Sprite Backup on WM6? - Wing, P4350 General

Hello,
A couple of days ago I ran into serious problems while installing a GPS program. I suspect it whas not compatible with WM6, during the installation it refused to install it on my mem card and failed to install it on my device. Installation aborted and when I selected to have the program removed it removed Mobil shell instead...No problem, I have a good backup from Sprite which gave me different problems. Now I could no longer synchronize my phone with my computer...Finally started with a fresh WM6 and reinstalled all my programs. But as before my Sprite backup gives me a msg that a certain file could not be included...anybody else experienced the same?
Warning:File could not be included: \windows\compimeh.0407.dat
Warning: file could not be included: \windows\lic\Isoma(followed by X amount of O's) ended with .db

DonTworry, WM 6 blocks this file so sprite can not acess it. The file is from HTC Home on Today Screen. The file will be installing by itself after Hardware Reset. I tested that already.
BTW: SPB Backup has same error

How to make Sprite Backup 3 work with XDA2??

can someone please help me to get sprite back up v3 to work on my xda2. my aim is to backup my device to my PC. it either freezez my xda2 or hard resets it!!!
thanks a lot
Only after I bought Sprite 3.0 I found out it doesn't work properly. In my case, V3.0 erased my SMS after a restore! Solution? According to Sprite SOftware, they working on it. In the meantime, this is what I did:
For the first Backup
- Make an executable (.exe) backup file and save it to Storage (permanent storage on your XDAII). It will be a slightly bigger file
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail option and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Prgogram Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup. You need to do the executable file only once
For daily backups, save them to a storage card.
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail opetion and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Program Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup.
To Restore
- Run the executable backup file first
- Then do a soft reset
- Run Sprite and restore form your last daily backup file
It anly sound akward, but it worked for me!
PS: You will loose your e-mail account settings and all its folders' contents. But I found that I could live with this. It's better than having to reinstall all software to your XDAII again!
..like walking on thin ice!
hey michael..thanks for the details.. but sprite backup seems to hate xda2..
is there a way to back up to pc with this workaround? can i use the same approach but pc as the destination?
any news when sprite will release the new version?
anyone knows of another backup sw that backs up xda2 to PC?
thanks
Hawk
I hate to be arguementative - but I am using Sprite Pocket Backup v.3 with my imate and it is working perfectly. It even restores my SMS!
Are you sure you are not using ver. 2.X which did have the SMS restore problem?
I've tried with my xdaII , the sms inbox was restored OK, but I have some problem after the backup restored. I never received SMS anymore.
don't know why....
so I never used it again.
i'm using imate with rom 1.72 and sprite backup v3
Hey Brian
Can u please give details about yr device, e.g rom etc. and installed applications.. i never got to to work on the imate. please give some details on if u were able to backup to pc?
anybody know of any program that backs up imate to pc?
thanks

On my MDA2 SpriteBackup crashes! (automatic backup timed at 23:55 everyday) Looks like some file is in use and Sprite is not able to backitup and the whole backup process is stopped. So on my MDA2 backup has NEVER finished!
I'm using backup in ActiveSync - I have it set to automatic mode - everytime I put my MDA2 into the cradle, it synchronizes with outlook and then does FULL BACKUP.
And I'm sure this kind of backup works well - I restored my MDA many times after hardreset from ActiveSync's backup and everything was always OK.
hawk -
Your second question first - Of course you know that ActiveSync can backup your PPC to your PC (Tools -> Backup/Restore). Also, Sprite Backup ver.3 can backup to your PC as well - it can install a tool in your system tray to run the Sprite Backup PC Service.
I had version 2.X of Sprite Backup and experienced the SMS service failing to receive messages after a restore. With ver. 3.0.0 I have actually restored my imate after an unintentional HR and SMS worked perfectly thereafter.
Now, for my configuration:
imate with ROM Ver. 1.72.00WWE
1GB SD card
VITO Voice Dialer
PHM Registry Editor
MS PocketStreets
m-possible Backgammon
HP Mobile Printing
Zendrui PocketZenPhone
Syntact GameBox
Sprite Software Sprite Backup
Sprite Software Space Detective
Sprite Software PocketMon
Spb Pocket Plus
Mobimate WorldMate Pro
MS Cubicle Chaos
Laridian Pocket Bible (with 10 Bible translations)
Laridian Daily Reader
Illium Software eWallet
Total Commander
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0
A.Khogo tAgenda
SSnap
IDiff
I also have the drivers for the Stowaway keyboard installed.
It's pretty well loaded!

