STONGLY CONSIDERING PURCHASING THE XV6800 FROM VERIZON. I CURRENLY OWN THE SAMSUNG i730 AND REALLY ENJOYED USING IT FOR ALMOST TWO YRS...DID CONSIDER THE i760 BUT AFTER READING MANY REVIEWS THE XV6800 WON HANDS DOWN. I'VE READ THROUGH ALL THE THREADS ON PPCGEEKS, XDA AND PDAPHONE ON THE XV6800 AND WAS WONDERING WHAT HACKS/FLASHES/ROMS ARE A MUST HAVE FOR JUST THE BASIC PHONE/PDA IMPROVEMENT NO BELLS AND WHISTLES JUST IMPROVED FUNCTIONALITY i.e. VOLUME IMPROVEMENT, BT, RING, ALARMS ETC. AFTER I GET THE PHONE WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE AT BASELINE I WILL THEN START TO ADD THE BELLS AND WHISTLES. PDAPHONE WAS VERY HELPFULL AT GETTING MY i730 UP TO SNUFF...I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WOUND HAVE DONE W/O IT.

ROFL!
I'm sorry.. But that was freaking funny...
As for the hacks. I recommend just using the new sprint mogul rom 2.17, install reg edit. Use the reg edits found on this site that increase battery life. And use the edit that kills idle connection.
The rest is optional. I find default aspects of the phone are already good enough for me. (regarding speaker volume, etc).
Use dcd's latest Verizon rom u will be happy..
LOL
Omg..that first reply was a riot!

^^ Whatever comma boy. =)
what are roms and how are they installed? Also i see the vista battery theme but dont undestand how to install it.
To ca3sar,
They are like the basic operating system on a PDA device. The forums are littered with them and many are VERY good. Search & read. Use search words like "unlocker" "rom" "rom utility" "colonels" "custels" "jakdillards"...

