Tether: Two 8525's one laptop - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I just bought my wife an 8525 and I am having trouble tethering it to my laptop. I have tried everything I can find/think of. The original 8525 still tethers just fine. Both will sync with Active Sync but when I plug in the new 8525 and start the wireless modem my laptop doesn't recognize any new hardware/modem. Both 8525's have the same rom and all the settings seem to be the same. When I go through the control panel and try to add a new modem my laptop doesn't see the new 8525 and so it won't let me add the new 8525 as another modem. Any ideas??? I went through all the normal steps 9 months ago when I got my 8525 to tether so I know all the normal stuff..
What am I missing here? Active sync works with both phones but I can tether with the new one....
thanks.

Driver problem
I just got the second 8525 working as a wireless modem on my work laptop but still no go on the one at home. Obviously the problem is with my home laptop. I think it is having trouble installing the driver. I remember when I first set it up for my original 8525 I couldn't use the driver off the CD-ROM that came with the phone but I had to download what looked like the same driver and save it to my desktop and then it worked from there. This time I have tried getting the driver from both locations and it still doesn't work.
FYI when I got both phones set up on my work laptop it show two separate modems under the Control Panel. One is "HTC USB Modem" and the other is "HTC USB Modem #2". The modem that shows up as available depends on which phone I have connected. At home I have not been able to get modem #2 (8525 #2) to be recognized as a modem. Any ideas? Has anyone else had trouble with the driver from the CD that came with the phone? Do we know why it will work on some computers but not others?
thanks....

Chances are the one that is working is running an older rom. The newer 8525's require you to use a program called Internet Sharing to tether with. Goto programs and look for it. Hit connect once its opened and activesync should automatically disconnect and the laptop will establish a connection to the net. You don't have to use a dial-up connection anymore.

my problem was that my pc was seing the phone as a generic serial device not a modem. I went through the device manager, deleted the drivers it was using and installed the right one...now both phones will tether...maybe this will help someone else.

Imate pda2 as an external modem to connect notebook via GPS

I have Imate pda 2 .I Want to use it as an external modem and connect my notebook ( Hp Pavillion 4141) to the internet via GPRS through bluetooth
Could someone please give me a step by step ( I am a novice ) instruction as to how to do this?
hi
did u find a solution ! ??? i can help if u r still Not able to do it.
i could do with a hand
i have the O2 XDAIIi. I followed the O2 instructions from there web site. Im connecting my Tosiba Laptop to the XDA via USB. i can get the laptop to see the xda as a wireless modem, it talks to the xda and the xda shows the 'flashing' modem lights on the screen. the problem i have is the laptop just says page cant be displayed. If you have idiot instructions that wouls be great. the laptop is running XP home edition.
Thanks Pete
I'm very interested in this, because I have "free" gprs at the moment, and if i could run my laptop VIA gprs (even if it is slow) it would free my life up alot!
I didn't even manage to get as far as my laptop seeing my XDA IIi as a wireless modem. Could you send me the link on the O2 site on how to get that far?
the site is here
http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_spec.html
scroll down and you find this and more
http://www.my-xda.com/downloads/SettingUp_XdaII_s_i_modem.pdf
No when I came to set this up I found my XP didnt match the screen shots so did my best.
also it tells you to put the xda in modem opertation when in the cradle but you need to do it before for, so the PC sees it as a modem rather than xda
Pete
Hi
Someone knows where to get the HTC USB modem driver ?
I don't have thedisk
Thanks
I got it....should be tagged to this message!!
I also managed to get the thing working in the end...
I uninstalled the modem and the network link.
ran the modem prog on the xda, hit start plugged into the usb on the laptop
The laptop active sync disabled before plug in!!
Finds the HTC modem and installs
Then rather than setting up a connection I launched internet explorer, tool, internet options, connections
set one up through there...
YOU DO NEED to add the initalization string from the O2 instruction sheet for the serial connection though. otherwise it fails the connection
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","MOBILE.O2.CO"
also check out this place for more info on GPRS settup

