Remote connection to home PC or work

How can i connect my home pc or work pc through my Pocket PC through GPRS.Is it possible by any software.

Yes, this is assuming you have set your home PC to accept incoming Remote connection, and selected which users has the permission.
From your Pocket PC, you can use Terminal Service Client:
- First of all, you must know your home PC's IP Address.
- Launch Terminal Service Client, key in your home PC's IP Address, click connect.
- Once connected, you'll be prompted username and password to log in.
- Always use a different username than the one already logged on, as this will log the current desktop session off.
Well, since most of us use Dynamic IP DSL connection, the IP address changes everytime the PC reconnects. Therefore I have made a small Windows program to be run in the home PC to constantly update its current IP address to a website. So, from anywhere you can log on to this site (just bookmark the site) and check your home PC's current IP address. If you're interested, you can try my program, it's free.

Iam using XP prof.Where is Terminal service there,can u loacte.I want to test first with ActiveSync to connect my PC from Pocket PC.I have launched Terminal service in Pocket PC.It asks for Server.Its my Home pC IP address?
Please help again iam new to this!!

Make sure, your XP Pro is set to accept Remote connection, from your XP Pro PC:
- Start > Control Panels > System > Remote > Remote Desktop
1) Check "Allow users to connect to my computer"
2) Click "Select Users" to add users which you allow for Remote Connection. * Strongly advise you to set password for each username
Once this is done. You can check your PC's IP address:
- Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
1) Type in ipconfig
2) You will the various IPs for your PC.
If you want to test using your Pocket PC, use your PC's LAN IP. (Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection).
However when your on WiFi or GPRS, you'll have to use your PC's WLAN IP, which you can obtain by using my program I mentioned earlier.

Yes, you can. However, you'll still use your home PC's LAN IP when the PocketPC is docked in the cradle.

Its realy nice job!!As you said to use Home PC Lan IP.I dont have netowrk on Ethernet card no cable pluged in.So i cant see Lan IP address.When I tried POcket PC Terminal its not connecting to Server,i was trying by USB Docked PPC.What to do

I gather your not connected to a LAN nor having an Ethernet card installed.
If you want to try out Terminal Services Client from your PocketPC, you may want to download this program called vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
Once u get this program, you can view your Pocket PC's current IP addresses. If you want to use TSC via USB cradle, take a look under "Serial on USB", the IP address for its Default Gateway should be your PC's IP address.

VPN?
Great thread for me guys. Really helped a lot. Now I can use Terminal Services to remote control my VPN Server which has the public internet IP address.
Next, however, I need to remote operate one of the workstations on my VPN. I tried logging onto the VPN through GPRS that worked. I can TS remote the server, but cannot connect to the workstation. After connecting to the VPN I tried TS with the workstation ip (local network ip of 168.192.xx.xx All I got was a could not connect server timed out message. Any ideas?

BTW the LAst IP Address web site is a great idea for us that travel constantly. Thankfully my cable modem keeps my IP address fairly static for long periods at a time. But this will make a great backup for those Murphy Law times when I gotta get on and the modem rebooted! Thanks for a great service.

Could it be a built-in or personal firewall installed on the workstation? or maybe the workstation's port for Remote Desktop is not opened?

No, no firewall and remote is open. In deed, I have VNC running on the workstation and after logging on to the vpn i can remote the workstation using vnc viewer. but i hate the interface compared to TS and don't really want to run another server if not necessary. btw i can run the workstation from my xp laptop using remoe desktop connection after logging ono the vpn

Access to 127.0.0.1

Hello, I developed a webserver for the pda, but I cant access http://127.0.0.1.
I found a patch for the OS to circumvent this, but that not what I like.
Is there any other way to gain access to a localhost device even no other network is running?