Hey all, Just updated my sig to show my current setup. Got myself a used MDA for free. Lil fix me up. Couple scratches, no stylus and so but was a 1.08 version =D So after reading up the guides here. I got to unlocking the cid and mda itself fine. Did the upgrade after I did the secure stuff to try out that XDA Mobile 6 R3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324632
Im wondering which one is better tho... Kinda confused when it comes to that.. just know WM6 is the way to go and least I have the above installed and working. =D
So just learning all I can here. I saw something about Kitchen and I am guessing its like a custom build or so with things I want?
Anyways thought I would say hi and if someone knows a better WM6 I should go after. Ill look at it. Just so much to take in at once atm. Was used to playing with my Zodiac Palm. Heh.
All the chef's here are great, so the rom you want is truly dependant upon what you like. I run NTS's Jaguar 3.1...for me it is fast enough, really stable and comes with only a a small amount of stuff, so that I can customize it the way I like. Some roms have all the bells and whistles, some have pretty much OS only. As for a kitchen...before you attempt to cook your own rom, I would strongly urge you to READ READ READ all the tut's and stickies and wiki, learn as much as you can about your device first before doing any major customizing. Think of it like dating...you want to find out as much as you can about the other person, really get to know the other person and that person's quirks, before committing to a long-term relationship...or you can get sloppy drunk, jump in the sack and wake up the next morning going...what the hell did I just do!!! Your choice.
**edit**
BTW, Welcome to xda!!
Well here is my experiance. I mod and work with Symbian 60 phones as my primary. Write the guides on how to stream live TV or MP3 to the cell phone via winamp or real audio.
I have modded and flash/flexed Motorola phones, have experiance in unlocking Nokia and Motorola GSM phones. Not to mention tweaking.
So I am a sage when it comes to STUDY 1st. Its annoying.. but yea I do it.
(Oh yea, I also am with www.pspupdates.com so I mod PSPs too hehe)
So I studied enough here to least get my MDA sim/cid unlocked for modding. Thats safe. So far I went with that XDA Mobile 6 R3, I am not sure but it seemed stable enough to start with. I have not updated the IPL yet, but I prob will in a few, Rapid share sucks with its delay, no?
Well as for kitchen.. I figure its ALOT of data to take in at once. Abit too much... I understand its a make your own with what you want.. My issue isnt that.. my problem is.. WHAT do it I want??
I mean I have alot of experiance with my Zodiac II palm.. which is another for the homebrew community and tricks for working it... mean getting it to use my cell phone to connect was fun. (Still gotta with the PPC)
So my issue is trying to get to know the PPC OS. I played with it on my old bosses Ipaq 3135? (The T-Mobile PPC that failed)
But I did some interesting things with that too.
I know Ill 100% want VNC, Divx (Is there the web plugin for it yet to use stage6.com or so? What about Youtube REAL version?)
Not to mention easy to do emulators. =p
I just dont know fully what I want or what I SHOULD be after with this thing. I know I need to do some reg hacks to tweak.. but then im stummped.. if I am using custom mod versions... are these tweaks built in?? Would I mess something up? (You get my worries)
Another thing I noticed after I installed this version is VoIP... my wonder is.. I never used that before. I DO know I can flash my Linksys WRT54G with the DD-WRT voip firmware instead of the standard ddwrt build I am using now. Question is... is it worth it? If so, whats the deal? Use Skype?
As you can see alone from the questions above... Its just a scratch of questions and areas I am looking at and trying to get answers on... so yea.. kinda hard to know when to "stop" and say "IM HAPPY" with what I installed lol. Just need to know what I should go after... =/
Hey guys
The latest Haykuro 4.5 rom and his audio/wallpaper zip doesn't include the T-Mobile ringtone, the one used in all the TV ads (in the UK at least)
Could somebody upload it please? It's my favourite ringtone for now and I want it back!
I'm not sure which jingle tmo uses in UK ads...or even American ones, as I don't have a tv. But here's the T-jingle from a US G1. I also included the T-Jingle from a Sidekick 2, as it was always my favorite of them. Hope this is it.
Hmmm I put those files in /system/media/audio/ringtones
Is that the right place?
Though after checking it with the music player that T-Jingle is the right one, thanks mate
Heh that Sidekick one is kick ass btw!
Hey, thanks for the SK2 T-Mobile Jingle! I still miss my SK2 sometimes, especially after "upgrading" from it to the MDA, ehhh that was a piece of junk. At least Android has the potential to best the Danger OS.
Thanks for the nostalgia!
No problem. When I'm not a curmudgeonly bastard, I try to help out.
Where have you been hibernating??
Heh. I'm still here. There isn't as much for me to get active with in the G1 forum...but I can pass out ringtones.
What forum are you "active" in?
Are you staying out off "misunderstandings"
I'm looking at the new 3G Excalibur lol
Ugh, I can't stand this sound!
I used it as an alarm tone when I worked the morning shift at FedEx. I used it b/c it rattled my bones, and that's what you need when you're being forced from bed at 12:30am.

I was fairly active in Excalibur. The Dream forum and it's subforums are about it now. It was easy to give Linux support for WinMo phones, but this forum is full of Linux geeks I lurk.
But I'm perfectly happy with Android. It's such a simple thing that it doesn't need much tweaking and maintenance. I wouldn't go back to registry editing for anything in the world. lol Now, I'd definitely pay full price for a next-gen Android phone when tmo graces us with one. My only want: two sd-cardslots....one for system, one for home.
I am looking at rooting my new G1. But I have a question. What are the benifits of going to a custom rom. Is the batery life better? What exactly do you gain?

Battery life can be better, depending on the ROM and any underclocking/overclocking you may do. The biggest benefit to rooting is the ability to install and run apps that you wouldn't otherwise. For me, that's things like wireless tethering. You can also install your apps to the SD card, allowing you to install as many apps as you'd like (the G1's memory is pretty limited without this ability.)
also, SUPERUSER, a very good thing for customization and running roms, themes, and like Shrivel said, applications. also :
multitouch
sense UI
roms
faster speed (depends on what you use)
etc etc
its cool
It's really no different than anything else, we like to tweak on our phones and make them different. If you are a person that likes to tinker and can accept that some things just might not work 100%, you will love modding. If you are the iPhone type that want something that works all the time and can accept limitations, dont waste your time rooting. It really comes down to what you want and expect out of your phone.

