I recently left my Cingular 8125 in Bootloader mode over night, connected to my PC not knowing that it couldn't charge while in that mode. I woke up, and couldn't turn it on; I eventually found out that the battery couldn't charge while in Bootloader mode.
The only solutions that I've seen posted are to: (A) Get another charged battery, (B) Charge your battery in a working Wizard
Both solutions aren't possible for me at the moment... what I needed to know is if there is a way to charge using some funky wiring rig using standard AA batteries to power it for about 7-10min. or so.
Cut one end off an old usb cable. Then plug the usb cable into your computers usb port and touch the black wire to the (-) on the batt and the red wire to the (+) on the battery. It takes a few minutes, but the battery will charge. Then put the battery back in the phone and boot into the os. Then charge the phone as usual.

You can jump some wires to your battery from a battery charger to get some power to your battery --- need 5.7 volts -- positive to positve, negative to negative but I would not recommend doing this. Your battery is a lithium Ion which takes a special charge. Take it to a Cingular Store and ask the clerk if they could just charge it up in another phone for a couple of hours. I'm sure they won't mind.
Lithium Ion batteries are fussy about how they are charged, so its best to do it in another phone or a charger made for your battery.

EDIT: I stripped the USB cable, the outer wire is silver and there is quite a bit of it... there are four wires encased in the middle: one black, one brown, one red, one orange... I do not know which wires to connect to the pads on the battery.

i have tried another battery and another rom with no change.
wehn i plug in the sync cord, the izard reognizes that it is on external power but just won't charge the battery.

...try to find out, by measuring, if the ±5Volt DC is present on the pins on the inside of the ppc which is needed to charge the battery. Probably your charging circuit is busted and the ppc should brought back for repairs...

What you speak of, I had the same problem on my wizard.
My battery finally died and I couldnt re-vive my phone.
I bought a new battery off of ebay, put it in, plugged it into the charger that came with my phone, let it charge overnight and I havent had a charging problem yet.
My advice, as well as alot of others on this board, dont use any other charger other than the one that the phone came with. I know I wont be.
...inside your ppc,when you remove your battery, you'll see different connection pins which are normally connected to the battery. With power attached (and without battery) you measure between 2 pins at a time. WATCH OUT for shortcircuiting, be careful!!!. You can use an analog or digital voltagemeter. I don't know which pins, so you have to try it yourself.
You should measure ±5 Volt DC which's delivered by your adapter. If there's no power then your charging circuit is defect and you'll have to let it repair...

I had the same problem twice with 2 different batteries. it seems if the batterie dies completely, the device can not recharge itself. something like a car, you need to have enough juice to start the car so you can recharge the battery.
I took 2 paper clips that i used to connect the charger directly to the battery( bypassing the phone). you need to be careful with that, make sure you connect the right battery pins. I left my battery like this for 15min, just enough to have aniough power to start the phone and continue the charging process regularly.
As mlarif said the battery can fail to charge if totally discharged. So if you are not absolutely certain your circuit is faulty there are at least two threads here describing how to butcher a usb cable to jump start the battery.
Sorry I can't remember the colours of the wires off the top of my head. But a search may find the relavent posts.
...you can also use a 9 VDC battery to give the ppc batteries a boost for a few seconds. But indeed be sure to use the right pins
(btw did you measure any VDC on the batteries..?)
Simple questions to the long story I wrote below the line(didn't realize it was so long):
I have two batteries that get a red light when trying to charge and they will not charge. I'm using a travel charger that came with the phone (used, not sure if it is the original charger). Input is 110-220V 50-60Hz Output is 5.5V 500mA. Says model T-HT-8125-SH on it.
Based on my findings, the phone should charge with 1.0A so it makes me think this is not an original charger. Old posts stated if the battery was this empty you need an original charger since it is the only thing strong enough.
The second question regards a new battery (just bought - one of the two above) dropping from having about 50% to having 0%. This is described in the story below, but could switching batteries / putting in a dead battery anything like this cause the new battery to lose it's charge all of the sudden? Or could there be damage to the phone other than the battery causing this issue?
Anyone have experience with this? What specs on a charger am I looking for that match the original charger? I may find other mini USB chargers around and if I have one that matches I can try it. I just don't want to damage the phone.

