Button Problem on Wizard - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

So I came across a tmobile mda (wizard g3) from a buddy of mine. He was having a couple problems so he bought a new blackberry curve. He was having a couple issues with it so i decided to take it and play with it a bit. I own a Wing so I am pretty familiar with the phone.
My problem is this. Just recently the phone started malfunctioning. The keyboard will sometimes not work at all, and other times only some buttons work. In addition i'm pretty sure that some of the buttons on the front of the phone were malfunctioning too. Other than that all is good.
I took the phone and CID unlocked it and installed a couple different ROMs to see if it were possibly a software problem. It was giving me problems with all of the different roms. Currently it is running the oem Tmobile 2.26 rom.
Has anyone had any issues like this. It almost seems as if there is a bad connection to the keyboard. Can anybody shine any light on this problem?
any help is appreciated!

It's definitely not a software problem,it's more a Hardware, either the keyboard needs cleaning or it's faulty and must be replaced.

I was thinking the same thing. im going to take it apart and clean it up. If all else fails, where can I find a keyboard?

Problem with XDA EXEC touch screen

Hi guys,
Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a problem with their exec's touch screen in that mine has completely stopped responding. The hardware buttons and keyboard work perfectly, I have tried a hard reset, taken the battery out etc and still nothing. It's odd as it must have stopped working at some point today, but it has been sat in my desk all day so nothing has damaged it to my knowledge. It's really bizarre! Anyhow, O2 have said they're sending a new one out, just got 3-5 working days without my Exec now. It's very odd and I just wondered if anyone else had had trhe same thing happen?
Cheers,
Fin
Sounds like a ROM-related issue. Have you tried a newer ROM (if there is a newer one already)?
I thought it might be software related, but to be honest there is no new ROM I can flash it with (and not invalidate the warranty, since I wouldn't be able to flash it back with the original O2 ROM when I send it back). It's really strange, as it has been working for nearly two weeks absolutely brilliantly and now it has decided to suddenly stop.
Thanks for your reply,
Fin
Anytime, hope you can get it to work again .
I just purchased an Exec yesterday and have been having similar issues with the touchscreen since I first turned it on.
After a while it does work again, but every now and then it stops working, The hardware buttons still work, so the phone is still responding.
Triggers that seem to cause this problem include starting a program, flipping the screen or looking at the phone with an odd look.
When running the update from the my-xda site it already is at that version, so I see no need in patching.
I take it this is a hardware issue that I cannot fix so will be needing to replace the unit?

I have the exact same problem on my m5000, stops working intermitently. Spoke to premier have a brand new handset on its way tommorow morning between 9-1. Not bad service free replacemeant and a brand new sealed box, so extra accesorys minus charger and battery.
Must be a common fault then. Mine started working again suddenlt the day before my new one arrived which was pretty annoying, although by peoples' experience here, it was probably only a matter of time before it packed up again. I have had my replacement a while now and it has so far been working perfectly.
At the moment it can't decide if its working or not.
It seems a couple of flips between landscape & portrait seem to get things working again.
I'll give it the weekend. See how it handles. Then most likely Monday I'll try get it replaced.
What do you reckon the best course of action would be? Go into the O2 shop and see if they'll swap it for a replacement, or contact O2 and get them to send me one.
Since there's always the chance the shop has a batch of duff phones.

P3600 buttons not working anymore

Hi!
Since yesterday my ok, windows, on and off hook and -- buttons aren't working anymore. The button in the middle and the cursor are still ok. Any ideas?
Due to the fact that the "--" (left and right) are not working I can't even do a hard reset.

Hi all,
OK I did a hard reset but it didn't work. Still no go :-(
The black coating is also peeling off. What a nice device.

more and more bugs are showing up every day passes... I somehow knew It would happen.. I don't think I'll take the risk of buying a p3600 through import without warranty after reading all these problems..
Good luck man
Trinity working well ..

