Every time i connect my wizard to my machine using the USB cable, i get the following message in baloon.
"One of the USB Devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it."
It appears as "Unknonw Device" on windows device manager.
This started happening when i changed my ROM to AMP.v2.Vanilla. Prior to that my wizard was connecting fine. I have been trying to resolve this for days now but no luck.
Following are the things i have tried.
1. Un-installed Activesync & re-installed.
2. Soft & Hard Reset the device.
3. Tried going in bootloader so that i can install my preivous rom, but the machine still doesnt recognize the device and gives the same message as mentioned above.
4. Removed all the USB controllers and re-installed in the machine.
5. Tried on different machines but same results, so its not machine specific.
6. Tried with a new cable to so its not the cable, it has to be the device.
Anyone who can help with this. I am sure i am not the only one having this trouble.
Any kind of help is appreciated. Just need to connect and go back to my preivous rom.
Thanks in advance.
Nick.
Please don't cross post. Pick a flavour and run with it.

My apologies mate. Its just that i am little desperate now to make this thing work.
I am having trouble getting my Wizard to communicate with a computer running Windows XP and ActiveSync 4.5. It's been awhile since I've synced it to an XP machine, as the one I primarily use is Vista, and it seems to work fine. When I plug it in it either sees it as an internet connection, or if I disable the advanced connection settings on my device it seems to install it correctly, but then it doesn't open up ActiveSync.
I'm running a custom WM6 rom that I installed about a year ago, and was looking to upgrade, which I hear XP is the most reliable for. Any idea what the problem could be? I also don't seem to be able to open Activesync by itself when the device is not installed, could it be a problem with the program itself on my XP machine?
yes
It must be the problem on the xp machine unisntall the activesync reset your pc... reinstall it and then i suggest you... if you will upgrade make a hardreset before plug your device to sync.
Well, that got ActiveSync working again on the PC, the icon showed up on the bar and I was able to open the program. But as soon as I plugged in my device, the program closed again, and now it won't open. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling again, but I got the same result. Any other suggestions?
Hello,
recently I bought an i5800 (android 2.1-update 1), because I wanted to have rooted phone, I read informations about this on couple sites.
I decided to use z4root.
Now when I connecting my phon to the PC kies shows only Phone+Contacts.
Doesent show any data on the SD, and also doesn't show any informations about version of firmware...
How can I fix this?
Best Regards
v
PS: I also installed Link2SD, AppsToSD and Titanium Backup
update to latest version of kies and also un-install the USB drivers from device manager -> disconnect phone and connect it to other USB port open kies and the driver should install again hope this can fix your problem
Nope, that doesn't work either
Kies updated to 2.0.0.11032_12...
On the phone USB Debug mode disabled, USB Options-> ~Ask after connection.
Kies still does not sees properly the phone, and phone does not shows the window with options Kies,~media player, ~mass storage.....
I had exactly the same (infuriating) problem.
I fixed mine by uninstalling Kies, uninstalling the USB drivers then installing java (I know this shouldn't make a difference, but it seemed to).
I was using Windows 7 64 bit.
I found the Samsung_USB_drivers_for_mobile_phones.exe file & saved this to my desktop (before uninstalling).
I think Kies saves it to program files x86/samsung/kies/usb drivers/
Then after uninstall of everything, then installing java,
right click on the driver and run as an administrator.
When it asks where to install it, place it in the /program files/samsung/kies/usb drivers/ folder (not the x86 version, install it to the normal one).
Then find the Kies install file and right click that & install as an administrator to, but let Kies install this to the x86 program files location (default).