I have a wizard I bought used a couple months ago. It worked fine until a water damage issue occurred. I let it dry out for a week and then it was back to working fine. The only thing I noticed afterwards was sometimes the battery would drop from about 75% to 25% really quickly when it did not used to.
Last weekend, it was charging overnight and in the morning it would not turn on at all. I tried taking the battery out and trying to charge it again without success. The orange light usually does not come on. I either get no light, or a red light. Sometimes the red light stays, sometimes it blinks, but usually it is red when I first plug it in for a couple seconds then goes away.
I read recently in the manual that red means it is in LDO charging mode, thus the battery is empty. I thought the battery was dead so I ordered a replacement. It arrived, I stuck it in, it worked.
Now the weird part - I let it charge some on the new battery (it was around 18% when I got it). Then I decided to test the old battery and make sure that was indeed the problem. The phone wouldn't turn on or charge. However, I put the new battery back in and there is no charge. I tried charging it and the light was orange as it should be. However, after a couple more battery switches (I found out about the red light / orange light from the manual at this point so I went to test that with the old), the new battery is acting like the old battery. Both get a red light and will not charge.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the details. I suppose mine isn't an original charger as it only has half the power yours does (and is a different model). It is probably some generic third-party charger.
For anyone interested, I did manage to get the phone charging by jump starting the battery with a 9 volt battery (saw an old post about it). Just connect the positive terminal of 9V to positive end of battery, and negative end of 9V to negative on battery. I used the metal from the inside of twist ties to connect the two batteries. Hold for about 15 seconds, then see if it will charge. If not, take battery out of phone again and use the 9V for another 15 seconds..See if it will charge afterwards. It only took a couple tries before it had enough power to start charging with my charger. Just don't hold it too long as the 9V is nearly twice what you need.
Anyways - it's charging now and is at 80%. We will see if it works like it should afterwards. If so, then I will have two working batteries for the phone.
Note - this shouldn't be an issue with an original charger that is 1.0A. It seems the third party ones are less (500mA, or my car charger is 650mA). I imagine the original charger is strong enough to get it started even on a completely empty battery. If not, the 9V battery sure is.
Just an update - not sure what is going on. It finished charging and the light turned green. As soon as I unplugged the wall charger, it dropped down to 51%. Ok...so that was weird...maybe it wasn't really charged. So, I let it charge up to 100% again. Light turns green. Unplugged it, dropped immediately to 39%.
Anyone have any idea why it would lose a large amount of charge when I unplug the cable? I'm charging it for the third time now...I'm not sure what is going on.
This is all with one battery (the old one). I haven't done anything with the new battery yet to try and get it to charge, but this might explain how the new battery lost the charge it did have and became empty like the original battery - perhaps it lost it's charge when I unplugged it just as the old one is doing...in which case this seems like a phone problem...hopefully not though.
Hi everyone. I've made the error of letting my Wizard get to 0% battery charge... so, when I tried to charge it up, no deal. I read around why, and I understood how this phone charges the battery: ok, no big deal. I followed a couple of posts here, on how to revive the Wizard. I used a 9V battery to let it boot... and it booted! But the battery never kept charge... well, I dunno: the battery status screen showed some percentages, but to be honest it never kept charge, or I had already fried the phone, thus the battery didn't get any charge/the phone couldn't start.
Then I got smarter, I read that a spare battery and the original wall charger would've been better... I took another battery, I attached its 1A wall charger... red blinking led, which sometimes stops blinking.
I fried the mainboard, didn't I ? I'm starting to think that 9V is a lil bit too much.
UPDATE EDIT: Well, I've done some electronic necromancy... the two batteries I had won't charge. I've managed to piggy back them with a power supply, they can boot the phone. Whee. Then I plug in the original wall charger, and... after 5-10 minutes, bang, power goes down. How much voltage do those batteries output after this little trick? 0.00, 0.01. Well, I just bought a new battery... but I still fear I might have fried something. I'm gonna charge one of those old batteries with the power supply and see what happens.
How to Recharge battery. When battery goto 0%
try this.. mine worked. Take a USB Cable cut the small end of the usb cable
not the side that goes to the computer. Strip the wire . all you need is the
red and the black wire. the rest fold it or cut it short. First : take the battery out of the phone. SECOND: Plug the usb to the computer ** becareful don't let the open wire touch each other it will shut your computer down or burn your usb port. THIRD ut the red wire to the + (positive ) and the black wire to the - (negative) on the battery for 1-3 minute. then put the battery back in the phone, turn it on , then plug your charger quickly. Hope this help you..