What version? I'm using spritet 3 v1517 without issue. Email and SMS restore correctly. The only conflict I've found is using GPRS monitor.
I had the same problem with the earlier versions of Sprite Backup too. After restoration, my XDA will have a complete blackout on SMSs. So i have decided not to install it again.
BRosenow, is your Vito Voice Dialer the PE version? I can't seem to get the non-PE version to work tho.

Likewise, I have no problems on my Xda II - mine does an automatic, self extracting backup every morning at 08:45 to my storage card. They always come back completely, sweet as...

Yes, it is Voice Dialer PE v3.0.
Sprite Backup
I'm using it with my XDA II and no problem. I restores everything as it was. Using Sprite Backup V3.0.0 build 1517.
I don't backup to my PC but to a SD card.
Regards,
Mark
whats the reason to backup to a pc using something like Sprite
over just using activesync's pc backup restore option ?
i understand the sd card backup but not why people use it on pc's
If I'm not wrong ActiveSync backup from PC gives problems with restore after a ROM upgrade.
Maybe that's the reason. I agree with you. It has no additional value.
Mark
I use Sprite to backup my imate to my laptop from time-to-time, just in case something were to happen to my SD backup (loose the SD card, backup files become corrupted, etc.). Considering the little time and storage space it takes, what's the harm in having a little insurance?
And I use the Sprite backup to PC because it takes about 2 min. for a full backup . . . can ActiveSync do that?
nah
with ms you get what you pay for since activesync is free is slow can be
a full backup prob take about 15->30min
i prefer to use the same program 1. to backup to sd card & pc for compatiblity reasons in order to exchange files if needed, 2. sprite does exe files 3. activesync may not restore to a newer rom properly.
the funny thing is some people are using sprite with no problem, others like me are just going thru hell to make it work.
on sprite's support they mention something about stopping some processes in windows\startup\
tried that too, didn't work.
can anyone diagnose the problem with the inconsistency of the results from one person to the other and definite solution?
Hawk
Maybe the ROM version that differs! Sprite Backup works for me fine. See my ROM version below with my signature.
My startup folder contains:
AFlashman, BTTrayCE, CFlashMan, CheckAutorun, ChgDFLnk, IA_Caller_ID, MMREG, NFlashMan, poutlook, stk, Symantec Antivirus, TFlashMan

Well . . . you need to be VERY selective of which files you restore after a ROM upgrade anyway. You cannot do a full restore (from a full backup) after a ROM upgrade, because .exe and .dll files (and others) will be restored, replacing the newer versions. This leaves the device in a state that is somewhere between the two ROM versions and will cause all sorts of problems.
You should only restore documents, email and personal databases - not system data.

Spb Backup Problem

HI,
I HAD SPB BACKUP INSTALLED ON MY BA BUT THE SCHEDULED BACKUP FUNCTION SEEMS TO NOT WORK PERFECTLY.
every time i set a scheduled backup at a certain time it starts the device, perform all the necessary actions (the time to do that is equal to the period it lasts if made manually, it creates the file of back up but.....after it starts up the device automatically, the following written appears:
"unable to locate the shortcut or to open the file"
After i tried to open the .exe backup file and it says:"the file is corrupted"
The lenght of this file is only 450 kb while the one i can create manually is 15 mb.
I discovered that the file which is not openable at the start up is named "SPBBACKUPRUNNER.LNK" AND THE LINK IS REFERRED TO A FILE IN WINDOWS FOLDER NAMED (OF COURSE) "SPBBACKUP RUNNER"
Which could be the possible problem not allowing this.
One most important thing is that i tried also SPRITE BACKUP AND an other backup program and also with these nes i have the same problems performing a scheduled back up.
Is there a setting i have to modify?is there a possible program that stop the scheduled back up program.
Same for me. I have tried all options without success. I am now doing backup manually at regular intervals.
I found that this is the problem when you backup the calendar from WM5 or earlier ROM version and restore to WM6 ROM. So, just don't try to do it that way, make a totaly new calendar in WM6 and the backup and restore will be fine.
I Tried A Scheduled Back Up In Wm 6 But It Doesn't Start When The Device Is Off Or If It Starts, At The End , The File Is Corrupted
hi
even using the manually backup creating a corrupted file , any how to fix it please
i have the same thing was...
one thing i do is Hard Reset my BA, after that it's backup as usual.
well can say just one thing, do not use crappy backup software
i have setuped my device to recover after hard reset for about 10 minutes with all installed software and games without any backup software just one sync and the cabs from the extrom

I tried WM6 upgrade! (Looking now for WM5 ROM.)