Then when it's completely installed (skip finding media, you can do that later), turn off the phone, then connect it to the USB cable.
Then turn the phone ON and let the drivers install as normal.
Just let it do it's thing and after a while, after all installations are complete, Kies will show your phone & will let you see all the folders, not just the contacts list & will show you the firmware version and everything.
Hope this helps.
I made sure I 'ran as administrator' on both install files.
Not sure which bit helped, but it worked for me (and I've tried everything, believe me)
*EDIT*
google "Why does Samsung Kies not detect my Samsung mobile phone" for the same info
**EDIT** x2
on looking in my /progam files x86/samsung/kis/usb drivers folder, it sems that Kies has reapplied the driver there & removed it from the 64 bit program files path. Ether way, one of the above steps fixed it, perhaps it's just that I ran everything ad an admin, who knows ?
Installation of java wouldn't make any difference, unless the installer was java based. The admin rights might have done the trick.
Sent from my GT-I5801 using XDA App
Actually, ignore my last post.
Kies now cannot see my Galaxy Apollo anymore, (even though every other program on my PC can !! including WMP12 !!)
I'm sick of this.
What's so hard about detecting a connected device ? !!
Sorry for the rant, but I'm getting really annoyed by this piece of software (Grrr !)
Yeah, I do whay you write, it's the same on my pc... now everything is .. not working
I think it's not only a Kies problem+USB drivers but also system on the phon has been changed thats why my phone is not properly working with kies.
Of course, still when I trying to connect my phone to pc I don't see on my phone screen options window that was before z4root/app2sd/link2sd - I mean Kies, media, storage
I see that there is a problem with a part of the Kies - DeviceManager is crashing after phone connecting..
Well now, the only way I can connect, is by (control panel) > uninstall programs > uninstall SAMSUNG USB drivers.
(while the phone is NOT connected).
Then launch Kies.
Then select the menu (tools > install driver)
Then wait while it installs the drivers (again !!)
After waiting for about a minute, I reconnect my GT-I5800 to my PC via the (not so universal) USB cable.
I then wait till all the (your device has been installed) messages stop.
Then I have normal Kies control of my Apollo.
But, if I disconnect it, then try to reconnect it, I get no joy.
It will sit at "connecting" forever.
The only way I can reconnect, is to rinse & repeat.
(I.E. uninstall the drivers & 'GOTO 10', which is really starting to boil my p!ss as I have no idea why this is happening).
Every single piece of poo software on my PC can see my phone, except Kies.
Does anyone have any ideas as it'd driving me mad !! :`(
try this
uninstall kies and all samsung drivers from ur pc
goto download mode (does not need root & it's safe)-(do not open odin)
a list of 3-5 drivers will get installed
then unplug the device, remove and re-insert the battery
install kies then connect ur phone by the usual way
I have the same problem with my phone. An other i5800 can connect successfully with my laptop, KIES and the same cable, but my phone doesn't.
It works...
what I've done....
Back to factory settings in the phone... so just great, the best corrective actions that I ever had :/
I want my HTC Uni back...
*edit*
Kies works 100% ok eaven now sees the update to froyo
so problem was changes that was made by one of the additional software on the phone
Thread can b closed
I also had this problem from long time. I found the reason was the Kies (both 1.5xx and 2.XX) versions are unable to use the default USB driver thats come along with Windows OS.
So the best solution is uninstall the USB driver from Windows device manager and after that install the USB driver from Kies. Then definitely your phone will be recoginized with Kies.
Note: After Uninstalling USB driver and before installing the USB driver from Kies sometimes windows itself tries to install the default USB driver so disable it when its promted.
Hope this helps....