The battery kept charge for like 10 minutes... then, bam, it's dead. It won't charge with the wall charger, it won't with the usb charger, nothing at all. I hope I just overloaded it and broke when I clumsly tried to reboot my phone, which I'll discover as soon as my new battery will get here from HK
that mean you have a bad battery. MADE IN CHINA. doesn't live up to it name.
the battery from there loose it charge quick. Remember they run 220 and we run 110. Just get a good battery from USA.
Batteries do wear out, and it shows when they wont hold their charge...
Before you conclude your phone is damaged, buy and try a new battery. ;-)

Since I didn't want to spend too much on a phone I consider bricked, I bought a 3$ battery from HK.
New, supposedly working... the red led is watching me.
Another detail: the power button does not work. In the rare cases where the phone booted, pushing it to go in stand by didn't work.
I'm more and more convinced that I fried something.

shortly-i have this phone with no orig. usb cable and with no wall charger. it was friend of mine phone actualy. given to me with dead battery (i am not sure but i have trouwn it away long time ago)
first I did was to wait until friends of mine from china had sent to me 2 batteries compitable with the phone. what i discovered is that a normal ordinar usb cable cant charge the phone's battery it only can connect to the pc.
second what i did is this: i found my old charger from a very old panasonic cell phone and had a try to make the charging process with the simply contacting corresponding pinouts of the battery to the +&- of this same charger (somehow i dissasembled the plug of that charger and it became more "comfortable" to get in touch to the pinouts of the specific cingular's battery)
that unordinar way i did discovered that i can charge these batteries even not sure how much appropriate that other brand wall charger is. It seems its pretty much the same as a power characteristics.
Meanwhile (as i dont use this phone) i had some free time to search the net and to have better idea about that strange unordinar power charging matter with that model of a phone. The situation is that i cant find a place nearby me to buy a cheap usb and wall charger and become using this nice device finaly.
And also i dont want to buy these cable things before clearly understand why this happens ..
I did try also to charge this phone with a HTC brand wall charger but no sucsess again cause it seems this wall charger is for other htc phone (even same mini usb plug and same characteristics)
What i need is to have answers by someone very informed about that matter and let me know what exactly is the specific power charging matter (need explanations i mean) with this phone. If sharing some good ideas about how to remake others usb cable or wall charger for geting it work along for me in such a case , i will appreciate this very much

I don't know if anyone else has had trouble doing what I have done, but I've got the Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard 100), which is also known as the HTC 8125.
1. I bought a car charger at a convenience store for $6 that had the mini-USB plug. It worked like a charm. Never any problem there.
2. I also bought a standard USB to mini-USB cable from the local computer store, because I had lost mine, and it also worked fine for both synchronization and for charging.
3. I bought a second wall charger, buying a standard mini-USB wall charger sold pretty much everywhere cellular phone chargers are sold. It's a common charging port, and this generic worked for me as well.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had problems with these types of devices not properly charging the unit.
Even my USB cable for my portable USB hard drive will power my unit.
EDIT: About your problem with it not charging. I had that problem about a year ago, when my battery got extremely old. It wouldn't charge even with the original charger. I just needed a new battery. The batteries get old and stop taking a charge after a certain amount of use. How long this takes depends on how heavily the batteries are used. They, like car batteries, do not last forever.
I had this problem when I had my wiz too. The battery died and drained, and my phone refused to charge it. I took it to an AT&T service center, and they had no clue what the problem was, and they wanted to issue me a replacement (it was a G4, I had a G3, I wasn't about to fiddle with that at the time.) So I asked to borrow a demo device they had there to fix it. I charged my battery on their demo device no problem, got it up to 3%, and finished charging it through my USB cable in the car socket.
It appears to be a sort of one-in-every-few-or-so type condition, but I got hit with it.
seems like noone can tell me if something special inside the mini-USB plug.