Well, finally I tried the (official) upgrade from WM5 (1.8.407.1) to WM6.
I found detailed instructions using SpriteBackup 3.14 or higher. And since Version 5.01 were deliverd with my Herald, I gave it a try!
But that's were this endless night began...
The instructions used "GetUpgradeData.exe" from Sprite Software.
This is what I did:
- I created a complete Backup with Sprite Backup 5.01.
- I did a hard-reset.
- I run the "GetUpgradeData.exe" and got a sbu-file I stored.
- I actually performed the ROM-upgrade
- I installed Sprite Backup.
But wenn I tried to restore the Backup I made earlier I didn't found the "Upgrade-Mode" that was mentioned in the instructions and which I created the sbu-file for.
On the Sprite-Homepage, I got the information, that this functions seems to exist only since 5.1!
So I installed the newest version as trial. But this damn software doesn't restore backup made with older versions of itself! :-O
Since I found no possibility to makes Sprite Backup 6 *do* this, I decided to give 5.01 a try nevertheless. But it didn't work. I actually can't remember anymore, what error came exactly in this situation, but I realized it would work.
Since then I look for a downgrade to restore my backup on good old WM5.0 and try the whole szenario with Sprite 5.1 (I don't like 6).
I actually *found* a WM5-ROM, but it's not 1.8.407.1, it's 5.4.407.1.
- I "updated" the ROM, WM5 runs fine.
- I installed Sprite 5.01.
- I run Sprite 5.01 and got an error mentioning to little free memory!
- I performed a hard-reset, installed Sprite and tried to restore selected parts of the backup to need less memory. It ends successful, but during the following Warm-Start I get repeatetly the error that "The last cold-start" wasn't complete. So it performs a new reset by itself.
And that *are* my possibilities:
- restore all and have to little memory
or
- restore parts an get this weird error.
Why is this? and How can I change it?
I still have the hope that a 1.8.407.1-ROM would fix all problems. But where to take from. :-((
Any ideas how I can save my Herald? Please? It's 7am now an I'm puzzeling for 5 hours now. I want everything back to normal! :-(
Thanks for every help you can give me...
I didn´t really read the howl thread - but
NEVER try to take a WM5 backup to work with a WM6 Rom!!!
You never treid to use a Windows 95 backup on a Windows Vista PC???
So why you wanne restore a backup from a complete different Rom??
Install all new. NEVER use a backup when flashing a new rom.
Just my 2 cents

Well, my two, too, until yesterdey, when I learnd about that option in Sprite Backup. I quote from the manual of "Sprite Backup 6":
http://www.spritesoftware.com/downloads/SpriteBackupHelp.pdf said:
Setting Upgrade Mode Options
Sprite Backup automatically detects if the restore process is being performed between different devices or ROM versions and automatically enables this function and you will be asked to select the type of 'Upgrade Mode' operation you wish to perform.
ROM: Use this option to perform restore operations between the same devices with different ROM revisions. For example: restoring from a KJAM ROM 2.16.9 to a KJAM AKU2 ROM version.
Device: Use this option when you wish to restore across devices and ROM versions. For example: When restoring a backup file created on a WM2005 KJAM device onto a WM 2006 JAZJAR device.
Safe: If your device does not boot after performing a ‘ROM Upgrade’ or ‘Device Upgrade’ restore use the ‘Safe Upgrade’ operation.

The problem is that my version of Sprite Backup does not have this capability unexpectetly. Which I realized when it was to late.
one comment of a nearly flashaddict:
i ALLWAYS install all new. it is much faster after a few month when you make a hardreset and flash new......
believe me. i flashed so many roms - and allways installed it completely new!!
Sure you are right. And actually that's my choice now.
I made it to restore at least my personal data in WM5, backed them up new and restorem *them* on new installed WM6.
Now I'm on the configurating, installing, reconstructing part. :-((