Ok, I am looking for a ROM that gives me the best batery life. The G1 batery is just plain bad. I also what to uninstall the stock messaging app and replace it with the Handcent messaging app. Can I get rid of stock apps on a stock rom or do I have to root.
I am not all that scared of rooting. Upgraded my old dash to a 3VO rom for the threaded texting. Thanks for your help.

Oh totally. that's the BEST part lol
but naw. It's really for the customization and added freedom. New bootloaders, ROMs (which there is a wide variety of them, and they can get very fast) and the ability to tether is a popular reason as well.
I'm glad I rooted mine. For one, it keeps me from getting bored when tinkering with new ROMs and such lol, but it really adds a whole new realm of development and experimentation that you can experience.
FYI, follow steps precisely, lest you risk bricking your phone. The wiki will train you young padawan.
Also, when in doubt, search the forums. Ya never know how great an answer you'll find for most things.

You can remove apps with root, but all you have to do is set up the notification in handcent and turn off all the notifications in the native messaging app. If you pull the messing app off
HTML:
the phone i dont think hancent will work either. It also might make your ROM unstable.
G1 stock battery sucks, if it bothers you that much either underclock or upgrade the battery.
You can delete the stock messaging application and rename the replacement then drop it into the /system/ side of things and have it work fine. But that was before advanced launcher so I didn't bother with that any more.
There is really no risk as long as you follow directions. Start out with emothers rom as it is closest to stock, but allows upgrading to add more advanced features very easily. I hear it's best for newcomers. Then you can experiment with other things like Sense, 2.1, then switch back to a decent 1.6 rom.
You can always go back to the stock t-mobile rom, not root and let the OTA updates hit your phone if you decided to go back.
I have been a user of Windows for long lomg time and have loved it when I had the liberty to flash clean cooked ROMS onto my device. Rarely, I stuck to Stock ROM's or over bloated ones no matter how stable!
Will we ever see the light of day when the streak will get to see some cooked ROM's which are not bloated with added apps?
I got my Streak bout a fortnight ago - so far tested and mostly fixed on downloaded apps - but really pissed as I still have crap on my streak which I do not use - why do we need to live with this?
Am now looking to dump the 2.1 - but sceptical as I nee many bricks flying around for units purchased online direct from Dell....
I really hope to see some cook - take the initiative and start cooking some clean workable ROM's
I am sure it will not be long before you have your wish, Paul over at Modaco is the main Cook at the moment nip over he has a custom ROM

I have no idea what you're talking about. What 'bloated' ROMs?
Why don't you just open the update.zip, remove all the crap you don't need, resign it, done. Or, just uninstall the apps you don't want? It's not exactly hard to do.
You also sound incredibly ungrateful, these devs put A LOT of hard work into these ROMs and you just complain about a few apps they've included? If you don't like it, why don't YOU start making ROMs. This thread is essentially just pure laziness on your part.
Wow. "why do we need to live with this?" It's not essential to life, It's a ROM. grow up.

Chill out Meltus.
Am not sitting here to start another debate on disrespecting Chef's - never had that intention anyway if you had read my post with a clear mind! - I have been a user of custom cooked ROM's since the days of XDA IIs and never had a reply of such.
My title read - 'Moved from windows' - which implied that I am new to Android and still experimenting - infact I am still on my stock ROM on my dell online purchased unit and was only lookign for a way to uninstall Touchdown etc to save on space in memory.
Thanks for the tip on changing update.zip - now I have a solution which I can look into!
I said we dont need to live with this and it was not pointed to any Chef - it was pointed to Dell - who have installed all crap on the unit (which I am trying to remove) and being in a forum - you will have to appreciate - we all have the right to ask questions - some may be good and some naive!
So mine was naive - and thanks for your answers.

