Cingular 8525 No Sound - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I bought a brand new Cingular 8525 Hermes about 11 months ago and everything was working fine, until two weeks ago. I turned the alarm overnight and the next morning there was no sound coming out of my speaker. When I speak with someone I am able to here through the inner speaker, but when the phone rings there is no sound even with all the volume up. I checked every sound setting but still no sound. Not even the media player has sound. I heard it was a system mulfunction. Is there some type of patch that i need to install in order for the sound to come back. Can someone please help? I would really appreciate it.
Thank You

I just started experiencing the same issue. I've had my 8525 for 4 months. Any ideas?

same thing here.. started when i had schaps 4.01, which also gave me screen problems. but ive tried loads of roms, and they all ocme to teh same problem. i have rington sound from the back, and startup animation sound, but no mp3 sound or notifications and even the front speaker doesnt work.
what roms do you guys have...
and ive found some problems which might help us.. ive ordered some torx screwdrivers so i can open mine up, doesnt matter if it doesnt, ill get a new phone..

Yes, if it's just the white speaker connection it's a relatively easy fix:
see here:

White block connector, top of picture. All you need do is remove rear casing and push connector in:

If it's the rear speaker then that connector is the likely problem. The front speaker needs more dismantling.
PS Remember to line up the camera's macro switch when putting the rear casing back on! Fiddly, but you'll get there in the end.

clean usb port
I had the same problem just a couple days ago. My USB port was making my hermes think it had a headset on. Just clean the USB port good with a alcohol pad and see what happens. If not, then I would get into the phone

Wierd spkr prob with xda2.. plus take apart pics (56k Warn!)

As I've been lurking for a while, I thought I would sign up and ask a question as well as donate something in the way of pics as I noticed other members asking..
My xda2 loses it's speaker function a few minutes after I reset it.. I've done hard and soft resets, flashed another rom (127.181 currently), cleaned and checked speaker connection and it still loses all sound after a couple of mins. I'm sure it must be software problem, but what?? anyone got any ideas? I've read back through a lot of threads here but no joy with what I've tried so far.
These pics are me taking my xda2 apart to clean the contacts and thought I would photo my progress, excuse my camera and PS skills, not that clever, hope they are of some use to members;
There's 6 intial screws to remove after taking off back and battery:

Update: after playing with the xda2 all day, I've realised it loses sound when it goes into standby.. if I soft reset the sound is fine untill it goes into standby, then when I press the power button to wake it, there's no sound again?! Can't understand it as I reflashed with image from o2 site as well. Maybe a registry setting, but I'm not that clued up as to how to look at the registry, let alone know what I'm looking for. I'm running MS pocket pc version 4.20.0 (Build 14053). Thanks
Hi Scratch, i experience this problem before, when i broke my CONNECTORS (21 pin), i also did disassemble my XDA 2 and cleaned the speaker terminals, but to no avail. I think the Connectors has something to do with the speaker sounds. Have you tried using your headphone or headset? had you recently dropped your XDA 2 with the charger connector on it? Maybe there could be some pin desoldered from the motherboard. check it.
Please can anybody post the pictures, how to unscrew O2 XDA Neo or Mini, I-mate jamin, i-mat jam, any one with this shape
Thx u scratch i was open my device, but i really dont know how to change backup battery (Pic9),do you tell me more how to remove backup pin!Thx u
Resistance (Ohms) across working Microphone
Next time somebody has their Himalaya apart, I'd appreciate it if they could take the time to measure the resistance (Ohms) across their working microphone. I'm trying to troubleshoot a broken mic. and I'm not sure if it's the mic. itself or something else.
I was getting by just fine using the "wired" jack, however, I managed to break the jack in two. Since this happened after the mic. quit, I'm more inclined to think its the mic. itself. I've ruled out a software problem and I've taken the phone apart once already to clean the mic. contacts. Does anybody have any ideas?

The Funniest Thing Just Happened

I had my Universal in my back pocket when I sat on the car's seat. I felt it there right away so I got off the car and checked on the Universal, the screen'd gonr white with some colored lines! The phone was fully functional except for the screen.
Today I check the coxial cable but got nothing. Tried to play around just doing things with no luck.
I was hopeless, thought I'd pay loads for the screen. I went nuts and started to smack it on my desk. Guess what happened, it worked again!
I was like shocked and happy to see the screen back on ! I'm gonna check on it now, rotate the screen and so, lets see if it stays alive.
Cheers.
Try it again mate. If it works, we can add it to the wiki
good job!, I know a story like this!
my friend was playing with his Universal while breathing some fresh air out
then suddenly...ooooooooooooooooo
the Universal made its way down from the 2nd floor...
ofcourse after collecting its pieces (SD card, Battery cover, Battery, SIM, Stylus)...
going up and turn it on and its working! but with the same problem (white screen with color lines)....
my friend was pissed off..so he began to hit the desk near the device and the screen re-worked again!
and the device never went to the service until now...
this happened 6 months before!
the only things that left..some scratches and the broken cover!
strong Universal