Get a tool like this vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
Use this tool to identify your IP address of "Serial on USB" (assuming you're connecting the pda via USB cradle), the IP address for "Default Gateway" will take you to access your desktop website instead of 127.0.0.1

I did not ask for the desktop website, I run the webserver on the pda! I think you did not understand me at all. Sorry :-/,

I got a webserver running on the pda, with no usb no bluetooth no connection at all, and I can not access 127.0.0.1 or localhost without a patch for the pocket ie, ...

Yes it does, and its a know problem, cause all pocket pcs with 2003 have it ...

Using a Port other than 3389 for Terminal services ?????????

Is it possible to use a port other 3389 with the Terminal services client?
Or is this hardcoded into the client ?

Please explain ? As we run a multiple server network with Terminal services running on various port from 3385 up to 3399. We also change the default port on our workstations (XP prof) from 3389 This a well documented item. You then specify in Terminal server client:- IPORT. Example: 84.234.456.789:3396. Use it everyday!

two ways that you can do this:
1: on the host machine, regedit to here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp
Find "Portnumber" and open. Click on "Decimal" and change to the desired port. The PC will now listen on your specified port number for incoming terminal service requests.
2: If you have a router you can use port redirection. (virtual servers etc)
Specify the ext port number (eg. 3390) then the int port number (3389) then the IP address of your target PC. This will redirect all traffic recieved on port 3390 to port 3389 to your specified internal IP address.
To access remotely for example using remote desktop connection, enter your IP address (or dynamic DNS address) followed by :3390

So you can't specify the port in terminal services client connection box (as per a Full size PC runing XP Prof) only as a registery change.

Your piccy is right, you can enter IP addresses followed by a port number.
eg: 81.33.44.55:3399
The problem with, for example XP Pro is that it will only listen on 3389 by default, the registry change is necessary if you want to access more than 1 PC on a network.
As per your piccy, once you have edited the registry to a chosed port, the PC will then listen on that port (eg. :3390).
I personally use Option 2, this requires no change to the registry of a PC, the router does the redirection for you.
for example:
PC 1 = 192.168.0.1
PC 2 = 192.168.0.2
To access PC 1 allow a rule in the router to pass port (external) 3389 to (internal) 3389 to 192.168.0.1
To access PC 2 allow rule in router to pass port (external) 3390 to (internal) 3389 to 192.168.0.2
this way, when you open the remote desktop connection client and enter say, 81.44.231.22:3390 the router will see 3390 and redirect it to 3389 straight to 192.168.0.2

Hi Codiac.
I think I'm confusing you here. Port change, at the host is not the problem. Either by router redirection, or registry edit of the listening port of the HOST. Its the CLIENT in Win mobile 5 wont let you specify a port when connecting to a host. You can with a registery edit of the Win mobile client on the Pocket PC, change the port, but not at connection IP 'time'

need a bit of help, how to connect to my pc using athena??

Ok i know i already saw the answer of this somewhere but i already looked for it and i just cant find it.
I have a athena and i would like to remotely connect to my pc that is on my office and use it remotely, i know there are programs to do this i just cant get the right words to find them.
can anyone help me out on this?

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

Also if your IP's range anywhere within 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, the you're behind a firewall.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org

more vpn pain

hi all ppl, i was wondering if anyone could help with setting up a vpn on my home.
the router/firewall that acts as a server is a netgear dg834g and I would like to connect my HD. i never get to connecting and the errors are:
- when i use ip address it asks for log & password. I haven't set up any log/pass in the router as there is NO possibility to do that! then i try to login as administrator (from the local PCs) and the error is "the remote party has ended this connection." same thing if i leave both fields blank.
- when i use the dyndns alias everything happens the same way but the error msg i get then is "VPN server problems. Verify your username and password, and try again etc etc".
note that i have setup both machines to use ipsec with a pre-shared key which is typed correctly (it seems to be recognized/accepted by the router)
am i missing something stupid here or simply my router does not support winmo ?
any help/tip will be highly appreciated. thanks!

check the mac address filtering tables, or try to experiment with different authentications mode.
