Hello,
after Using Meschles Touch 3.1 WWE -Rom I wondered how I used up my remaining 46mb main Storage, since I usually put all programs etc on my 8GB SDHC-Card.
Is there any tool that would give me an idea, what programms use how much of my storage? (in Activesync I do not see whether programs are in main or external storage, SKTools does also not show all my installed programes).
How much would I save round about, if I start to compile some programs into self-cooked roms?
How can I find out, wheather my pagefile -memero is 2, 4, 6 or 8 MB?
Thanks for your help
You may go to
mydevice>application data>volatile
open volatile then delet whatever inside it. You may get extra 9 mega.
pocket mechanic is great for that as it. It can also move programs from main memory to storage card (including all relevant files, registry info etc..)
Re:
Thanks for your efforts. I tried both, but I could not free anything, maybe that volatile folder might also be emptied by oxios hibernate?!?
Pocket Mechanic seems quite similar to SKTools, actually there were many programs I could not move, du I even did not information wheather they are on main or external storage (like tomtom). I guess its theses kind of programm who also do not ask you wheather you want to install on external or main memory ;-(

My XDA2 now has a Sandisk 512MB card.
I also have Journal Bar, SPB pocket plus, Lextionary, Pocket Atlas, Pocket Stars, Currency Convertor X, a few games, (and a few others which I ran out of memory).
What I want to know is how exactly do I get the programmes to run from the sd card, so that the XDA2 memory isn't used to store them.
I have tried x-backup, and I have tried cutting the files using file explorer to the sd card, but then the programmes do not run from the start menu.
I'm sure it's something simple but please let me in on it!
So near, and yet so far!
well when you install programs using activesync you can choose between
if you want to install it in main mem or storage
some programs dont work though if you install them to the storage
if you dont want to install the programs again you may be able to edit the shortcut and pointing the path to the new location and some programs may also require some regediting for them to work after being moved
if you dont want to edit the shortcuts then you can just make new ones
whats under programs is just which shortcuts that are located in windows\programs
Thanks for the help.. made sure I said no to installing in default directory.. now to see if each programme works.. Thanks for the help!
Similar position
Hi Gumby I'm in a similar position to you in that I just got a 512Mb SD today and I intend to rebuils my system with appropriate applications on the SD. Have you found out yet which work from the SD and which only work from ROM?
It would be halpful for everyone if we could get a list of what should go where.
I noticed that I have 29 MB allocated to storage memory, of which 23 MB is in use. But I cant recall putting anythign in there to begin with!! And I dont see anything in there when I look at it in file explorer.
ANybody know what would be in there? Does the Jam put things in there? Is there a way for me to see what's in there and clean it out.
Could be anything under My Documents, applications, photos or an accidental video or audio note recording. Or applications from the Extended ROM.
As often is the case with the Pocket PC - there is a utility to help - and it's free.

i agree - the Storage folder is a comlpete mystery to me. why do we even need an extended ROM? what msft should do is simple:
1) a user storage area (My Documents) in which there is NO data that is not specifically created by a human (i.e. no application specific files or other machine made folders with obscure names - how often have you looked at something in "My Documents" and thought "what is THAT? and can I delete it?")
2) a device storage area where ALL other files are stored - i.e. Windows files, Program files, etc...
The only exception to 1) should be user settings, playlists, dictionaries etc... but those should be buried, hidden and difficult to access inside one folder in My Documents
Does the stuff in Storage stay where it is after hardreset??
Yes filest that you put in the Storage directory is permanent...and it will be there even after a hard reset.
Regards,
Primoz
Storage is permanent & is used for 'Permanent Save' which you can find under settings/system
Checking the appropiate boxes makes your device sync with this permanent storage after ie. a hard reset.
Works like a charm!
The availablle memory is allocated between storage and programs automatically.