While I dare not say my Trinity will be problem free, so far it has served me well. Everything is working as it should and the internal GPS has been enabled without a single problem. I'm on the test ROM (AKU3.3) and so far the performance is much better than my old Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes).
So far I have been very impressed with HTC built devices. A friend of mine's Dopod 838pro (Hermes) went into the pool accidentally, and it refuse to boot. After 3 days of intensive 'drying' it finally came back to life and it is working problem free until now.

Hehe, good to hear that....
I'm personally considering the hermes (TYTN) myself, because it's available here with warranty.. I hope the new ROM with AKU3.3 will improve it..

My personal advise to you would be to test the 3G call on that device before you buy it. The only advantage the Tytn has over Trinity is:
1) Flash light & Macro Picture
2) Keyboard
3) Additional hard button (Messaging, IE, 3G call)

The main reason I'm considering it is that i can buy it from here in israel with warranty, I don't wanna risk buying the trinity abroad.
I don't really care about 3G calls, I never use it, but 3G internet speeds aren't bad
the keyboard seems a big advantage over the trinity. The main advantage of the trinity is the small and pocket form factor, but unfortunately I can have it only by importing it

ok cheers, if it's any help they have repaired mine twice for this issue. Originally it went in for the peeling paint, but while they had it the buttons failed the test so were replaced. Then when they bodged the repair and it went back again, again the buttons failed the test and they replaced again.
Then when I get the phone back...the buttons don't work! Incidently before they started repairing the phone I never had a problem with the buttons
Hi!
I know that this thread is quite old but I prefer to post in this thread rather than opening a new one (sorry if I am not doing well but I am new at the community )
Yesterday I was working on a P3600 and suddenly all buttons stop working. The irDA also did not work. I have left the phone all the night without the battery (I really don't know what I was trying to achieve ), and this morning the buttons (and the irDa) did not work yet. Now, after a hard reset, it seems that all is working as it should.
My questions are, why after a hard reset? (it seems to point out a software issue); is this problem related to the touch screen problem I've been reading about in the forum? (perhaps the cause is the same); and finally, is it likely to appear again?
Thanks in advance
ROM version: 1.15.412.2 10/23/06 (original one)
Radio version: 1.20.00.11
ExtROM version: 1.15.412.101
My D-pad select, down, right and OK have been getting steadily worse requiring more pressure to use. Mine isn't software related. Just sent it back today asking for the black peeling issue to be repaired as well.
I held out as long as I could hoping that any issues had been resolved by HTC. I'll post when I get it back.

should i contact htc or e-tailer?
You will probably have to get return authorization through your retailer.
It's been about 2-1/2 weeks and no word from HTC. I emailed them today. I will be sure to post when I get it back regarding GPS Rom and peeling.
Just got it back - all pretty again. They replaced the bezel and switch board. Still has old rom but I am happy.

I've had the exact same thing happen twice now. Everything is going along fine and then suddenly all the keys stop working until I do a hard reset. The touch screen keeps going as normal. I haven't tested the IRDA but it appears that USB and active sync don't want to go either. A hard reset solves the problem but then I have to reinstall things which is annoying.
There must be other people out there with this problem. Has anyone come up with a solution?
I don't think, that there will be a fix...seems like a hardware problem to me.
I have nearly the same....the red and the green call buttons don't work properly!
For me they work immediately after a soft reset and then stop again within about 30 seconds. Hardware or software? it would appear to be software but I had the same issue using the official T-Mobile WM5 and still umder Black Satin WM6.....
think I'll flash back to official ROM and take it into the shop tomorrow!