thats exactly... the way it should be.. 100% working!
anybody out there with a macintosh who has done this??????
Just getting around to trying your instructions.
If this works I will be super happy. More happy than a Chocoholic in a chocolate wearhouse....or an alcoholic with the keys to a brewary.
this stupid board
just to clear this up for the USB mode you still need to enter the string. which can be found on the O2 instructions for the serial connetion of i posted there anyway.
Pete
I attempted to set it up, but got no-where really....
The instructions are very confusing.
tomw86 Ive added you to msm so you if you're on i can try and chat you through it.
Did you get the modem installed??
Here's how I did it.
Open active sync, File, connection settings.
Disable the USB option.
Close Active sync
fire up the XDA, Programs, WModem (wireless modem program)
Plug the XDA into the computer.
It should now find the modem and go through the give me a driver bit. Tell it to go manual and point it to where the drive is located, if it is the one I posted above then you will need to unzip it first (I had to zip it to upload onto here) or point to the location on the cd.
Let me know if you get that far. Ill try and sort out the rest. I got the modem connected and the laptop to talk to it, connecting to O2 but my IE wouldnt connect through it. I ended up removing the connection and staring again and it worked.

tytn as a laptop modem?

hows the conection done? hopefully usb?
what setting / software are needed on the lappy and tytn?
if at all it can be done?
You can do it through USB, Bluetooth or IrDA.
These instructions are for universal, but the same applies for TyTN:
BlueTooth
IrDA
USB

Wiki updated, I've put it on FAQs:

DUN
Is there a way to use DUN now that it's been disabled because of Internet Sharing?
New Tyten and Vista
Ok, I've been through the 3 ways to connec as a modem, I actually manged to connect ages ago with XP.
I now have a new Tyten, well new for the states but probably old in the rest of the world.
Anyway the New Tyten has a thing called Internet Sharing instead of wireless modem
None of the old settings are there anymore.
It also has a new way to connect via Blue Tooth Pan.
I've tried the Pan way but I had no luck, the connection seemed to work but I couldn't get on the internet.
I then tried USB, I couldn't get Vista to recognise the Tyten, even when I turned off the active synch, anybody got any ideas????
with Vista and WM6 internet sharing I think its easier than DUN. there is a whole how to in the help program on your hermesjust open the help app and search for internet sharing. just make sure your phone and laptop are connected via bluetooth and then open the internet sharing app and click connect make sure its set to bluetooth PAN. on my laptop I have a little bluetooth icon when its on so I right click that and then connect via persoanl network and then a little pop up pops up and I click on the connect bottun and it connects in about 15 seconds pretty easy! I know for USB you have to open the WMDC connection settings and uncheck allow usb connections.
Thanks
Cheers for that, I'll give it a go, although to be honest I've been trying it all afternoon..
I get the connection but no Internet connection..
Help Still needed
Ok, the plot thickens, I found drivers on the HTC Europe site to connect your Hermes to Vista.
I uninstalled all of the previous active synch hardware and also thre previous modem
When I plug the phone in it doesn't open the new downloads.
Any ideas, I'm running Windows 5.1, is there an official Windows 6 I can update to?
Some help with Macbook

For anyone having trouble getting their laptop to recognize the 8525 as a modem this may be the solution.
http://www.terranettech.net/DisplayPg.aspx?codeid=1128
my phone was working fine but when I tried to set my wife's up to tether it wouldn't show new hardware found when plugged in and when I tried to manually install the driver the process bix just kinda stalled out and wouldn't go forward with the driver even though I had browsed to the right one. I had to uninstall the driver which was viewing the phone as a serial device. if you're having this trouble then try following te directions in the link above. it worked for me...