Ah, I apologise, I thought you were referring to ROM developers, sorry
Anyway, if you want to open the zip, remove stuff, and then sign it again, you'll need the signing tool - http://androidforums.com/developer-101/8665-how-signing-roms.html
Sorry again, i guess i just completely mis-read your post ><

Haha, i think it's almost impossible to brick the streak at the moment, you can always just fastboot flash the stock recovery image then flash the stock update.pkg from Dell!
I'm a weak f***er so that's out of the question
I too have come from WM and have been using it since it came out in '98. One thing I miss is the ability to view and tweak the registry. Like on the HD2 just change
'Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\ EncodeFormat' to '2147483647' and you have loads of additional video recording formats!
You can also remove ROM apps by using Root Explorer (need rooted phone obviously) and removing the offending /apk files from /system/apps and then clearing the Dalvik-cache and rebooting.
I just flashed the 2.1 ROM on my AT&T/US Streak and got rid of Touchdown and Amazon MP3. No more icons I don't use, nor widgets to scroll through.
here's a good guide to it:

Good luck.

Good to know. I was wondering if it was so easy, why would everyone care about what apps are installed if you can just zap em if you don't want them. Well thankfully I developed no ill effects from my deletions, and I removed those I really didn't want.
I'm not enough of a linux/Android gear head to know better. I'm a pretty good Windows gear head, but never knew Linux well which is too bad with all the cool Androids coming along in the handheld space. Oh well, learning new tricks is good too i suppose...
thanks
Hey guys,
Sorry for this "noob"ish post. I am new to the Fascinate after being with T-Mo for 2 years, which included a G1 (running CyanMod) and a Nexus One (which also ran CyanMod). I am just hoping one of you would mind giving me a quick 2 minute catch up on where things are now with the Fascinate, as there is way too much on these forums to realistically sift through. I have some basic questions...
1)I have noticed root is good and all that. I would assume rooting is all you need to get free wireless tethering? What program do you use to wireless tether once you are rooted?
2)I keep seeing something about "lagfix". What is that? My phone doesn't seem laggy, except for all the bloatware Verizon has put on it. So any info is appreciated.
3)I'm not crazy about the stock 2.1 ROM. Are there any good custom 2.2 ROMs yet? What is generally the best ROM for the Fascinate? On the Nexus, argue as much as you want, CyanMod was far and away the best ROM. But it seems like there is no CyanMod for Fascinates. So what are my best choices?
4)Is there anything else I should know moving to this phone?
I really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer these, as I know these types of threads are not the most popular thing on here. I want to get "in the know" with my new phone, but there is already so much on these forums, it's hard to tell what is still new and relevant and what is not. Thanks guys!