dead bottom buttons

hi all, i bought a tytn at ebay, but
the after a short time of using the bottom buttons, they stop working.
touch screen and buttons on the side are stíll working, but the bottom buttons are dead.
sometimes after turning off amd turning on they are working for a short time again. a restart also helps to make them work.
but its not funny to restart every 10 minutes.....
it is an e-plus tytn from germany with wm5.
do u guys think that it is a hardware or a software error?
I seem to have this problem on and off myself and think it's related to either the rom on the phone or the radio rom but am not sure which. It seems sometimes I have this problem and it seems to come and go depending on what combination of rom/radio rom I have installed. If I was smart I'd find a combination that works well for me and stick to it but I always like to play with things so typically every day or two I'm reseting
yeah, i have the same problem.... i hate to restart the phone every now and then, but I need to figure this out sometime soon, or I'm gonna upgrade to WM6 to see if that solves my problem. lol...
did anybody else have an idea to solve the problem?

http://cnn.cn/shop/8525tytn-flex-cable-p-1732.html
I opened up my tytn, to find out the problem, and I found a small crack in the flexcable mentioned above.
Before it was never opened nor did anything strange happen with it, so this seems to be yet an other production problem/fault..
More and more people seem to have the same problem, time to presure htc for a repair....
Ok for me this is too late, but all for the good cause.. will just order myself a new cable and try to swap it..
Any ideas where to get the flex cable these days? Not finding it at the link above and internet searches aren't panning out either.
FYI:
Just got back my HTC TyTN from service under warranty, sent for exactly the same problem.
The technician I spoke to directly said that maybe about 90% of the lower keys malfunctions are caused by the lower keyboard board behaving erratically and it is a well-known hardware problem.
A board replacement solved it, my TyTN is working perfectly again, they also replaced the stylus holding rubber (which was broken already from the early days) and, surprise, they upgraded my WM5 device (I had to revert everything to the initial versions before handing it to them) to the latest official HTC WM6 Rom. Even bigger surprise, although what I gave them was a WWE device, when I got it back they had upgraded it to the localized (official Greek) version. Life is good.
Anyways, seems the only real solution to this is a visit to the repair store, hopefully under warranty and reverted back to the original settings...

Soft Reset Causes Device to hang

I've got a bit of an odd issue with an XDA Trion/Hermes -
Basically no matter what ROM I use (WM5/WM6/Cooked) after installing a few apps (doesn't matter which ones - I've tried all kinds of combinations) when I do a soft reset the device will boot back up and hang at the Windows Mobile splash screen. If I hard reset the device functions fine again until I load some stuff on it. I've also seen it do this without anything installed - but it is a lot less frequent.
All in all I can't go more than a few days without having to hard reset and reload my stuff. Sometimes its one day, sometimes its multiple days. Restoring from a backup also causes this to happen - so hard resetting and then restoring is not an option. Also, I've left the device at the splash screen from a full battery to dead just to make sure I wasn't being impatient.
Anyone seen this before? Any ideas before I call HTC and ask them to look at it?
Suggest you do some searches on "bad memory block"

Well did I did a bunch of searching as you suggested - spent almost 4 hours yesterday just on the forum looking for answers on this. Using "mtty" and checking in the bootloader I've determined there to be no bad blocks.
I've tried all sorts of different WM6 Roms, Hard SPL, you name it. All of them end up with the same problem.
The only time I don't have a problem is when I use an OEM WM5 ROM. Using an OEM WM6 Rom - I have the problem come back.

Any other ideas?
Mmm... well I think you need someone more expert than I. You might try a PM to the likes of MrVanx to see if anyone has reported this or some of the other developers for the Hermes Pof et al.

Thanks Mike I appreciate the attempt - I think I might just be happy with the fact that its working again. Its really just backup device to my iPhone but at least now I can rely on it again to hold onto my data for more than a couple days. I'll spend some more time reading all the posts. Now that I know what I have to do to get it working again after trying something experimental its not so bad.
Thanks again
I've been having the same problem with my 8525, it like sometimes more then not, it freezes at the green windows mobile. It is really frustrating, let me know if you have found a solution, but the problem with my 8525 is the lag, in it, I'm thinking of maybe switching to a blackberry 8320 if this problem doesn't get fixed.