Using my mda as a modem via usb /gprs

Im off on holiday to a place with no wifi access im taking my laptop and was wondering if i can use my gprs connection so i can check email and browse using my laptop ?
Thanks
Try a program called pdanet available from www.junefabrics.com. I had the same issue last week and used pdanet to connect my PC to the internet via my GPRS T-Mobile account. The program worked well for me.
Modem Link
Look in programs on your MDA and you will see a program called ModemLink, it allows you to use your MDA as an Edge/GPRS modem. It's how I connect to the internet at home on my desktop. Hook up to the USB cable run Modem Link hit activate and follow the directions. If you look on Your CD that came with the phone in the OEM folder you'll find directions and a driver to use.
Heres a good guide:

I was recently given a new laptop and had to reconfigure all my connections. Like you I have TM GPRS and while slow, it was still better than the alternatives. I tried & tried to get the usb modem to work but couldn't so in a last ditch effort I started playing around with the bluetooth modem and eureka, it works. I actually think it works better than usb, no cable, you dont have to mess with modemlink, it's stable, I'm using it right now.
My laptop is a dell xps which uses Toshiba's bluetooth stack. I initially tried configuring it with the auto configure wizard and it wouldn't recognize the wizard's modem. Instead use the manual process and in the Toshiba version there is a switch between modem and file transfer, it defaults to file transfer in the wizard, setting the switch to modem it instantly connected and logged into the gprs net (*99#, no password or logon info needed).
I also recently updated the wizard with the new tmobile rom which I believe eliminates modemlink because when I said you dont mess with it, it's because it's not there or at least I couldn't find it. Anyone else see this?
which one is more easier to set up?
thanks
usb
I figured this out yesterday using the usb cradle (to see if it would work).
The key is in the order that you do things.
Go to the wiki site (look at the top of the page - left) and follow the really simple instructions. THey work perfectly.
Good luck

8525 Bluetooth woes

Hello everyone, Ive searched but come across no help
Im using a Cingular 8525 with the 2.06 firmware and windows vista ultimate. I cant get my computer to connect to it for Dial up networking. My phone allows it to use it (its an option on the phone/laptop when pairing) but it does not connect! It keeps giving me errors. I have tried to enable "Bluetooth DUN instead of USB in the internet sharing app, but nothing changes.
Also, how can I get Windows Mobile Device Center to access my phone via bluetooth? Thank you!!!
can anyone offer assistance? thanks
Anyone at all? This is driving me nuts! I even used two different bluetooth drivers in my vista pc...but still nothing. it works via usb, but not bluetooth. Help???
I got Internet connection sharing working via BT PAN with the new ROM and Vista. Never tried to use it as a modem though.

can you give us your step by step instructions on how to do that?
Id even be ok with getting it to read with a USB cable... After upgrading to WM6, I lost sync support for Vista...
I always take my time before jumping into anything new, On my experience bugs take a while to be sorted out and fixed.
My advice, stick to XP and WM5 for a year at least, then it would be a lot safer to upgrade.

Vista Mobile Device Sync Problems

I have search everything here and on HTC and on Verizon and here is where I am stuck. Using DCD 3.2.0 (but had same problem with 3.1.6) and latest Radio Rom. It seems to connect just fine to a Windows XP activesync 4.5 computer but will not connect to the Mobile Device Center on Vista (32bit).
Looking into the device manager I do see the Mobile Devices/HTC USB Sync driver is active but I do not see the Portable Devices/XV 6800 driver at all.
I do have the "Enable Advanced Network Functioinality" unchecked. I have uninstalled all the drivers and Mobile Sync software and rebooted everything. I even have tried the USB splitter. It seems to half recognize the phone in Vista but the other half is the Mobile Sync part. I do get an error on the phone that says "To synchronize this device, you must install ActiveSync 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer." This is sooooo frustrating as it worked one time on Vista, I think either DCD 3.0.x or maybe earlier and now it only works on XP.
What am I missing here??????

Have you tried a different usb port on the PC, or a different PC running Vista 32 bit? Mine works fine in Vista & XP.