SPB BackUp +100,000, Sprite Backup -100,000

So I decided to update my ROM.
http://www.htc.com/sea/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=250&cat=2&dl_id=627
Have been using SPB Backup since day 1 I got my phone and have successfully used it few times to restore my data when some software corrupted another part of the phone. Finally I found out today from HTC's website after trying my phone's serial number several times under different countries that my ROM's will be from Singapore.
Got the ROM above (107.2) and saw few hotfixes as well. I already download the +SMS fix because a kind soul uploaded the cab file on xda.
So eager to have my TP2 show 288MB of RAM and the Yahoo stock update, I went to the download page. There I saw that I could also download Sprite backup tool recommended by HTC which was free for HTC Singapore users. Downloaded and Installed, did a backup and thought, great after my ROM upgrade is done, will restore the backup which will restore everything (themes, registry, menus, software etc).
Well WRONG. After the ROM update, ran Sprite back up. Gave me few options. Restore personal data, level 1, level 2 and level 3. Well I needed Level 3 to restore everything including registry since I had so much crap installed on my phone like TomTom and so many other software. Sprite back up failed miserably with a miserable error. "Cannot restore, error".
I was like 'oh shyte'. Lucky for me I take SPB Backup's before I install a software that I think might conflict or might give me problems afterwards. I had a 3rd august backup on my storage card and my laptop. Tried restoring that and VOILA, everything restored fine. Tomtom runs fine, all the software is still there, no registry errors so far, themes, menu layout etc.
Oh and after the restore I did check my ROM version again, it had changed back from 107.2 to 107.1 (the label has changed but the actual ROM is 107.2) but the hardware is still showing 288MB
So if you are keen to upgrade but think you are going to have to re-install everything from scratch after a ROM upgrade. SPB Backup is the answer. Best $$$ spent in my life.
ps - I don't think so if I will be this lucky when HTC provides free upgrade to Win Mobile 6.5 and try and restore a Win Mobile 6.1 backup on top of that. So word of caution.
Edit - I only tried Level 3 restore which apparently according to another user posted down the bottom reckons is the last resort option. Trying Level 1 would have restored fine which I never did try. So Sprite backup most prob works fine like SPB Backup.

Yup same here, I have updated my Europe ROM and after the sbp restore, it change back from 401.1 to 401.0. Still give me the 288MB.
btw, there is a registry entry that stored the ROM version which was overwrriten by SPB restore, you can be change back... at
HKLM/Software/OEM/ROMVersion to the correct version.
Should actually be:
SASHIMI\Manual setup +100,000, Setup using Backup Program -100,000 after ROM upgrade.
I'm not a fan of restoring all data after upgrading\flashing a ROM, as probably a lot on XDA don't. Other than that it's pretty subjective. I for one like Sprite Backup more than I do other (shareware) backup programs.
I use PIM Backup to create a backup every night at 04:00am.
Once a week Sprite Backup creates a complete backup at 01:00am. This way it's finished before PIM Backup starts again.
This is my personal setup, and it hasn't let me down for years now
I also flashed the rom update and restored my backup with sprite backup.
Worked like a charm because I used Merge level 1.
The help say,
Use level 1
In case of problem use level 2
Still problems use level 3
So I don't understand why you used level 3 and complane all the same.

I never tried Level 1 and Level 2. I thought Level 3 would have done the job. hmmm my bad.

Restore Failure

Hello,
I would appreciate ANY help on this matter. Yesterday i had no choice but to hard reset my phone. I always backup my phone every night, and thought (at the time) thank god! However, when i went into my sd card and clicked on the .exe file to restore the backup....it came up with an error message saying:
"The file Backup.exe cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
Isnt this type of file meant to self restore without the original program....seeing as i dont have the copy of sprite backup after hard resetting?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.
If it helps the version of sprite backup i had before everything went haywire was Sprite Backup, HTC edition V6.2.3, Build 2330 (my paranoia makes me write these type of things down elsewhere)
THANKYOU again!
as far as i experience backup procedure
hi..
.. as far as i have experience ....sprite backup procedure ( there might be alternatives ...that i am not aware of but..) on my kaizer... for past 2 yrs and now ..blackstone..(hd ) you can only restore backup through sprite program..(installed on storage card or from sprite progam that should also be installed automatic with original installation on pc..?)i have found that i could also not click on.. backup .exe directly with stylus (i wanted to move .exe to another file...as it would freeze phone..but had to do it with pc...(cut and paste..etc..)i had to also ,when doing restores in the past ..open sprite program and select restore from within ....etc...
thus..i suggest..
if you do not have software any more on phone...is it not possible to get copy and re install it again ..and then try to do restore... selecting your original.exe you still have on sd card ...( i have done this once or twice ..and it worked for me ..but also .. failed a few times ..!! why i dont know...?)
...also as a safety measure i would copy backup.exe to pc.(temporary also.)..and work from there..?
what about checking sprite website mabe for clues or answers...??
hope it works for you..
good luck..
unfortunately i went to their website and downloaded the latest and only version they have which is higher than my old one and it could still not read the backup file. It must only work for the version i originally had.
Thank you anyway