Are you experiencing the same problem as the poster? I am not experiencing anything like it at all. I have a jasjam, and flashed with a shipped ROM first, and then with CRCinAU's version 11.2, what have you got installed on your phone? Just remember the specs of the hermes, compared to the likes of a raphael or even a polaris (touch cruise).
Don't go jumping the gun getting an iphone, read this bit for a bit of a review. I honestly not having the problems some of the guys are having here knowing my phone's limitations and what I can get out of my hermes.

I am getting the same problem as the poster. I have a Palm Treo 750 running WM6 from Palm web site ATT version 2.25 download.
After I load a few of my apps on there the phone will all of a sudden start playing up with the buttons not responding. I do what you should be able to do and soft reset by it all stops at the windows logo then end of story. Only way out is hard reset and set everything up again.

some keys i have to press super hard, other keys i tap and it types the key like 3 times
like when i press a
it types
aaa
and im like wha?
i am still under warranty, should i just put original stock rom back on and ask them to repair it or try and get it switched out for a vogue 0.o
I have a similar problem on my device. Is this a known problem?
Ditto here, the Function key has to be pressed hard, and some keys in the first row are acting up as well, but primarily the Q key.
I'm not sure that this has been officially acknowledged by HTC or any providers but it seems to be a widespread issue for end users.
While the "hard presses" for Function, Q and P seem to be a physical problem many users have reported that using the following CAB fixes the duplicate entries.
The CAB is being provided by UTStarcom and be downloaded at the below page.

This is deff a problem. My phone does the exact same thing as OP.
I press a and it types it three times. This is the only key that this happens on.
I didn't realize how bad the keyboard was degrading until yesterday, when my Mogul was replaced. For me, the ./0, y/1 and function key were the worst offenders. The unit was swapped because the usb port broke. The port failed because it's a really cheap design, 2 pins broke off . The rep in the repair center insinuated that it was a really common issue, she didn't even look at the port when I explained the problem. On the plus side,I got rid of the dreaded white spot and my keyboard works well again, but for how long? The keyboard, screen and usb port problems are all common complaints on this board and others. What I surmise from this is that HTC makes a pretty crappy product! When this phone is retired in a year or so, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to replace it with a non HTC/non Windows Mobile (or whatever MS calls it next). Every time I use my phone, I wonder if it be wonderfully helpful tool this time, or a frustrating pain in the ass? Unfortunately, the later happens all too often!

These cabs dont necessarily fix the hardware keyboard issues. It fixes the old issues of the function button always being on in certain applications.
The issues that people are having is just wear and tear. The XV6800 has a cheap build.
hi guys,
same here, when i type "a" either doesnt do anything or it gives me a duplicate of 3 a's. and that started happening since i upgraded to dcd 3.2.0 an on.
also when i switch to landscape mode it sometimes writes an H or Y or P. don't know if it is OS related or hardware but it is a brand new phone and i never recall having this before going to dcds greatest 3.2.X.
edit: also i've been using quickmenu ever since 3.2.0 because of the x-button issue so i was thinking is any of you using quickmenu too?
fn key problem
So I guess many people have this "hard press fn key" issue. Annoys me a lot, especially with password sites where I cannot see the entry. Would this justify replacement from spring, i have full insurance?

I don't really think it's a hardware degradation issue. This is because there is no gradual degradation. If it were I would think just a few keys would start acting this way and then eventually a bunch of them would. With me I just all of a sudden noticed one day that all my keys were acting wonky. I think it was after a ROM flash but I can't recall any specific one that broke it (I change the ROM more often than I use my keyboard I think haha).
The CAB seems to help a little. I still have to take more care in typing than I used to but it's better than having so many repetitions of the same key.