Install latest kies (clean install). Before connecting the phone to usb remove the SD card and start in kies. The phone would be detected and drivers would be installed. Disconnect, reinsert SD card and connect again. Problem will be solved. Worked for me.
I've got an HTC HD2. Want to do a NAND install of Android Gingerbread.
First things first....I've installed HSPL...2.08. No problem.
Next, trying to install custom radio. Keep getting error 266. Does anyone have a fix for this? Bootloader shows a USB connection at the bottom of the screen...so it must be communicating with the computer.
Been working on this for three weeks. About to give up. Any help is MOST appreciated.
Make sure to run as admin and disable any anti-virus
I've done both...running as admin and no antivirus. Ugh. Very frustrating.
Try another computer
I've tried two different computers. Both running Windows 7. Maybe I would have better luck using XP.
What is the radio version? Make sure you are flashing the right radio if not you could brick the device
It's 2.15.50.14.
make sure the computer detects the phone properly under Device Manager - see if there are any exclamation marks.
if there aren't any, you could also give the MicroSD method a try; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
p.s. if the phone is still on WM, try WMDC on Windows 7 to get the computer to detect the phone first.

Please uncheck USB connection at the ActiveSync connection setting.
Go to services and see if windows mobile connectivity services are started or not. If not Enable them and try again
Hi,
EDIT * I have found a solution in that I can connect via WI fi so that's pretty good but if anyone can help me with the USB issue, it would still be appreciated. It seems that the Wi Fi connection is more limited as I am unable to view things in explorer *
hoping to get some help using my USB to connect to my PC. I've installed Kies but when I try to connect to my PC it just keeps on trying to connect but never actually does it.
I have looked for guidance on this but keep coming across the instructions to go into 'about phone > USB settings' etc etc. However, I do not have a USB settings in about phone. In fact, there is nothing at all about USB in About Phone. I do have a 'USB Utilities' in Wireless and Networks but all that gives me the option to do is 'Connect Storage to PC'. I have a memory card in my phone.
When I do connect to the USB cable, with Kies open, when windows 'finds new hardware' it keeps saying a problem occurred during installation.
Please can anyone help me out? All I want to do is basically drag and drop some files from my PC to my phone. Thanks very much for your help.
Settings --> Applications -- Development --> USB debugging.
Thanks for that!
It got me a little further. I also unmounted then remounted the SD card. However, when I try to connect via kies I now get the message:
Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to re click the USB settings on the phone before connecting to Kies now that it's installed the hardware on my PC?

Turn off USB-Debugging
Don't connect phone yet
Open Kies
Open the Tools menu -> Troubleshoot connection error
Go through the guide and let it reinstall the drivers.
Connect you phone, and let it connect
The default setting has the USB debugging tick greyed out. When I select it, it asks me if I want to allow debugging.
Do you mean that I shouldn't allow debugging and then connect (after reinstalling Kies) or should I allow it and connect? Sorry for my noobishness, Android is all completely new to me.
You should untick the USB-debugging - Then reinstall drivers NOT entire Kies
OK, it's unticked and I'm reinstalling the drivers via troubleshooting.
Do I need to unmount then remount the SD card before connecting my phone? Thanks for your help btw.
Shouldn't make a difference
Bah, I still have the same problem. It just says that there was a problem installing the hardware when I plugged in the phone.
After reinstalling the drivers, i shut down Kies then reopened it. I then plugged in the USB and then plugged the USB into my phone.
When I first installed Kies yesterday, Microsoft Active Sync kept on trying to activate and ask for a CD. It kept on holding up Kies. In the end I uninstalled Active Sync. Also, I still have Samsung PC Studio on my PC from when I had a Samsung a few years ago. It was one of those old slider phones, not a smart phone. Could that be part of the problem? I was hoping to keep it because it's proved to have the best media player I've ever had.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
Try without restarting Kies.
What part of the drivers aren't installed? (Check device manager)
In Device Manager, under Portable Devices there's something called Android MTP that has an exclamation mark next to it. It says it's not configured correctly and that 'No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device'. I'll reinstall the Kies drivers now.
Thanks for this help mljjlm
P.S. Now that I've unplugged the phone, the MTP thing isn't showing in the device manager list anymore.

Of course, it's a part of the phone, and it should not be plugged in because they would have to force a reboot when reinstalling drivers (which might sort your problem btw)
Reinstalled the Kies Drivers and then plugged in my phone but got the same problem. It says a problem occurred. Same device now has a problem in device manager. Maybe I should just uninstall everything and restart? Should I uninstall the old PC studio too?
Just try the reboot without uninstalling anything and then plug the phone in when your pc has booted
Argh! Still didn't work! I think there must be a problem with my PC, well, I'll try doing full uninstalls and reinstall it all. I have to go now as well so I'll have to try again tomorrow.
Thanks very much for your patience mljjlm. It has been greatly appreciated
Are you trying to just transfer files back and forth? If so... forget using Kies.
(I don't have a micro-USB cable with me currently, so this is all from memory)
Just remove the drivers from your device manager so it's like your machine has never seen your phone before. Then on your phone enable usb-debugging.
When you then plug in your phone, you should get a usb icon up top on your phone's display... pull the window-shade down and click on the USB connection button. You should get a fullscreen window on your phone that says something like USB Connection with the friendly android waiving.
Now your PC should see your phone as a standard USB mass storage device.
try plugging the usb cable in another usb port on your computer and than try again.

You're using Kies, that's what you're doing wrong. You said in your very first post you wanted to be able to drag and drop some files from your PC to your phone, so use USB debugging (say yes when it asks you) and Windows Explorer.
If you are using a custom rom like Checkrom Revolution you will need to install the kies support from kitchen pro.
Also are you using the cable that came with your phone?
I have found a few microUSB cables that will allow charge and wont allow data transfer like the new ones for nokia devices and some blackberrys.
It worked! The USB debugging thing!
Thanks to everyone who helped me out. The forum said I was limited to 5 thanks per day so if you didn't get one of the thanks I apologise. Thanks very much!