When you hard reset and run the Extended ROM it installs those applications RAM......
I use the Storage to store some DLLs to save space. It works, not for all programs though.
Have tried installing programs to storage before (Journal Bar and Avantgo) but system seemed to be unstable afterwards.
Wonder if anyone has any good experience of storing and running other programs from Storage.
Also, has anyone tried installing the cab files from extended rom to Storage??? Is that possible at all???
RE
Yes, you can use Storage to store your cab files for the EXTROM.
BTW, program cab files for Storage and EXTROM are those that don't upgrade frequently otherwise you'll have to hard reset frequently too
Using Storage or Storage Cards should be avoided for anything on the today screen or anything which is bound to a hardware button. This is because the SD drivers take a little time to initialise when the device powers up and can result in files not being found - which can lead to small or big problems, depending on the nature of the 'missing' file.
This is why Pocket Plus cannot be installed in Storage any more and why Pocket Informant recommends installation into main memory. This is documented both by Spb Software House and WebIS.
I was beta testing SpbWeather and had some of the skins installed to Storage - whenever I used those skins, the plug-in was icon-less on power up, but main memory skins were fine.
As mentioned above, be careful selecting where to install Today Screen plug-ins.
As of the Storage, well I am not sure but I recommed you put in SMALL items in there since the storage becomes unstable at times because to OS may use a little of the Storage space to accomodate memory intensive applications like Adobe Acrobat. Correct me if I am wrong but this is what I understand about it.

Ther is so little storage there, why not just ignore it and use SD memory, or main memory where required?
I use storage to store my wma ringtones... haven't have the guts to move the DLLs yet. with regards to this... if i create a folder named Windows in Storage and move all my DLLs there would I need to hack into the apps individually ang make them look at this folder... or will the OS automatically look at both folders? Some people say to use systempath to do this.

As I know U have to hack the registry files of single appz to point in to storage folder instead in the main memory...

It's 10% of the device's memory, that's not insignificant and certainly not worth wasting. I store 13.2Mb of utilities and etc. in Storage so that it frees up the same amount of Main Memory but permits me to use them when swapping cards. I think it's a waste not to use it.
Into my Storage i have install :
Resco keyboard pro
Laplink controller
Handymenu
Hottbutton plus
Phone today
Today phone pro
VIto voice dialer
Used space for all this 3.21 mb
Free space 4.31 mb
I Don't have any problem at all, my JAM works smoothly & stable plus the today plugins run faster than ever...
Try with no doubt ...
I have plenty of storage memory, but little program memory left. In prior Ce versions you could adjust the two by way of a slidebar.
How can this be dome on WM50?

I'm assuming it changes as required, hopefully! I can have resco explorer, tcpmp, egress and IE all open with no hassle, and still take calls.
As explained several times in this forum, there is no way of doing this I'm WM 5.
The Universal uses two different ICs for sorage and program memory.
So unless you modify your motherboard, and rewrite the OS; it aint gonna happen!
Hello All.
I installed on my Qtek 9090 a ROM WM6 in Spanish, everything works fine but when I see how little storage space is left and plenty of room for programs that I use, I wonder:
How can free up space or distribute the available space for storage and programs.
This is data:
Memory storage:
Total space 60.30MB, In Use 52.55MB, Free 7.5MB
Memory Program:
Total space 109.12MB, In Use 37.45MB, Free 71.67MB
What I want is to have more memory for storage, as I do this?
Or able to balance the memory as is done in WM2003.
Forgive but do not like taking a picture of the device.
Unistall programs that dont need speeds and install on Storage card, that way yu can save lots of memory space.

It's not that easy. Every program I can install in the storage card, I try to do. I also changed my email and attachments to the storage card. Prior to syncing my email, I had 18MB and the PIM file was 11MB. 3/4 of the way through, I have 8MB left and the PIM file is 12MB.
After looking in every directory, I can't seem to find why 10MB of space was used. Further, you can't relocate the PIM file.
In WM2003, you can adjust the program and storage memory. You can't in WM6.
Try this...
Go see the second post here for what I do to keep the storage running with 12MB free and still install mad amounts of software!
Best advice is to read the bit about Pocket Mechanic - it'll help move most (not all) software to the card for you - changing all the reg entries and links for you!
And if it's speed you're after, try Pocket Hack Master from the same company!
But DO remember to backup with something like Spb Clone BEFORE you paly with these tools! Saves any embarrassment later

i think you may need ramdisk