I still say it's a hardware thing. Because if it was the software / ROM you would just be able to hard reset and your keyboard would be back to the state it was before.
My keyboard has issues with the E,O,H,Function Key, Space Bar, and the L.
It's something we will have to live with or just return our phones for a new one and wait for that one to wear out.
Just like the spots on the screen, loose stylus and so on. The 6800 was a bad build for HTC.
I Did Not Typs0r That! I Did Not Typs0r That!
ya well. it is definitely hardware. spoke to 4 co-workers with same company issued phone. one of them still has the stock rom on it, lol.. anyway
all now reporting this same issue.
i mean i was able to use my keyboard 2 months ago, and now i can't at all. its like i have a fat vogue minus 64 megs of ram. i mean i really got used to just using the on screen one.
i gotta figure out how to get stock rom back on so i can bring it to verizon and demand... satisfaction! only prob is nochem said something about it bricking your phone after putting radio 3.39 on it

keyboard failing on Telus P4000
I got the same problem with my Telus P4000..
I think this is how I ran into this problem ...
I had radio 3.39 and dcd 3.1.2 at the time ...
I then decided to upgrade to radio 3.42.30 and another OS ROM (version I dont quite recall.)
That is when I ran into this issue with the keyboard.
So I went back to dcd 3.1.2 (kept 3.42.30 radio)
Same problem.
So i decided to revert back to stock ROM on TELUS (2.13) and radio 1.32
Still having this issue... I hope I do not have to bring in my phone to have it repaired. It will be the second time I bring it in
Flashed yesterday to DCD3.2.3 which uses the same keyboard driver as 2.1.4 (according to the changelog).
My keyboard was wonky as hell before this flash unless I installed the fix and even with the fix it would sometimes mess up. With the new ROM (and old driver) my keyboard works almost flawlessly without the fix installed.
Still everyone thinks it's hardware-related but it definitely showed up all of a sudden with a flash months ago and it disappeared just as quickly (for me anyway).
If you have keyboard issues maybe try the new ROM and see if you have a successful fix like I did.
definitely software, i should make a youtube vid to show it.
loaded up the stock rom to bring back to verizon to return saying keyboard was all quirky and i was standing there and everything was fine. im like what the hell?
what the hell brah?
ok so here is the instructions that fixed it for me:
restored stock rom
tested keyboard to see it working fine
flash it with the newer roms with radio 3.39
everything seems fine.
i can't explain it but it works.
my Problem possibly due to environment fluctuations: Heat-Cold-Humidity

I got the same problem with my Telus P4000..
I think this is how I ran into this problem ...
I had radio 3.39 and dcd 3.1.2 at the time ...

Ok... after I went back to TELUS stock, i then proceeded to flash up to dcd's latest at the time: 3.2.3 with 3.42.30 radio. Keyboard issue was still there ... So.. where to go from here right ...
Well, I recalled that I began having this issue not long after flashing 3.42.30 RADIO i think it was initially. If i recall correctly, it was not immediate. I left to go camping for 4 days and my battery died .. So I left the phone off for most of those 4 days. When I got back from camping, that is where the keyboard issue began. Note: It did not get wet, but it obviously gets damp at night. My thought: phone off for extended amount of time in damp environment, somehow affected the keyboard. I don't know how, maybe some sort of rusting of sorts due to the hot/cold/humid fluctuations inside the tent (estimated environmental fluctuations>15-30 celsius with 60-90%RH). Reason I say this is the following:
I decided to pass my fingers accross the keyboard on every buttoms back and forth with a decent amount of force. Idea being that I could maybe create enough friction or force to disrupt whatever is causing the issue under my keyboard .. I did that for a bit. And my keyboard is working better. Not perfect, but I would say 90%. I barely notice it now ..
Thanks for bringing this thread up. I have beeen getting a few missed keys, and in particular, the Fn key has been flaky. Either not working or double pressing so the Fn light comes on and locks.
So, when I heard others having the same issue, a short while back I sprayed the keyboard with contact cleaner. All better now. Now the typing mistakes are all my fault, not the keyboard.
If you try this, use a plastic safe cleaner. I used Caig Pro Gold.