I have tried different USB ports and no Joy. It looks like it recognizes it as the HTC USB Sync driver shows up and it makes a noise that it found a USB device. I don't have another Vista machine but maybe a 64bit windows 2003 server would be the same. Probably not. It did work once a few DCD Roms ago but not since.
Random Disconnects
I am having a similar problem. Evern since moving to DCD 3.12, I have had a similar problem. I can manage to get connected sometimes but it will randomly disconnect.
For a while I switched to No2Chem and didnt experience the problem.

Can you post what devices show up when you are connected?
When I went from 3.1.4 to 3.2.0 I started having issues with Sync Center (Vista Ultimate 32-bit) as well. If I restart the PC it works fine for a while, but then suddenly you hear the USB device disconnect noise and thats all she wrote.
The device's charge LED is on, but it doesn't show up in vista anymore unless you restart the PC.
With 3.1.4 I never had this issue.
I wrote up an ActiveSync/mobile Device Manager Troubleshooting Guide in the Wiki, did you try all of those steps?

Go under settings/connections/USB to PC and uncheck the Enable advanced network functionality and see if that works for you on Vista.
also make sure you check your network connections, and make sure the Remote NDIS Connection (This is your Pocket PC, Smartphone) And have the IP Configuration set to automatic, as i forgot to put it back after using it as a modem for my laptop. This also prevents active sync from working.
Just a thought, as i had a similar problem, and my fix was reverting back IP settings to Automatic. Try this if you haven't

DV8, I have tried both on and off. It seems that off will act like the PPC with it on it acts like the remote NDIS network adapter like if you want to teather it.
ranmasaotome510, If I don't select the advanced network functioinality I never get the Remote NDIS Connection to change anything. All I get is the HTC USB Sync driver under the Mobile Devices and that is it. If I check the advanced network functionality I only get the Microsoft Widnows Mobile Remote Adapter driver and not the HTC USB sync driver. Either way WESCOMM doesn't find the device.
I used the view hidden devices and removed everything I could find but I never can find this driver: Portable Devices\PocketPC to uninstall it. I have also uninstalled WMDC a couple of times and have downloaded and installed the latest. This works fine on XP with out fail. I am also using office 2007 but this did work on this Vista machine with an earlier ROM.
No clue if this is related, but I found two copies of Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface in device manager. One was operational and the other was not. I removed the one with the yellow bang on it and plugged in my phone. Immediately Sync Center saw it and allowed me to create a connection with the phone.
Dumb luck? Maybe.

This is just a shot in the dark, but have you tried any of the wireless sync options - either bluetooth or IR? I know that they aren't quite as fast or reliable, but it may be worth a shot.

Hello all together,
some days ago I have bought a new S710 Vox phone and had no luck with synchronizing it with my Vista PC. Same problem as jambrose.
Then I read the posting about Teredo Tunneling-Adapter, deleted it from my system, rebooted the PC and surprise, the connection to my Vox works fine. Thank you!
Greetings to all

Yes, I found it in the Device Manager under Network.
But, this works only few days. My PC normaly runs all around the day und so it works until yesterday when I had to reboot my system because I had installed a software update. After this reboot the S710 has the same problem again. Even the Teredo Tunneling Adapter is still not there.

HELP!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot get this resolved to save my arse!
I have tried EVERYTHING...just spent 3 hours looking up stuff, and re-reading to try and find something.
What the problem is:
My Verizon XV6800 connects to my Vista laptop, but does not OPEN up WMDC. If I have "Advanced Function" unchecked, then my laptop finds my ppc when connected, but does not open up WMDC. On my phone, a little connection icon goes in the bottom tray. Other times, I get the "you do not have active sync 4.5 installed" error.
What I've tried:
Uninstalling/reinstalled
net localgroup add administrators etc.
I am at a loss.
I just want to sync my Mogul with my Vista Laptop, so that I can install apps and sync email! UGH!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a firewall running on your laptop? I had trouble connecting also since I have BitDefender running. I had to open up some ports to get it working. Also, prior to connecting the USB, I would exit the ActiveSync process. The connection will start a new instance of it automatically.