Also a G1 and N1 owner. Be happy to help.
1) Wireless tethering is accomplished by myself without issue via Wireless tether app on the market. It's under the radar so to speak, but required an ad hoc connection
2) The correct lagfix is the voodoo lag fix, with the informative posts being found on the first page of this forum. Basically, Samsung used an older file system in their build, and voodoo updates it to ext4, which is alot snappier on the r/w side of things. Without it, you will encounter a slowing of your processes after a period of uptime, and usually a small freeze while the phone does things like install applications. The flip is that voodoo instructions should be read very closely, and adhered to. Failure to do so will result in phone borkage, and while always fixable, takes some time and patience to do so.
If you are unfamiliar with Odin, as I was at first, make damn sure you always use the PDA option. Failure to do so can result in terminal frustration, and possibly a close to true brick of the device.
3) There are no 2.2 ROMs yet. The Froyo OTA should hit between now and Christmas hopefully. I would like to think we will see some custom 2.2 ROMs, and maybe a CM port by the 1st. In the meanwhile there are several ROMs on this board which seem to work for the people who use them. I'm a proponent of stripping and customizing stock to suit your needs, making your ROM your own. I haven't seen enough included hacks in the available ROMs to warrant a need for them personally. We have some excellent kernels available, and some pretty slick themes and mods, which works well for me.
4) The phone has the best processor/gpu out currently. The display is fantastic, and I don't see a better device on the market currently. It does have downsides, most notably the GPS, which isn't a huge issue for me, but which also has a fix on the way, presumably to be included in the 2.2 update. I also have experienced a shortage in the Wifi reception comparative to my N1, having approx. half the range I previously enjoyed. This seems to me to be software related, so I assume it will be addressable.
If you plan to root and mod, especially if you plan to use voodoo, which I highly recommend, be careful in your reading of instructions and applications of procedures outlined in them. As great as this phone is, mistakes are costly in terms of confusion and time to correct.
Thanks for the reply. Im always impatient, and as such, have already rooted before even waiting for a first response I used the one click method though and it worked great, exactly as advertised. Root Explorer works, so I definitely am good there, and I snagged the latest build of wireless tether from the developer's page.
Now I need to get started with actually switching out the ROM. I really want all the VZ bloatware gone and Bing needs to go as well. So now I guess I have some reading to do on installing ROMs for this phone. Process seems a little more complex for this phone that it was for my N1, but that may be just because it was so long ago and I don't remember. Thanks for the response though!
I am in a similar boat I use the Droid 1 and my fascinate is at the post office waiting for me per usps tracking
I think for now I will root remove bloatware and Bing and role with that till 2.2 maybe touchwiz aswell as I hear u can save ram that way and I paid for launcher pro so might aswell use it.
Yea, from what I've read, it sounds like putting a new ROM on is kind of pointless, since it won't be 2.2 anyway. So I think I just need some good instructions for this voodoo/lagfix stuff and some good instructions for removing all the vzn bloatware that comes installed. Once I do those two things, I think I'll be good. I am already running ADW, which I love, so I don't need any customization there, and wireless tether seems great. So I guess I just need to continue searching. There are lots of topics on the voodoo/lagfix thing on here, but I just want to make sure I find the most complete comprehensive set so I dont screw anything up
I'm somewhat of a new member, but have silently read through these forums for months... I used Dirks d02 sv1200kernal and the voodoo lag fix, I have been very happy with my phone since. I have been reading about the roms right now and don't see a point just yet. Freeze the bloatware from verizon and you will love your phone. Also have switched to LPPlus and think my phone operates so smooth!
I just received my fascinate friday, best buy sucked me in, lol, and I have no regrets. This phone is amazing, better than my d1 and d2. I too had a lot of the same questions about the lagfix and what not and would just like to say thanks, this thread def helped me understand. Can't wait until 2.2 roms

What is LPPlus? Is it worthwhile/simple to do?
To everyone else, I am glad I was not the only other one on the fence. XDA can be a bit scary sometimes, because you don't wanna ask something dumb/"noob"ish, but at the same time, if you haven't been there since the beginning, playing catch up can be hard. I will say everyone in the Fascinate threads has been nice and really helpful so far. I am slowly working through getting my phone the way I want it. Its just a shame that Verizon has to mess up the phone with all this garbage. I dont care much for the iPhone (design or software), but the one thing they do right, which comes at the cost of being "closed", is that they can dictate the user experience right out of the box. Unfortunately a lot of people are just too timid or incapable of doing the things we do to our phones to get them "right". Its a shame too, because people base their opinions on what Android the phone company gives you rather than what it can truly be. Regardless, I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to being a part of this community. I work IT at a school, so I know my way around a PC, but I wish I just knew more about Android coding and how phones work to be a true contributor to ROMs, etc. At least I know I helped a few people by speaking up and creating this thread. Thanks again everyone!!!
Edit: Im putting this in as an edit, but I just realized that LPPlus is probably Launcher Pro Plus. Have you used ADW? Is there a difference? What do you see as its advantages over ADW?
I personally (and i think most of us here would agree) don't have a problem with anyone asking "dumb" questions, if they haven't already been answered. the main issue is that most of the new posts are either "I didn't read the instructions and F*ed up my phone", "hey i heard this crazy rumor it must be true", "Can someone explain the same thing there are already 6 other topics about" and "how can we take X from this other phone and use it on mine". your questions are understandable and asking questions before you jump in saves a lot of headaches from having to fix something you tried without understanding it. and honestly, no need to be afraid to ask anything, worst case scenario someone like me *****es at you over the internet. who cares. =)