guys, from up there, say that nothing special about the charging cables, but i trust what i see not what i read.
Perhaps there is a problem with your USB port on the device? USB charging has standards, and all devices that need power from a USB port have the same power pin configuration. Otherwise, they can't call it a USB connection. It would have to be called a proprietary connection, and they would have to change the plug size/dimensions and pins.
If there isn't a problem with your battery (which is the most likely source of your problem), then it may be a loose connection on your USB connector. This happens with a number of devices.
If a sync cable connects to the PC but will not charge the battery, then you definitely have an unusual pin detachment of some sort, or a bad battery.

Hi - Too bad for the OP that asked questions but did not listen to this brilliant post.
I have confirmed that a variation of this method works perfectly! I have an old Cingular 8125 that I have been trying to charge for over a year using various USB chargers and NONE would charge the device.
The reason that this may happen is that the original charger has an output of 1 full amp which is much higher than most chargers. The voltage is the same but you need a charger that can handle such a strong current draw.
Nearly all USB chargers can only handle around 250milliamps - 500milliamps which is about half the power needed to breathe life into a fully discharged battery.
The best solution is to NEVER let the battery fully discharge.
Here are the details of what I did:
1. Find the best match charger of 5-6 DC Volts and ability to put out as close to one amp (1000mA) as possible. I chose an old Sanyo SCP-07ADT that is rated at DC 5.4V at 800mA. The plug can be any type, no need to be USB.
2. Cut the connector off the end of the cable and strip the outer black part up about an inch and then strip the positive and negative (red / black respectively) wires up about a millimeter, just enough to have bare metal ends to touch to a small area.
3. Take your battery out of the phone, look at the back of battery for the + and - marks which correlate to one of the metal connection points on your battery, this is where you will "touch" or "attach" the bare ends of the wires.
4. Plug the charger in making sure not to short your bare leads. Before you do this double check that the OUTPUT of your charger is indeed DC voltage so that you don't hurt yourself. You do not want AC output and it can be dangerous.
Then touch the bare end of the red wire to positive of battery, and black wire to negative terminal of your battery. I held them with my fingers while surfing the web for about five or ten minutes. I had no idea if anything was happening or not but it "felt" like the battery might have gotten just a bit warmer.
5. Unplug the home-made bare wire charger and put battery in your phone. Quickly attach a USB charger or just plug into a USB cable of your computer. I pushed it in and nothing happened at first but finally I heard the standard "bleep" when you plug a USB device in. I knew that I made progress because it never beeped before it took about 30 seconds and several "bleeps" of connecting/disconnecting from USB but eventually the charge light stayed on!
It's been about 30 minutes and I'm up to about 50% charge and been using the phone heavily while charging.
So, in summary... never let your battery discharge below 5% or you can only charge it with an OEM cable rated at 1amp (rare). IF you let it discharge to "dead" then charge for 5-10 minutes with the "wire" method and then charge normally!

Wizard that won't charge
When my Wizard/HTC 8125 goes dead my cure for the battery is to use a 9 volt charger with the wires stripped back also. But, my method is a bit different. I place a standard Christmas Tree light bulb (the newer small ones)in series with the charger wires. Observe the correct polarity. The battery is labeled + and - so that part is easy. By using the small light bulb you are doing 2 things. 1.You can see the slight glow from the bulb and know that proper connection is made. 2. You are limiting the charging current to the battery.
If you get really creative like I did you can solder a couple of small nails or in my case a set of red and black probes to the setup and the points on these nails/probes make for much easier connections. Note.... This method may take a few minutes longer but, is much easier on the battery.
In my experience once the battery is below a certain level NO charger that I plug in will work. I just purchased a used 8125 from eBay and brought it back to life most successfully with this method.
hy there my htc wizard battery whos dead so i charched with a cable with + and - the phone starts but when i try to connect to a usb or a adaptor it doesnt charge anymore it show me the charge icon on the baterry but it doesnt charge the usb works fine it's sync to my pc but it doesnt charge anymore... what sould i do?

