and find the tskmngr.exe, you can view all programs running and processes. No need to download anything. I'd use that to take a look. Installing another program seems like it might just exacerbate the problem.
If you wasn't using the tool before these symptoms first appeared then its not the tool.
Could you go here http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_downloads.html#sktools and download the trial in order to see the processes that are active on your phone?
I also think there was a free tool called Advanced Task Manager, but I don't remember if it displays the memory usage.

Yes, but unlike the normal task manager he can use the other tools to see which services are started, what programs launch at start up and it has a registry optimizer and a memory cleaner.
And the X1 task manager WON'T show the hidden processes already running on the device.
I think installing one more program won't do more harm than already done.
ok I just installed SKTools v4.4.7.1 how do I find programs that are using up my rom?
1) Use the "CPU Usage" tool to see which processes are actively consuming cpu time. You should have around 18 processes there
2) For those processes that use, say, more than 0.5% use the "Processes" tool to see the amount of memory it consumes.
You could use the other tools to clean the registry, etc while you're at it.
SkTools also has a "Optimize tool" You could select Maximum Memory and see if it still bugs (you can always revert to the default settings if you don't like the performance).

Thx for the help, i've looked at the processes and looked them up on google and nothing out of the norm. I also used to optimize tool and it runs a bit quicker, so far i'm not losing any storage memory but i will find out tomorrow morning. I'll update when I get home from work tomorrow.
I just lost another 7megs from my storage memory and I didnt even download a thing. man this sucks.
This is beginning to bug me as well
Use the Clean! tool. When it finishes analyzing, go and check the files/folders it displays one by one. Do you notice some files or folders that have an abnormally large size? Most should be under 1mb (except maybe the GoogleMaps cache)
If that doesn't reveal a clue...I'm left clueless Maybe hardreset/update your ROM?
Here's an update,
Last night when I installed SKTOOLS I enabled freeUP RAM service and also Shadow cleaner in the shadow services. So again when I went to sleep I had my rom at 107MB's after I deleted a few pictures that came with the rom. This morning when I woke up I had the same pop-up, clicked on the icon at the top right hand corner and it said 0.2MB's then I guess the shawdow cleaner kicked in and my MB's started to change at a very fast pace it went back up to 107MB's within 3 seconds. I will see if it does the same thing when I wake up tomorrow. But that was really weird this morning I have never seen anything like that before.
Did u check as I said with the help of the "Clean!" tool to see if there are junk/temporary files or folders that have an abnormal large size?
My suggestion is disabling the Shadow Cleaner for now, then when you start running low on space again, use the Clean tool to see which temp files are big...that will immediately tell you which program is bugging...
Ok so from catgories I clicked on cleanup then clicked on temp and junk files is that what you want me to go in when all my rom is used up?
I just lost 2 megs
I went into SKtools and it says
Temp folder 2
\Application Data\Volatile
If you do a horizontal scroll in that tool (Clean!) you have a tab where you see the size of the Temp/Junk files and folders. What folder has a big size? Is it the Temp2 (because for me thats the RamDisk)
I have SPB insight installed on my today screen here's a screen shot,
So I think I found the problem, it might be SPB insight... here's a german forum translated into english using google language tools
http://translate.google.ca/translat...data-volatile.html&sl=de&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
He says in a short time he accumulates 30-40 megs...
Damn...
So did uninstalling spb Insight solve your problem?
Like your screen setup btw
I didnt uninstall insight... I just removed it from my today plug in then I went into the program to remove all data and set it only to manual update.
I lost another 2 megs so 4 in total in the last little while, its all IMGxxxx.tmp in my \Application Data\Volatile folder. I'll leave my insight turned off for now to see if I keep losing storage memory.

'Storage memory is critically low. If the storage memory is not increased, other programs may not be able to start. Use File Explorer to delete files that are no longer needed or move some files to a storage card'
Any advice please?
Simple advice- you've got too much installed or saved to internal memory rather than the storage card.
Common culprits are browser caches for PIE and Opera, the HTC Album cache, media files like videos, music and pictures etc.
Use File Explorer to look in all the sub folders of My Documents as a starting point. Try moving all the big files over the the storage card.
Download Treeview from Microsoft Marketplace- it's free and can show you where all the storage memory is going.

You can do either- as long as you connect using ActiveSync rather than Disk Drive mode.
Using the PC is probably a slightly easier experience as Windows Explorer is more informative than the mobile version!

You don't have to do all that. It works great out of the box as well. Those are just possibilities, to customize it and tweak it.
Uninstall everything you have installed on your phone and reinstall it to the storage card. Always install applications to the storage card. That should fix your 'problem'.
Additionally, open the File Explorer, go to \Windows and delete the folder YouTube. That gives you additional free space but the folder comes back when you watch YouTube videos, so you can do this from time to time.
can i drag and drop my applications folder into the storage card via the pc?
Yes, but then the links in the start menu won't work anymore. Think of what happens when you move the Program Files folder on your PC. It's the same here.
can someone give me a step by step guide for doing this task please.
Go to Settings, Manage Applications, Uninstall Applications. There, uninstall all the applications you have installed to teh main memory.
Then reinstall them, this time to the storage card.
And delete the YouTube cache from time to time.
When we're speaking of free storage memory, how much memory do you all have free?
Mine is around 20 mb, is it to small?
Beacuse when i watched a video on youtube i got the same message as in the first post.

As I suggested in the earlier post, this is nothing to do with installed programs- most of those are pretty small and are unlikely to be grabbing the majority of your memory.
It is most likely that you have allowed some large files to be stored in the main memory. By default the phone DOES store most big user files like photos and videos on a storage card, but perhaps that has been altered somewhere?
You need to use a file finding utility to sort this- if Treesize is not available in your locality via Marketplace (or you can't access Marketplace) then you can try Spacefinder, a tiny, free program that will sort your files and folders in order of size, giving a hint as to where the memory may have gone. You can also download Treesize Mobile direct from Jam Software
Stuff like CleanRAM, SKTools etc is OK for clearing RAM but has no effect on Storage Memory apart from clearing some caches, though this can help a lot.
One other tip- as has been suggested, try and install programs onto a storage card, but not if they are system programs like Today plug-ins or keyboards etc. These must go into device memory otherwise you may get some startup errors.
This baffles me. I have just got an HD2 to replace my HD - I started to put exactly the same programs onto the HD2 as I had previously installed on my HD (I install all programs on the device). I got the low memory warning long before I put all the programmes on - on a brand new device with no internet browsing/video/music on device itself.
My HD has more memory than my HD2 - how is that possible?
None of these explanations seem to explain how this happens on my HD2 but not my old HD. I have NEVER had a low memory warning on my HD despite having used it for over a year and having installed more on it than I have managed on the HD2.
I have recently found the pre-installed Google Maps created a cache folder in device memory and pumped it up to 25 Megs. Deleted it of course.

The HD2 has more memory (ROM) but a huge chunk (150MB) is taken up by all the HTC Sense gubbins, leaving a relatively smaller amount free to the user. Ultra light cooked ROMs give about 150MB more ROM, and light ROMs about 100MB more than the default ROM.
It also seems that a lot of caching is going on- Album, Googlemaps, Browsers etc eating up ROM.