If you take a look at the Lcd screen on a universal there are connectors around the corners of the screen (probably find a pic on ebay).
My universal had a problem with a blue tint on the screen but with a squeeze near the upper left of the screen i heard a click and the problem went away.
chances are a swift bang may be resitting the connectors. you might want to try squeezing the corners either side of the screen before resulting to more extreme techniques.
Of course you could remove the covers and be sure of getting good connections

Just don't squeeze the corner too hard. I'm now looking for a new screen as I've got the dreaded 'bleeding ink' across the right-hand corner of mine.
Anyone know of a supplier of new screens?
MONGO Smashh!!!...............hmmmm Mongo fix
if it doubt whack the fker i say
p.s the above advice does not extended to women, children or bosses
p.p.s it can have a 50-50 chance of working on cars i find, but louder swearing does help
On an old PDA, I had one of them WiFi SD card thingies.
It was so temperamental and I thought it might have been the contacts or something.
Anyway, I took the WiFi SD apart and put the bare circuit board in the slot, it kinda got stuck, but that also made funny colours come on the screen.

Weird problem with buttons on screen part.

Hi!
I got a weird problem. Seems like the buttons on the screen part have some problems.
When I press some of the button on Universal screen don't work but instead
the up button keep pressed, not phisically but logical.
It's annoyning because I must reset it to back a normal function.
I opened the screen part I checked and made some pression all over the conecctions, without the
back case worked ok, but when I put the back case on the screen the problem returns.
Please any ideas, solutions.
Thanx again, greeting from Chile
I have the same problem. If I rotate the screen around a bit the buttons work fine, but if the screen is on straight the buttons sometimes just keep on going.
I thought it's a faulty cable between the main body and the screen part, but seeing how it works for you maybe it's a connector problem? I bought a new cable and will see if it helps. Mine has a screen color issue too (screens is blueish).

I tried to identify what the problem is, but I didn't find anything. I tried pressing the conecctor to the buttons parts , I cleaned the pins, pulled the flex cable, and nothing ....sometimes it worked and sometimes not. Whatever I will to exchange or replace with another.

Sounds like a cable break too. I think with mine it went wrong when I turned the screen too far. Somehow the rotation was not blocked anymore and I think it got twisted too tight and the wires in the flex cable were damaged. Wiggling the screen would help sometimes, but the problem deteriorated over time.
I finally received the new flex cable I ordered. I paid 44 GBP (66 EUR) for the flex cable to a company in Hong Kong. I think they are raising the prices of these cables, because I thought I saw them for 30 to 40 euro earlier.
Installing this new flex cable indeed got rid of the problem with the buttons and the problem with the blue color of the screen. Both problems rendered the PDA practically useless and now it's working again.
Unfortunately I somehow managed to break the camera. It says "failed to initialize" when I start the camera software I looked it up and people claim it could be caused by dropping the PDA, but I guess completely taking it apart and putting it back together might cause the problem too
To replace the cable I needed to take the PDA completely apart:

:edit: Wow I checked ebay and the only flex cable seller i could find asks $119 for it. They are really becoming more and more expensive or perhaps I just didn't search properly.
:edit2: The store where I bought it still has some for sale for 39GBP

With any luck it's just the keyboard connector that's a bit loose. It's just under the back cover so no major dismantling:

Sorry.
How high was the fall?
I've dropped mine many times on all sorts of surfaces and still kickin... If you saw the condition of my 6 month old 8525 you'd shiver
No help to offer. :|
Do what mike says, mines taken many a tumble and i've had to set the keyboard connector and the front camera back in place twice now.
Just as the thread states....I DROPPED MY HERMES!!!!
Assessing the damage, part of my keyboard popped out slightly. It popped back into place, but while using the phone, if I close the sliding keyboard, my phone will freeze. Or in other words loss of power. If the keyboard is not closed all the way, I can use my phone. If I carefully close the keyboard, I sometimes can use the phone. A small bump will result in loss of power.
I believe I have a loose connection somewhere. I am going to take Mike's suggestion to look at the keyboard connection. Does anyone have any other ideas I should check?
Giving an update. I opened up my Hermes to find the battery connector has broken off. I did more searching on the forums about this very issue. Hopefully resoldering the connections will work. Understand that the board has many layers and a may have damaged the connection internally. Will have to see. Luckily, I have a friend who works on all sorts of digital components for installing and repair. Hopefully this is the ONLY problem and not just one of many!

Funnily enough i did make a post suggesting a problem with the battery connector - but you may know the site was hacked and we lost some posts from Sunday.
Anyway, let's hope it has just broken the surface solder joints and all will be well.

This is all about for one bad call, and I really pissed off....
First smashed it in to a wall (it survives), next one was a 8kg dumbbell on it, after this one it's still running, and finally I really got angry and separate the lcd from main unit.
The LCD is working and it's OK !!! PCB works also, but the USB port is smashed, and some other things inside, of course the housing is smashed up and the flex cable is gone too.
Universal = undead