A design flaw, in my opinion. The HTC Wizard cannot recharge via USB unless there is enough power to turn on. The reason is because it requires the OS to charge.
So, what many people already posted are very creative ways to charge your 8125. The easiest and cheapest way, in my opinion, is to use AA batteries.
1) Take two AA batteries and tape together so they are in series. Imagine it like this... [- AA battery #1 +][- AA battery #2 +]
2) Use two wires and tape one to each side of the AA's (one on the + side and another on the other battery's - side since the - of the first battery is connected to the + of the second).
--w-i-r-e--[- AA battery #1 +][- AA battery #2 +]--w-i-r-e--
3) Connect the positive (+) wire to the positive (+) side of the phone. By this I mean the 6 metal pieces that stick out to contact the phone battery. I did it by wrapping the wire around the top most one (or second top most, it's been over a year since I've done this.).
4) Connect the negative (-) wire to the negative (-) side of the phone. Again, bottom most or second bottom most (see #3).
5) Insert phone battery while the wires are still in and connected to the two AAs.
6) Let the power flow for 30 seconds or so and then try turning your phone on. This part is the important part because you cannot use a USB to mini-USB connected to your computer to charge the phone unless the operating system can function. Meaning, it needs to be turned on first.
7) Once the phone is on, plug in the mini-USB part and connect it to a computer. I'd recommend getting at least 5% battery before disconnecting the AAs, seeing as you need to be able to start up your phone long enough for the OS to boot. Once the OS boots, you can fully charge it through a normal USB to mini-USB connection on any computer.

My Photon Q was probably about 30% charge when I last checked with it on. An hour or 2 later it was a little warm and was off. So I went to charge it using the car charger with 500mah charge rate. I came back about an hour later and the phone was really hot and no charging screen so I unplugged it. The green led light is lit when the phone is plugged in.
I tried holding the power button and volume down button, but it won't boot. If I have the usb charging cable plugged in from a PC or charger adapter when pressing those buttons, the green light will flicker off for a fraction of a second.
I then proceeded to dismantling the phone as I suspect a battery issue and the one in this phone is stupidly non-removable. After taking the back cover off, I tested the battery posts and received 0 volts. I still don't know if the battery caused the drain or if there's a short in the phone. I then took off the inside cover that holds the battery in. A few T5 screws later and the battery was removed. I connected the battery to some AA batteries in series to see if I could get a charge. A few hours later I got it up to 3 volts which held for several hours. So I connected it to a few more AA batteries in series to try and raise the voltage. I got it up to 3.67 volts and the battery is listed at 3.7 volts.
A day later and the voltage is still at 3.67 volts so I put the battery in the phone. I went to try and power it on, but nothing. I then connected it to a usb cord and received the slow flashing red led light a couple times before switching to green. The battery started getting warm again connected to the usb charger. After 20 minutes it was approaching hot so I unplugged the USB. The battery read 3.54 volts. 30 minutes later, 0 volts again.
Does anyone know what the actual voltage range is for this phone, as my old Samsung M320 is also 3.7 volts, but when testing the battery I get 4.10 volts? I heard it's pretty specific on minimum voltage. Any ideas for a temporary battery or way to boot the phone before spending $50 on a replacement battery and then find out there's a short in the phone. Is there another key combination to boot the phone, I'm trying to boot it to at least get my pictures and other data off it.

Not the battery, seems to be an electrical short but where
I bought a new battery for the phone which had a 0 volt charge when I received it. I tried putting it in the phone as is to use the phone charger to charge it, but got nothing. So I charged it using 2, then 3 and then 4 AA batteries in series to get it up to 3.7 volts. I then put the battery in the phone and noticed the 2 large chips and the chip centered above them located by the camera get a little hot. I tried with the charger connected and not connected, but same thing. Power button doesn't turn the phone on. Just the green led lit when the USB power cable is attached. So now it seems there must be a short in the phone. Anyone know where I can look to check for a short, blown resistor or something in this phone? Or at least where the rom chip is located so maybe I can turn it into a usb drive to get my data at the least.
And sorry about the double post. I didn't receive any replies in the other section and I really need to get some data off the phone. Seemed the hardware section would be the place to check. Tree fell on the house and pictures before the tree was removed were taken with the phone which of course ironically stopped working right after.
